You have probably heard of the 10,000 hour rule which was highlighted in Malcom Gladwell's bestseller Outliers. Gladwell's theory is that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to achieve mastery in any complex skill. Being an articulate and prepared lawyer and small business entrepreneur are extremely complex skills, and in order to become a master you have to put in the hours. On today's episode, Timothy Pavone highlights how he has systematically built his practice from his first client to where he is today. Tim's story is a shining example of the fact that in building a business there is no such thing as an overnight success, but rather that great businesses are built on attention to details over the long haul.   Highlights: ·       Listen to Tim talk about creating an office culture where every phone call is answered. ·       Discover why Tim believes you should try to win every argument, even a motion to continue, in front of your judge. ·       Hear Tim explain why the Rules of Evidence are undervalued by lawyers in district court practice. ·       Discover the roadblocks and keys to success that Tim has experienced in building his firm.

Can you be a Christian and be gay? Tim Rymel spent nearly 20 years emphatically answering no to that question. Born into the fundamentalist, Pentecostal Christian faith, he went into the ministry at 15-years-old, pleading with God to make him straight. His desperate journey led him into conversion therapy (among the Ex-Gay Movement), where he went from participant to leader at what was once the world's oldest and leading ex-gay organization. He, and the prominent ministry staff, including John Paulk, John Smid, and other Exodus leaders, suddenly found themselves thrust into the national media spotlight at a time when the battle between the LGBTQ community and the evangelical church was heating up. Michael and Tim discuss Tim's story as told in his book, "Going Gay." Hear Tim's thought-provoking account of one man's journey to accept and understand himself. In a culture where faith and sexuality seem often to be at war, Tim brings insight and light to the conversation. They also discuss Tim's other book, "Rethinking Everything When Faith and Reality Don't Make Sense," and how important and freeing it is to have a reasoned, fact-based faith or philosophy of life. There’s a scale of knowledge that’s in the subtext of every sales conversation. You, the salesperson, knows every feature of the new product, and your customer only knows that they need something. Finding out what the underlying need a person has can be as easy as saying, “tell me about your story." On my latest podcast of marketing and Sales, Over Cocktails, let's take a small detour into the the strategy of a business conversation, how to be vulnerable, and how to "act as if" you know where you're going and with the confidence to get there.Business Growth Strategist, Tim Croll teaches growth strategies for the digital age, and in this episode, he lays out three great tips for figuring out what a potential customer needs. Acknowledge their interest.Point toward the questions they’re not asking.Capture that interest by tying together the familiar with the unfamiliar. If you’re wondering what that looks like in a conversation, Tim shows how to apply that without coming across as a hard sell. You’re never going to have 100% buy-in on every customer you meet, and Tim wants you to know that that’s not the point. Find the people who need your product, ask the right questions, and increase your sales authentically. What’s Inside:● How to hear the questions that customers don’t want to ask.● Analogies have the power to cut through the noise and connect with the customer. ● Hear Tim’s detailed explanation for the 4 steps you can take to increase your confidence. Shownotes: http://www.unpackingdesign.com/podcast/22 How can designers come together and address the pay gaps within all design professions? What are some of the implicit biases that we have about white males, women, people of color, and others? In this episode, Tim and Mike talk about the uncomfortable topic of pay gaps within the design profession based on a YouTube video by Glamour Magazine entitled “Confronting the Pay Gap: Two Graphic Designers Compare Salaries”. Whether we’re aware of the struggles that minorities and women face in the design professions or not, statistics show that people who fall into these groups generally earn less than white males. However, having a diverse design team often leads to unique design solutions through the various experiences that people of different cultures and backgrounds offer. As an individual, how can female and minority designers begin to close the pay gap at their firms? By knowing their value to the firm and developing the confidence to negotiate for equal pay. This means that it’s important to know the average pay for specific skillsets and roles and learning how to leverage oneself at a negotiation meeting. What are some ways that we can work towards equal pay and rights at design firms? How can we ensure that the population of minorities and women continue to grow in our design fields? Hear Tim and Mike’s thoughts on the topic of women and minority pay gaps in the design profession and how they think we can start to address these issues in our fields. There is about a 50% or more attrition rate in the number of students that start post-secondary automotive programs and graduate. There are many reasons for this, however, it is a large number. Listen to the Vision interview on NASTF, the Road To Great Technicians (https://remarkableresults.biz/e312/) . Automotive careers may not necessarily include turning wrenches for your entire life. There are so many job opportunities in the industry. The skills of our technicians are wanted by other industries. There are many reasons we are losing our talent to include, training, support, career path, pay and benefits among many others. Why aren’t there more students landing at independent shops?  The dealer networks are in communication with the college and instructors. Workaround their schedules is a barrier. Students want to know what type of internship work they will do. They do not want to be in the lube bay for the entire program. Get them exposed to challenges inside the shop. We are in the world of major software technology as vehicles are running more computer code than ever. We are working in a mold of education that has a lot of debt to it and we need to break the mold. Automotive technology programs at all levels are expensive. The cost per student is high. But looking at the needs of the community, there is high demand for skilled technicians that can outweigh an economic downturn. Industry must get involved in the advisory boards at these schools. Independents must attend career fairs and speak to classes at all levels including middle school. Quality of teaching time is going down because of admin and committee work. Patrick (Pat) Reynolds, Dr. E. Anders (Andy) Kolb, and parent Joe McDonough. Dr. Pat Reynolds puts government spending on the number one disease killer of children in the US in perspective, comparing the tiny $200M spent on pediatric cancer research to the foreign aid budget of $22B (less than 1%). For example, $1.6B goes to Egypt alone. The COG budget is a mere $46M. The DOD budget is $700B. See his slides here. Dr. Lionel Chow mentions an enlightening fact – private donations to St Jude exceed $600M per year, on top of the givers’ paying taxes. This is 3 times the entire NCI budget for pediatric cancer research for all institutions in the US. Spending per Person Years Life Lost is compared for childhood cancers and adult cancers, see graph here. Dr. C Patrick Reynolds is Director, Cancer Center and Professor of Cell Biology & Biochemistry, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics, School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Lubbock TX. Dr. E Anders Kolb is the Director of Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation at Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, and Head of the Cancer Therapeutics Laboratory at Nemours Biomedical Research, Wilmington, DE.
