Trockenes Sommerwetter in Niedersachsen. Die Mühen des Gießens haben sich aber bisher gelohnt. Saubohne, Kartoffel, Pflücksalat, Radieschen und Co.: Die Gemüsebeete, die im März auf dem NDR Funkhausgelände in Hannover angelegt worden sind, stehen in sattem Grün. Die Saubohnen, die auch unter den Namen Puffbohnen, Viehbohnen, Ackerbohnen und Dicke Bohnen bekannt sind, haben wir gleich am ersten Tag in eines der Beete gelegt. Inzwischen sind sie hüfthoch gewachsen und haben sich prächtig entwickelt. Allerdings gefallen sie nicht nur uns besonders gut, sondern auch der Schwarzen Bohnenlaus. An den Stängeln sitzen die Läuse dicht gedrängt. Da wir die Bohnen aber schon vor Monaten in den Boden gebracht haben, ist der Entwicklungsstand jetzt bereits so weit, dass wir darauf verzichten wollen, sie aktiv zu bekämpfen. Wir setzen eher auf die natürlichen Feinde der Bohnenlaus und das ist vor allem der Marienkäfer. Mehrere hungrige Marienkäfer haben sich auch bereits auf den Saubohnen niedergelassen und verspeisen eine Laus nach der anderen. Wir freuen uns über den guten Appetit unserer kleinen Gartenhelfer! Da Bohnen sehr gesund sind, haben wir auch gleich noch mehrere Buschbohnen in das zweite Beet gelegt. Sie können aber auch problemlos in einen Kübel auf dem Balkon oder der Terrasse gepflanzt werden. Bei uns sind sie in kleinen Tuffs in den Boden gekommen. Mit einer Handschaufel wurden mehrere jeweils nur drei Zentimeter tiefe Mulden gegraben. Bohnen dürfen nämlich nicht zu tief gelegt werden. Ein altes Gärtnersprichwort dazu heißt, dass Bohnen das Läuten der Glocken hören wollen. Anschließend sind die Mulden gewässert worden. Nachdem das Wasser versickert war, haben wir jeweils sechs Bohnen im Kreis in jeder Mulde ausgelegt. Der ausgehobene Boden kam zurück auf die Mulden und alles wurde fest angedrückt, so bekommen die Bohnen den wichtigen Bodenschluss. Jetzt heißt es, regelmäßig alles zu gießen und abzuwarten, wie sich die Buschbohnen in den nächsten Wochen entwickeln. Dan is joined by scaffolder and ex-addict Harry Tuffs in this episode. Harry made the decision to become sober aged just 22 and talks to Dan about how and why he went into recovery at such a young age, from drinking in the morning at 18 years old to standing at the edge of life and death on a bridge 4 short years later. Dan and Harry talk about the drinking and drug culture young men have to face and the amplification of this found in many trade industries, particularly scaffolding. Harry then goes on to open up about his suicide attempt and is frank about how difficult it was to try and get the help he needed. The guys also discuss the denial there is surrounding alcohol and drug abuse and what it took for them to realise they had a problem as well as why the clarity being sober brings is often the most difficult part of the journey.   KEY TAKEAWAYS  Harry's young heart was broken by Fulham when at the age of 15, after playing for them for 15 years, he was told he was too short. This is when his drinking began. Harry enjoyed the effects of alcohol; it made him feel comfortable. It was after working with older guys that he started sniffing MKAT and along with taking this, his drinking accelerated. Scaffolding and other trades that attract working-class men and are particularly hard work often go hand in hand with drinking and drug taking. This culture can be hard to avoid as a young person first starting out. After earning a good wage, Harry moved on to cocaine use. At first, it was just to enjoy on a night out but before too long he was taking it before he went out and eventually taking it on his own at home. Addicts attract addicts and this amplifies addiction and normalises drug and alcohol addiction in peer groups. Harry found that no matter where he went, he would attract what he calls ‘wrong'uns'. Harry was miserable, but the people around him didn't realise, he would always put on an act when in company, often behaving larger than life. Harry reached out for help from his GP but was told there was no funding. It took Harry standing on a bridge contemplating jumping before he really got the help he needed. The tough part of sobriety is the clarity it brings. Addicts will frequently blame everyone apart from themselves for their behaviour, Harry recognises this in his own addiction journey, particularly towards his parents. At his lowest point, Harry was having episodes of psychosis as well as feelings of complete despair, he just wanted to die. Addicts will often ask themselves, if I don't drink or take drugs what will I do? Stephanie and Sean Tuff also started seeing that possibility a few years ago and they turned that into a new electric bike business. A few years back, Steph and Sean and their three young children were spending more time outside and looking for ways to get around town that weren't as expensive or polluting as a car. They found that biking provided this for them and so much more—the chance to really see the city around them instead of just letting it blur past through a windshield, the chance to enjoy fresh air and exercise and, frankly, to have more fun getting around than the typical car commute. But with young kids in tow and the difference in their abilities to bike quickly at the same speed—especially in hilly areas—they ended up turning to electric bikes to help make their travels even better and easier than on a regular bike. Eventually they partnered with friends to start a new e-bike company: Tuff Hill eBikes. Today's crossword was a big BESO from the constructor, David W. Tuffs, with an interesting theme revolving around comparisons. Both Jean & Mike were taken in by 23A,  One, in Berlin, EINS (they both thought it would be EINE), and while Jean immediately knew that was incorrect because of the cross, 15D, Root beer brand, DADS, it took Mike about 17 minutes longer to figure that out... Tuffs is one of the most exciting young managers in non-league football. He's set club records at Hartley Witney, turned fortunes around at Knaphill FC, and is now the current gaffer at Asford Town. Luke Tuffs is now 1st Team Manager at Ashford Town in the Isthmian League South Central Division, a position which was gained by hard work, persistence and pushing through adversity. Fizzle, Pixi, and Pop are Wiffle Tuffs: small, fluffy, magical creatures live beneath Lucy's bed. One day Fizzle, the oldest Wiffle Tuff sister, pushes her luck, winding up face to face with five-year-old Lucy. Caiti Hachmyer runs Red H Farm in Sebastapol, California, growing vegetables for the Sebastapol farmers market and a community supported agriculture program. She is also a researcher and food systems activist. Her research has taken her into the strategies and politics of land tenure for urban farming, and the workings of the world bank. She is the author of the 12th edition of Alternatives to the Peace Corps from Food First Books, as well as many articles on farming on the Farmers Guild website.
