BROWNSVILLE, Texas - State Sen. Morgan LaMantia believes homeowners and businesses based along the Texas Gulf Coast are having to pay too much for property insurance.Because of the threat of hurricanes and severe storms, regular insurance premiums are very high. So, the Sate of Texas provided an alternative way to have property along the coast insured. The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) is the insurer of last resort, offering windstorm and hail insurance to home and commercial property owners who cannot get this coverage in the regular market due to the risk of catastrophic hurricanes.LaMantia, D-South Padre Island, spoke about TWIA at a 88th Legislature Update Luncheon hosted recently by Brownsville Chamber of Commerce. She admitted that efforts to put more money into TWIA - so that property insurance rates along the coast could drop - had failed during the recent legislative session. LaMantia said: “We also worked on the cost of living. TWIA is a huge issue for our areas on the coast. And it's another cost that the rest of the state doesn't have. And we're trying to bring those costs down and, no, we weren't as successful as we wanted to be in really reestablishing how TWIA is funded.”LaMantia said the Legislature will revisit the issue next session. “And so it is something we will continue to work on next session. Because when your wind insurance costs are higher than your property taxes… it is a huge burden not just for our families and homeowners, but for local businesses and for other businesses that can't come into our community as well.”LaMantia said the State of Texas should do more to help homeowners and businesses based on the coast. “With so much tourism going on in our coastal communities, that benefits the rest of the state. We need the rest of the state's help funding TWIA and bringing those costs down for us as well,” she said. Here is an audio recording of everything Sen. LaMantia said at the Brownsville Chamber event. To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

¿Qué es el seguro contra tormentas y quién lo necesita?

The Texas Insurance Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2023 9:35

What is windstorm insurance and who needs it?

The Texas Insurance Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2023 8:10

If you live along the Texas coast, wind and hail insurance (also called windstorm insurance) often isn't part of your homeowners policy. You'll need a separate windstorm policy. TDI's Coastal Outreach and Assistance Services Team program can help with windstorm insurance questions and complaints. Where do I get windstorm insurance? Ask if your homeowners insurance company sells windstorm insurance. That's the easiest way. If they don't offer it, you can ask your agent to get you a policy through the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA). What is TWIA? TWIA is called an “insurer of last resort” because it's where you get insurance if a homeowners insurance company won't sell you wind and hail coverage. The Texas Legislature created TWIA in 1971 after Hurricane Celia. Most homeowners didn't have insurance to pay for their damages because insurance companies didn't sell wind and hail insurance on the coast. Do I need an inspection to get windstorm insurance? Yes. If you have a newly built home or you're doing home repairs, you'll need an inspection and a certificate of compliance to get a TWIA policy. The certificate (called a WPI-8) shows that your contractors followed the correct building codes. When can I get the windstorm inspection done?  It's best to get an inspection before the construction is finished. The inspector can let your contractor know if something they're doing doesn't meet the code, so they can stop and correct it. If the construction is finished, then a Texas licensed professional engineer can do the inspection and send it to TDI for a certificate of compliance. Because it's more difficult to inspect a completed structure for building code compliance, it may cost more. What advice do you have for consumers living along the coast?  If you have damage from previous storms, get it fixed before the next storm makes it worse. And if you have a policy through TWIA, make sure your certificate of compliance is up to date. You can use our website to find your certificate. You can also call TWIA at 800-231-5360.

REWRITTEN LIVES (SECOND EDITION) by J. Elliot Howard Rewritten Lives is a book of poetry that touches the cycle of life. As on lives life, letting go, learning lessons, rough times, standing again, rebuilding, loving, and completion are the facets that keep repeating. As the heart grows, the spirit gets stronger, and these poems are the notes of development. Now, in it's second printing experience it again, then read J. Elliot Howard's second book Take A Walk With Me for more. I was born in Findlay, Ohio. At the age of 16, my family moved to Sugar Land, TX. Shortly after moving, I began to write. No matter where I went, my writing followed. I wrote while attending University Of Houston, transferring and graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, graduate school at Bowling Green State University, marriage, fatherhood, and all points in between. Poetry is my snapshot in time because words mean more than pictures to me. They allow me to look, remember, and truly embrace each new experience. I love the city of Houston. Houston is where I met my wife, and where my son was born. Writing has enabled me to express myself thoroughly and creatively. Life is more than "happy love." At times, I have had to say good-bye. Sometimes, I have had to give chase. In other situations, I have had to sit still. Nevertheless, in all of the places I have lived, and moments I have experienced, all are worthwhile. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B092DX6MTC/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_tkin_p1_i1 http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/tWIA/jerellhowardec.mp3

Happy New Year! Welcome to the first episode of This Week in Aruba in 2019. We're gonna switch things up a lot this time and flush the format. So last year, TWIA was more events-based, but this year, we'll be focusing more on commentaries for what's happening around Aruba or some topics from the view of the people who love to visit Aruba via the Facebook and forum posts.   We have a couple of topics that we want to go through:   Who has the best cheeseburger on the island? Some popular opinions are: Alfie’s Local Store Twist of Flavours Chalo Burger Barney’s Dushi Bagel Bingo Matthew’s Champion’s White Modern Cuisine (during lunchtime) Smokey Joe’s   A subject that’s near and dear to our hearts about adopting pets from Aruba.   What do you do when a friend asks you about Aruba? How do you react to that question?   What’s the best time of year to visit Aruba? The weather is mostly the same all-year round but are their certain factors that will make you go a specific month? We’d love to hear your opinions on these topics as well! You can contact us via the One Happy Podcast hotline at (302) 635-0815 or send us a message on Facebook or via email to curt@onehappypodcast.com. So now we’re gonna jump into the events happening this 2nd timeshare week in Aruba from Friday, January 11th to Thursday, January 17th. Aruba Carnival Season When: January 5 to March 3, 2019  (all day)   Carnival means weeks of events that bring you colorfully decorated floats contagiously throbbing music luxuriously designed costumed groups of celebrants of all ages King & Queen elections electrifying Jump Ups Torch Light Parades that wind their way through the streets at night the Jouvert Morning Pajama Parade the Children's Parades and finally the Grand Parade! Officially starting in November, the majority of events, celebrations and parades are held in January and February until the Burning of King Momo, marking the end of Carnival Season. After the Burning of King Momo the entire island goes on hiatus, known as Carnival Monday (official day of rest).       Prins & Pancho When: January 12 (Sat) / 7:00 pm - 12:00 am Where: Carnival Harbour Arena (Oranjestad)   Prins & Pancho Election and Coronation (Children and Youth) The Prince and Pancho are two figures in Aruba's carnival tradition. The Prince's main task is to present his Queen to the people upon her election, and to accompany her wherever she appears. The Prime Minister opens the reign of the royal court by handing over the keys of the Island to the Prince. Pancho is the personal assistant of the Prince. His role is to tell jokes and accompany the Prince in his royal functions. The Prince and Pancho are chosen for their royal qualities. The duo is chosen for their comedy, personality, educational content and audience popularity.       In the past, we used to have a long list of events but this time we just want to focus on a main event per week. We will have more events listed in the future, but for now, we just want to keep this episode short and sweet. Onto the cruise ship schedule for this week:   Before we go, we’re giving a shoutout to Vallon Davis who I recorded a One Happy Podcast episode with. Thank you for being patient with me on your episode despite some technical problems.   We hope you enjoyed this episode of This Week in Aruba! Let us know your thoughts over the new format by contacting us via the One Happy Podcast hotline at (302) 635-0815 or send us a message on Facebook or via email to curt@onehappypodcast.com.
