Leader of the Accounting Professionals Program at FreshBooks. Show notes: https://www.markgraban.com/mistake73 My guest for Episode #73 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Twyla Verhelst. She lives and breathes accounting. As a CPA, tech entrepreneur, and now leader of the Accounting Professionals Program at FreshBooks, she's working to empower accounting professionals with the tools they need to thrive, as well as helping them discover their most valuable tool — their authentic self. In this episode, Twyla talks about her “favorite mistake” — a past episode of burnout and what she learned that allows her to prevent things from getting as bad when she detects signs of burnout starting to appear. Questions and topics include: What caused her burnout? Why was a 7-day silent retreat helpful to her? What does it mean to be your “authentic self”? As an accountant, an introvert, she had created a representation of herself… speaking up, doing things she decided “weren't her” Being authentic vs. getting out of your comfort zone?? Where is the balance? Being a mentor to women in accounting and entrepreneurship arenas… Is the name “Twyla” more popular after the show “Schitt's Creek” aired? Twyla Verhelst joins us to chat about how accounting leaders can adopt an entrepreneurial mindset to their work, and how to elevate themselves to become better business partners to the organizations they work for. In addition, Twyla provides some great tips to deal with change management and automation issues, and how to overcome them.
Despite their vast financial expertise, accountants are often regarded as seemingly untouchable figures that only talk in complicated jargon. For Twyla Verhelst, it is high time for accountants to become irreplaceable individuals within the business structure and not just mere expendable investments. Sitting down with Michelle Weinstein, she breaks down the most important factors every accountant must learn to forge a more effective and working relationship with business owners. This way, they can become not only silent guardians of cashflow but key players who can also help plan for the future. Twyla also underlines the importance of why accountants must revisit and reinvent their practices, veering away from the traditional and embracing a more progressive approach. Love the show? Every female CPA has a story and every entrepreneur has one as well. This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Twyla Verhelst, CPA. Twyla is the head of Freshbooks Account Channel and the leader of the Accounting Professionals program with Freshbooks. She was recognized as one of the Top 50 Women in Accounting. Twyla is known for leading the charge when it comes to advocacy, change and community. She is an experienced CPA and a tech entrepreneur with a passion for helping women build their confidence. Twyla Verhelst joined us for this episode of Where Accountants Go, the Accounting Careers Podcast. As you would expect, we discussed FreshBooks and how that accounting solution has expanded in recent years, but we also cover Twyla's earlier career history as well. Twyla has had an amazing journey, spanning typical accounting roles, to starting several businesses, to founding a charitable endeavor, to her role now with FreshBooks. It truly is an amazing journey. I confess that I typically thought of FreshBooks as a micro-business solution for solo-preneurs. However, I was mistaken. Make sure you listen all the way to the end on this episode. Twyla gives us a great overview of the platform changes they have made in recent years, and how that has enabled them to handle much larger enterprises in the small & mid-market space. If you enjoy a story of entrepreneurism, you will love this episode as well. Twyla co-founded a cloud accounting company, a software application company, a charitable organization, and even a mortgage company early in her career. She definitely has an entrepreneurial streak. Once you listen to this episode, if you would like more episodes on similar topics, make sure you check out: Mike Whitmire and Amanda Aguillard To listen in on this episode, please use the player below.
So much goes into founding and running a company. You have to consider everything from picking the right co-founder (if you go that route), to how to scale your team, all while trying to grow and maintain confidence in yourself and your business. While entrepreneurship can be a rewarding road, that doesn't necessarily mean it is an easy one. Twyla Verhelst is no stranger to any of this. As the co-founder of Helm and an original co-founder of an accounting firm called Twenty Eighty, and more recently the founder of a brand new non-profit focused on empowering women and girls who have the gift of autism called empowering Tana, she knows quite a bit about leading and being an entrepreneur. In this episode, she shares all her top tips on leadership and entrepreneurship, including the surprising way she cultivated her own self confidence. After recording this episode, Twyla has gone on to join FreshBooks as the Head of the Accountant Channel, where she is now lending her skills & experience scaling a successful firm to supporting accountants around the world build more collaborative accounting modelsTo learn more about Twyla you can follow her on Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn, and you can also check out Helm and the new FreshBooks Accounting Professional Program. The Finding Fearless Podcasts primary purpose is to highlight female entrepreneurs' voices.
