Mike McDerment is the Executive Chair & Co-Founder of FreshBooks, the #1 accounting software in the cloud, designed exclusively for freelancers and growing service based business owners. Built out of frustration after accidentally saving over an invoice, Mike spent 3.5 years growing FreshBooks from his parents’ basement. Since launching in 2003, over 24 million people have used FreshBooks to save time billing, and collect billions of dollars. A lover of the outdoors, Mike has been bitten so many times it’s rumoured he’s the first human to have developed immunity to mosquitoes. In January 2003, Mike was running a four-person design agency and using Microsoft Word to create invoices. One day, he accidentally saved over an old invoice, and something in him snapped – he knew there had to be a better way. Over the next two weeks, he coded up a solution and eventually turned that side-project into what is now FreshBooks.To keep the lights on, he moved into his parents’ basement for 3.5 years and completely revamped how he ran his design firm to the point where he only worked 19 days in one year — while generating over $200,000 to bootstrap the company that would become FreshBooks. Today, Mike has grown FreshBooks to nearly 500 people serving more than 24 million users in 160+ countries. Sometimes, a big mistake can trigger a big idea. In 2003, Mike McDerment was running a small web design agency when he accidentally saved over an old invoice. Frustrated and looking for a better way to bill clients, he decided to build the better way himself. The solution he came up with would become the foundation for FreshBooks, a cloud-based accounting software for freelancers and service-business owners, which is now the #2 small business accounting software in America, with around 500 employees and customers in more than 100 countries. In true startup fashion, Mike ran FreshBooks out of his parents’ basement for the first 3 ½ years. His mother was even an early investor, securing a line of credit for the co-founders since they couldn’t get a loan themselves. In 2014, after a decade of incremental growth, FreshBooks raised $30 million in venture capital funding. A second round in 2017 raised another $43 million, fueling the company’s growth and dominance in the booming self-employed and small business market. Bootstrapping Rapid Growth Mike created the software that would become FreshBooks after growing frustrated when he accidentally saved over a past billing invoice. One of the important decisions Mike made early in the life of FreshBooks was to walk away from venture capital funding. At the time, Mike was concerned that the need to offer a return on investment could stunt progress in scaling a business — and so for years, FreshBooks was self-funded. Ultimately, this put the company into a great position now that it is in the pre-IPO stage because it allowed FreshBooks to remain more nimble without being beholden to outside investors during its critical growth period. One good way to communicate this value is by providing the client with a quarterly or annual report of what your company has done for them and laying out some goals for the future. Continue the relationship with content marketing – Content marketing is one of the clearest ways to provide value to clients, new or existing. Setting yourself up as a thought leader in your area of expertise and willingly sharing that knowledge will surprise and delight your clients and keep them engaged. You can do this through weekly email newsletters, hosting a podcast, creating a deliverable that your clients can refer to, or offering free services to help them conduct more effective business themselves. Since launching in 2003, over 10 million people have used FreshBooks to save time billing, and collect billions of dollars. In January 2003, Mike was running a four-person design agency and using Microsoft Word to create invoices. One day, he accidentally saved over an old invoice, and something in him snapped – he knew there had to be a better way. Over the next two weeks, he coded up a solution and eventually turned that sideproject into what is now FreshBooks. To keep the lights on, he moved into his parents' basement for 3.5 years and completely revamped how he ran his design firm to the point where he only worked 19 days in one year — while generating over $200,000 to bootstrap the company that would become FreshBooks. Today, Mike has grown FreshBooks to nearly 300 people serving more than 10 million users in 160+ countries.
