Tread Perilously's annual Doctor Who month continues with "Fugitive of the Judoon." Gloucester resident Ruth Clayton is well-liked by locals, but her attempts to sell visitors on a guided tour is often met with shrugs. She's okay with it, though, as she's happily married and celebrating her 44th birthday. But when a troop of Judoon put Gloucester in a suspension field, The Doctor arrives to learn why they are so interested in Ruth and her husband. Is it possible she is more than just another tour guide? Meanwhile, Yaz, Graham and Ryan meet Captain Jack Harkness. It goes as well as you think. Justin finally meets the Fugitive Doctor! He also finds more reasons to like Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor. Tosin Cole finally makes an impression as Ryan, while Mandip Gill remains solid as Yaz and Bradley Walsh excels as Graham. The local baker, though, proves to have too much character and John Barrowman's return as Captain Jack leads down a valley of disclaimers. Any photo of someone on a phone proves to be immediately suspicious. Erik finds legitimate reason to praise co-writer Chris Chibnall. Justin recognizes a guest actor from The Umbrella Academy. The pair continue to make suggestions for the Sixteenth Doctor and Justin, at long last, understands what it means to be a Doctor Who fan.
"Listen. If 9/11 didn't happen, we wouldn't have My Chemical Romance. We wouldn't have Twilight. We wouldn't have this entire Tumblr core era of girly pop." We took the podcast to C2E2! In front of a live Chicago audience, we are unpacking the pipeline between My Chemical Romance, early 2000s pop-punk, and the comic book industry. Lizzie officially steps into her role as our resident Gerard Way historian to explain how The Umbrella Academy and The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys took the intricate, non-linear storytelling of MCR and translated it into graphic novels that spoke directly to scene kids. Plus, we talk about the bizarrely perfect era of 2000s superhero movie soundtracks, and yes, we actually connect 9/11 to the creation of My Chemical Romance and Twilight (we told you it was a live show). What we cover on the panel: • Why The Umbrella Academy is essentially a family trauma story dressed as a superhero comic • Gerard Way's transition from the Black Parade era into comic book writing • The emo lore behind Patrick Stump and Max Bemis entering the comic space • Why movies like Daredevil and Spider-Man had memorable scene soundtracks • The infamous 9/11 to MCR to Twilight domino effect" "Is Umbrella Academy an emo comic book? I would argue yes. It's acknowledging family trauma and abandonment in a creative way that makes people draw that inwards, just like listening to My Chemical Romance or Paramore." "The Danger Days era was a vibrant, loud shift... having these big bright colors and being whimsical again. It's joy as an act of resistance." "There were a lot of artists and a lot of songs that I found specifically from comic book movies of the early 2000s because there was clearly some crossover of, like, well, if you like Spider-Man, you're gonna love Dashboard Confessional." My interview with Patrick Hogan is‘Back to School.' The time with Patrick was a special learning experience. Hisfilm, ‘Blindsided,' is horror, sensory storytelling, fear, empathy, and craftat the highest level. Patrick is quintessential Hollywood. Brilliant, eloquent, dedicated, and magical. An MFA from USC film school. When not making films, hewas nominated ten times for an Emmy as a sound editor. He made a funny commentabout the ten times nominated. And he's worked on iconic shows like ‘Six FeetUnder' and ‘Cobra Kai.' More schoolingfor me. Blindsided. A blind schoolteacher struggles through a nightmarish nightwhen an alien spaceship crashes. The production features a low-vision cast. Aspecial camera that the blind protagonist wears. Then ‘Lord of the Rings' wasmore schooling. More sound bites. I mentioned ‘From Here to Eternity.' Thesound of a screen door closing, an echo in an empty rec-room in 1941 PearlHarbor, still resonates with me. And I had Patrick, a ‘teacher', to expressthis too. I've been waiting five decadesto sound off. And AI came up. As did the 1956 film ‘Forbidden Planet.' Wecould've gone on for a few more hours. But the school bell rang.” Calvin

We all recognise the media landscape has changed dramatically over the past 40 years, and for creatives like today's guest, working as a director is a masterclass in embracing change. Joining us is Australian director Kate Woods to share her insights about the evolution of the television sector behind the camera and the project that brought her back to Australia. She's worked on some of the biggest titles on the small screen in Australia and the US, including Aussie favourites like GP, All Saints, Farscape and City Homicide, and US titles including Without a Trace, the Law and Order franchises, The Umbrella Academy, Agents of Shield, and The Good Lord Bird. You'll also likely recognise her debut feature film – the Aussie teen hit of 2000, Looking for Alibrandi – which this year celebrates 25 years since release. Kate reflects on her experiences working in the industry across film and TV in Australia and abroad, her approach to selecting projects, the influence of music in her work, and why she ignored the screen adage to never work with children or animals in her latest project, Kangaroo.
International camera operator Brett Hurd SOC joins us after a run on shows like The Handmaid's Tale, Mrs America, The Umbrella Academy, The Terminal List and American Primeval. We talk about the path that took him from early sports broadcasting and documentary work to operating on major dramas around the world. Brett shares how still photography shapes his eye, why mobility and body awareness matter for handheld, and how growing up skating and playing sport feeds directly into his work today. He opens up about the pressure of big opportunities, the value of being uncomfortable, and the moments that pushed his craft to the next level. We also explore leadership on set, communication with cast, and building an environment where everyone feels safe to do their best work. A grounded chat with a thoughtful operator who brings both skill and heart to every project.

In this solo episode, host Drew English unpacks the concept of leverage and why 2025 is the best time for creatives to build independent success. He argues that cheap tech, free global distribution, and direct-to-audience marketing have removed the traditional gatekeepers. Creators who shift from selling services to building assets can own their future in the “Creator 2.0” era.Key TakeawaysTech is cheap: Your phone can produce market-ready visuals—hardware is no longer the hurdle.Distribution is free: Platforms like YouTube give instant access to a worldwide audience; the game now is earning the click.Marketing is direct: Email lists and social media let you talk to fans anytime—no middlemen required.Assets > services: Follow the athlete model—use your primary skill to build IP, products, or partnerships that earn while you sleep.Real-world examples:The Umbrella Academy evolved from graphic novel to Netflix hit.A24 green-lit “The Backrooms,” a YouTube horror series created by a 19-year-old.Producer Alex LeMay urges filmmakers to “think platform first, not format.”Action items for listeners:Audit your expertise - what unique knowledge or story can become IP?Choose one primary platform (e.g., YouTube) and design content natively for it.Start an email list to own your relationship with fans.Package and test ideas in small formats (web series, mini-docs, digital products).Lean into human connection - your perspective and trust can't be replicated by AI.
