On the precipice of breaking into Pokemon Legends Arceus, the party has other games to debate, bemoaning the lack of RPG depth in the story mode of Mario Golf Super Rush, demoing a new JRPG from Shin Megami Tensei veterans, and playing the most popular MMORPG of the current era (it's FFXIV). Then, they report on quests that pose numerous difficulties, and Evan must concede a truth about late 80s RPGs that he finds deeply unsettling. Things got a bit heavy last week, so let's take things down a notch by exploring the other end of the scale. Light games are just as important for a board game collection, after all. We discuss what light games offer that heavier games don't, and mention some of our recent favourites. Before we lighten the mood, we talk about Reef, Clans of Caledonia, and Tutankhamun. 02:34 - Reef 09:18 - Clans of Caledonia 15:00 - Tutankhamun 22:01 - Light Games 23:48 - Werewolf 25:37 - Vast: The Crystal Caverns 26:28 - Ingenious 27:21 - The Quest for El Dorado 30:40 - Twice As Clever 33:24 - Dice Fishing: Roll and Catch 36:11 - Cacti 37:35 - The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine 38:04 - Deep Sea Adventure 38:49 - Flamme Rouge "Complexity bias in BGG" by Dinesh Vatvani: https://dvatvani.github.io/BGG-Analysis-Part-2.html Join the discussion at: https://boardgamebarrage.com/discord

We went a little bit long today, but that’s because we’re essentially talking about 9 different games in our descriptions. And that’s because today we are taking a look at asymmetrical games by comparing Vast: The Crystal Caverns and Root. We then take a step back and talk about how we learn games. We also get a little bit excited about the upcoming Origins: Game Fair, so be on the lookout for us if you are heading to Columbus next month! This week the Board Game Bros discuss the dungeon-delving asymmetrical board game Vast: the Crystal Caverns. Listen as Jeff and Matt go into great detail how the unique player rolls play and interact with each other and why you should brush up on your rule book interpretation skills before sitting down with this game.
Ryan, Adam and Chad argue for 30 minutes about the meaning of a big word. Really. We take on the topic of "variable player powers" and how that broad categorization applies to games from Cosmic Encounter to Vast: The Crystal Caverns, and everything in-between. Is there a hard line between variable player powers and asymmetric games? We certainly don't have the answer. As you may have guessed, our feature game is also asymmetric - Root. This recent hit has been the talk of the town, and your three hosts had a chance to play it together. Hear about that game (and Chad's subsequent games since) went, our views on asymmetric games, and what our opinions are on this cutesy woodland creature wargame. We close the show with some games we've been playing recently, including Detective: A Modern Crime Story, Gloomhaven, and Chad's 5 hour Through the Ages match. Don't forget to find Mr. Dice Guy's most recent discount code buried within!
On this first episode of the Tabletop Sessions Podcast, we discuss Vast: The Crystal Caverns, Archmage, Wallenstein, Pax Pamir, Renegade, Time of Crisis, The Shipwreck Arcana, and the Kickstarters for Mezo, Assassins Creed: Brotherhood of Venice, and Hagglethorn Hollow. Asymmetry is a powerful tool for game design, if done right. There's a lot of replayability right out of the box, and finding a playstyle that works for you can be very satisfying. But this dark alchemy has a darker byproduct: imbalance. When so much is different between each player, how do you ensure that things stay fair? Before we nerf plz, we discuss Container, and more Root. 01:40 - Container 12:28 - Root 18:08 - Scoreboard Update 20:04 - Balancing Asymmetry 26:49 - Vast: The Crystal Caverns 27:26 - Cosmic Encounter 30:05 - Scythe 30:55 - Terra Mystica 33:20 - Cry Havoc 40:08 - Cthulhu Wars 44:14 - The Voyages of Marco Polo 45:27 - Rising Sun 47:55 - Sidereal Confluence 49:57 - Diplomacy
00:05:02 - Plataformas para jugar online 00:52:50 - Rewind: Argent the consortium y Roll for the galaxy 01:01:45 - Harvest 01:06:35 - Star Wars: Legion 01:14:20 - Vast: The Crystal caverns 01:38:20 - Follow y Unfollow MUSIC: Space Invaders – Pornophonique /n Look and feel years younger – Brad Sucks
There are lots of great games that are available for free (or at least just the cost of printer paper and ink). Some are homebrew, some are games that are available to print as a demo, and some are just weird. And I cannot stress just how much Jondi hates Werewolf.

Hey, all. This one's me talking about how I've organized my life recently to be more productive. I also discuss some very early first impressions of the odd game Vast: The Crystal Caverns. Finally, I weigh in on the subject of using "they" as a non-gendered singular pronoun in game rulebooks and why that's obviously a good thing. Obviously. The Rook & Pawn has over 800 games in its library - someone has to make 'em all. One of those someones is Mattox Shuler, Athenian, game designer. Along with Kyle Key, Mattox helped found Keymaster Games, a thriving game company located right here in Athens. Their first game, Control, was a smash hit last year on Kickstarter, and they easily funded their second title, Campy Creatures, just a few weeks ago. Mattox talks games, plays Campy with us and reveals ALL* of his secrets. *note: no secrets actually revealed, this was merely a ploy to add intrigue and excitement to these show notes. Who shit in my cat?: Habéis leído bien. ;)

Happy Thanksgiving! Jason takes the reins this week with Episode 10 of Table for One. He discusses two games he's played recently - The Pursuit of Happiness and Vast: The Crystal Caverns - two very popular multiplayer games released in 2016 with solo variants. He also talks about a topic very near and dear to a lot of solo gamers - how to handle being an introvert during the holidays when visiting family. If you haven't yet, we'd love a quick review on iTunes or the Google Play store, and don't forget to check out all of the Table for One Episodes on BoardGamersAnonymous.com.
We first fire off a few mini reviews. The first game discussed is Vast: The Crystal Caverns, then we discuss Nathan's sadness over missing out on Captain Sonar. Then we discuss the dirty little secrets of playing with house rules. Is your favorite space on the Monopoly board Free Parking? Do you enforce certain variable rules when you play a game, in the rulebook or not? Two Captains in Firefly? Is this madness? Listen to find out.
Like a jaguar (car) or a jaguar (cat), our 47th ever podcast is a bona fide classic. Paul and Quinns discuss board games ranging from Vast: The Crystal Caverns, to Twilight Struggle, to Aquarium. They answer reader mails! They review a hilarious folk game. They discuss veggies and jam. It's everything you want in one mid-sized audio file.
Episode 125: The Impact Of Large Scale Media Length: 1:51:00 Show Links: RSS | iTunes | Stitcher | Download Episode Welcome back to Vox Republica, the Cardboard Republic Podcast! We post new episodes every other Thursday, with each episode being about 45 minutes long. Vox Republica is proudly supported by our Patreon. Consider contributing today! DESCRIPTION: This week we turn the lens inward on gaming media itself. After discussing the philosophy behind how often someone should play a game before judging (or reviewing) it, Erin and Ryan then invite on veteran reviewers Michael Fox (Little Metal Dog Show) and Jonathan Wolf (islaythedragon) to chat about the 800 pound Kotaku in the room. As gaming continues to grow, it's attracting attention from non-traditional hobby gaming sites to cover games. With scopes of coverage dwarfing even that of The Dice Tower, we examine the positives - and negatives - that such newcomers have on gaming media and the hobby on the whole. GUESTS: Michael Fox & Jonathan Wolf RECENTLY PLAYED GAMES - (01:36): Vast: The Crystal Caverns by Leder Games Agility by Two Lanterns Games Potion Explosion by Cool Mini Or Not Mystic Vale by Alderac Entertainment Group Mansions of Madness: Second Edition by Fantasy Flight Games QUICK TOPICS - (38:23): How many times do you have to play a game before being able to render a verdict on it? Erin and Ryan discuss what they feel their ideal number is, both for gamers and for reviewers. Ryan also floats his idea for a new vlog. FEATURED TOPIC - (54:39): As the gaming hobby continues to expand, it seems that some entities with sizable readership have decided to get in on the fun. To figure out what that means for the hobby and hobby media, we decided to round up a couple and chat about it. Together with Michael Fox of Little Metal Dog Show and editor Jonathan Wolf of islaythedragon, we dive into how it affects those of us on the content creation side. Topics include: Why are larger entities taking more of an interest in gaming lately? Was this a natural progression due to growth of the hobby? What the positive implications that their involvement can have on the hobby itself How their presence impacts 'hobbyist media' and how entities should adjust/cope with that impact Are there any serious detriments to this increased interest from large outlets? PLUGS - (1:51:00): We reviewed Quadropolis! We're also raffling off a copy of August Indie Spotlight game Vast! We're also also raffling off a copy of Avalanche at Yeti Mountain to a lucky Patreon backer. Consider donating today! As always, Cardboard Republic YouTube videos, Instagram pictures, and the BGG Guild are still ongoing. Subscribe to either - or both if you really love us. You do really love us, right?
