We've seen a three-month period of underperformance for Chinese stocks and outperformance for Japanese stocks. Our positioning indicators based on futures and cross-border flows hint at flows from China to Japan. The recent China stimulus points to better days ahead for Chinese equities, and the worry was money flowing back from Japan would blunt the Japanese equity rally. Overall, we downplay the idea that a recovery for Chinese stocks must come at Japan's expense.   Speakers: Thomas Salopek, Head of Global Cross Asset Strategy Wendy Liu, Chief Asia and China Equity Strategist Rie Nishihara, Chief Japan Equity Strategist   This podcast was recorded on Jan. 30, 2024. It was written and presented by Saul Leslie, and features commentary by fictional Wimbledon champion and writer Elsa Canetti (voiced by Wendy Liu), and a guest 'courtside' appearance from literary academic Beci Carver. Authors Richard Seymour and Wendy Liu discuss how our social-media generated addiction to writing is ruining our lives, and what we can do to escape its vicious cycles. ---------------------------------------------------- What is the Twittering Machine? An addiction-machine organized around the first ever mass, open-air, collective writing experiment. A microcelebrity-farm, where the only incentive to be there is to cultivate, and destroy, a personal idol. A furnace of meaning, wherein the mass of information stands in inverse proportion to truth. A volatile combination of the stock market, 24 hour news and Neighborhood Watch. This is the social industry. It thrives as it occupies every corner of our lives with compulsive, wage-free writing. It programs our social lives by algorithm and code, subordinating us to mercurial hierarchies of status and visibility, and to the grammar of capitalism. With each new tweetstorm, it brings us ever closer to the edge. Faced with such a novel, unprecedented power, we are entitled to ask the minimum utopian question: what else could we be doing, if not this? ---------------------------------------------------- Speakers: Richard Seymour is a writer and editor based in London. He is the author of The Twittering Machine and is a founding editor of Salvage. Wendy Liu is a tech commentator, software engineer and former startup founder who left the tech industry to pursue a masters degree in inequality from the London School of Economics. She is the author of Abolish Silicon Valley (Repeater Books) and has written for Logic Magazine, Tribune, and New Internationalist. Her articles on tech worker union organizing have been featured in The Atlantic and CNBC.- --------------------------------------------------- Order a copy of Richard Seymour's "The Twittering Machine": https://www.versobooks.com/books/3229-the-twittering-machine Order a copy of Wendy Liu's "Abolish Silicon Valley": https://bookshop.org/a/1039/9781912248704 ---------------------------------------------------------- This event is co-sponsored by Haymarket Books and Verso Books. Disruption, innovation, entrepreneurial spirit – Silicon Valley is viewed by many as the cradle of technological development and progress in our world today. But, behind the luster of unlimited growth and unbounded ambition lies Capitalism's standard blend of exploitation and concentration of individual wealth at the expense of public good. ———————————————————— At a time when technology is seeping even deeper into our lives, how can we reclaim it for the many and not the few? Join authors, activists and radicals Rob Larson and Wendy Liu for a discussion on Big Tech's monopolistic power today, and how we can respond to it with a radical vision of digital socialism. Rob Larson is a professor of economics at Tacoma Community College and author of Bit Tyrants: The Political Economy of Silicon Valley, and Capitalism vs. Freedom. He writes for Jacobin, In These Times, Current Affairs and Dollars & Sense. To many, working at Google is a "dream job," but when they get there, few find that their idealistic perspectives are reflected. As the tech industry as a whole keeps inflating in size, both Goliath corporations and the millions being funneled into startups have been exposed for their harmless philosophies and questionable practices. Wendy Liu is a former startup CTO and published author of Abolish Silicon Valley. After graduating from McGill in 2013, Wendy abandoned a full-time role at Google to lead technology at her startup Macromeasures, but came out of the experience with key insights on how tech exacerbates inequality and illusion. Since then, Wendy got a masters in Economics and recently took on a role at Open Door Legal, a nonprofit providing legal support for the underprivileged. In this episode, we'll be diving into Wendy's takeaways from the tech industry, and why it drew her away.

A bonus deep-dive episode into the culture and politics of Big Tech and Silicon Valley! Today Andy chats with the writer Wendy Liu (no relation) about her recent book, Abolish Silicon Valley.A programmer, former Google intern, and startup founder, Wendy has written on a host of political-economic questions swirling around Silicon Valley today: how to organize contract workers in Silicon Valley; Andrew Yang and UBI; and why we should socialize Amazon.Above all, she is interested in spoiling the myths that Silicon Valley tells itself and sells to the public. This episode focuses on her individual reckoning with the reality of Big Tech and capitalism: her distaste for corporate identity politics, how her social position (second-generation Chinese-Canadian woman) shaped her growth, the contrast between STEM and political education, and the mythology of meritocracy.0:00 – Wendy’s own trajectory from youthful adherent of the cult of Silicon Valley (Elon Musk, Elizabeth Holmes) to disillusionment and critique.19:30 – Wendy’s thoughts on entering the tech world as a woman and an Asian-(North) American—from minimizing her feelings of difference in order to fit in to gaining a structural understanding of gender and race. Some choice words for White Fragility-style corporate diversity measures. And a brief discussion of the mind-blowing history of Chinese labor migration to the West Coast. 41:30 – Our thoughts on a previous listener question: why so many Asian-Americans opt for STEM education and career paths. Parental pressure? Culture? 48:00 – We discuss friend-of-the-show Immanuel Wallerstein’s classic, Historical Capitalism (Verso, 1983), and his criticism of the concept of meritocracy. Why is Silicon Valley’s cult of meritocracy a “sham”? How should the rest of us try to process and make sense of this critique? Get on the email list at goodbye.substack.com

Our quick review of Abolish Silicon Valley: From inspiring early experiences in open-source software development, to crushing disappointment in the search for startup funding, Wendy Liu writes a refreshingly candid account of how she fell in, and then out, of love with the tech industry. Liu shows how the inhabitants of Silicon Valley - from the funders, to the founders - have abdicated their responsibility to society; that beneath the veneer of global connectivity and community-building, they have driven immense socio-economic inequality. But all is not lost as Liu argues: inequities borne from tech can be resolved if we're willing to hold up a mirror and address their causes, regardless of how close to home these may be. We cover Wendy’s journey from Silicon Valley insider to critic (i.e. from success story to hater), the many charms of Venture Capitalists, and the cycle of exploitation that ensures we have a constant stream of internet-connected juicers and laundry startups. ‘Abolish Silicon Valley’ is out April 14, 2020 from Repeater Books and is available for pre-order now (abolishsiliconvalley.com).

It’s a strange situation when we actually like something on this show - and therefore decided to have a relatively serious conversation about it. On this week’s Trashfuture, Riley (@raaleh), Hussein (@HKesvani), and Nate (@inthesedeserts) spoke with Wendy Liu (@dellsystem) and Trevor Beaulieu (@RickyRawls ) of the Champagne Sharks podcast about Boots Riley’s film ‘Sorry to Bother You.’ As you can possibly imagine, we really enjoyed this film and had a lot to say about it, specifically about how it’s an unabashedly socialist movie that’s also funny.  Spoiler alert: yes, this podcast contains spoilers. If you want to hear more from Trevor, you can access episodes of Champagne Sharks here: https://soundcloud.com/champagnesharks Please bear in mind that we still have a Patreon. From Amazon’s increasing domination over the economy to broader collaboration with government programs like weaponized drone operations and burgeoning surveillance apparatuses, Big Tech seems only to be getting bigger. And, arguably, more dangerous. In the contest of capitalist growth imperatives, the main counterbalance to this power seems to be the tech workers themselves, workers who refuse to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or tolerate sexual harassment. In this episode, we’re talking with Wendy Liu and Ben Tarnoff about the ongoing efforts to mobilize and organize tech sector workers towards better working conditions as well as the power to make decisions over their work to avoid social harm and orient the tech sector toward a moral accountability.

*Due to logistical problems this recording starts as Leo Watkins is speaking. Regrettably this means that Laura Basu, Angela Phillips & Wendy Liu's contributions are not on the tape apart from in the Q&A. We're looking at ways to get their voices back on the soundcloud file, and apologise sincerely that their omission means that the panel is presented as effectively all male.* Our media is in crisis and transition. There is a crisis of funding, working conditions quality, trust and accountability in British journalism. Google and Facebook have rapidly acquired extraordinary power over what we see and read online. The BBC's culture and output have been transformed by four decades of neoliberal hegemony.
