Almost immediately, he found himself as sideman for notable locals such as Kermit Ruffins, Michael Ward and The Reward, and Sun Ra trumpeter, Michael Ray.  In 1992 he co-founded the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars(NOKAS), a pioneering klezmer ensemble that infused that music with the vibrancy and energy of the funk, jazz and brass music of New Orleans. To date he has had opportunity to play with most of New Orleans' greatest musicians from across all genres.  NOKAS was playing some of his compositions, but by 1993 he found himself seeking outlets for his compositions in other styles and forms.  After playing with a plethora of combos and experimenting with many great local musicians he formed Naked On The Floor and eventually The Naked Orchestra. Naked on the Floor (quintet) and the Naked Orchestra (18-24 piece creative orchestra) play Freilich's original compositions exclusively and still play regularly in New Orleans. He has appeared at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival 24 times as well as headlining the Berlin Jazz Festival with NOKAS. He has appeared at numerous other festivals inside and outside the country including Bonnaroo, the Ann Arbor Jazz Festival, The American Folklife festival at the Washington Monument, collaborations with poet, Andrei Codrescu at the Holocaust museum in NYC and many others. Other notable work includes appearances with Sam Rivers, Burton Greene, Marshall Allen, The Wild Magnolias and backing songwriters such as Robbie Robertson. He has done arrangements for a wide range of recordings from, Peter Stampfel to Hal Willner's presentation of U@ doing music of T-Rex. He is featured on over 21 recordings ranging from Klezmer to Afro-Cuban and avant-garde orchestra music. Recently he put out two CD's of a large orchestra playing his original compositions, a small group, and played on Marianne Faithfull's latest release.  Many of these recordings are either Big Easy or Offbeat entertainment award winners across a number of categories.  He also has music featured in films and TV shows (Andy Richter conquers the Universe, The Dukes of Hazzard(Warner Home Video) as well as commercials for companies such as Southwest Airlines and Mercedes.    n 2016 he produced and arranged an album, NOLA? for legendary Basque artist, Fermin Muguruza. Rearrangements of Muguruza's classic work utilizing the great players and sounds of New Orleans. That led to a very successful European run for the Basque New Orleans Orchestra. Other arranging credits include Hal Wilner and U2 tribute to T. Rex and Grammy Award winner, Peter Stampfel's 100 songs of the 20th century project.      His work includes 4 completed and performed operatic works: a comic-satirical opera, Bang the Law, about a couple of New Orleans lawyers and their movements through New Orleans class detritus after Hurricane Katrina, a two movement orchestral fantasy about Elias Cannetti at carnival, formation of a new quintet to play new original compositions, an octet reduction of Peter and the Wolf for a New Orleans Contemporary Art Center/Guggenheim foundation presentation; a second opera, ee me & cummings thee which premiered in New Orleans in Nov. 2011.   2019 saw the completion of two operas. One a hyper-collaborative project with writer, Bernard Pearce, The Coronation, on the selecting of queen bees. In June 2019 he wrote an operetta on the Dirty Letters of James Joyce to Nora Barnacle, titled Darling, Please do not be offended at what I wrote.  He is the subject of the one hour radio documentary Jonathan Freilich's Freedom Double-O Naked Klezmer Jazz Latin Boogaloo: The Radio Documentary by award winning documentarian, David Kunian and was the 2008 Louisiana Governors' Music Fellowship Award recipient.  This year he figured as a Rising Star guitarist in Downbeat's Critics Poll.  Freilich was born Oct.13, 1968 in Philadelphia, Pa.  He spent most of his early years, up until a late teenager in London, England before moving to Los Angeles in 1985.  Thereafter, he moved to Santa Cruz, Ca in 1987 before the 1989 move to New Orleans.  Currently, he is residing in Los Angeles after completing further studies in composition at California Institute of the Arts. Aside from music, Freilich is also a certified Iyengar yoga instructor and co-owner of a studio in New Orleans for many years.

On the vibrant morning of Mardi Gras, your eyes are treated to a visual spectacle of intricate beadwork as the Indians dance down the streets of New Orleans. However, it's the rhythmic heartbeat, known as "the rumble," that announces their arrival. Comprising seven accomplished musicians, The Rumble transcends the label of a mere band, offering an immersive experience into a distinctive facet of New Orleans culture.Led by Second Chief Joseph Boudreaux Jr. of the Golden Eagles, the ensemble includes trumpeter Aurélien Barnes, trombonist José Maize Jr., bassist TJ Norris, guitarist Ari Teitel, keyboardist Andriu Yanovski, and drummer Trenton O'Neal. Their fusion of iconic New Orleans funk, reminiscent of The Meters and The Neville Brothers but modernized for the next generation, incorporates electrifying brass and showcases the visual splendor of the Black Masking carnival tradition. The Rumble's inaugural album, "Live at the Maple Leaf," earned them a well-deserved GRAMMY for Best Regional Roots Album in 2024. Their live performances are symphonies of rich color and propulsive sound, featuring each member taking on vocal duties and engaging the audience with classic Mardi Gras Indian-style call-and-response chanting. In paying homage to trailblazers like Wild Magnolias and Golden Eagles, with the latter featuring the vocal stylings of Boudreaux's father, Monk Boudreaux, The Rumble becomes a torchbearer for preserving the legacies and traditions of their community. While deeply rooted in centuries-old traditions, the group injects new layers of depth into their performances, ensuring that the cultural flame continues to burn brightly for generations to come.Attending a live show by The Rumble isn't just a musical event; it's an invitation to participate in a living culture. As bold and passionate culture-bearers, The Rumble offers audiences an opportunity to witness the evolution of a centuries-old tradition, ensuring its vitality and relevance for the next generation.https://therumbleband.com/Support the showThanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/

Cole WIlliams of the Greater New Orleans Citizen's Relief Team talks with host Max Rameau about liberating homes owned by the city of New Orleans, renovating them, and moving in unhoused people.Described as having “the heart of Bob Marley, soul of Sam Cooke and grit of Etta James”, New Orleans-based Cole Williams and The Cole Williams Band (CWB) has rooted their sound in the tradition of Gil Scott-Heron, creating songs that reflect the everyday experiences and hopes of Black people all around the world. Their new album, “Give Power to the People'' are anthems of the Movement for Black Lives and certainly for people struggling to make sense out of this dangerous and hopeful moment.Over the course of her career, Cole has provided vocals and percussion for Joey Bada$$, Chiddy Bang, Beats By The Pound, Aloe Blacc, Little Jackie, Diane Birch, Somi, Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam, Kaissa, Dana Fuchs, Pimps Of Joytime, Holy Warriors (Harold Brown, Bill Summers, Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes), and commercial/tv recordings for CoverGirl, JCPenney, Suave, Smash, and Khloe and Kourtney Take Miami. CWBs' live performance highlights include The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Joshua Tree Music Festival, French Quarter Festival, Blue Note NYC and opened for India Arie, Emily King, Ozomatli, The Wild Magnolias, Corey Henry and Treme Funktet, and Lauryn Hill.Following frequent street demonstrations at New Orleans' City Hall, Williams and The Greater New Orleans Citizens Relief Team organized and succeeded in getting the City to provide emergency housing in empty hotels in August 2020, and now they are renovating City-owned blighted houses with the presently unhoused people that will live in them. “We are calling all creatives to action. Now is the time for musicians, artists, dancers, rappers, poets, actors and actresses to unite and design a culture where we share our gifts, skills, talents and resources with the least of ours, specifically in the unhoused community, to create a world where wealth is shared equally, and white supremacy cannot survive”    The bedrock of The Cole Williams Band's new album and community organizing follows the course civil rights veteran, Ella Baker, taught that created a successful and historic freedom movement. “Give Power To The People”, articulates the core of their organizing: go to the poorest people, create a shared plan for advancement, raise the spirits and awareness of our people, gain broad support and make it happen. “We believe the practice of humanity is the blueprint for freedom and equality”.See more of the work of host Max Rameau at pacapower.org. I've interviewed a number if guitarists on my program. Cats like Kenny Burrell who were making up the rules with Donald Byrd and Elvin Jones in Detroit. Locked in a pocket of communal musical connection the same way my guest can hit flurries of notes that have you flying and showing you the way. Regional Music in the Americas was rampant in Appalchia, Chicago Blues, Gulf Coast, and the North Bay SoCa Latin funk escapade. It was also rampant in New Orleans where my guest hails from. He came of age with his musical brothers Art, George and Zigaboo playing music that felt good be it swamp funk or ballads it was emotive. With the feel of the Caribbean and Gulf Coast Rhythms. There were pockets of players from Chuck Rainey and Bernard Purdie Richard Tee in New York To Joe Sample and Wilton Felder  who came from the wards in Houston. Pockets of soul intermeshing with Gospel and Wild Magnolias in A Cabbage Alley of pimps, dancers, lights, jazz, blues you can use for enlightenment. My guest today is in the same master guitar class as Kenny Burrell Grant Green, Pat Martino and Melvin Sparks. If he had chose to go to New York he would have wound up being a jazzer with a recognizable name like the those above but the love was odd metered and melodic be it in the right place at the wrong time @ Sea-Saint records. My guest has a funk style like David T. Walker and Phil Upchurch but he is part of a family whose  sum is always greater than its parts. He got the memo about being a decent human being and not standing in the middle of the road with some Wild Tchoupitoulis. [APWW PGM #458] [Originally aired in 2005] Aug. 29, 2015 is the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and the catastrophic failure of the Mississippi River levees that put the city of New Orleans under water. In tribute to the city’s struggles of the last 10 years, we are rebroadcasting our Hip Deep program made in spring 2005, a few short months before life in New Orleans was turned upside down. “Living in New Orleans, Part 1″ takes you to the rambunctious street music scene in the Crescent City around Mardi Gras time. This is one town where kids still pick up tubas, and young brass bands have lots of work, parading along the same funky streets where jazz was born. We’ll get inside the world of the Mardi Gras Indians as Hip Deep producer Ned Sublette, who is spending the year on the ground in New Orleans, talks with musician and educator Big Chief Donald Harrison; Sylvester Francis of the Backstreet Cultural Museum; scholar and former New Orleans resident Joseph Roach of Yale University, author of Cities of the Dead; and Vicki Mayer of Tulane University. We’ll hear music from Kermit Ruffins and Rebirth Brass Band, Cyril Neville and the Uptown All-Stars, and Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias. Produced by Ned Sublette.
