What did Pulp Fiction teach me about systems? Let's break it down with Mr. Wolf! Remember Winston Wolf? He's the go-to guy for problem-solving. Just like him, I work on helping people solve their business problems by focusing on systems. Recently, while browsing LinkedIn, I noticed something interesting. Every question was about strategy—how to solve this, fix that, and more. But here's the thing: flashy strategies won't fix your problems if your systems aren't solid. It's like trying to build a house without a strong foundation. Strategy is crucial, but it only works when you have the right systems in place. Once you've got that foundation, then you can build your strategy and play to your company's strengths while addressing weaknesses. Let's solve problems the Winston Wolf way—assessing the situation and implementing the right tactics.
Finally, somebody's talking about Pulp Fiction! A.I. made us watch this Tarantino classic that's already been discussed to death. But we've got hard hitting questions like where are all the theme restaurants these days? Why is Winston Wolf wearing a tuxedo at 8am? And is this movie actually the first podcast?? Plus our very special guest James Yates joins us for maybe the toughest game A.I. has given us yet! Support us on Patreon!

In this episode of the Data Malarkey podcast, data storyteller Sam Knowles talks to Mark Evans, one of the most successful marketers of his generation. Mark worked for ten years at Mars, rising to be Brand Director of Petcare Europe, before spells at 118118 Media UK and HSBC. In 2012, Mark joined leading UK insurance business Direct Line Group where he helped to transform the business and the fortunes of its brands. Perhaps most notably – and in the teeth of stiff competition from the price comparison websites – he relaunched and reenergised the company's flagship Direct Line brand. In that time, as well as championing the role of data and analytics in the company's decision making, he even persuaded Harvey Keitel to reprise his role as Winston Wolf from Pulp Fiction, and in the process to drive the brand to new heights. In 2023, Mark's gone plural, and is a non-executive director, coach, speaker, and podcaster. Indeed, he's the regular co-host of “The Places We'll Go Marketing Show”, now WITH well over 100 episodes. Guests have included many of the great names in modern marketing, from Unilever's Paul Polman to Professor Philip Kotter, from Mark Ritson to Byron Sharp – though for those who know these academic luminaries, they won't be surprised to hear Ritson and Sharp didn't appear together. Our conversation was recorded remotely, via the medium of Riverside.fm, on 14 March 2023. Thanks to Joe Hickey for production support. Podcast artwork by Shatter Media. Voice over by Samantha Boffin. Mark describes his route into marketing as neither typical nor traditional. An economics graduate with a Masters in corporate finance, the job he was due to take up at Hill Samuel disappeared “in a puff of smoke”, thanks to a corporate merger. Throughout his career, he's brought the rigour, analytical skills, and test-and-learn approach of financial markets to a wide variety of different marketing roles. Every decision he's taken and encouraged his teams to take has been driven by the evidence. This has helped him to elevate marketing and marketing decision-making up the food chains in corporate hierarchies. It's driven by his desire to test, prove or disprove hypotheses, a skill he cut his teeth studying high school science. We talk at length about the way that Direct Line Group uses the Net Promoter Score (NPS) – a measure of how likely customers are to recommend products and services to friends and family – as the single metric everyone in the business was measured against. This unified, simplified approach made it clear to everyone in the business how important both measurement and measurement of customer experience is to the top and bottom line. For the better experience customers have with a business, the more likely they are to remain customers – and recommend the company to others. Mark details the transformation journey he led from 2019 to turn Direct Line into a properly agile business, as well as his passion for building and championing “whole brain teams” across the full spectrum of neurodiversity. Many on the systemizing end of the autistic spectrum are brilliant at solving analytical challenges but at the same time find the interview process difficult. This means that many who could be hugely valuable to all sorts of businesses remain outside the workforce. Mark details his experience of working with the social enterprise Auticon – whose purpose is to help businesses “become a destination for neurodivergent talent” – to address this. Forget that other "Wolf of Wall Street" guy. The only Wolf worth knowing is the character of Winston Wolf from Pulp Fiction. In my opinion, he should have had had is own spinoff movie due to the character being such a big hit in the movie. Over the years, I have solved some of the biggest problems you can imagine for my clients and helped them through things no one else could. Experience is what allows this. Tune in and reach out if you need any problems solved. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/torontorealestate/message
In March 2020, top UK insurance brand Direct Line went ahead with a planned reboot of its successful brand. With a continued focus on the messsaging of the brand as "fixers", the character of Winston Wolf was replaced with a group of superheroes. Host Will Francis quizzes Mark Evans on their decision to change something that already worked, and how it panned out during a pandemic. They also look at why brand is so central to everything you do online and how it is perceived by your public, stakeholders, and your employees. Mark Evans is Director of Marketing and Digital at Direct Line Group and runs his own podcast, The Places We'll Go Show. Subscribe to all DMI Ahead of the Game podcasts on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Real Estate REality Check | Real Estate & Business Career Success Education and Training
After a nearly 7-month hiatus, I am happy to have on as my first guest back on Real Estate REality Check someone who I consider to be the equivalent of the Pulp Fiction character Winston Wolf when it comes to making a difference for the restaurant industry that has been, in the words of Mick Jagger, absolutely “SHATTERED” by the impact of COVID-19. Even if you have been doing your best impression of “The Bubble Boy” character from Seinfeld, Andrew Rigie, the Executive Director of the New York City Hospitality Alliance, has been like Elvis Presley ... you know, as in EVERYWHERE, as he goes about channeling Winston Wolf’s mantra of “I solve problems” for the 100’s of thousands of NYC restaurant workers that have been devastated by the pandemic. Andrew knows that without food and beverage coming back to being an integral part of our lives and the fabric that makes NYC so great, the road to recovery is going to be a long and treacherous one.
Episode 5 The Winston Wolf of Hardcore Fests with Rich Hall Rich Hall is one of the most involved and dedicated promoters from the late 90s and billed some of the most outstanding, diverse and sometimes eclectic shows from 97 to 2011. His impact on Hardcore was felt throughout the country as well with helping at various festivals etc. Starting out helping Tyler King of Kingsize Bookings at the Legendary CBGB's, Rich ushered in a new era into HC at the end of the 90s, working with the bands that would bend and break all the genre trappings. From ISIS, Converge, to American Nightmare, From Autumn To Ashes, Poison the Well, the world of hardcore was once again seeing a new path carved and Rich was in the right place, New York City, at the time to foster these bands, while still getting a lesson from the school of hard knocks from the OG's of NYHC. His talent handling CBGBs and other NYC would lend himself to work with various record labels in promotional depts and later as an A&R. He was recruited to help out a fest in Syracuse, NY which was starting to grow in popularity and became the man who put out fires, ran stages and keep things under control for a few years at Hellfest. We even talk about the fallout of Hellfest 04 and the disaster of Hellfest 2005. His experience and skills were put to the test in various other festivals, including most recently This Is Hardcore. Aside from promoting and working within the Record end of the Music Industry, Rich Hall is a painter who lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife and son. He still has some plans for the future to despite the state of the world right now so we should stay tuned on what he has up next. This story is a great tale of what anyone who wants to get involved in the backend side of working/running shows has to do to start. He has alot to say, great stories and an inspiring yet direct tone to how he went about learning from the old school and applying it to the new school of his era. He is another creative, obsessive and dedicated person whose story lends to each of our previous episodes and I hope you enjoy his lesson on never vouching for anyone. https://www.richhallartwork.bigcartel.com https:// www.instagram.com/rich_hall You can email him at 1000knives@me.com Rich Photo by Chrissie Good @chrissiegood on IG

In this week’s Lockdown Bonus Episode me and Matt revisit conversations we’ve had with our Boxing Insiders. We have the inimitable Jon Pegg; the Winston Wolf of the fight game in Al Siesta; top cornerman Mark Seltzer; Sky presenter Anna Woolhouse and the hugely experienced trainer and hand-wrapper to the stars Russ Anber. Between them they’ve performed pretty much every role you care to name and it was great fun getting their take and insight on all aspects of the sport.
“I think fast, I talk fast, and I need you guys to act fast if you want to get out of this. So pretty please, with sugar on top, clean the f***** car!” - Winston Wolf, Pulp Fiction Extraordinary times call for extraordinary teams and potentially extraordinary leadership. That can be confusing when you have an established culture, but we all know in times of rapid change we don't have long to make decisions. The better a team functions and the better clarity it has of its purpose the more likely it will be successful. Andy joins Dan to talk through his experience of what it's been like leading a team through the extraordinary times due to COVID-19. To learn more, please visit https://www.impactinternational.com

This week myself and Matt Macklin sit down with one of the sport's truly fascinating characters, Mr Al Siesta. Introduction: Today’s guest is Maury Golbert, co-chair of the real estate group and partner in the tax department of Berdon LLP, ranked among the top 15 accounting firms in the New York metropolitan area and top 100 in the United States. Maury is certainly not what one would describe as an underachiever, given his CPA, JD, and LLM. He is looked upon by his real estate (and other) clients for advice pertaining to all facets of a transaction, including due diligence, structuring, wealth preservation and enhancement, and workouts as well. When Maury’s not busy being a rock star in the world of accounting and taxation - in addition to spending as much time as possible with his wife Gail and their two daughters - Maury is passionate about biking and truly great wines. Episode Notes: At 2:55, Maury notes that a majority of real estate developers and entrepreneurs give off a sense of optimism and positivity. At 3:51, Maury explains why sometimes the most valuable piece of advice to give someone is a “no.” At 4:49, Golbert shares that there is no shortcut within his industry as the learning curve is long and flat, and as a result one must continuously be learning on a daily basis. At 7:09, he uses the sports analogy of the “game slowing down” and being able to see the defense in comparison to when one is repeatedly practicing and putting in work. At 9:05, Maury reveals his career “oh my moment” of him essentially working on a complex transaction all by himself. At 13:32, Golbert channels Winston Wolf of Pulp Fiction, and tells us that clients come to him with problems, not with solutions. At 15:55, he touches upon long-time clients and forming multi-generational relationships, how expectations vary with time, and the importance of being responsive to clients. At 19:11, Maury advises on the uncertainty and complexity of changes to the recently enacted Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, and shares that there are opportunities to be had, but many pitfalls exist as well. At 23:57, Golbert speaks about making a difference for others through education, and strongly believes that in this country everyone should have a clean place to sleep and should not be going to bed hungry. At 30:57, he discusses giving people skills that put them in a position to help themselves. At 32:09, Maury feels that there is no substitute to understanding what is in front of you, as one must always be properly prepared. At 34:59, Golbert notes the pertinence of being likeable in business, and the ability of connecting with people on a personal level while having some fun while doing so. At 36:36, he shares that he is not a natural networker, but his accessibility and resourcefulness has helped him a great deal in forming and cultivating relationships. At 42:40, Maury divulges how he finds the balance between leveraging technology and old school methods of communication. He believes that there is no substitute for picking up the phone. At 47:05, Golbert mentions that he enjoys both road and mountain biking, snowboarding, and any activity that forces him to detach from his phone or work while getting his adrenaline going. At 50:08, Maury Golbert closes the podcast with a duel message: (1) every day is a new day, and (2) one possesses complete control of his or her own destiny.

Technical Program Manager Interview: With Alessandro Catorcini A fabulous interview with Alessandro Catorcini! He has over 20 years of experience in tech. He spent over 15 years at Microsoft in various roles from being a software architect, a Principal Group Program Manager. He’s worked at Amazon and now he and I work at Oracle’s Cloud Infrastructure Team also known as OIC. He is one of those people I see who are solving problems that are large at scale. And another very interesting tit-bit is that he has done over 200 Interviews in the last 2 years at OCI. Technical Program Manager Interview: With Alessandro Catorcini PART II of this interview lives here :) We talk about:- TPM interviewing tips. Five core traits of Technical Program Managers. TPM leveling. What are the things to watch out for during an Interview in General. Compare the role across various organizations. Eg: Microsoft vs Oracle. What are some of the most understated qualities a TPM candidate must have? How do you evaluate a candidate's technical aptitude? Listen and enjoy ! Mario Gerard ps: You can find more podcasts here. And the next episode here. Transcript of the podcast;- Interview with Alessandro Catorcini Mario: Hello and welcome to the TPM podcast with Mario Gerard. I plan on doing a series of interviews with fellow TPM's and PM's, with top leaders and invite them to share their ideas with the TPM community. So, if you're interested in sharing your ideas, do reach out to me. Today, I have with me a very special guest, Alessandro Catorcini, and we're going to chat about a couple of things, primarily revolving around the fundamental characteristics of TPMS, how we level TPMS and what the TPM journey looks like. Alessandro has over 20 years of experience. He spent nearly 15 years at Microsoft doing various roles from being a software architect to a group principal program manager. He then worked at Amazon and now he's at Oracle's Cloud Infrastructure team where he and I are colleagues. He's one of those people I see who take and solve large skilled problems. Another very interesting tidbit about Alessandro is he's done over 200 interviews in the last two years at OCI. Alessandro, why don't you introduce yourself. Alessandro: Hi everyone, and thank you, Mario, for the introduction, it's kind of large-scale problems. Yeah, well more than large-scale problems, I've solved a lot of problems of every size, some of which happened to be larger than others. Mario: Yeah, today and that's when I saw your tagline, 'I solve problems' or something to that context. Alessandro: Yeah, that came out of a joke actually. When I was working with a networking team, they started calling me behind my back you Mr. Wolf, like Winston Wolf of Pulp Fiction. Mario: Cool. So, you have also done a lot of interviews for us. Alessandro: I did, yes. Mario: Approximately over the last two years what do you think the count is? Alessandro: Actually, I was looking at the scoreboard, there is a keyboard of the interviews which is actually funny. I was at 263, I think, since January 2017. Mario: Wow! That's a lot of interviews. And you do them for TPMs, PMs, and Ms. Alessandro: Yes, pretty much anything. Mario: Across the board. Alessandro: I have done engineers, PMs, TPMs, even admins, solution architects, some have been really interesting stories, guys that came for one job and got something completely different. Mario: Let's start with, like from your perspective, how do you define the TPM rule? Alessandro: There's a story that I remember hearing at a symposium of PMs at Microsoft probably a decade-plus ago. Yes, and it stuck with me because it captures the essence. If you think of a team like a big cake, you can start slicing it and you could slice a very clean slice that would be engineering, a very clean slice that would be product management, a very clean slice that is QA. When you're done cutting slices,

Introduction: Today we are lucky enough to have with us none other than Michael Santora, a man who in every sense of the word is truly on a mission to make a difference for his clients, the skylines and infrastructures of cities globally, and for those not as fortunate. In my professional dealings with Michael, I have found him to be the Winston Wolf of architecture, design, due diligence, code consulting and expediting resolution. Yes, like the character portrayed by Harvey Keitel in the classic film Pulp Fiction, Michael solves problems! Given that the historical tradition of a crown, among other things, embodies that of knowledge, power, triumph, honor and wealth, the mantra of the firm he co-founded, namely Crown Architecture and Consulting, is that of ensuring that their designs and efforts will simultaneously maximize the potential of their client’s property and budget, while also making a difference for the private and public sectors. Episode Notes: At 3:16, Michael Santora stresses the importance of reading comprehension in his business. At 4:28, he discusses taking pride in your work and having a full understanding of your final product, because at the end of the day your name is attached. At 5:05, Michael talks about work ethic. At 5:57, he touches upon setting goals and to some, money being freedom as well as a measure of success. At 7:27, Michael notes that good service comes with upfront reality - being blunt and not creating a sense of false hope, while simultaneously being optimistic. At 9:05, he points out that Crown Architecture and Consulting likes to be different with the subtle things, and that Crown is always evolving based on the feedback it receives. Michael describes how he and Crown are different, given that they, like others, swim in the same direction as everyone else, but often zig-zag quite a bit up stream. At 10:18, Michael shares that “It’s hard to argue with logic and reason.” At 11:53, he advises, “I want to profitable off of the intelligent decisions I make and the value I create.” At 12:55, Michael discusses change in the real estate industry, more specifically retail and last mile industrial. At 13:51, he talks about building with flexibility in design, so buildings can evolve with changing times. At 14:11, Michael informs us of Crown’s partnership with Scott Brownrigg out of London, and Smart Shed, a new type of distribution center concept. At 16:06, he shares winning the World Architecture Foundation award for his firm’s concept of redesigning the Park Avenue medians. At 18:27, Michael explains his love for the challenge of making something profitable, and growing a “business.” At 21:16, he discusses having integrity in design and construction. Building bigger, better and more efficient! At 23:53, Michael shares his involvement in the ACE program, mentoring, and sitting on the board at Wentworth Institute of Technology. At 26:01, he takes us back to his first job in real estate, working as a project manager for a design-build firm. At 30:05, he talks about the topic of failure and his failure to successfully pitch Platform Media to MTA at 22 years old. At 33:09, Michael dives into his passion for large scale infrastructure projects. At 38:10, Michael Santora closes it out with the message of pursuing your dreams.

This week: we make numerous big announcements about the future and shape of our website as we roll out a weekly games column, officially invite the world to come play Starbound with us on our dedicated server at starboundihc.com (details can be found in the link to our anchor page below), reveal our secret software project that we hope will make running Steamcmd headless Linux servers easier and much less insane for sysadmins, and then - once we finally get around to covering this week in the Linux gaming - we disclose our first impressions of the (possibly misunderstood) "Desert Strike"-but-now-with-mechanized robots "Hybrid Wars," get in touch with our inner doomed-disaster-survivor in the Allan Jude-like remote frozen wastelands of Canada in "The Long Dark," and finally get the kinks worked out of our inter-dimensional supply chain of knock-off commemorative spoons in "ClusterTruck." Remember, we're Linux users: the way we "heart" logistics makes UPS middle-management wet their pants in terror. All of this and nearly TEN super-excellent titles in this week's crop of deals ("Cities Skylines," and several totally rocking games that are entirely free - in this case, actually as in "beer" here, not as in "freedom")... all this, zombies, vampires, Winston Wolf, intergallactic subatomic particle galactic warfare simulations, and a party video game for teetolaers so uninspired that they require a multiplayer party game that contains its own inner mini-drinking game ready for use out of the box! Truly, it is the end of the world...
