Lameness in cats can create challenges for vets and owners. In this podcast, Karen Perry joins the Vet Times Podcast again to discuss the most commonly encountered conditions, diagnosis, research, surgery and long-term management. ––––––––––––––– Karen has written the Focus article in Vet Times (Volume 51, issue 16, Pages 6-10 – 20 April issue) “Pouncing on pain – managing feline orthopaedic conditions”, which can be found in full in the “Pain Management” collection, in the Companion Animal hub, on our CPD+ service. [https://bit.ly/3zW2tBQ] Within the article, Karen discusses two commonly encountered causes of lameness in cats – medial humeral epicondylitis and feline cranial cruciate ligament failure – and evaluates the experience and literature base used to direct diagnosis and treatment. ––––––––––––––– Karen graduated from The University of Edinburgh Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies (R[D]SVS) in 2005. After a short period in mixed practice, she completed an internship in small animal orthopaedics and neurosurgery at Fitzpatrick Referrals in Surrey, prior to undertaking a residency in small animal surgery back at the R(D)SVS. Foundations of Amateur Radio It's the morning after the day before. I've been calling CQ for 24 hours and for the first time in my life after a contest I still have my voice. That in and of itself is novel. I also don't have ringing ears, that's a blessing. I have learnt heaps and had fun doing it. I made contacts and I heard stations across the globe and I did it all from the comfort of my shack chair. Before I dig in and expand, the contest I just completed ran for 24 hours. I didn't sit at my radio for all of it, nor was my radio on for all of it. I managed to have lunch, dinner, desert, breakfast and morning tea. I snuck in a few naps and I managed to help with bringing in the shopping. My station did not transmit unattended at any time in case you're wondering. My setup consisted of a little 11 year old netbook computer running the current version of Debian Linux and the heart of this adventure, the software called fldigi. The computer is connected to my Yaesu FT-857d via three cables, well, two and a half. A microphone and a headphone lead that combine into the data port in the back of the radio. The other cable is a USB CAT cable, a Computer Assisted Tuning cable, that plugs into the CAT port on the back of the radio. I also used an external monitor to have my main contest screen on and used it to display the main fldigi window. My license class allows me access to a selected number of amateur bands, 80m, 40m, 15m, 10m, 2m and 70cm. I managed at least one RTTY contact on each band. As I described previously, my radio is set to use Single Side Band and the audio from the radio is fed via the microphone socket on the computer into fldigi that processes the information. Similarly, when I transmit, the audio is generated via fldigi and leaves the computer via the headphone socket and goes into the radio as a Single Side Band audio signal. The information in the audio is all RTTY, a digital mode that I've described previously. The software is using Audio Frequency Shift Keying, AFSK, simulating the switching between the two RTTY frequencies. On my screen I have a waterfall display that shows all the signals that are happening within the 2.3 kHz audio stream that's coming from the radio. Fldigi is also decoding this in real-time and showing each decode as a virtual channel in a list. Click on a channel entry and your next transmission will happen at that frequency. If you've ever used WSJT-X this will sound very familiar. That's the mechanics of what I've been doing. So, what did I learn in this adventure? Well, most of Australia goes to sleep at night, at least the ones that do RTTY. I have evidence of exactly one station on-air, and that was only because they were named in the DX Cluster, which by the way this contest allows as assistance. Since then I've found logs from at least two more stations. Local contacts did happen during the more civil hours and in total I managed ten of them. You may think that's not much for say 12 hours of work, but that's 5 Watts QRP, or low power, RTTY contacts, in an actual contest, on a new antenna, from my shack, dodging thunderstorms and learning to use filters and levels. You might not be impressed, but I'm absolutely stoked! During the midnight-to-dawn run, on 40m, when there were double points to be had, which I missed out on, I did manage to hear several stations across Europe, 14,000 km away, which means that I can pretty much count on global coverage with my current setup. Sadly they didn't hear me, too many competing stations, but I'm sure that with practice I'll manage to contact them too. The software crashed once. That's not nice. It seems to have a habit of corrupting one of the preference files, which prevents it from starting up. That's also not nice. I hasten to add that I don't yet know the source of this. It may well be a dud-hard-disk sector on my ancient laptop, rather than the software, so I'm not assigning blame here. Getting started with fldigi is an adventure. It's not point-and-click, nor plug-and-play, more like running a mainframe whilst cranking the handle, but when you get it to fly there's lots to love about this tool. Other things that worked well were that I'd spent some preparation time getting the keyboard macros right. These are pre-defined bits of text that you send as you're calling CQ and making a contact. They're a whole topic in and of themselves, so I'll skip past the detail and just mention that I was very happy with the choices I made, gathered from years of voice-only contacts, reading RTTY contest information and looking for exchange details. From a technical perspective, I used both contest modes, "Running" and "Search and Pounce". Running is when you call CQ, Pouncing is when they call CQ. The running was by far the most successful for me. I'm not yet sure if that was a reflection on how much I still have to learn about levels. One thing that I can say with confidence is that there's absolutely nothing like having a wall of RTTY signals to learn how to make sure you're actually decoding something useful. I spent a good couple of the wee hours tuning my levels. I would like to thank the stations who came back to my call and for those who tried without me noticing them. I had a blast. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

In this episode, we observe social customs related to health and marriage, as depicted in Sangam Literary work, Natrinai 322, penned by Madurai Paalasiriyan Chenthan Kotranaar. But does the film deserve to be in the centre of Oscar buzz or does it really cough up a hairball? This week, we’re joined by Allen Chabot and newcomer Naomi Bain to talk about welcoming outsiders, T.S. Eliot and what went wrong… horribly, horribly wrong…

The Jussie Smollett Hoax. A Visit with Jennifer Kerns of The Daily Caller, whose recent essay on Smollett has been aggressively censored by both Facebook and Instagram. Are social media leftists suggesting their "community standards" do not allow the exposure of fake hate crimes? Could Smollett be a Modern Tawana Brawley? Has Al Sharpton learned much of anything since 1987? Unfortunately, MSM tactics never seem to change, and "MAGA Country" shouldn't be expecting apologies anytime soon -- much less a formal correction to the hoax. “People want brands to step in and solve things that government can’t.” With the latest news of #BoycottNRA and the #MeToo movement, it could seem that this is an idea plucked from recent headlines. But the role of business in social issues has been a part of the conversation for centuries. Anne Bahr Thompson is a leading expert on this and author of the new book Do Good.We discussed corporate social responsibility, brand citizenship, and more on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast presented by Twenty20. About Anne Bahr Thompson With more than 25 years of experience as a global brand strategist, Anne Bahr Thompson is an accomplished researcher, writer and speaker, the pioneer of the strategic framework of Brand Citizenship®, and a Trust Across America 2018 Top Thought Leader in Trust. A former executive director of strategy and planning and head of consulting at Interbrand, the world’s leading brand consultancy, Anne founded Onesixtyfourth, a boutique consultancy, to integrate cultural shifts & a social conscience into brand development. Her writings have appeared in Economist Books, hbr.org, The Guardian, Brand Quarterly, Bloomberg News, and many other publications. Anne’s new book, Do Good: Embracing Brand Citizenship to Fuel Both Purpose and Profit, is available in stores and online now. Episode Highlights ICYMI: Do Good at SXSW. Last week, I mentioned Anne’s work and her new book Do Goodlive episode from SXSW during our where we discussed brands taking a stand socially and politically. Listen now. Did you know … Being a sucker for interesting brand names, I had to start the conversation with a question about the name of Anne’s consulting practice, Onesixtyfourth. I won’t paraphrase (I’m not sure I can paraphrase). It involves three Egyptian gods and an essential ingredient in taking things apart. Curious? You’ll have to listen to the episode for more. SPOILER: It involves leaving room for magic and exploration. Who excels at brand leadership? The usual CSR suspects always show up: TOMS, Warby Parker, Seventh Generation, Whole Foods, and Patagonia. But in 2011, Anne was surprised to see Apple leading the pack at a time when they were being lambasted for supplier relations. Why the disconnect? “Because Apple enriches people’s lives. It’s a huge ‘me’ proposition.” How brands can “do good” in five steps. Anne has broken this down into a five-step process: (1) You have to deliver on trust — have you done what you said you’ll do? (2) Enrichment — how are you enriching customers’ lives? To the previous point, Apple does this. (3) Responsibility — first to your employees and then the environment; this is where the pivot happens between being a “me brand” and a “we brand.” (4) Community — bringing people together through shared ideas. IBM did this with their values jam. (5) Contribution — this final step is when it’s part of the enterprise like Seventh Generation. Taking the first step. If this sounds scary, read Anne’s book for a step-by-step guide. When I asked Anne for a first step, she replied: “Courage. It takes courage to do something that doesn’t have a formula. It takes vulnerability.” Pouncing on a brand vs. giving a brand a chance. In today’s fast-moving media zeitgeist, many brands stumble and many are called out. “You have to punish companies behaving irresponsibly. But anyone who’s trying deserves a chance. We need to come together to solve problems.” What brand has made Anne smile recently? I was worried when Anne said she was going to deflect this question but her reason was insightful. “There’s no one brand. The ones that make me smile are the ones people city in my research.” A valid and data-driven answer. To learn more, go to brandcitizenship.com and connect with Anne on Twitter and LinkedIn. Listen Up! Don't mean't to scare you, Ems, but there's a new sheriff in town and her name is BIZZY PRESTON. I guess? Or like maybe it's spelled Bissy...? Either way, IT'S REVENGECAST #NONOTESEDITION!!!! You couldn't paint a prettier picture of the Hamptons in mid-summer. July 4th is just around the corner and what do rich people enjoy celebrating more than things were going swimmingly (like literally, because they were in the ocean (okay but technically i guess they were on a raft)) until that Bismuth B Preston, PR Flack To The Stars, showed up on their doorstep with a publicity plan, a suitcase, and a dream (and a large advance on a colossal invoice). Now it's like all we talk about is "reputation," and "how to reform the Grayson name," and "you kids wouldn't lie to me behind my back about having emotional affairs with poor ex-girlfriends whose chance at a peaceful, productive life was shattered directly by you (much like their spine) over one fateful night and a fifth of Banker's Club," right? Right? You know what they say. You can't spell "business" without "bizzy," and the Graysons paid for the only Bizzy in town and if that doesn't also round up to the best Bizzy in town then I'll eat my hat! Only problem is (aside from the part where Bizzy seems supremely bad at her job): a certain Buzzard Prusten has history with a certain Archibald J. Nolan "Nolz" Nolan The Third. And by "history" I mean a "traumatic and public tabloid outing that rent wide the rift between him and his homophobic father once and for all (just when I was about to bridge it with money, Ems; just when I was about to buy my poor father's love back with all my new money. ;_; ;_; ;_; ;_; ;_; ;_; ;_; ;_;) Here's what's really real: I just don't buy Nolan pining for an abusive father that abandoned him except for the fact that Nolan is so incredibly lonely. So, in that sense, the pieces do really fit. In a different sense, once you create a sex dolphin robot and imbue it with a human soul created through mad alchemy--like, quite frankly... Hey, I dunno. Maybe that's fine. Maybe that's normal. I can't presume to say. It's reasonable to say that NolzOne, locked up in the Basement's Basement, and being a real pill about it, isn't holding up his end of the bargain. Emily certainly isn't!! All she cares about is Revenge! And, like, it's one of those things where your friend gets really really into something and you're kinda like "it's cool I guess..."but she's like it's not """coool""" it's called Revenge and um actually??? It's super great? So get on my level, put on the Google Glass, and start Revenging before I officially dissolve this friendship just like your dad did. In this episode of Revengecast, aside from Bizzy Bs and their propensity for "readers," I'm not sure of a whole heck of a lot of merit actually happened. Like I guess it's fair to say that Victoria maybe spent a little too much time Pouncing on Peas to really get any substantive Burn Work done; then again, in that sense we used to say about games like Gigawing, "it's the slow bullet that kills," and I haven't seen a slower bullet than Sarah J. Cupcakes in about an age. I guess it's fair to say that Aiden was excommunicated from the Hamptons (again (again again?)) I guess, you might think, it's also fair to say that a Macaron is not a Macaroon (though it is, perhaps, a "Jackaroon"), but we've all been down that rabbit hole before (and somehow that, plus all his other nebulously terrible characteristics) didn't prevent Jack Porter from getting laid by the Total Wash Of Charisma that is Magaux Lemarchal, whose casually tousled hair is, and will remain for some time, a thing to behold. AAAH. WE FORGOT TO MENTION HOW VICTORIA SENDS AIDEN OFF WITH A INDEPENDENCE DAY BURN. THAT'S WHAT WE DID. THAT'S WHAT WE FORGOT FORGOT. What use is an F-call? Making contacts on HF is a challenge. Over the past few weeks I've talked about some of the things you can do to make your HF life simpler. At no time have I advocated sitting on a frequency calling CQ. You could do that if you liked, but there are times and places to be more successful in that endeavour also. If you feel the need to call CQ, then pick a frequency that'll be visited by others. Make sure you're not at the end of the band where no-one goes, rather pick a spot next to another big fish. Leave a gap and set up shop next door. Think of it as fishing with bait. The big station is the bait, you're the little minnow on the side, easy to pick off if you're heard, ignored if not. The nice thing about being next to a big station is that people are slowing down to hear it and in doing so might also hear you, which of course is the aim of the game. If I look back at the contacts I've made so far, calling CQ is the least effective way of making a contact. It's not a waste of time, but there are better ways. Searching and Pouncing, that is finding and getting a station, one at a time, is much more effective. Use the tools at your disposal. Rotate your antenna if you have a rotator, tune slowly, and look around. Stations are often in a QSO with another station, so you might not hear both sides of the discussion. You might tune past when the station you cannot hear is talking, so you'll never know that there is a big loud station on the same frequency. Sometimes you hear a loud station, but it's a station responding to a CQ request. If that's the case, set up shop next door and call them as soon as their QSO is finished, you'll pick up weird and wonderful stations along the way. If you hear a station that is just too far away, have a go anyway. You don't know what their conditions are like, for all you know they have a very quiet QTH and can hear the proverbial mosquito fart. There are many failures in HF communications, making the successes all the sweeter. Have a crack! I'm Onno VK6FLAB
What use is an F-call? I've participated in several contests since I became an Amateur. When I talk about contesting, I often hear the same response, "Contesting is not for me". In talking to some of those people, it's clear to me that often Contesting as an activity is not really understood. I'm not going to talk to you about how much fun it is, and it is, or how much you learn, because you do, or winning, because you can, I'm going to talk about the mechanics of contesting. At it's heart, contesting is nothing more and nothing less than making a contact between two stations and exchanging some information and getting points for the effort. How that precisely works depends entirely on the contest itself. On a typical contest, the exchange is the readability and signal strength, which in most contests is 59, followed by a serial number. So, the information exchanged might be 59001 for your first contact, 59002 for the second and so-on. The other station will supply their information as it relates to them, if they've been working hard, their number to you might be 59402 and the next number they'll use will be 59403 and so on. The process is known as giving out a number. Sometimes the information is the number of years you've been an Amateur, sometimes it's the ITU or CQ zone you're in, it depends on the contest. There are two basic ways you can participate, either by calling CQ, or by Searching and Pouncing, and some do both, sometimes even at the same time. In the CQ participation, you find a clear frequency and call CQ, something like this: CQ Contest, VK6FLAB Victor Kilo Six Foxtrot Lima Alpha Bravo, Contest. Rinse and repeat. If you're lucky, someone will come back to your call with their callsign, at which point you can send your numbers, they'll send theirs and you start from the top. If you're Searching and Pouncing, you'll tune up and down the dial, looking for stations calling CQ. Wait until you hear the pause in their call, and throw your callsign into the gap, once. If they call your callsign, give out your number and you're done. The recommendation is to start at the top and scan down, then go back to the top and scan down again. That way you'll cover the whole band in a systematic fashion. Some other things to know. You should take note of the numbers sent and received as well as the station worked, this is called logging and is a whole new topic all by itself. The contacts you made during a contest will count towards points if you decide to submit your log. These contacts will also count towards your DXCC if you should choose to keep track of how many countries you've worked. I've stayed with the basics here to give you a taste of what it looks like. Have a go at a contest, they're on most, if not all weekends, often more than one at the same time, all over the world. I'm Onno VK6FLAB
