In this episode of The Birth Lounge Podcast, Dr. Neel Shah dives into what we know about c-sections, why our country has such an astronomical rate of them, and what you can do to decrease your chances of “being sectioned” during labor and delivery.   We dive into access (or lack there of) and how this impacts thousand of birth stories each year. Dr. Neel shares how birthing people in rural parts of our country will have different experiences than folks in the cities with better and more abundant access to healthcare. Dr. Neel says, “We know the right mortality rate is zero. We don't know know the right amount of c-sections..and it's not zero.” We go deep into cesarean sections being life saving surgery, but also balancing that with medical manipulation. He shares that asking question is a wonderful way to stay in control of your care. In a recent development, the US Preventive Services Task Force sounded the alarm about the increasing prevalence of hypertensive disorders among pregnant women. They have advised monitoring blood pressure throughout pregnancy since these disorders have doubled in the last three decades, impacting one in ten pregnancies. Unfortunately, the United States lags in maternal health, bearing a troublingly high maternal mortality rate compared to other countries. While the newly recommended guidelines are undeniably important, it is crucial to delve deeper into the root causes that contribute to this and the growing number of other chronic health problems showing up in pregnancy. On today's episode of On Health, I have the privilege of being joined once again by the remarkable Dr. Neel Shah, a forward-thinking OBGYN and the Chief Medical Officer of Maven Clinic. Together, we delve into the heart of the maternal health crisis, exploring its multifaceted origins, and discuss important new ways of thinking about critical problems. We examine the profound societal challenges that impact maternal health and emphasize the urgent need for and significance of personalized care and the promising role of emerging digital healthcare solutions in supporting pregnant individuals. Furthermore, we address the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the impact of forced isolation on maternal health. It is of utmost importance that we continue to raise awareness about maternal health and strive for comprehensive changes that prioritize the well-being of both mothers and babies in this country. By tackling the underlying factors that contribute to these challenges and ensuring access to meaningful care, we can achieve healthier outcomes for all, including the most vulnerable members of society. Dr. Neel and I discuss: COVID-19, lack of labor support, isolation, and other unforeseen obstacles for pregnant people Systemic racism and the impact of weathering on maternal mortality rates Dr. Neel's firsthand experience as a practicing OBGYN during the pandemic The dangers of generalizing and the importance of working directly with pregnant people on their individual needs A breakdown of what pregnant or aspiring pregnant people deserve from the healthcare system The goal of the Maven Clinic app and the potential of digital maternal care options Dr. Neel's perspective on the centering pregnancy model Why Dr. Neel feels that competence, reliability, and affirmation are required to move the needle in creating systemic change in maternal care Thank you so much for taking the time to tune in to your body, yourself, and this podcast! Welcome to “Securities” by Lux Capital, a podcast and newsletter devoted to science, technology, finance and the human condition. I'm your host, Danny Crichton, and today we're talking about the post-Roe world. Tomorrow, it'll be 30 days since the Supreme Court announced in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization that there is no constitutional basis for the right to abortion, overthrowing several decades of precedent. It's a decision with huge implications for tech startups, which will now operate across 50 sets of state laws, covering everything from privacy and data governance to who gets to decide which patients receive women's health and who won't. Now that we've had a few weeks to digest the decision, I asked my Lux partner Deena Shakir to bring together a panel of guests to talk more about how startups are responding to Dobbs. Guests: Dr. Neel Shah is an assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School and Chief Medical Officer of Maven Clinic. At the very end of our lives, we shouldn't be concerned about the financial well-being of those we're leaving behind. Unfortunately for many, that peace of mind is a luxury. Neel Shah of Beacon Wealth Solutions is on a mission to bring that financial peace to as many clients as possible through a complete planning approach. After graduating with a finance degree, Neel had to choose between the financial advisory path and law school. Ultimately, Neel chose law school and spent the next 20 years behind the wheel of corporate business and real estate transactions. After a while, Neel discovered his passion for the advisory side and began diving into trust and estate planning.  Although an improvement, Neel still felt he could dig deeper with clients, so he revisited his old background and began developing relationships with CPAs, financial advisors, and insurance agents - professionals who quickly became his primary referral source. It wasn't long before Neel's firm fully embraced the RIA model and Beacon Wealth Solutions was born. In this episode, Neel talks with Steve about executing that tough pivot, his unique outlook on clients, his role as a change agent, and the mindset shifts that transformed his career and his life. Key Takeaways [01:26] - About Beacon Wealth Solutions. [05:17] - How Neel built out and executed his joint-service model. [11:29] - How Neel shifted from retail to wholesale.  [14:27] - What surprised Neel about shifting to direct-to-consumer. [15:17] - Neel's biggest daily challenge.  [16:57] - How Neel gets clients to actually take action. [18:24] - The biggest value-add for advisors.  [21:12] - How Neel manages his time. [26:16] - The clients who most benefit from Neel's services. [27:47] - Where Neel's new clients come from.  [31:41] - What the discovery process looks like.  [32:19] - How Neel educates his clients.  [34:08] - The importance of asking questions. [35:10] - How to prioritize client goals. [37:19] - The future of Beacon Wealth Solutions. Quotes (14:55) “We fall in love with what we have and what we do. And we think that we're amazing at it. And clearly we should be amazing at it or else we shouldn't be doing it. But I think what I underestimated is our need to be change agents. We need to be agents of change. We need to educate people that there are better ways of doing this.” ~ Neel Shah (17:43) “The value that we bring is this EQ communication skill. And what I've learned more than ever is that that is probably the biggest value that I can bring to people. I think we kind of underestimate that because it might come naturally to us.” ~ Neel Shah (18:27) “I've fallen less in love with what I do but more in love with for whom I do it. And if I go in with that mindset, that love mindset, I feel like that's been one of the most impactful mindset shifts for me.” ~ Neel Shah (34:13) “The power is really just asking the right questions. If you can ask the right questions, you'll get everything that you need to know. And listen to their answers and then make sure that your follow-up questions relate to what they're talking about. Because they'll tell you exactly what's on their mind. And if you have a set agenda going into that meeting of things that you think you want to talk about, they're probably not listening to you anymore because you're not addressing what's on their mind.” ~ Neel Shah Links  Neel on LinkedIn Beacon Wealth Solutions Shah Total Planning Shah Total Planning on YouTube Shah & Associates Shah & Associates Blog Design. (1:02:08)Guest: Dr. Neel Shah, OB-GYN, Professor, Harvard Medical School. The United States is a scary place to give birth. The rate of maternal deaths in America is the highest among wealthy countries.
