Today on Too Opinionated, singer Zara Phillips comes back for another visit. Somebody's Daughter - and the 2018 book and 2022 one-woman show the film is based on – focusses on Zara's personal journey of overcoming early addiction, navigating her life and meeting her birth father after many years and struggles after connecting with her birth mother. The project's true driving force is tofacilitate honest, vulnerable conversations about adoption. Too many people, she says, are ignoring these important issues. In addition to acting and writing, Zara is also a talented singer and songwriter who launched her career in the 80s, appearing in music videos and providing backing vocals on tour with Bob Geldof, Matt Bianco, David Essex and Nick Kamen. While taking some years away from creative endeavors to raise a family, she came back strong in the 2000s, releasing two albums(When The Rain Stops and You. Me & Us) produced by Ted Perlman, whose multi-faceted musical resume includes Whitney Houston, Bob Dylan and Chicago; earning a Best Homegrown Documentary honor for her 2008 film Roots Unknown at the Garden State Film Festival; and publishing in 2008 her first book Mother Me, a compelling memoir about her ongoing struggles as an adoptee now raising a family of her own. A few years later, Zara's song “I'm Legit,” co-written with Darryl McDaniels (DMC of Run-DMC), was a successful single in the adoption world and beyond. In 2014, Zara's one woman show Beneath My Father's Sky, directed by Eliza and Eric Roberts won Best Direction at NYC's United Solo Festival and was performed in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Connecticut and London in 2016. During this era, she was presented with an Angel in Adoption Award by the Congressional Coalition of Adoption Institute. Her most recent album, released in 2020, is Meditation and Kitkats, and she currently tours and performs with her husband, British folk-rock legend Richard Thompson, who scored Somebody's Daughter. The Horn Signal is proudly brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. Join hosts John Snell and Preston Shepard as they interview horn players around the world. Today's episode features Robert Watt, former Assistant Principal Horn of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Robert Lee Watt was born in Neptune, New Jersey the 4th child of seven. His father, Edward Watt Jr. played trumpet professionally in a Jazz ensemble, “The New Jersey Squires of Rhythm.” When Robert was eight years old he got curious about his father's trumpet, kept high on a shelf. Too short to reach it, Robert conscripted his little brother Tony to help. But with Tony on his shoulders he lost his balance, causing both of them to fall to the floor, trumpet in hand. Robert then attempted to fix the dents in the instrument by using a hammer. The badly damaged trumpet was the way Robert's father discovered his interest in horns. After a serious reproach, Robert's father tried to teach him trumpet. However, it wasn't until years later that Robert discovered the instrument he really wanted to play. While helping his father clean out a room in the basement Robert discovered some old 78 recordings. The curious Robert gave the old recordings a spin. It was the “William Tell Overture” on hearing the French horns on that recording he asked his father what instrument came in after the trumpet. His father informed him that it was a “French horn” “A middle instrument that never gets to play the melody like the trumpet…why, do you like that horn?” His father asked. Robert replied, “It gives me chills when I hear it, I love it. That's what I want to play.” His father informed the young Robert that it really wasn't the instrument for him. Explaining that it was an instrument for thin-lipped white boys. “Your lips are too thick to play that small, thin, mouthpiece. You'd be better suited for the trumpet like you father.” Upon reaching high school Robert seriously pursued the French horn. Approaching the band director of his high school in Asbury Park, Robert was again told that his lips were too thick to play the French horn. After being persistent, the band director gave Robert an old French horn that barely worked. Nevertheless, Robert advanced quickly and was soon winning auditions for honor bands and orchestras throughout the state of New Jersey, bringing great honor to his high school. After high school Robert was accepted to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where he majored in music and studied French horn with Harry Shapiro of the Boston Symphony. Mr. Shapiro took great interest in Robert pushing him hard. At the end of his first year Mr. Watt was asked to perform the Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1, with the Boston Pops Orchestra under Arthur Fiedler. The following summer he received a fellowship to the Berkshire Music Festival at Tanglewood. Returning to the Conservatory for his third year Mr. Watt was informed by the president's office that the Conservatory had financial problems and that all scholarships would be canceled for the coming year. At the end of his junior year at the Conservatory Mr. Watt was informed by his French horn teacher that it was time for him to audition for a position in a major symphony orchestra. On the advice of his teacher, Mr. Watt chose Los Angeles and Chicago. When Mr. Watt returned from his audition journey, he had made the finals at both auditions. Two months later The Los Angeles Philharmonic offered him the position of Assistant First Horn. Making him the first African American French horn player hired by a major symphony orchestra in the United States. Mr. Watt joined the ranks of only a handful of African Americans playing in symphony orchestras in these United States. According to the American Symphony Orchestra League, that represented less than 2% of the total, out of twenty-six top orchestras. Mr. Watt held his position until 2007, a career spanning 37 years. Mr. Watt performed several times as soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta and several orchestras in the Los Angeles area as well as the Oakland Symphony performing the Richard Strauss Second Horn Concerto While a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Mr. Watt has performed with principal and guest conductors that included: Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, Eric Leinsdrof, Carla Maria Giulini, Pierre Boulez, Zubin Mehta, Henry Lewis, James De Priest, Michael Tilson Thomas, Herbert Blumstedt, Andre Previn, Marin Alsop, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Christoph Von Dohnányi. Included among the many world renown artists he has performed with were: Yo-Yo Ma, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, Wynton Marsalias, Henry Mancini, Gladys Night, Isaac Hayes, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Barry White, Rihanna, Paula Abdul, Herbie Hancock, Lalo Schifrin, The Carpenters, Benny Carter, Quincy Jones, Bon Jovi, Elton John and film composer, John Williams. He has played on film scores of: Spiderman II, Rush Hour, Mission Impossible, Spike Lee's “Miracle at St. Anna, Golf and many others. Mr. Watt has played the music for the Twentieth Century Fox cartoons, The Simpsons, American Dad, Family Guy and King of the Hill for the past three years. He played on the five hour TV special “The Jacksons, an American Family” under Harold Wheeler, and played for several years for the TV program “Startrek Voyager.” In the late 80's Mr. Watt helped organize an African American Brass Quintet, “The New Brass Ensemble” which performed throughout the United States and abroad. Mr. Watt has done public speaking lecturing on music and African history in the Los Angeles area. He was hired as guest professor at Los Angele City College teaching the course, “Music of Black Americans”. Recently Mr. Watt executive produced a short film in memory of his friend Miles Davis. The film is based on the musical composition “Missing Miles” by Todd Cochran, commissioned by Mr. Watt, for French horn and piano. The short film was chosen by the Pan African Film Festival and the Garden State Film Festival. Mr. Watt is a licensed airplane pilot with an instrument rating. He is a saber fencer and he speaks German and Italian.

Spring has sprung, and so has a new season for the AFB Possibilities Podcast. As we kick-off this season, we'll be focusing in on AFB's Award winning documentary film Possibilities, which presents an authentic portrayal of life today for people who are blind, deafblind, or have low vision. The film was awarded this past weekend the Broader Vision Documentary Award at the Garden State Film Festival, and we're excited to share with you one of the featured voices in the film, New Jersey's own Krystal Allen. Today on the show we have Jim Mercurio. Jim is a filmmaker, writer, and author whose screenwriting instruction has inspired tens of thousands of writers around the world. Creative Screenwriting ranked him as one of the country's top story analysts:“The best example of how an analyst can give concrete help without veering off the track of your story... He adapts to each writer and script.Jim is a true champion for undiscovered writers and filmmakers. He produced Hard Scrambled which, like the horror-thriller he directed Last Girl, was discovered in a contest. The film stars Kurtwood Smith (That 70's Show) and indie stalwart Richard Edson. ARI ROSSEN is an actor, award-winning filmmaker and musician with roots in Detroit and the SF South Bay. After several years in New York, I just moved back to my home state of California and am excited to expand my creative community here. https://www.instagram.com/instarossen/ Ari co-produced and played Beelzebub in the film noir LOST + FOUND, written by Laura Sweeney and directed by Jeremiah Kipp. LOST + FOUND secured distribution with PBS and IFTNetwork and has screened at Garden State Film Festival, NYWIFT and other great festivals. His queer dark comedy series BEHIND THE CEREAL is all about the rise, fall and occasional redemption of America's breakfast cereal mascots (Colonel Munch, Fortune The Fairy, Count Cacao and more). BEHIND THE CEREAL was selected for FilmShop's 2021 Breakthrough Pitchfest, which included panelists from WarnerMedia and indie crowdfunding platform Seed & Spark. Ari is also playing himself in the upcoming narrative documentary feature ALL THE LONELY PEOPLE from Emmy Award-winning production company The Clowder Group. This timely film explores the epidemic of loneliness faced by a handful of global citizens, and how they are seeking solutions toward authentic social connection. During what he half-jokingly calls “The Covid Era,” Ari has channeling his own social isolation with music videos and ridiculous covers, including “Vaccine” (Dir. Laura Sweeney, a queer homage to Dolly Parton's iconic “Jolene”) and “Significant Otter,” an original song about a sea otter seeking love in an ocean of possibilities. Ari holds a BS in Theatre and Musical Theatre Concentration from Northwestern University. When not creating, Ari enjoys the great outdoors and attempts to provide an adequate kingdom for his feline overlord, Batman. He's a proud member of FilmShop, SAG-AFTRA and AEA. Frank Vincent is an acclaimed actor, musician, comedian, author and producer. He was born in North Adams, Massachusetts of first generation Italian-Americans and raised in the Greenville section of Jersey City, New Jersey. Frank's father, an amateur actor, introduced him to show business at an early age. Frank acted in school plays and studied music at St. Paul's grammar school. He played piano, trumpet and drums, but his love for the drums soon took center stage. Frank spent his adolescence playing and traveling with various national championship drum and bugle corps. This passion evolved into playing in small combos at various nightclubs. He then met record producer Bill Ramal who became his musical mentor. In time, he became a successful recording drummer for such prominent names as Don Costa, Paul Anka, Del Shannon, Trini Lopez and the Belmonts. He found himself playing 5-6 nights a week and recording 3-4 days a week. His insatiable desire for performing soon came to the forefront and his drum playing became secondary. At this pace, he developed a stage personality and learned the meaning of comedic timing and discipline, which would soon lend itself to his acting career. In 1975, Frank made his feature film acting debut in Ralph DeVito's "Death Collector". Martin Scorsese saw his work and cast him in the 1980 Academy Award-nominated film of the decade, "Raging Bull"... From that point until the present day, Frank has appeared in numerous television shows, music videos and over fifty feature films. Frank has demonstrated the ultimate degree of versatility as an actor from his Raging Bull's arrogant "Salvi", to his Do The Right Thing's soaking wet "Charlie", Jungle Fevers racist "Mike Tucci", Casino's suave "Frankie Marino" and his "Go home and get your shine box" Goodfella "Billy Batts"... Frank has worked with some of the greatest directors of our time, notably Martin Scorsese, Brian De Palma, Spike Lee, John Sayles, Andrew Bergman and Sydney Lumet... He has acted with such greats as Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Richard Dreyfuss, Anthony Quinn, Sharon Stone, Adrien Brody and Sylvester Stallone, among others... His voice is featured in the multi-million dollar PlayStation game series Grand Theft Auto as "Don Salvatore Leone" as well as in DreamWorks' hit animated film "Shark Tale"... Frank is also the spokesperson for "Permanent TSB," one of the largest banks in Ireland... In addition, his career has taken him from recording with great musical legends to working on music videos with such names as Bruce Hornsby, Hype Williams, Nas, DMX, Method Man and T-Boz. Most recently, Frank starred as feared New York mob boss "Phil Leotardo" on HBO's epic series The Sopranos. Leotardo's simmering vendetta with "Tony Soprano" brought exhilarating excitement to millions of viewers week-after-week... Frank also penned a top-selling book entitled, "A Guy's Guide to Being A Man's Man," which was published by Penguin Putnam. GQ Magazine said, "It's awesome!"... Frank also recently starred as the lead in the upcoming movie, "Chicago Overcoat". Fans are sure to be pleased with Frank's riveting performance as an aging hit man who comes back for one last score. Over the years, Frank has received many awards for his various achievements on and off the screen. In 2002, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Back East Picture Show at the Hoboken Film Festival. That same year he received the Italian-American Entertainer of the Year Award presented by the Italian Tribune. In 2005, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Garden State Film Festival. In 2006, Frank received the Honorary Branford Fellow from Branford College, Yale University. That same year he received a Best Supporting Actor Award for the film "Remedy" at the International Film and Screenplay Festival. Frank was a cast member when The Sopranos received the Emmy Award in 2007. In 2008, Frank received the coveted SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for The Sopranos. ACTOR - This week our focus is on career advice from the perspective of the beginning actor. Our guest today is Jamian J. Blackmon. Jamian is a talented new actor whom I recently discovered from his YouTube video. In watching his demo reel, I felt he had a great amount of natural talent. I think that with his continued training, there is no doubt he could go on to become a superb actor known to us all. Jamian began his acting career pursuit in 2005. His first job was as a background actor on "Bring It On 4: In it to Win it." In 2008, he was cast in his first lead role in the film "Up In The Attic." In 2010, he was cast in "The Yard," directed by Nathan Zen-Sapien that was featured in the 2011 Garden State Film Festival. In 2011, he was cast in "Booley" directed by Christain Grillo which was signed to a distribution deal in the UK. In 2012, Jamian was cast in the film "Deer Crossing," that was distributed throughout the country being sold at different Red Box and Blockbuster locations. Jamian made the big move to California at the end of 2012 and landed a role in entitled "Color Blind," which is currently still in production. Jamian continues to attend acting and casting director classes. He is so honored to have been taught by celebrity acting coach, Tracey Moore. INTERVIEW QUESTIONS INCLUDE: As a fairly new actor in Hollywood, what do you find to be your greatest challenge? What do you find harder to do out here, career-wise, than on the East coast? What types of jobs do you recommend to supplement your income? What are some things a person should know before they move to Hollywood? What three characteristic traits do you feel are mandatory to become a successful actor? What are some tips on how to handle your nerves before an audition?
