Send us a textIt was a real pleasure to have Motoring Journalist, TV and You Tuber Jonny Smith join us for a full fat chat about cars of yesteryear. His story starts with a couple of British classics. A Harvest Gold Austin Allegro belonging to his Grandparents, and a Hillman Avenger that his parents owned from 1979 to the late nineties, perhaps even beyond the millennium! We take in an Austin Maxi with a ‘drink driver facelift' which his Dad repaired overnight with piano wire, ready for work the next day. There's a Vauxhall Carlton, an honourable mention for the Mk2 Vauxhall Cavalier Estate (apparently built in Australia by Holden). We also speak about a white Austin Rover Montego estate, why used car dealers have bunting, and more puzzlingly always leave the boot of a car open, when on display. We finish things up with a chat about gifting books to schools, and incentivising car manufacturers painting their cars bright colours rather than ‘soviet grey' or appliance white. It goes without saying we recommend you take a listen to the wonderful Smith and Sniff Podcast, and check out The Late Brake Show on You Tube. https://smithandsniff.com/https://www.youtube.com/@TheLateBrakeShowSupport the showWe'd love you to hear and share your stories, please tag and follow us on social media. www.instagram.com/mydadscar_podcastwww.Facebook.com/mydadscar podcastwww.buymeacoffee.com/mydadscarIf you'd like to support the podcast and are able to, you can ‘buy us a coffee' which will help towards costs of hosting and purchasing equipment to allow us to record guests in person, rather than just on zoom. Send us a textWe're joined by Faye Hatton, an Automotive PR specialist who just so happened to answer a social media post by Jonny Smith with a memory of her parents cars.Naturally, we hijacked that post and got in touch, and shortly afterward had this chat. Faye's earliest memories are of the cars she used to walk past on her way to and from school. Not a long walk, 300 yards, as she lives next door! But she would test herself on recognising headlamps and badges from a distance. The first car she recalls her parents driving was a silver Sierra hatchback. They never had ‘posh' cars when she was growing up, and unusually due her Dads working schedule, most journeys were made with her Mum at the wheel. Jon and Andy are joined by Takona founder Lewis Warren to discover what got him into cars... Fortunately for us, the blame lies very firmly at his Father's door, and there's a string of decent cars indicating why. However, it wasn't a car thing for his Dad really, after the 205 GTI and the Toyota Celica, cars became an accessory for work. The Audi TT was the sportiest car available on the company car scheme, and as a Financial Advisor, the vehicles became an identity, and a way to demonstrate knowledge in investment, rather than a hobby. There are some great tales, including a roadtrip to Spain in the TT with his brother, with just a Country and Western CD for entertainment... There might be a bit of travel sickness too! Takona, as Lewis explains is a clothing brand aimed at getting car enthusiasts talking, and talking about their mental health. We'd love you to look him up www.takona.co.uk or check out the Takona Tlks podcast with a string of great guests, including recently, Jonny Smith and Richard Porter aka Smith and Sniff. This week the team (minus Betty who is on other sporting duties) head to an industrial estate in east London for a day of karting. However, a lot of the other teams have taken the event far too seriously and are wearing their own kit and have enrolled professional drivers. With Team Principal Greg also out of action after putting his back out, it's a big day for Christian to prove himself on the track. They're joined by a reserve driver who also loves talking about cars for a living on what he calls “the broadest church of automotive appreciation”, from finding classic cars in barns to the future of motoring; Jonny Smith from The Late Brake Show (aka The Car Pervert). With an actual F1 race this weekend there's also time to preview the Qatar Grand Prix, discuss the probability of a new team joining the grid and answer listener questions about the origins of Formula One and Red Bull's human barriers. As always, we want you to be part of the show, too. There's not many people who can say that the car that brought them home from hospital as a newborn baby, is the car they subsequently learnt to drive in! Then again, there's also not many people who need a spreadsheet to calculate how many cars they've owned and have restoration projects that have spanned 18 years! Welcome to the unique world of presenter, journalist and automotive expert Jonny Smith. It's shame that Jason and Dave needed to wrap up this episode when Jonny needed to take his kids swimming, as I suspect the three of them could have happily chatted for days! It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. IONIQ5 YOUTUBE REVIEWS ARE OUT The embargo lifted early this morning for reviews of the new Hyundai IONIQ 5, so let's have a look at the highlights and takeaways from around the web: Fully Charged - the most gorgeous car i've seen this year. Doesn't look like the crossovers everyone else is making. Acceleration was nice but not staggering. The adapter to plug in your domestic plug lives under teh floor in the boot. He loved the regen paddles behind the wheel, the cliky buttons, the style of the interior is like driving an Apple Store. And he has a fight with the motorizes charging flap. Jonny Smith - likes the 3 metres wheelbase, more than a Range Rover. Loves the flat floor, no rear wiper because the aero pushes the water off, 800v, the augmented HUD, said he's strugling to find fault with it. The 155mph top speed not a problem. Worth watching just to see what he powers from the car. WhatCar? - likes the twin screens, the charge to 80% in 18 minutes, their version of Nissan's e-Pedal is the i-Pedal. nextmove - loves the pixel lights, self-presentign door handles, he showed the internal plug socket which the UK ones didn't, he showed off the key which had buttons for forward and back. aka Tesla Summon. But he charges it on IONITY, charging at 223kW at 50%! HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 THRASHES COMPETITORS AT CHARGING "Unlike the previous artificial example, this time we can take a look at charging results of Hyundai Ioniq 5 from 10% to 80% State of Charge (SOC) in South Korea on April 20, 2021, at an outside temperature of 19°C and the battery temperature of 15°C (initial, we guess)." says InsideEVs: "The charging curve is quite complex, with multiple sharp increases and decreases along the way. It starts at about 115 kW at 10% SOC, at 14-15% SOC it increases to about 187 kW, and then again to 220 kW at 29-30% SOC. The peak range is quite wide: between 30 to 51%. The peak value of more than 225 kW appears to be reached around 51% SOC, but then power quickly decreases (maybe due to too high temperature of the battery cells) to "just" 120 kW at 52-54%. Once the temperature stabilizes (we guess), the charging power increased once again to 170 kW. By 79-80% it decreases to around 130 kW." https://insideevs.com/news/503522/hyundai-ioniq5-fast-charging-analysis/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles RIMAC SHOWS OFF C_TWO HYPERCAR ACCELERATION They say it will be the fastest accelerating production car in the world. They did 10 launches, going from 80% to 60% over those runs. "The fully homologated road-going prototype was put to the test in quarter-mile runs and managed to complete the task in 8.95 seconds at 156.1 mph (251.2 km/h) after doing 0-60 mph in 2.42 seconds in the very first outing with the tires still cold. Following several trial runs, the first proper quarter-mile sprint took only 8.94 seconds at 155.1 mph (249.7 km/h)." writes Motor1.com: "When a company's CEO says a 0 to 60 mph run in 2.33 seconds is "quite bad," you know that car is going to be an absolute rocket. After all, Rimac has previously said the production model will do the job in 1.85 seconds on its way to a top speed of 258 mph (412 km/h) thanks to a whopping 1,914 horsepower (1,408 kilowatts) and 1,696 pound-feet (2,300 Newton-meters) of torque." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXe4X3rYIPw TESLA EARNINGS CALL PREVIEW. Most people are not aware that a Meyers Manx – an off-road dune buggy based on the iconic VW Beetle – won the inaugural NORRA Mexican 1000 back in 1967. And now, it’s the VW ID. 4’s turn to prove its merits in the harsh Mexican terrain." reports SlashGear: " It starts with a stock 2021 VW ID.4 1st Edition model with a single rear-mounted 201-horsepower electric motor and an 82 kWh battery pack. Next, the wizards at Rhys Millen Racing gave it a set of rally-style coilover struts, tubular lower front control arms, and boxed lower rear links. With the mods in place, the VW Id.4 sits two inches higher off the ground than stock. Rhys Millen Racing relocated the radiator several inches higher to improve both the vehicle’s cooling capacity and approach angle. Formartine United striker Jonny Smith talks to Sean McAngus about his title success with Cove, rising quality of the Highland League, his business venture, hunger for more success and much more.
Sit down with Jack and Joe as they speak with the one and only Jonny Smith to talk music, inspiration, how bad Nickelback is, self doubt, and much much more. Jonny is a very good friend of the podcast and is a major inspiration for myself (Jack). I hope you all enjoy our conversation. The original plans were to have musical accompaniment by Jonny, but circumstances arose where it was not possible so, sometime in the future you should be expecting a mini episode with some fun insight into Jonny's process! Enjoy, and we love you! Special thanks as always to @erock95_ of @spacestationrecordings for being the most helpful human alive.
The Fast & Furious marathon concludes as Chris and Marty take on the biggest and silliest movies of the Fast franchise so far, Furious 7 and Fate of the Furious, where cars jump through buildings, baddies hack into nuclear submarines and none of this matters because Kurt Russell! In other news, Porsche's excellent Road to Le Mans series continues and we get excited by A Massive Hunt. Michael Fassbender's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rod98otDJ9E&list=PLKduzfEGbn-FJLzSrthYkpHD9a8vXt4A4 (Road to Le Mans) continues, and we think it's one of the best documentary series we've seen this year. Also Pistonhead's Sam Sheehan has done a great video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaCH1EHcIzQ (driving the 991 RSR GTE). We already covered Bad Obsession Motorsport's series racing a C1, but the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIxRI4Weh2Y (end of season review) has a great ending, and is recommended. We've had the first trailer for The Grand Tour's special https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZmoFfYCzKw (A Massive Hunt), which looks ace. Also a new series called https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBpl9yEKd0Healg3VKMaUxeg-dcuikWpi (Sorted) has started, which could be great but has a fairly major flaw. Chris Harris has had a busy month for content. First doing a very revealing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7lD0PQBvg4 (2 part) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2zWdIlIX4Y (interview) with Jonny Smith on https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCf2rpBEOs5jglV2YxmKD8hw (The Late Brake Show). Then a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtgymHfB9CQ (good discussion) with https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrujKGZ0YHwxMhN2-OwleRQ (Remove Before Race) talking about the influencer approach and where AMG is going wrong. He's also started doing longer form interviews on the Top Gear YouTube channel, the best of which so far is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaE57tChPQM (Chris Harris talks EVs with Graeme Cooper from the National Grid). For the last part of the current Fast and Furious marathon, Chris talks https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2820852/ (Fast and Furious 7) while Marty rounds out the series with https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4630562/ (The Fate of the Furious). Thank God we're done, let's move on. In this episode's 'What has Henry Catchpole been up to this week?', The gloriously bonkers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8WmCDH_nWw (Nomad R) gets an outing in the hills and beautifully moody introduction. Chris's YouTube pick this week is not Carfection's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmsgApUeyEc (The Greatest F1 Cars Ever - All In One AMAZING Place: Williams Heritage) (Yes, he's cheating again), but instead Chris Harris doing what he does so well on YouTube which is making content for us. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQv-St8GDOs (Chris Harris Let Loose on Audience Cars). For his channel pick... He's also cheated. We've talked about Tavarish's channel before, but he did a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1g2ljcLltgI&list=PLrvMJaD0-PufLw5XBhSl0Ss6qfs4uhKkb (project rebuilding one of the Fate of the Furious's hero cars. An orange Lamborghini Murcielago). Martin picked up on Top Gear's new series call https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPIyvcRz3HM (Stig Drifts), where gratuitous drifting shots meet a video game aesthetic. The channel pick is the brilliant land speed record channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxV6MOfNBWfZjR3M60kaylQ (Scarf & Goggles). Well worth a look! Jonny Smith of The Late Brake Show on YouTube has done quite a bit in his automotive career. From co-hosting the UK automotive program Fifth Gear, to Mud Sweat and Gears on BBC America, to writing for such publications as Car Magazine and Classic Car, Jonny has seemingly done it all. As an enthusiast of electric vehicles, Jonny also built and held the record for the worlds quickest electric car in a highly modified 1974 Enfield E8000 that was dubbed “Jonny’s Flux Capacitor”. But make no mistake, this man doesn’t live on electricity alone, as a wickedly cool 1968 Dodge Charger complete with a 383 cubic inch big-block and 4-speed also resides in his garage. On this week’s Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ, we pull an obscure 1987 Owosso Pulse Litestar from our classifieds and then talk to Jonny about his career, his new show and the future of automobiles.
The Fast & Furious marathon continues as Chris and Marty dig into Fast Five and Fast 6, where the vehicular mayhem takes on a whole different level of crazy and Vin Diesel's voice disappears into the realms of sub-bass and frequencies only whales can hear. The nominations for the https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKduzfEGbn-FJLzSrthYkpHD9a8vXt4A4 (Motor Film Awards 2020) are up, and it's well worth taking a look at their show reel! Michael Fassbender's racing journey continuing in https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKduzfEGbn-FJLzSrthYkpHD9a8vXt4A4 (season 2 of Porsche's excellent Road to Le Mans) series as he enters the ELMS. The Fast and Furious marathon continues; Chris watches https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1596343/ (Fast 5) while Marty goes flipping mad with https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1905041/ (Fast and Furious 6). In this episode's 'What has Henry Catchpole been up to this week?', he's been doing another awesome film, this time going back to the 80s with the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EEnIw45D24 (Lamborghini Diablo SV). Chris' YouTube pick this week is a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcxToJR-voI (330 HP / 1000 KG Mk 2 Ford Fiesta)! For a channel pick, Jonny Smith's excellent work continues as he launches https://www.youtube.com/c/TheLateBrakeShow (The Late Brake Show). Marty chose Kimi Raikkonen's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlD9lbWF5WQ (supremely chilled out Nurburgring lap), and then went Down Under for the https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgJRL30YS6XFxq9Ga8W2J3A (Mighty Car Mods channel)! KATE WALTON ELLIOT is a really cool awesome person. You may have seen her on Transport Evolved, or at least you've DEFINITELY seen an episode she's been a part of. She hails from Britain, where Susie Dent will haunt you if you end a sentence in a preposition like we just did. and she made the journey to America about a decade ago. You know Jonny Smith, formerly of the CarPervert of the Fully Charged, and of the Fifth Gear, who changed the name of his show to a really lame name of the LateBrakeShow? Remember his little tiny car that he snagged up the land speed record for? KATE SOLD HIM THAT CAR. Kate ALSO has several of her own fully functioning conversion projects - the Morris is our favorite, because if we close our eyes, we can pretend that it's the only Morris thing in the world, and forget that Morris Dancing ever existed at all. Ah, that ones a knee-slapper. Like they slap their kneeeees in... ohmygod, make it stop. WHEN SHE ISN'T WORKING ON EV'S, SHE's SAVING LIVES IN AS A NURSE. But we barely talked about that, because lame - who wants to hear more about Covid? Ugh. SummaryOn this episode of The Most Accurate Podcast, Holden Kushner joins Greg to recap Week 14 and work the Week 15 waiver wire en route to glory in the 2019 fantasy football playoffs. Their booms of the week kick things off. Holden laments the loss of Calvin Ridley while celebrating the ascension of Ian Thomas, and Greg wonders if he can run back Joe Mixon against New England next week. Ryan Tannehill also went boom, but he did so from Greg's bench. Was the benching process sound, though? Greg argues that touchdown regression could still be on the table for Tannehill going forward. Busts of the week come next, featuring Jack Doyle and Brandin Cooks, but also with hat tips to the inactive Josh Jacobs and the laundry list of players who ended up injured on Sunday. The second half of the show is a breakdown of the Week 15 waiver wire. Should Raheem Mostert or DeAndre Washington be the top priority at running back? Are Adrian Peterson, Chris Thompson, and Patrick Laird even worth additions considering their poor offensive situations? Why aren't Zach Pascal and A.J. Brown already owned in more leagues? Did Week 14's injuries to Mike Evans and DeVante Parker create more opportunity at wide receiver in Tampa or Miami? Speaking of the Bucs, is O.J. Howard finally back on the fantasy radar? Can Case Keenum salvage Terry McLaurin's value? Who are the top streaming options at quarterback and defense? What other lingering questions and difficult decisions will keep Greg and Holden up at night as Week 15 approaches? It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. Welcome to new Patreon PRODUCER it’s ANTHONY CARROLL from Seattle, and thank you CHARLES HALL for increasing your support. More on the Tesla news from Tom Randall at Bloomberg: "The top-line performance Model 3 price declined to $58,000 from $60,900. That’s $20,000 cheaper than when it was first released last year. It’s also a bit quicker, going from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds and having a top speed of 162 mph. Musk told reporters that making these final price cuts has been “excruciating,” and there will be no future price reductions to the Model 3. He declined to answer a question about the base model’s profitability. Tesla also reintroduced a lower-priced Model S sedan, which now starts at $79,000 with 270 miles of range. There’s also a long-range version starting at $83,000 with a 335-mile range, and a performance version starting at $99,000." NISSAN REVEALS U.S. PRICING FOR LEAF E-PLUS: COSTS MORE THAN MODEL 3 "Nissan has just revealed U.S. pricing for the 62-kWh version of the LEAF. Unfortunately, pricing seems a bit too high following yesterday’s $35,000 Tesla Model 3 announcement." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs: "There’s a lot to like with this new LEAF. Its 62-kWh battery provides a range of up to 226 miles. Had it not been for Tesla shocking the world last night with the Model 3 base price announcement, we’d be rather excited for the LEAF. However, all versions of the LEAF e-Plus check in at a higher price than $35,000. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) for the 2019 Nissan LEAF PLUS are: LEAF S PLUS $36,550 USD, LEAF SV PLUS $38,510 USD, LEAF SL PLUS $42,550 USD" Inside EVs Forum user Bloggin: "$35k gets you the standard Model 3, but who wants a Tesla without Autopilot?? Add the $3k and it’s $38k. Want a color other than black and now it’s $39,500. Want wheels other than black, now it’s $41k and well equipped and still below the Leaf SL at $42,550." And user Brian: "Leaf still qualifies for the full tax credit whereas Tesla only gets half. In four more months, Tesla will only get a fourth of the credit. By the time the Leaf loses the credit, Nissan will have put cash on the hood. In addition four new plug-in hybrid models will also make their debuts, and the world of Formula E racing will be represented by the latest Audi e-tron FE05 racing car. Deliveries of the Audi e-tron, the first member of this new quartet of electric vehicles, are set to begin soon. The series-production version of its coupé equivalent, the Audi e-tron Sportback, will be introduced later in 2019. Another electric car – the Audi Q2 L e-tron - will be presented in a few weeks in China and will reach its first customers in that market in 2019. Two further series-production debuts will then follow in 2020: the Audi e-tron GT and Audi Q4 e-tron. Concept cars on the stand in Geneva provide a look at these two future models." https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/audi-stand-at-geneva-will-be-exclusively-20190228 SEAT SHOWS VW MEB-BASED EL-BORN EV IN GENEVA "We've already seen spy photos of the production version of Volkswagen's new Golf-sized fully electric car, alternatively referred to as the I.D. or the Neo. As an intent to show that the MEB platform underpinning the Volkswagen will be utilized on other Volkswagen group cars, Seat, the Spanish carmaker, has released images of its own take on the MEB architecture." reports Autoblog: "Volkswagen will bring the I.D. electric hatchback to market first, instead of using Seat to test the waters. But the Seat is hardly a second banana, as its figures are convincing enough: the 62-kWh battery pack gives it a range of 260 miles (on the WLTP cycle), and its 204-horsepower electric powertrain takes it to 62 mph in 7.5 seconds. With 100-kW DC charging, the battery reaches 80-percent capacity in 47 minutes. The VW version's production is slated to begin in November 2019." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/01/seat-el-born-ev-vw-meb-geneva/#slide-7533531 JAGUAR I-PACE NAMED UK CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD 2019 The Jaguar I-PACE has emerged victorious at the UK Car of the Year Awards 2019, after a closely fought battle with three other manufacturers. Having been named the Best Executive car when the category winners were announced in February, the Jaguar was pitted against the 11 other triumphant new cars to fight it out for the top honour. The UK Car of the Year Awards judges were quick to praise the attributes of Jaguar’s first electric vehicle. TV presenter Jonny Smith said: “Few traditional manufacturers can match the I-PACE for ground-up groundbreaking design and tech. A wonderful combo of unique design, spirited driving behaviour and useful EV range/rapid charge capability.” WHY HONDA BOSSES WEREN'T CONVINCED ABOUT THE E PROTOTYPE "The project manager of the Honda e prototype has admitted that the development team had to overcome opposition from company management before the car was confirmed for production." says Autocar: "The retro-styled electric-powered machine, whose styling closely resembles that of the Urban EV prototype, is a compact city car with a range of around 125 miles. Kohei Hitomi said Honda management was not initially convinced by the car's styling, small size and limited range. " He said: "“The positive feedback for the Urban EV concept car was certainly a breakthrough to convince internally that a small-size EV would make sense and be appreciated. I also tried to convince people that an EV is meant to be used in urban conditions, [where] the [small] size of the car is the most important aspect. That's where it makes most sense. From that perspective, the small size is the most important aspect, so that was how we tried to convince people. The concept helped the production car to get approval, and the production car helped the concept to look like what it looked like." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/why-honda-bosses-werent-convinced-about-e-prototype KIA TO DISPLAY UPGRADED HYBRID NIRO MODELS AT GENEVA MOTOR SHOW "Kia has announced that refreshed versions of the Niro Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid will be make their public debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Both models now come with an exterior design in-line with the all-electric e-Niro, an improved interior finish and new tech features." says Jack Healy for CarKeys: "The South Korean marque has given the Niro hybrid models new front and rear bumpers, redesigned headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED rear lights and new alloy wheel options. Inside, Kia has made significant tech upgrades in the form of the optional 10.25-inch widescreen touchscreen and seven-inch instrument cluster display, which can be fitted instead of the standard eight-inch infotainment screen and 4.2-inch instrument panel. Both versions of the Niro use a 1.6-litre petrol engine that is teamed with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Hybrid pairs the combustion engine with a 1.56kWh lithium-ion battery pack, while the PHEV comes with an 8.9kWh unit." https://www.carkeys.co.uk/news/kia-to-display-upgraded-hybrid-niro-models-at-geneva-motor-show COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Hello and welcome to the Monday 18th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. A TALE OF TWO HYBRIDS This weekend marked a lot of TV watching for me - the 24 hours of Le Mans. I know, dirty noisy polluting but if there was an electric version of the series of course I'd watch it instead. But well done to Toyota and the number 8 car of Fernando Alonso who won. And well done to Toyota for winning with a hybrid. There's 500hp from the combustion engine but 500hp from the electric powertrain, which gives it 4 wheel drive too, using a High-powered lithium-ion battery The second Hybrid I’ve been watching Fully Charged, and Jonny Smith goes for a smooth ride in a Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. There is so much tech in the Porsche, but we're interested in the 14.1kWh battery. 4 hours to charge on a 3.6kW and 2.4hours on a 7.2kW charger. It is unashamedly a big nasty petrol car which is all about speed and noise but i love that Fully Charged featured it. Because hybrids will be a stepping stone for so many buyers. But as you can drive on EV power alone it won't be long before owners will want a full BEV. ARE TESLA USING A TENT? DOES IT MATTER? After reporting the new yesterday that Tesla have built a third general assembly Model 3 line in just three weeks, as Elon tweeted around the time i record the show, after that a lot of comment surfaced online about WHERE the line was built. Namely - a tent. Not just any tent, this is a luxury tent. But this is California, you don't have to account for the 6 inches of snow we had here a couple of months ago. In particular this year has seen, at least to my eyes, more pure hatred for Tesla and Elon than I've ever seen. It seems you can't be an impartial observer, you've either drunk the koolaid or you want to see Tesla go bust and for their cars to all burn in hell. Of course the truth is they make great cars and yes, they'll make mistakes along the way which we need to hold them accountable for in the right way. EVEN TRUMP FANS CAN'T IGNORE EVS There was a great article over the weekend about EVs and politics on ThinkProgress. The problem is the typical people who feel like they SHOULD turning their noses up at the liberal, snowflakes who are buying electric cars, are really annoyed they're cheaper to run. And also that you can charge them from your solar panels, which is the ultimate sign of sticking it to the big government who want to keep you under the control of big power companies. "the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) reported that it is much cheaper to drive an electric car any distance than it is to drive a comparable car fuelled by gasoline. The DOE says “The average fuel cost savings for all states was 60%.” But, in reality, the savings are going to be much, much larger — probably 80 percent or more. As solar gets even cheaper — and penetrates more of the market — many places will end up with a lot of excess low-cost carbon-free power during the day." So whatever your politics, whether it's on the left or right, the socialists who care for each other and the environment, or the capitalists who want the best deal, it doesn't need to be politicised. EVs make sense for everyone. CHEAPEST EV GETS A RANGE BUMP The Worlds cheapest EV is considered to the be Chinese SAIC Baojun E100, which would cost the equivalent of $7,300 if you could buy it in the US, after subsidies. But alas it's for Chinese buyers only. Now Baojun E100 on a single charge can drive up to 200 kilometers – about 50 miles more than before. The new figure compares with the reserve of electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric and BMW i3. But then again it's for two doors, a top speed of 62mph and a 40hp motor. SHENZHEN EMBRACES ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Shenzhen, once known for spewing out dark clouds of toxic smoke, has done much to clean up and transformed into China’s most sustainable city, according to several research reports. In less than a decade, Shenzhen has reduced its average air pollution by around 50 per cent, according to city authorities." According to a report on SCMP.com "Shenzhen has made global headlines for being the first major city in the world to roll out an all-electric public bus fleet. In 2009, it was chosen as one of 13 Chinese cities to pilot a national new-energy vehicle programme. Today, the city has three times more electric buses than the entire fleet of all buses in New York, and nearly eight times the total of Los Angeles. Lau says the e-bus fleet is not just good for air quality, it represents the city being at the forefront of green novelty." They continue: "The city’s electric taxi fleet is substantial as well. Standing by a crossing in central Shenzhen, one would estimate that more than half of all taxis were e-cars from BYD, the Shenzhen-based battery and electric vehicle maker in which American tycoon Warren Buffett is an investor. The city’s transport commission said in December that 62.5 per cent of all taxis in the city were electric, with the goal to turn the fleet all-electric. All existing gas cars in the taxi fleet are on target to be replaced by EV's by 2020." And what can we learn from this? "Out of the world’s estimated 385,000 electric buses, 90 per cent are in China. Every five weeks, 9,500 brand new electric buses take to the roads in China. That’s the equivalent to the entire London bus fleet, according to Bloomberg Energy Finance data. Only 1.6 per cent of city buses in Europe are electric, and a smaller 0.5 per cent in the US." ANOTHER JAGUAR EV - WITH A DIFFERENCE! More news from Jaguar and it's not about the I-PACE. "Jaguar’s battery-powered V20E boat just broke a maritime speed record" according to The Verge. "Peter Dredge, the co-founder of Jaguar Vector, piloted the boat at speeds of 88.62 miles per hour across eight miles of the Coniston Water lake in Cumbria, England. His speeds broke the previous record of 76.8 mph set ten years ago. The specifics of the battery, motor, and controller are unclear, but the team used similar hardware and technology that Jaguar uses in Formula E, the all-electric street racing series." http://www.williamsf1.com/advanced-engineering/news/jaguar-vector-racing-break-maritime-electric-world-record-with-williams-advanced-engineering COMMUNITY YouTube comments about blocking. Thursday 10th May 2018. FULLY CHARGED DRIVE MERCEDES EQC Only yesterday I was talking about a 1min long YouTube video, all shaky and blurry, showing the Mercedes EQC. With me like a numpty going on about how the bonnet looks too long for an EV. And then a few hours later Fully Charged released 20 mins of gorgeousness as Jonny Smith got in the passenger seat. As they say: "Jonny Smith goes for a ride in the Mercedes-Benz EQC. This SUV is the first Mercedes EV to be built from the ground up and it will the first of the new range of electrified cars to be announced later this year. The EQC is still in testing so this is a very early look at what is to come in the near future." Jonny's style is SO good, relaxed and asking the odd cheeky question, getting bits of info out of PR people who are notoriously tight lipped. I was talking to someone recently about him, someone I know who work on car magazine, and I was saying how Johnny is the best of the best when it comes to telling the story of a car...and then my friend tells me Jonny used to work for him on a magazine. And yes, he also confirmed, he's a bit of a legend. Anyway away from my mancrush and back to the Mercedes EQC. I’m about to say a couple of details from the vid, so if you’d rather, stop the podcast now. Johnny started off by saying it was their first proper EV, which I’ve said before, and got corrected by a very generous listener - rather than telling me I am an idiot, he sent me a pic of his B250. So yes, this isn't Mercedes first EV. Things we learn from the video, it's a 70kWh pack which seems small They want 500km or 310miles from that, which sounds optimistic? That would be 14kWh per 100km. The Model X is something like 380km with a pack 5kWh larger. The person who was doing the driving and most of the talking was the lead engineer, which was refreshing, as he wasn't a typical PR media type with a perfect answer which says a lot without saying anything, everything he said has value. Typical engineer. And bear in mind English is not his first language. Talking about the engineer who was driving it, he kept stabbing the accelerator and giving Jonny that burst of EV power, and every time he did it gave a little smile. Yesterday on the podcast I commented that the bonnet is too long, they could make it smaller and just have a crash structure, which makes more room for the cabin. That was explained because the platform will be used for electric, hybrid and gas. Under the hood or bonnet is a cradle that fits where the combustion engine fits, so Mercedes can use the same production line and drop in the powertrain. And…Jonny ends up on his hand and knees. But I won’t spoilt THAT surprise. Finally if you haven’t been watching Fully Charged, go onto YouTube, go back a few years and see Robert talking about trying to cajole PR departments to return calls or play ball with lending him vehicles. Fast forward and they have the best videos than any TV show, a live event soon and a massive Patreon supporter base. Huge congrats to Robert, Jonny, Mark, Dan and the team for creating a great channel. It's another gorgeous video with some classy tracking shots and they've got the drone up. BMW WIRELESS CAR CHARGING COMING SOON Car Magazine reports that BMW will debut it's wireless charging in July this year, and it's set to work with BMW PHEV's. The Car Magazine article says: "BMW sources told CAR today (May 8) that the tech is indeed headed for our market, and will be available exclusively on a leasing deal with a 5-series 530e iPerformance. To start with, that is". Wireless charging can be as good as a home Level 2 charger at 7.7kW, although this BMW systen works at 3.5kW for a full charge in 3-4hrs. There's leeway on being over the charging pad but cameras will guide into you the correct position. Well worth following CAR on socials, they are some of the best out there for great content. GOVERNMENT APPROVES GREEN LICENCE PLATES FOR E-VEHICLES In India they have confirmed green plates for EVs, private electric cars and EV cabs. "The purpose behind distinctive number plates is their easy identification for preferential treatment in parking, free entry in congested zones besides other proposed benefits like concessional toll, the road transport" says MoneyControl.com. This is what we need here for ICE cars parking in electric charging bays. If we all had green plates and legislation to keep EVs in certain spaces, it would mean those ICE cars would get tickets or towed. THE 'DRY ANALYST' WANTS ROUND TWO WITH ELON Dry Dave wants another go with Elon. I didn't actually catch the name of the analyst on the Tesla earning call who got cut off by Elon for asking a dry question, so we'll call him Dry Dave for now. I’ll Google him whilst talking. Anyway, he's p'eed off. And you don't want an upset analyst because, well, who knows what they do? Anyway, now Dry Dave has written an open letter to Elon - which sounds a bit needy already - he says "I continue to hold Tesla accountable for implementing a strategic vision that aligns with an ability to execute at scale. Name the time and place and I will be there, along with every one of your major shareholders." He's also sent Elon a set of written questions which I imagine he'll hope are more...I don’t know…wet? Somehow I don't think Elon will even give this a second of his time. Ah here we are, his name is Joseph Spek apparently. Spekky! I wouldn't hold your breath for that call Super Speks. GERMANY'S MERKEL SEES CHANCE FOR ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY PRODUCTION IN EUROPE German Chancellor Angela Merkel said yesterday that German car makers are moving into a better position for battery production. The actual cells inside batteries all come from South Korea or China. Volkswagen-owned truck maker Scania said earlier this year it is investing 10m Euro as part of a 4bn Euro project to build Europe's biggest battery cell plant in northern Sweden. ONE THIRD OF IRISH DRIVERS PLAN TO BUY A FULL-ELECTRIC CAR IN NEAR FUTURE Yesterday we told you how 50million, or 20% of Americans are considering an EV for their next car. Now the Irish Mirror says: "One in three Irish motorists planning on buying a new car in the near future will go for a full-electric vehicle, according to a new survey. A total of 37% of people questioned said they will buy an electrified car next time around." NEW LAW TO SEE ELECTRIC CARS MAKE MORE NOISE "From July 2019, all new electric and hybrid vehicles sold in Europe must be equipped with sound devices. Older electric cars must also be retrofitted with sound devices by 2021" says Garage Wire. Kevin Clinton of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said: “The greatest risks associated with electric vehicles are when they are travelling at low speeds, such as in urban areas with lower limits, as the noise from tyres and the road surface, and aerodynamic noise, are minimal at those speeds" But you do still have eyes. I do think we need to consider those who are visually impaired. But making every single car emit white noise is going to be irritating. Driving around a city you never get another 20mph, and with the windows down, your EV would actually be louder than an ICE car. Multiply that by every other car on the road. All we’ll hear is buzzes and beeps and white noise. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Monday 19th February 2018. On the podcast today… You’ve heard the argument a thousand times – someone won’t buy an EV until the time it takes to charge is the same as filling up with a tank at the petrol station. But now a new study shows that owning an EV actually saves you time because of where and when you charge. https://cleantechnica.com/2018/02/18/evs-can-actually-save-time-depending-driving-circumstances/ A new video clip of the Tesla Roaster has surfaced which was actually shot on 14th February – happy Valentine’s Day to this person who saw some testing at the Freemont factory test track. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-roadster-spy-shot-launch-fremont-factory-test-track/ Meanwhile, remember those shots of Model 3’s in air freight, strapped in and heading to Germany via aircraft? Now a German newspaper says one of the luxury Germany marques paid $230,000 for each car before test driving them and then dismantling them. https://electrek.co/2018/02/17/tesla-model-3-german-automaker-reverse-engineered/ More details about the performance of the Porsche Mission E seem to confirm that whilst it would lose a drag race to a Tesla Model S, it’s being engineered to have all of its power available for a longer period of time. This makes it suitable to track days thanks to an advanced cooling system. https://carbuzz.com/news/porsche-mission-e-will-destroy-the-tesla-model-s-at-the-track The Chevrolet Bolt is starting to show increased sales from former Model 3 reservation holders who are frustrated at continued delays. In the U.S. it also means they are guaranteed to get the maximum possible tax rebate. https://carbuzz.com/news/chevrolet-has-tesla-to-thank-for-a-run-on-bolt-evs And finally a recommendation of what to watch on Youtube. If you haven’t already seen it, you have to check out the latest video from Fully Charged with Jonny Smith heading to California to test three VW concept cars – the ID, ID Crozz and ID Buzz. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQut6ks3nSY&feature=youtu.be Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
