Mi conversación con Maielis González explora las motivaciones detrás del proceso de creación de su novela juvenil de ciencia ficción Espejuelos para ver por dentro (San Fernando: Editorial Cerbero, 2019) y más allá, las razones por las que usa la ciencia ficción y la fantasía como medios expresivos. La premisa del libro parece sencilla: Toda la acción ocurre en Nolugar, una ciudad hermosa y moderna, llena de fantásticos parques y jardines, con casas eco-inteligentes pintadas de blanco y azul, fabulosos campos eólicos y fuentes cristalinas. Pero en esta ciudad sus habitantes usan cada minuto libre en sus mundos virtuales y no quieren perder el tiempo relacionándose físicamente con otras personas. Bueno, Zafira y Nano nunca se conectan al ciberespacio y es por esta peculiaridad que acabarán descubriendo un secreto que cambiará para siempre todo cuanto conocen. Espejuelos… es parte de la colección juvenil de Cerbero y es razonable: los personajes principales tienen doce años y una parte importante de las peripecias se relacionan con las interacciones escolares y familiares. Maielis González explora en su argumento temas importantes para ese grupo poblacional como el acoso escolar, las implicaciones éticas de la violencia en los videojuegos y cómo enfrentar la ciberadicción. Sin embargo, el conflicto principal del relato es la confrontación de Zafira, Nano y familias con un culto que se autodenomina “los posthumanos”: el hilo conductor de la novela denuncia y critica las estrategias de los grupos religiosos que buscan infiltrarse en las estructuras gubernamentales para avanzar sus agendas de intolerancia social, a costa incluso de la vida de su membresía. Algo que distingue a Espejuelos… en el panorama de la ciencia ficción cubana son sus protagonistas. Zafira y Nano definidos por su estatus marginal: de acuerdo con sus pares, se trata de un par de anormales, que se resisten a acumular objetos y participar en videojuegos. Son, en fin, personajes “queer”. Es precisamente su condición marginal lo que les permite descubrir y enfrentar al grupo de los posthumanos. González convierte la condición queer de Zafira y Nano en un valor positivo, no algo que deben “superar”, sino que les salva.
