We're going NUTS today because the legendary Latrice Royale is on the show! Latrice chats with Delta about her days selling nuts on QVC to her upcoming line of cannabis products, and what she considers her most rewarding work so far: We're Here. The two also bond over their dislike for restaurant booth seating, and Delta shares one of her most embarrassing stories (Souplantation, anyone?). Plus, Delta lets Joann Fabric and Crafts HAVE it! It's impossible to kill a restaurant chain, even when it's dead. This week's episode of A Deeper Dive features a discussion on a fascinating phenomenon in the restaurant world lately: Operators bringing formerly dead or dying brands back to life. RB colleagues Lisa Jennings and Joe Guszkowski join me to talk about three such concepts: Steak & Ale, Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes and Ground Round. Steak & Ale, a Norman Brinker-created brand that was a casual-dining pioneer, recently opened a location in suburban Minneapolis, 15 years after the entire chain was shut down. Sweet Tomatoes, a buffet concept that was killed in a 2020, pandemic-related shutdown, recently opened a location in Arizona. And Ground Round—which still has a couple of locations open in the west—is planning a new location in Massachusetts. Why are these brands coming back? And most importantly, can these chains survive off nostalgia alone? We're about to find out. We're chatting about resurrected restaurant brands this week so check it out.

On this episode, we do the only good thing we've ever done on this show: we make the ultimate tier list of Swears. Leighton learns what bath salts are. We discuss Curb Your Enthusiasm's jarring time skip. There's talk of books. And skincare. And Paul Verhoeven! Look, I'm testing a different format for these descriptions. You know, to feel something. Attempt unsuccessful; back to your regularly scheduled description format next week. This part is regular: follow us on Twitter at @leightonnight and on Instagram at @leighton_night. Click click click! Heat that sound?!? It can only be one thing: the ominous, predator clicking of the Yautja. What's a Yautja, you ask? It's the fancy name for the deadly alien species known to moviegoers as the Predator! Yeah, you probably thought you were cool for knowing the term Xenomorph, didn't you? Well now the Yautja has come to let you know your pop culture vocabulary isn't QUITE as good as you thought it was. Anyhoo, Dan cooked up some VERY silly ideas for ways in which Predators could end up in other pop culture properties, then Dave (no, not that Dave), Jess, and Nick had a good time coming up with their very silly titles. Round two is an audio extravaganza that looks at the vanity cartoon projects of several celebrities over the years, in case you were worried that that Predator game wasn't dumb enough. Also, there's a lightning round, as though that would surprise any of you. NOTES ⚠️ Inline notes below may be truncated due to podcast feed character limits. January 22nd is known in Los Angeles as “Justin Turner Day” in recognition of the incredible impact the Dodgers All-Star third baseman Justin Turner, and his wife Kourtney, have made in the community. Justin also ponders if fellow Cal-State Fullerton alum Danielle is a Dodgers good luck charm and gives his thoughts on if this COVID break will make things easier for the Astros. An interview with Michael Mack. As co-founder and CEO of Garden Fresh Restaurant Corp., he led an expansion from 2 to over 125 Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes restaurants in 15 states. But Micheal's journey would see him fired from the company he founded. How he handled being fired and the years following is a fascinating study in the power of being vulnerable.

Plus, is there any better smell out there in the world than “petrichor”? And what exactly is the point of the Antiques Roadshow? Gotta question for Janie and Aaron? Szzzzzz. You know what that sound means, Alfred Aquino hops on the pod this week to talk about—you guessed it—Sizzler. Is this Doughboys? No, it’s still Convince Me. Alfred claims that Sizzler has more options than all the other buffet chains (e.g. Souplantation), with the same or even better quality! I (Geoff) think that violates the basic principles of Economics. Along the way, Ben tries to make the episode about skateboarding, we have yet another freestyling character walk in, and Thayer learns what a salad bar is. Check out Alfred’s sketch team The New Deal at UCB the first Wednesday of every month, and follow him on IG at alfredzass. Hyperlinks! Do you reuse plates at a buffet? Is stealing a universally reprehensible behavior, or is there a real art to knowing how get the copper out of someone's AC unit without them knowing? Is the National Shoplifting League going to eclipse the NFL as the next great American sport, or do teenagers just have too much time on their hands. Will u/itsyerdad be recruited to join the cast of Ocean's 11 because of his cunning Whole Foods "Soup" trick? These are the kinds of questions you might be able to answer on r/stealing, a sub for professional and amateur thieves to discuss the tricks of their ethically challenging trade. Speaking of Soup, what's the deal with Souplantation? Is shaved lettuce and shredded lettuce the same thing? And will designer dogs become the delicacies during the next world war? This episode brought to you by soup and trueswords.com
Well howdy y’all! Welcome to the Souplantation! We sure wasn’t expecting no visitors, but since y’all’s here, we might as well sit for a spell and have a bowl of my grandpappy’s famous corn chowder. We grew it ourselves right in them soup fields over yonder. Now that you’ve got your soup, how’s about a little suppertime entertainment? Our good friends Nathan and Caldwell have prepared a humdinger of a performance for y’all. They even invited their good friend Pat Cassels (A city boy what writes for that Samantha Bee program) to help out with their japes. So unbuckle your belt, grab an extra bread bowl, and get ready for a souper-sized spoonful of hilarious hi-jinks and hootenanny! This week we're back Jason, Andre & Chris chat about beef rolls, souplantation, lots of souplantation related ideas, best thing we ate, coffee, and other stuff !
Is it rude to not tie your garbage bag before tossing it in the can? This was the genesis of a disagreement in the House of Greg so we moved said conflict to the show. We also did an epic Easter-themed Snack Chat with goodies Jenna and Al brought back from Utah, discussed buffets and Souplantation, discussed the word "plantation" and talked about Alison and Greg's upcoming TV shoot. Plus drug and injection chat in The Biological Clock, Dustin's wedding, Star Wars and Game of Thrones. And we did a round of Just Me Or Everyone and talked about an adoptable dog named Elmo.
Dave tries to save local democracy and instead ends up at Souplantation. Chris votes with his gas pedal.
Well, here we are. A new Jewish year and what have we learned? Well, we're about to learn a lot about Barbra Streisand. She, and her bizarre fake basement shopping mall, are the subject of the fantastic play BUYER AND CELLAR, and its playwright JONATHAN TOLINS and its star MICHAEL URIE are our guests for this week's show. Therefore! This week's show features an examination of: whether or not Barbra truly likes to eat; why it was a blessing that The New Yorker rejected Tollins's idea as an essay originally; what James Brolin must really be like based on the time he tore an ad out of a magazine that one time; how Barbra would sound on the phone if she were applying for a job at Souplantation, and so, so much more. Furthermore: enjoy the following things, also, which are discussed in cartoonish abundance. The preference of being happy over being healthy! The weird nature-objects that comprise a Sukkos celebration! A lot of talk about Charles Manson and how shitty the '60s must have been if you were black or female! And a major guilt trip concerning the upcoming release of the Citibike photos. A legendary show studded with Divadom.
