When you're filling in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, the idea of an international competition testing those skills is probably far from your mind. Yet Excel has become an esport, with competitors from around the world solving high‑pressure challenges on a major stage in Las Vegas. This year, University of Pretoria student Pieter Pienaar became the world champion in the 2025 Microsoft Excel Collegiate Challenge. Pienaar, who is currently completing his chartered accountant articles with PwC, told BizNews that for him Excel is a powerful problem‑solving tool, and that is exactly what the championship tested. When it comes to future developments in Excel, he strongly supports the role of AI because it democratises problem‑solving, provided companies act responsibly and ensure proper auditing. But, he adds, it should definitely not be used by the National Treasury to do your taxes.

Steph Pienaar continues week two of our Advent: Promises Delivered series, exploring Isaiah 9:1 to 7. This passage points us to the child who is called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. Together we reflect on Jesus as the true light who enters our darkness and brokenness, bringing hope, wisdom and peace. Advent invites us to name the darkness honestly, so that we can celebrate the light we have in Christ more fully.

Steph continues our God & Sex series by exploring how our sexuality shapes us. Are we being formed into the image of Christ—or something else—by the choices we make? From cultural extremes of repression and indulgence, Jesus offers a better way: the redirection of desire and deep satisfaction in Him. Key scriptures include 1 Thessalonians 4:1–8 and Psalm 32:5.
In our final week of the 1 John series, Stephan Pienaar unpacks 1 John 5:13–21 - a call to confident faith in confusing times. John reminds us that we have eternal life, access to God in prayer, victory over sin, and a true Saviour in Jesus. This is more than doctrine - it's assurance that anchors us. In a world of distortion and idols, we stand firm as God's beloved children, secure in Christ.

The Pienaar community in Mpumalanga has been plagued by a crippling lack of social services, including vital support such as social grants, counselling, and pauper burials. The crisis began several months ago when the Department of Social Development's (DSD) offices were abruptly closed. The community and the department are now embroiled in a bitter dispute, with each side trading accusations. The community alleges that the department flouted hiring guidelines, appointing friends and associates to key management positions, while the department claims the community locked its gates without justification. To shed more light on this contentious issue, Elvis Presslin spoke to Pienaar Community Spokesperson, Sthembiso Sithole
In a recent Foreign Policy article, President Cyril Ramaphosa and co-authors condemned Israel's military actions in Gaza, citing the estimated deaths of 61,000 Palestinians as violations of international law and calling for collective action to end impunity. However, André Pienaar, founder and CEO of C5 Capital and former founding member of South Africa's Scorpions unit, criticised Ramaphosa's stance as hypocritical in an interview with Biznews. Pienaar argued that Ramaphosa has failed to address South Africa's soaring murder rates, pointing out that the victims under his presidency could overflow the 94,736-seat FNB Stadium. He emphasised that the president has a constitutional duty to protect citizens from crime, highlighting daily murders, kidnappings, and low prosecution rates as constitutional failures. Defending Israel's actions in Gaza as self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter, Pienaar urged South Africans to strengthen ties with Israel. He also announced a private initiative to foster connections between South Africans and Israelis and to create a digital museum honouring victims of violent crime in South Africa.

Cyclists and pedestrians take over Latah near the railroad crossing. (Murphy Woodhouse / Boise State Public Radio )Right around noon on a bluebird September Sunday in Boise, a pack of cyclists dozens strong turned south onto Latah Street, a chorus of bike bells sounding. A large group of cyclists cruises south on Latah around noon on Sunday, Sept 22, when Boise held its first Open Streets event.(Murphy Woodhouse / Boise State Public Radio )They cruised past a barricade, where police and volunteers were turning motorists away. Several hundred yards in, the Boise Good Times Street Band welcomed riders with a jaunty rendition of Give My Regards to Broadway. Wide, business-lined Latah is soon packed with bikers, walkers, roller skaters and at least one person on stilts.Food trucks and other stands line the one-mile segment of the street, and long lines stretch out of the cafes and restaurants on the route. Long lines stretched out of the cafes and restaurants on Latah during the event.(Murphy Woodhouse)Lindsey Lind and her family – husband Eric, their two young children, and two dogs – had walked from their nearby home. They're standing in line for some birria tacos.“It's kind of weird,” she said, standing in the middle of the road. “Like, I feel like I keep needing to move over to the side.”Eric described Latah on a normal day.“It's busy, and usually people aren't doing 30 miles an hour,” he said. “It's, you know, 35, 40.”“Or more,” Lindsey interjected. They loved the vibrant sense of community surrounding them, and the promotion of green alternatives to driving.“I think it helps people slow down a little bit and see kind of what's out here as far as businesses and, you know, it kind of puts maybe some of these businesses on the map,” Eric said. Austin Clark, owner of Primal Coffee on Latah, plays fiddle with his friend Matt Hopper's band The Roman Candles in front of his cafe during the Open Streets event. "I think I knew it would be a good coordinated event, so I was happy to be a part of it and see where it goes," he said.(Murphy Woodhouse / Boise State Public Radio )“I think it's really awesome for Latah's business, this kind of exposure,” said Austin Clark, owner of Primal Coffee, located on the street. “Maybe a lot of people don't come up onto Latah ever, you know, because there's no reason to. But now they've got a reason to come.”Sending a messageThese are exactly the sorts of sentiments organizers of Boise's first Open Streets event were hoping to inspire.“All the chips fell into place. It worked out really well. And here we are today with close to, I would say like 3000 people,” said Nina Pienaar, advocacy director at the Boise Bicycle Project (BBP). Several days after the event, organizers later provided an updated figure of over 6,000. Bike racks were packed tight on Latah Street during the event.(Murphy Woodhouse / Boise State Public Radio )BBP worked closely with Ada County, Boise, and other local officials to develop location criteria, then surveyed neighborhoods to find a spot with local buy-in. They ultimately landed on Latah.Pienaar said the strong turnout “sends the message loud and clear that like, ‘Hey, the Boise community, we're out biking, we're out walking. We want to see more infrastructure. We want to be able to choose to bike and to walk rather than choosing to get into our vehicles.'”The second Open Streets event is already planned for next year, according to an official with the City of Boise, which sponsored the event. But with thousands in the street for the first event, Pienaar said there's huge potential for a more regular schedule, perhaps even biweekly during the summer, adding: “The more the better.”Social animals“The concept is really, really simple. You open streets to people and you close them to cars. And the magic happens,” said Gil Penalosa. “You get young and old and rich and poor and fat and skinny, and you get everybody.”Penalosa is an urban planner who now lives in Toronto, where he was the runner-up in the 2022 mayoral election. But as an official in the Colombian capital of Bogotá in the late 1990s, he helped dramatically expand the city's weekly ciclovía program, credited as the seed of the global Open Streets movement. Every Sunday some 1.5 million Bogotanos cruise around 80 miles of car-free roads.“Why is it spreading?” he asked. “I think because humans are social animals, and we want to be with other people.”A winged stilt walker makes their way down Latah. (Murphy Woodhouse / Boise State Public Radio )The many benefits of Open Streets are best achieved with frequent repetition, especially the health benefits, Penalosa argued. But in a time of often ugly divisiveness, he said anything that brings a diverse swath of a community together is good.“The possibility of people meeting as equals is really, really, really important,” he said.He acknowledges that some officials and businesses can blanch at shutting down significant stretches of roadways to cars, but encourages cities that haven't tried it to be gutsy.“I've seen it [be] successful … in cities of 50,000 people or 500,000 or 5 million, 20 million. It works everywhere,” Penalosa said. “I've seen it in poor cities, in wealthy cities, and it makes everybody happier and healthier. And also to keep in mind that this is low-risk, this is low-cost and has very high benefits.”Terra Reed, an organizer of the Albuquerque Open Streets event Ciclovía – now in its 10th year – similarly encouraged other cities to give it a go, saying that it doesn't have to be huge to be a success. From their experience, she said “having strong ties” with local governments is especially important to start and maintain such efforts.“Try to build those relationships early,” she advised.Just keep pedalingIn a parking lot off Latah, young kids are buzzing around a bicycle skills course. 6-and-a-half-year-old Margot Mace makes her way around a bicycle skills course.(Murphy Woodhouse / Boise State Public Radio )Margot Mace, who's 6-and-a-half years old, is getting frustrated trying to ride her bike over a teeter-totter obstacle.“You can do it, keep pedaling,” her mom, Beth Edwards, encouraged.“It doesn't let me do it,” Margot shouted in frustration after another failed attempt.Beth said they had ridden to Latah with dozens of others – and got a taste of the danger cyclists face in the city.“We were trying to get across Orchard (Street) and a car almost ran us down,” she recounted. “We were a big group of bikers, so we weren't just one cycling family or one person. There was 40 of us and a car still almost ran us down.”Edwards had heard of Open Streets, but didn't really know much about the idea until that Sunday. She loved its emphasis on safety for all road users.“We are just kinda constantly living with that ‘Llook out! Look out!'” she said. “Coming here and being free and seeing her just riding safely and freely is a pretty awesome feeling.”After three failed attempts, Margot backed up to give it one more go. She rolled up and over to the applause of spectators.“I just love how she never gives up,” Beth said. “That's all it takes.”This story was produced by the Mountain West News Bureau, a collaboration between Wyoming Public Media, Nevada Public Radio, Boise State Public Radio in Idaho, KUNR in Nevada, KUNC in Colorado and KANW in New Mexico, with support from affiliate stations across the region. André Pienaar is a venture capitalist, CEO, and founder of C5 Capital, a firm with a diverse portfolio spanning the cybersecurity, space, and nuclear power industries. He is also one of the co-founders of the Scorpions, which, according to Pienaar, was one of the most successful law enforcement units. However, it was dismantled by former President Jacob Zuma after the Scorpions started investigating Zuma and the Commissioner of Police, Jackie Selebi, for corruption. Pienaar was accused by Zuma of being a CIA spy, a claim that Pienaar says in an interview with Biznews, “placed a marker on me and my family as a form of intimidation.” Now, 15 years after the disbanding of the Scorpions, Pienaar has decided to fight back. He shares some details of the events in a recent article in National Security News and is planning to reveal more in an upcoming book scheduled for publication in August titled: “Mandela's Untouchables – The Scorpions and the Fight for Justice in South Africa.” Pienaar alleges that Zuma has ‘Russian masters' and that the uMkhonto weSizwe (ML) party is a proxy of the GRU, Russia's Military Intelligence Service. He describes it as one of the most dangerous and predatory intelligence organisations in the world that “will undoubtedly try to interfere in the South African elections.” Pienaar also accuses President Cyril Ramaphosa of having done an “unlawful” deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Russia Africa summit in St Petersburg in 2023 to keep Zuma out of prison. Regarding the potential reinstatement of the Scorpions, Pienaar remarked that it was possible. However, it would take great political will to fight organised crime in the country. The process should be started, he says, by giving Zuma his day in court and by sending him back to prison to complete his sentence for contempt of court after failing to appear before the Zondo Commission into corruption.

This is a powerful episode, its very raw and rather emotional but I have Aleisha Pienaar to guest who shares her story of her Dad who had a heart attack last year at the tender age of 53 and who was, after being revived, left fighting for his life in ICU. Aleisha had read my book "Relentless" and had attended one of my speeches where I talked about my Mum and Dad's stories, It was in her time of need that these stories became the catalyst for her to fight hard for her Dad. The ICU team were convinced her Dad would not wake up from the coma and that if he did, after having been without oxygen for 46 minutes, that his life would be not worth living and that the brain damage would be massive or he would be in a vegetative state. They were told they must take him off life support. Aleisha reached out and I encouraged her to fight, to be vigilant and not to give up when all others had. A couple of days after they were told to take him off life support her father incredibly, woke up and although his rehab was hard and rather long her Dad is now back full into life, working, exercising and enjoying his family again. I share too, my personal story of fighting for my Dad in ICU and how I was blocked at every turn from getting what I needed for him. Please note these are our very personal, real stories and your experiences may be very different but we want to share openly, the good, the bad and the very ugly of what we experienced and a message of empowerment and a message of not to give up too early. If I had my mum would also not be with us now. We hope by sharing this, we will help other families faced with similar situations, we also hope that it might initiate change in our system. I have a dream and that is to get a law change in NZ - to get "The Right to Try" law which is implemented in some states in the USA which basically says that if the doctors have no more answers and someone is dying that you can sign a waiver and try anything reasonable to save that person's life. I wanted that for my Dad, I was wanting intravenous vitamin C and thiamine as per the protocol of this study But I was blocked due to legal issues and I had to fight for 15 days against the ethics committee - all mind you, while my father was dying and they had nothing more to offer and while they were actively trying to get me to sign off on taking him off life support. I eventually won the right by finding a loophole that allowed Dad's GP to come in and administer it but by then he was in multiple organ failure and could die at any minute and despite that the very first infusion (which was only half of what I wanted) dropped his CRP in half, improved his kidney function and enabled them to take him of Noradrenaline but then we were blocked for 18 hours from getting him the next infusion and again the next infusion and by then - it was way too little and way too late and I was forced to take him off life support and they morphined him in front of my own eyes until he died. Now I am left not knowing if we had been allowed to do it from the very beginning whether his life could have been saved and quite openly I have been left severely traumatized from this experience. Some of the things I witnessed in there were horrifying, I don't and can't share all of what we went through but suffice to say I believe things could have been different had we been given a chance. BIO Aleisha and her husband, Emil, are based in Dunedin Otepoti, New Zealand. Aleisha is a full-time parent to two little girls, and Emil manages a rest home. They have a heart for people whose voices are not heard, and have invested time in humanitarian work in the Amazon Jungle, as well as local outreaches to those who struggle in their home city. With a strong mission-mindset, Aleisha and Emil are working towards creating more impact in their community. They have faced several medical challenges, including misdiagnosis of a now-irreversible medical condition, two miscarriages, as well as the very near loss of Aleisha's father to a heart attack. As a whanau, their desire is to raise awareness of complications in the medical field that can be addressed if caught early enough, and believe that if enough people are vulnerable and willing enough to share their story, we can see a change in the health care system that will bring a lot more happy endings. And now a summary of how your book and story helped us save my dad. Lisa spoke at a conference that Emil and I attended two years ago, sharing the story of how she rehabilitated her mother through determination, self-education, and persistence. In 2022, I found myself facing a similar situation, when my father suffered a catastrophic heart attack. In all the confusion and uncertainty, Lisa's story came to mind, and I knew I needed to get my hands on her book, "Relentless." I devoured the pages, reread my notes from the conference, and what I immediately saw was the importance of standing firm, comparmentalizing emotions, and taking the necessary steps to fight for my dad's right to live. After a few days, we were asked to consider turning off my father's life support. I wasn't willing to settle for that result, and insisted that he remain on life support until we were able to successfully wake him and assess his brain function. The very next day, my father woke safely from his coma, and responded to instructions the doctors gave him. After a month in ICU, dealing with multiple crises and complications, my father was healthy enough to come home. His brain function is perfect. A few months of physical therapy rebuilt his muscle mass. He is completely himself, and alive, thanks to Lisa sharing her story two years ago. We are so grateful! Today we're learning from Charlotte Chen Pienaar, the founder behind one of the coolest bootstrapped companies around right now. Everyday Humans make next-generation sunscreens that are comfortable, conscious and designed for all. We're talking about how she approaches money and the old school tips to funding a CPG brand, why retailers like Ulta and Sephora came knocking on her door and the pros and cons to creating a truly sustainable brand. When it comes to the retail landscape, there are the key aspects that can make you stand out in pitching to those big names. Firstly, the branding should be inclusive. They champion a diverse customer range. Originally aimed at ages 25-35, they've found customers all the way down to 16 and up to 65. A lot can be said for finding a brand language that can be as inclusive as that. Secondly, diversity. Everyday Humans champions itself on being a never-ordinary SPF brand. They're against average SPF. No sun, no yellow branding. They really are different. Basically, differentiation matters. To buyers, to the competition, and to your success. Finally, make sure there's a focus on sustainability. Young people are super concerned about the environment, and about where they spend their money. Retailers really like that. On June 24, 1995, Johannesburg's Ellis Park stadium witnessed “one of the most glorious moments in politics and sport of the 20th century”. South African President Nelson Mandela, elected a year earlier in his country's first democratic elections, donned the jersey of the captain of the national rugby team, Francois Pienaar, and walked onto the pitch to greet each member of the team, which was playing in the World Cup final that day. The gesture could have cost Madiba dearly - rugby was the sport of the Afrikaners. ‘Invictus', a film based on John Carlin's book “The Human Factor”, tells the story. To this day, Francois Pienaar remains the second icon of his country after Mandela.
