This week I had a wonderful chat with Deanna Aliano who at the age of 47 did her first painting for a close friend and since that day Deanna realized how much she loves to paint. After the death of her the death of her father she turned to her craft to help express her grief. Proprio per questo, “Tutta la vita è lontano” è un progetto integrato e multidisciplinare, specchio della straordinaria versatilità di Levi: dibattiti e approfondimenti dedicati alle sue opere e al suo impegno politico e civile, ma anche pittura, cinema, fotografia, musica, per dare vita a un programma eclettico che troverà casa al Circolo dei lettori, ma anche alla GAM e al Cinema Massimo, da mercoledì 9 febbraio.L'opera. Al centro del palinsesto saranno i romanzi più importanti di Levi, con lezioni-racconto di grandi autori per esplorare e approfondire. Il primo appuntamento (mercoledì 9 febbraio, ore 21, Circolo dei lettori) sarà “Quando l'Italia non è cambiata”: Francesco Piccolo racconterà L'Orologio (edito da Einaudi) e attraverso la sua opera, uno dei grandi romanzi del Novecento, denso di corrispondenze con il periodo storico che stiamo vivendo, offrirà un affresco della stagione politica del secondo dopoguerra, il momento decisivo in cui l'Italia è diventata quello che è diventata. Giovedì 10 febbraio, alle 18:30, Claudia Durastanti ripercorrerà i ricordi dell'amicizia con Piero Gobetti, le osservazioni sulla poesia di Umberto Saba, le riflessioni sui cambiamenti in atto nel Meridione, le analisi del rapporto tra scrittori, malattia e medicina, la visione poetica del mondo e l'impegno civile, a partire da Un dolente amore per la vita, la raccolta di conversazioni e interviste telefoniche di Carlo Levi (edito da Donzelli). Si prosegue venerdì 11 febbraio, alle 18, sempre al Circolo, con “Poesia e verità. Un viaggio nell'opera di Carlo Levi” insieme a Luca Beatrice, Filippo La Porta ed Elena Loewenthal. Un confronto sulla figura di Carlo Levi a tutto tondo, tra pittura, letteratura e impegno civile, in cerca della sua cifra più originale ma soprattutto della straordinaria complessità di un artista e intellettuale capace di sfuggire a ogni definizione univoca, appassionato della vita e dell'umano in tutte le sue forme, sempre animato da una fertile curiosità. E ancora, mercoledì 16 febbraio alle 21, il commento di Mario Desiati a partire da La doppia notte dei tigli (edito da Einaudi): il reportage di Carlo Levi (pubblicato nel 1959) sul suo viaggio in Germania Occidentale nel dopoguerra, poco prima che venisse costruito il muro di Berlino, è un libro poco conosciuto, eppure utilissimo per sapere qualcosa in più del rapporto tra italiani, tedeschi e senso di colpa. A conclusione di questo ciclo di incontri, Nicola Lagioia - giovedì 17 febbraio, alle 21 - rileggerà Cristo si è fermato a Eboli (edito da Einaudi), per riflettere su un capolavoro della letteratura del Novecento, un'opera dal grande respiro non solo narrativo ma anche politico, sociale, antropologico, e un modo di raccontare che ha fatto scuola per gli scrittori delle generazioni successive, fino a oggi.Arte. Particolare risalto verrà dato alla pittura, forse il “primo mestiere” di Carlo Levi, fin dal periodo dei Sei di Torino e per il corso dell'intera carriera, che tocca il realismo e l'impegno sociale, pur non abbandonando mai l'ispirazione poetica e l'eleganza del segno e del colore. “Viaggio in Italia. Luoghi e volti” è il titolo della mostra, curata da Luca Beatrice ed Elena Loewenthal e allestita nella Wunderkammer della GAM, Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Torino, a partire dal 10 febbraio 2022. Un'accurata selezione di opere provenienti da collezioni pubbliche (GAM; Fondazione Carlo Levi, Roma; Museo Carlo Levi, Aliano; Pinacoteca Carlo Levi, Alassio) e private farà emergere la peculiarità dell'opera di Levi, che schivò i principali movimenti del suo periodo - il Futurismo e il Surrealismo - rimarcando fin da subito la sua spiccata indipendenza artistica, sviluppando lungo il corso della sua vita una pittura sorprendente, mai uguale a se stessa. L'esposizione guida lo spettatore dal periodo delle prime opere, passando attraverso la fase dei Sei torinesi (1928-1931), per giungere al fascismo, al dopoguerra e al neorealismo. In tutti questi cruciali passaggi del Novecento, il nesso tra pittura e impegno politico rimane strettissimo, caratteristica fondamentale del sentire artistico di Levi. In occasione della mostra verrà prodotto un catalogo, edito da Silvana, illustrato e introdotto da Riccardo Passoni, direttore della GAM; con testi di Elena Loewenthal, direttore della Fondazione Circolo dei lettori e scrittrice e Luca Beatrice, critico e storico dell'arte e Walter Guadagnini, direttore di CAMERA. La mostra sarà visitabile fino all'8 maggio 2022.Fotografia. La mostra “La Lucania nelle fotografie di Mario Carbone per Carlo Levi. Una testimonianza di vita, dell'esistenza di un mondo vero, fuori dalla storia e dai suoi orrendi risultati” - a cura di Elena Loewenthal e Luca Beatrice, in collaborazione con CAMERA - Centro Italiano per la Fotografia - raccoglie 31 fotografie scattate da Mario Carbone, provenienti dall'Archivio fotografico Mario Carbone Roma, e sarà ospitata in Sala Lettura, al Circolo dei Lettori di Torino. Carbone seguì Levi in Basilicata nel 1960 per documentare il viaggio istituzionale, nel quadro delle celebrazioni del centenario dell'Unità d'Italia, che aveva come obiettivo la preparazione del Telero poi esposto a Torino per "Italia '61". Gli scatti ritraggono Levi in varie città (Eboli, Matera, Grassano, Ferrandina, Pisticci) e allo stesso tempo costituiscono un racconto per immagini della quotidianità di un Sud Italia nel quale la modernità, nel 1960, si stava soltanto affacciando. Anche questa sezione dell'iniziativa viene documentata nel catalogo succitato, con la riproduzione delle fotografie esposte e un saggio di Walter Guadagnini, direttore di CAMERA, che rilegge questo fondamentale episodio della fotografia realista italiana attraverso la singolare figura di Mario Carbone. A corredo delle fotografie sono esposti alcuni oggetti appartenuti a Levi, gentilmente concessi dal Comune di Aliano.Cinema. In collaborazione con il Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino e CSC-Archivio Nazionale Cinema Impresa, inoltre, sarà organizzata una rassegna che ripercorre il rapporto di Levi con il cinema. Levi fu infatti sceneggiatore di Il grido della terra di Duilio Coletti nel 1949, disegnatore e costumista nel perduto Pietro Micca e in Patatrac, e dal romanzo più celebre Cristo si è fermato a Eboli venne tratto il film di Francesco Rosi. La rassegna prevede la proiezione delle cinque pellicole: Cristo si è fermato a Eboli (150', lunedì 14 febbraio, ore 20.30, Cinema Massimo, introduzione di Luca Beatrice ed Elena Loewenthal); Patatrac (69') + Omaggio a Carlo Levi (12', martedì 15 febbraio, ore 18.30, Cinema Massimo); Il grido della terra (90') + frammento Pietro Micca (4', mercoledì 16 febbraio, ore 18.30, Cinema Massimo con introduzione di Sergio Toffetti). Musica. Sabato 12 febbraio, alle 21.00, la sala grande del Circolo dei lettori ospiterà inoltre lo spettacolo “Cristo si è fermato”: un Concerto d'attore in 9 quadri ispirato a Cristo si è fermato a Eboli. La performance indaga alcuni temi nodali del romanzo, risonanti nella memoria collettiva, e tratti antichi ma ancora attuali della terra lucana. Le parole di Levi sono state accostate ad una musica che vuole rappresentare “l'oggi” in continua tensione tra passato e futuro.Maria Antonietta Cancellaro, che ha elaborato il testo, è al clavicembalo, mentre Giovanni Tamborrino ha composto le musiche, scritte per un organico originale che fonde insieme strumenti antichi, moderni e popolari. Sono eseguite da musiciste professioniste provenienti dal territorio pugliese e lucano: Teresa Puntillo al flauto, Chiara Ratti al clarinetto basso, Beatrice Birardi alle percussioni, Maria Antonietta Cancellaro al pianoforte. Proprio per questo, “Tutta la vita è lontano” è un progetto integrato e multidisciplinare, specchio della straordinaria versatilità di Levi: dibattiti e approfondimenti dedicati alle sue opere e al suo impegno politico e civile, ma anche pittura, cinema, fotografia, musica, per dare vita a un programma eclettico che troverà casa al Circolo dei lettori, ma anche alla GAM e al Cinema Massimo, da mercoledì 9 febbraio.L'opera. Al centro del palinsesto saranno i romanzi più importanti di Levi, con lezioni-racconto di grandi autori per esplorare e approfondire. Il primo appuntamento (mercoledì 9 febbraio, ore 21, Circolo dei lettori) sarà “Quando l'Italia non è cambiata”: Francesco Piccolo racconterà L'Orologio (edito da Einaudi) e attraverso la sua opera, uno dei grandi romanzi del Novecento, denso di corrispondenze con il periodo storico che stiamo vivendo, offrirà un affresco della stagione politica del secondo dopoguerra, il momento decisivo in cui l'Italia è diventata quello che è diventata. Giovedì 10 febbraio, alle 18:30, Claudia Durastanti ripercorrerà i ricordi dell'amicizia con Piero Gobetti, le osservazioni sulla poesia di Umberto Saba, le riflessioni sui cambiamenti in atto nel Meridione, le analisi del rapporto tra scrittori, malattia e medicina, la visione poetica del mondo e l'impegno civile, a partire da Un dolente amore per la vita, la raccolta di conversazioni e interviste telefoniche di Carlo Levi (edito da Donzelli). Si prosegue venerdì 11 febbraio, alle 18, sempre al Circolo, con “Poesia e verità. Un viaggio nell'opera di Carlo Levi” insieme a Luca Beatrice, Filippo La Porta ed Elena Loewenthal. Un confronto sulla figura di Carlo Levi a tutto tondo, tra pittura, letteratura e impegno civile, in cerca della sua cifra più originale ma soprattutto della straordinaria complessità di un artista e intellettuale capace di sfuggire a ogni definizione univoca, appassionato della vita e dell'umano in tutte le sue forme, sempre animato da una fertile curiosità. E ancora, mercoledì 16 febbraio alle 21, il commento di Mario Desiati a partire da La doppia notte dei tigli (edito da Einaudi): il reportage di Carlo Levi (pubblicato nel 1959) sul suo viaggio in Germania Occidentale nel dopoguerra, poco prima che venisse costruito il muro di Berlino, è un libro poco conosciuto, eppure utilissimo per sapere qualcosa in più del rapporto tra italiani, tedeschi e senso di colpa. A conclusione di questo ciclo di incontri, Nicola Lagioia - giovedì 17 febbraio, alle 21 - rileggerà Cristo si è fermato a Eboli (edito da Einaudi), per riflettere su un capolavoro della letteratura del Novecento, un'opera dal grande respiro non solo narrativo ma anche politico, sociale, antropologico, e un modo di raccontare che ha fatto scuola per gli scrittori delle generazioni successive, fino a oggi.Arte. Particolare risalto verrà dato alla pittura, forse il “primo mestiere” di Carlo Levi, fin dal periodo dei Sei di Torino e per il corso dell'intera carriera, che tocca il realismo e l'impegno sociale, pur non abbandonando mai l'ispirazione poetica e l'eleganza del segno e del colore. “Viaggio in Italia. Luoghi e volti” è il titolo della mostra, curata da Luca Beatrice ed Elena Loewenthal e allestita nella Wunderkammer della GAM, Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Torino, a partire dal 10 febbraio 2022. Un'accurata selezione di opere provenienti da collezioni pubbliche (GAM; Fondazione Carlo Levi, Roma; Museo Carlo Levi, Aliano; Pinacoteca Carlo Levi, Alassio) e private farà emergere la peculiarità dell'opera di Levi, che schivò i principali movimenti del suo periodo - il Futurismo e il Surrealismo - rimarcando fin da subito la sua spiccata indipendenza artistica, sviluppando lungo il corso della sua vita una pittura sorprendente, mai uguale a se stessa. L'esposizione guida lo spettatore dal periodo delle prime opere, passando attraverso la fase dei Sei torinesi (1928-1931), per giungere al fascismo, al dopoguerra e al neorealismo. In tutti questi cruciali passaggi del Novecento, il nesso tra pittura e impegno politico rimane strettissimo, caratteristica fondamentale del sentire artistico di Levi. In occasione della mostra verrà prodotto un catalogo, edito da Silvana, illustrato e introdotto da Riccardo Passoni, direttore della GAM; con testi di Elena Loewenthal, direttore della Fondazione Circolo dei lettori e scrittrice e Luca Beatrice, critico e storico dell'arte e Walter Guadagnini, direttore di CAMERA. La mostra sarà visitabile fino all'8 maggio 2022.Fotografia. La mostra “La Lucania nelle fotografie di Mario Carbone per Carlo Levi. Una testimonianza di vita, dell'esistenza di un mondo vero, fuori dalla storia e dai suoi orrendi risultati” - a cura di Elena Loewenthal e Luca Beatrice, in collaborazione con CAMERA - Centro Italiano per la Fotografia - raccoglie 31 fotografie scattate da Mario Carbone, provenienti dall'Archivio fotografico Mario Carbone Roma, e sarà ospitata in Sala Lettura, al Circolo dei Lettori di Torino. Carbone seguì Levi in Basilicata nel 1960 per documentare il viaggio istituzionale, nel quadro delle celebrazioni del centenario dell'Unità d'Italia, che aveva come obiettivo la preparazione del Telero poi esposto a Torino per "Italia '61". Gli scatti ritraggono Levi in varie città (Eboli, Matera, Grassano, Ferrandina, Pisticci) e allo stesso tempo costituiscono un racconto per immagini della quotidianità di un Sud Italia nel quale la modernità, nel 1960, si stava soltanto affacciando. Anche questa sezione dell'iniziativa viene documentata nel catalogo succitato, con la riproduzione delle fotografie esposte e un saggio di Walter Guadagnini, direttore di CAMERA, che rilegge questo fondamentale episodio della fotografia realista italiana attraverso la singolare figura di Mario Carbone. A corredo delle fotografie sono esposti alcuni oggetti appartenuti a Levi, gentilmente concessi dal Comune di Aliano.Cinema. In collaborazione con il Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino e CSC-Archivio Nazionale Cinema Impresa, inoltre, sarà organizzata una rassegna che ripercorre il rapporto di Levi con il cinema. Levi fu infatti sceneggiatore di Il grido della terra di Duilio Coletti nel 1949, disegnatore e costumista nel perduto Pietro Micca e in Patatrac, e dal romanzo più celebre Cristo si è fermato a Eboli venne tratto il film di Francesco Rosi. La rassegna prevede la proiezione delle cinque pellicole: Cristo si è fermato a Eboli (150', lunedì 14 febbraio, ore 20.30, Cinema Massimo, introduzione di Luca Beatrice ed Elena Loewenthal); Patatrac (69') + Omaggio a Carlo Levi (12', martedì 15 febbraio, ore 18.30, Cinema Massimo); Il grido della terra (90') + frammento Pietro Micca (4', mercoledì 16 febbraio, ore 18.30, Cinema Massimo con introduzione di Sergio Toffetti). Musica. Sabato 12 febbraio, alle 21.00, la sala grande del Circolo dei lettori ospiterà inoltre lo spettacolo “Cristo si è fermato”: un Concerto d'attore in 9 quadri ispirato a Cristo si è fermato a Eboli. La performance indaga alcuni temi nodali del romanzo, risonanti nella memoria collettiva, e tratti antichi ma ancora attuali della terra lucana. Le parole di Levi sono state accostate ad una musica che vuole rappresentare “l'oggi” in continua tensione tra passato e futuro.Maria Antonietta Cancellaro, che ha elaborato il testo, è al clavicembalo, mentre Giovanni Tamborrino ha composto le musiche, scritte per un organico originale che fonde insieme strumenti antichi, moderni e popolari. Sono eseguite da musiciste professioniste provenienti dal territorio pugliese e lucano: Teresa Puntillo al flauto, Chiara Ratti al clarinetto basso, Beatrice Birardi alle percussioni, Maria Antonietta Cancellaro al pianoforte.
