In this episode of Hart2Heart, host Dr. Mike Hart dissects the science of aging and how to slow it down by optimizing cellular health. He breaks down two key strategies: autophagy and senolysis. Autophagy, the body's process of clearing out damaged cells, can be activated through fasting, cold plunges, sauna therapy, and high-intensity interval training. Dr. Hart also shares key supplements that promote autophagy. Senolysis focuses on eliminating ‘zombie' cells, damaged cells, that contribute to aging and inflammation. Dr. Hart explains how this process can be enhanced through similar lifestyle strategies and specific supplements like fisetin and quercetin. After much research:Cancer lovesAcid food,- this means meat, fish, cocked food… No OxygenSugar1. Cancer and other diseases need an acid environment from PH5.5… And that comes true for all meat/fish eaters! Their PH level is below Ph 5.5An acid environment promotes yeast and all fungus. So, the more acidic your body is, the easier it becomes for cancer to grow and spread.A healthy body typically has a PH level of around 7.4 which is slightly alkaline.Just make a test by yourself and check your urine with Litmus paper…We need to alkalize the body. Eat alkaline food like fresh unprocessed, uncooked fruits and vegetables…This means a plant-based diet without processed food like vegetable oil, sugar, trans fat, and meat prevents and can heal cancer.Eat only unprocessed, gluten-free, whole grains, like brown rice, quinoa, flax seeds, and millet at least 90 grams daily.Tumors are harmless until they get a blood supply. That is called Tumor angiogenesis…And when they hijack the angiogenesis system they get from the blood oxygen and nutrients. From a 2mm size, they can grow within 2 weeks 16000 times.Food that is anti-androgenic cuts the blood supply from the cancer- or tumor cells and starves so the cancer.1. Green tea because it contains catechins and that is anti-androgenic.And even it:Lower inflammationBoost immune systemDon't prepare green tea with boiling water, first, it doesn't taste delicious, and second, you destroy the catechins! How to make healthy green tea?Put hot water 70-80 Celsius over loose tea leaves and let it cool down and then it produces the catechins or EGCG and only then can it be beneficial. When using teabags, shake them in the hot water. Consistent daily consumption of matcha or green tea can help maintain high levels of catechins in your body.Drink only 2-3 cups of green tea or matcha daily, because you would take in too much caffeine. The most catechins from the green tea you gain, when you let the green tea leaves soak 30 minutes in 80Celsius hot water.2. KaleCauliflower, Brussels sprouts,All kinds of KaleBecause inside is sulforaphane they boost immune systemLower inflammation Are anti-Androgenic Broccoli sprouts have the most sulforaphane and 100 times more sulforaphane than Broccoli. The broccoli stem 2 times more than the top.3. Papaya lowers the risk of lung cancer. The red color papaya contains carotenoids Are anti-inflammatoryanti-Androgenic 4. Purple potatoes (with purple flesh), and red potatoes (with orange to reddish flesh) you can even eat them raw when you ground them or put them in an electric blender, -delicious. They're also easier to cook and you can add them to any meal. They contain anthocyaninAre anti-inflammatoryAnti-Androgenic has Vitamin A and C Kills cancer stem cells.5. Pomegranates packed with bio actives like ellagitanninsanti-Androgenic Stimulates the lower Colon to produce mucus and helps healthy gut bacteria. 6. Garlic, Ginger, and Turmeric are anti-androgenic and kill cancer cells.7. Legumes like lima beans, lentils, soybeans...8. Lemons9. A stem cell is a reserve cell that can become any cell you need. Stem cell research has shown positive results for people with fibrosis of the heart, liver fibrosis, and damaged brain cells. Stem cells can also be beneficial for the following: •Stimulating new cartilage in the joints •Autoimmune conditions •Rejuvenating skin cells •Cancer Here's how to keep your stem cell population at the highest level. 1. Fasting Prolonged fasting can boost stem cells naturally. If you can fast for 72 hours, you can boost stem cell production primarily for the gastrointestinal tract, brain, and immune system. 2. Exercise Intense exercise is the best way to boost stem cells for your muscles and brain. Exercise also stimulates BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which allows you to make new nerve and brain cells. 3. Deep sleep Sleep increases melatonin, which stimulates stem cell regeneration in your brain. Sleep also increases immune and cardiovascular stem cells. 4. Green tea Green tea contains the phytonutrient EGCG, which has potent anti-inflammatory properties and can increase stem cells for your brain and liver. 5. Omega-3 fatty acids Decreasing inflammation can boost stem cell production. Omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory and can increase stem cells for your bones, cartilage, brain, and skin. 6. Vitamin D Vitamin D and the sun help maintain blood stem cells that are involved with the immune system. Vitamin D increases new immune cells, prevents the exhaustion of stem cells, and can even increase longevity. 7. Cold therapy The cold stimulates brown fat stem cells, which support muscle repair and the mitochondria, decrease inflammation, and increase blood flow. Barriers to stem cell production include: •Inflammation •Stress •Lack of sleep •Junk food •Alcohol •Smoking •Pollution Our normal cells have at least 50 genes that help cope with dehydration. Cancer cells have none of these genes. This is why dry fasting may be destructive to cancer cells.
And again, you may not be a competitive athlete, but you're an athlete of life, right? Now it's going to make you look better. You're going to be stronger, faster. You're going to have more endurance, which is wonderful. But it doesn't mean now that you've achieved that hour of work, even if it's an hour and a half that the rest of the day, you can sit on the train or in your car, go home, and sit and watch TV. You have to be active even if you get your workout in.” (17:21 | Dr. Jim Stoppani) • “We're now realizing that science is showing that strength training is so critical for longevity. Because what happens as we age? We get sarcopenia. We start losing muscle mass. That's when our quality of life starts to go downhill. You're getting frail, you're getting weak. And the only way to prevent that is with strength training.” (22:25 | Dr. Jim Stoppani) • “We need to stop thinking of creatine as this muscle builder. It's one of the most critical energy molecules that almost every cell in the body is going to use, particularly the nervous system, not just the muscle cells.” (38:07 | Dr. Jim Stoppani) • “I think everybody should consider protein and creatine, but before you start worrying about getting beta alanine for performance or EGCG for health, what does your diet look like? You can't out-supplement a poor diet. Your diet is the foundation, and supplements are just additions to support it. The diet needs to be solid. You need to make sure you're getting enough protein, quality healthy fats, and quality carbs and fiber. Then, worry about the supplementation.” (01:00:24 | Dr. Jim Stoppani) Links Connect with Dr. Jim Stoppani: https://www.instagram.com/jimstoppani/ https://www.instagram.com/jymsupps/ https://www.jimstoppani.com/?v=2 https://jymsupplementscience.com/ SideKick Tool: https://bit.ly/4a6CqJS Movemate: Award-Winning Active Standing Board https://shorturl.at/egkA1 Promo Code: DRA15 15% off Flux Footwear Coupon Code: drandrewfix 10% off https://flux.rfrl.co/dyq8r LMNT: drinklmnt.com/physioroom RAD Roller: http://radroller.refr.cc/drandrewfix Revogreen https://revogreen.co/drandrewfix HYDRAGUN https://bit.ly/43rAtnX Athletic Brewing: 20% off: https://athleticbrewing.rfrl.co/vrmx8 20% off: ANDREWF20 Connect with Physio Room: Website | https://physioroomco.com/ Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/physioroomco/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/physioroomco Andrew's Personal Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/drandrewfix/ Andrew's Personal Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/andrew.fix.9/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Acmella oleracea ("jambu") is sourced from Sardinia, Italy and rich in alkylamides mainly represented by spilanthol. Its flowers are widely used in folk medicine to treat toothache due to tingling, numbness, and local anesthesia caused in the mouth. Acmella oleracea has been shown to be active in fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) inhibition the enzyme responsible for the degradation of fatty acid amides and cannabinoid type 2 (CB2) activation. There are almost 100 studies suggesting the supportive potential for anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and analgesic effects of Acmella. Studies reported in this review confirmed activities of Acmella, postulating that transcription factors of the nuclear factor-κB family (NF-κB) trigger the transcription iNOS and COX-2 and several other pro-inflammatory mediators, such as IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α. Curcumin, a natural polyphenolic compound derived from turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), has been well documented to exhibit various health benefits. There have been many claims on the health benefits of curcumin on neurological, cardiovascular, lung, metabolic, and liver function, mainly through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Despite its promising potential, the clinical application of curcumin has been limited due to its low bioavailability. To enhance curcumin absorption, we are the first to feature Theracurmin Super® 85X, a proprietary curcumin utilizing the latest technology that transforms standard curcumin into an amorphous structure. Theracurmin Super® 85X uses the latest technology to transform regular curcumin particles into a more bioavailable structure. This is done by splitting curcumin particles' crystal structure amorphous, therefore, making it easily absorbed and bioavailable to maximize its supportive potential. Tetrahydrocurcumin (4-HC) is the key bioactive derivative of curcumin, it's also given credibility as the engine behind all that curcumin brings to the table. With a newfound ability to extract and isolate the compound, research has even seen tetrahydrocurcumin outperform its parent compound in several tests of its capabilities. Researchers have also confirmed that 4-HC attenuated pro-inflammatory indicators like interleukin-1, interleukin-6, TNF-⍺, and prostaglandin E2. After reviewing the data, we found many advantages to infuse tetrahydrocurcumin as CurcuPrime® stacked with Theracurmin Super® 85X into Resolve+. Quercetin is a well-known studied dietary flavonoid ubiquitously present in various vegetables. Quercetin is known for its antioxidant activity in radical scavenging and anti-allergic properties characterized by stimulation of immune system, antiviral activity, inhibition of histamine release, decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokines, leukotrienes creation, and suppresses interleukin IL-4 production. Multiple studies have confirmed its supportive potential as an immune modulator and its ability to support a healthy inflammatory response. It can improve the Th1/Th2 balance, and restrain antigen specific IgE antibody formation However, chemical instability, poor water solubility and low bioavailability of quercetin greatly limit its applications which is why a phytosome technology which we feature in resolve is the preferred delivery system to overcome these limitations. This enhanced form of quercetin has been shown to be as much as 20 times better absorbed than other quercetin options. Casperome® boswellia phytosome is a potent extract made from the resin of Boswellia serrata trees and is also referred as Indian frankincense. Boswellia extracts have been demonstrated to be effective in the management of various inflammatory response functions including those that occur in the bowel, joints, bones, respiratory airways and in the brain. The mechanism of action that involves the modulation of the natural inflammatory response both acting on prostanoid synthesis (mPGE2S) and protein degradation (caspases), and transcription factors (Nf-κB). We have selected Casperome® which is a highly standardized in boswellic acids to match the natural composition of boswellia, formulated with phytosome technology to achieve optimized absorption and has been validated by over 10 human studies. One of the most common treatments for cancer is chemotherapy, which uses powerful drugs to target and kill cancer cells. Chemo can cause uncomfortable side effects such as nausea, fatigue, hair loss, and weakened immune function. Fortunately, there are ways to counter these side effects and support your body during chemo treatment. Compounds found in plants have a range of health benefits, including cancer prevention. Five specific phytonutrients that have shown strong chemo-preventative factors are sulforaphane, resveratrol, quercetin, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and allicin. They can be found in foods such as broccoli, grapes, green tea, and garlic. Magnesium deficiency has also been linked to cachexia, a condition where the body loses tissue and becomes weak. This can be especially dangerous for cancer patients who are already struggling with weight loss and fatigue due to their illness. Selenium plays a crucial role in immune function. If you are undergoing chemo or have cancer, you may want to supplement with 200 to 400 micrograms of selenium daily. Intermittent fasting, prolonged fasting, and exercise are powerful tools in reducing chemo side effects. Cold therapy, such as ice baths, has also been found to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Lastly, vitamin D has been shown to play a crucial role in strengthening the immune system. If you have cancer, it's recommended that you take high doses of vitamin D, with a target level of at least 120 nanograms per milliliter of blood. Remember to always consult with your doctor before making any changes to your diet or exercise routine while undergoing chemotherapy. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Anonymous: Hi Dr Cabral, can you advise on how best to recover from stimulant laxative dependencies, or just dependencies on laxatives in general, even if someone is eating right? thanks Lara: Hi, dr. C.. I'm trying not to cook with oil at all and add it in the end (olive, and even a bit of coconut oil to kitchari for example).. but all recipes start with oil in the pan.. then adding onions or spices.. am I not getting the same out of spices if I just put them in a bit of water instead of oil? I really feel like cooking with oil isn't as healthy as adding it in the end on a plate when foods not piping hot anymore.. Also, so far haven't found a good alternative to nonstick pans yet.. listened to your shows on the subject.. we bought a cast iron pan but how to use it properly ? Especially if I don't want to use oil to cook on it? Thank you so much Lara: Hi, me again.. :) Have you ever talked about wild teasel and it's tincture? Here in Europe it's used to combat borelia bacteria (Lyme disease, especially if it was never diagnosed but the bacteria has been in the body for years wreaking havoc).. I know most of your products are based on herbs.. what do you think about using wild teasel for getting rid of borelia? Thank you, you are amazing and I am so grateful to have found you.. Oh, almost forgot.. found out about borelia at a bioresonance full body diagnostics.. I asked her in the end how my candida, parasites and heavy metals were, not telling her I was doing your protocols from October until now.. she said that strangely, none of those are a problem (considering other people have them higher).. so, thank you for developing them! Danyelle: Hi Stephen! I would just like to say you are very inspiring and your transparency definitely sets you apart from a lot of people in this industry. I was curious about your thoughts on Celsius energy drink. I am aware of the artificial sweetener Sucralose in it but, what are your thoughts regarding the message they have. They say the green tea with EGCG, ginger, and guarantee seeds turn on thermogenesis and boosts metabolic rate. I usually drink it while I am still faster before my workout and wanted to hear your thoughts (I am 23 years old so I have been able to get away with it this far). I bet a lot of people are curious because Celsius has been a huge rise in the fitness industry and know a lot of people that consume it under the same circumstances. Thanks! (: Luis: Hi Dr Cabral, Would you know if are there any known determents to having a single parathyroid gland removed due to an adenoma? The other 3 should be able compensate for the loss of 1 so there should be no harm from the available literature I've read. Thanks Thank you for tuning into today's Cabral HouseCall and be sure to check back tomorrow where we answer more of our community's questions! - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/2794 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? Prospects Of Anti-Aging Supplements For 2023 And Beyond Click Here for a FREE 15 min Zoom Consultation With Brad: Dr. Michael Turner - Integrative Medicine Physician www.drturner.substack.com In this podcast episode, host Brad Williams from Over 40 Fitness Hacks interviews Dr. Michael Turner, an Integrative Medicine expert, on the topic of anti-aging supplements in 2023. Dr. Turner begins by explaining the importance of understanding the physiological factors driving the aging process. He introduces the concept of telomeres, which are protective caps on the end of DNA strands. Telomeres naturally shorten with each cell division, eventually causing cells to stop dividing. Dr. Turner then highlights an anti-aging supplement called "Gotu Kola," which has the ability to modify telomere length and help maintain their integrity. This supplement is particularly beneficial for promoting longevity. The conversation shifts to mitochondrial health, emphasizing the significance of well-functioning mitochondria as the powerhouses of cells. Dr. Turner mentions high-intensity exercise as a key strategy to optimize mitochondrial health. Additionally, he discusses the role of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) as a supplement that enhances mitochondrial function, boosts energy production throughout the body, and serves as an antioxidant. He also notes that CoQ10 can benefit various organ systems and individuals with conditions like chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. The podcast then delves into the importance of DNA repair in the context of aging and cancer risk. Dr. Turner explains that DNA constantly sustains damage and relies on repair mechanisms to prevent cancerous growth. FOXO genes play a crucial role in promoting DNA repair, and he outlines lifestyle practices like intermittent fasting to stimulate their activity. Dr. Turner introduces EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), a component found in green tea, as a supplement that directly stimulates FOXO gene activity, thus supporting DNA repair. Brad shares his experience with matcha green tea and EGCG supplementation, noting that EGCG supplements can be a convenient alternative for individuals who experience digestive discomfort with green tea. Overall, the podcast provides valuable insights into anti-aging supplements, telomere maintenance, mitochondrial health, and DNA repair, offering listeners practical information to support their holistic approach to longevity and well-being in 2023. Today we're going to talk about the potential benefits of sulforaphane for autism. Sulforaphane is a natural chemical in cruciferous vegetables and other vegetables. Sulforaphane can be beneficial for other conditions as well, including: • H. pylori • HIV • Hepatitis C and B • SARS-CoV-2 People with autism have a low antioxidant capacity, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. One of the lowered antioxidants is glutathione. Lowered glutathione is also involved in conditions other than autism, including: • COPD • Alzheimer's • Parkinson's • Cancer • Autoimmune diseases • ADHD • Bipolar disorder • Schizophrenia • H. pylori • HIV A certain protein called Nrf2 is the master regulator of all of the antioxidants your body makes, including glutathione. This protein also activates detoxification enzymes, helps regulate T helper cells, and helps protect against oxidation and oxidative stress. Things that inhibit Nrf2: • High-sugar diets • Lack of sleep • Stress • Glyphosate • Alcohol • Smoking • Toxins • Medications • Infections • Gene alterations Things that trigger Nrf2: 1. Sulforaphane 2. Selenium, cysteine, glutamine, and tryptophan 3. NAC 4. Glutathione 5. Prolonged fasting 6. Cruciferous and sulfur vegetables 7. Alpha-lipoic acid 8. Vitamins A, C, D, E, and zinc 9. If your back has been hurting and you haven't been able to find relief, or you have chronic recurrent arthritic pain, it may be time to explore new options. On this episode of Back Talk Doc, Dr. Sanjiv Lakhia hosts a solo episode to reframe how patients should be thinking about osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease. He proposes that patients move away from thinking of these conditions as the inevitable result of wear and tear, and instead look at them through the lens of metabolic dysfunction. Using a framework focusing on food and supplementation options, Dr. Lakhia discusses the connection between what we put in our bodies and the pain that we feel. Two of the biggest culprits for inflammation in the North American diet are gluten and dairy. Studies have shown that removing these from your diet can reduce back pain. Dr. Lakhia discusses the benefits of adding collagen, EGCG, melatonin, and a botanical nutrient combination that uses cannabidiol and a fatty acid known as palmitoylethanolamide (PEA). Each supplement is backed by research and has shown promise for treating back pain. “I think those are some really exciting options to consider beyond the typical thought process of just vitamin D, turmeric, and fish oil,” says Dr. Lakhia. For those interested in learning more, check out the 14 Day Challenge that is available on Dr. Lakhia's website.

In this episode, we're working on our element of Resilience and exploring the second Root of Resilience known as managing energy. The Roots of Resilience were laid out in one of Dr. Emmons book, "The Chemistry of Calm." We'll work through this foundational aspect of resilience, focusing on how we can keep our resilience tank more full by returning to our natural rhythms of rest and activity to help us feel more refreshed, engaged, and connected. We'll also learn about some "energy thieves" and how you can overcome those thieves to reclaim your natural energy cycles. Videos: How One Company Destroyed An Entire Country - Moon Green tea EGCG backed to prevent life-threatening ‘artery explosion' Kyoto University, August 25, 2022 Drinking polyphenol-packed green tea could help to prevent a deadly condition in the body's main artery, according to new research in rats. Writing in the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the Japanese research team reported that polyphenols from the nation's favourite drink, green tea, could offer benefits in preventing abdominal aneurysm expansion (AAA) – a serious condition characterised by destruction of the body's main artery. The new study from the Kyoto University team found that rats fed a green tea extract containing epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) developed AAA less frequently than rats that were not given the polyphenol. "The type of polyphenol found in green tea [EGCG] has recently been shown to regenerate elastin, an essential protein that gives the artery its stretchy, yet sturdy, texture," explains Setozaki. "Considering that abdominal arterial aneurysms are caused by inflammation and the degradation of elastin components in the arterial wall, we thought drinking green tea may show promise for treatment." The results confirmed that EGCG blocked AAA progression in the rat model by preserving the aortic thickness and elastin content through regeneration of elastin. “Regular green tea consumption might be advantageous for patients with a small AAA or as a prophylactic strategy for AAA,” the team suggested. Lower potassium intake linked to premature mortality risk University of California at Irvine, September 2 2022. A study reported on August 26, 2022, in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found a higher risk of dying during a median 5.8 to 7.8-year follow-up period in association with a lower intake of potassium. The risk was similar between individuals with normal or impaired kidney function. “In healthy adults, higher dietary potassium intake is recommended given that potassium-rich foods are major sources of micronutrients, antioxidants, and fiber,” Yoko Narasaki of the University of California, Irvine and colleagues explained. “Yet among patients with advanced kidney dysfunction, guidelines recommend dietary potassium restriction given concerns about hyperkalemia [elevated blood potassium—ed.] leading to malignant arrhythmias and mortality.” The investigation included 37,893 continuous participants in the National Health and Nutrition Education Survey (NHANES, 1999–2014) whose potassium intake was calculated from 24-hour dietary recall interviews. Mortality data was collected through the end of 2014. Among subjects with impaired kidney function, those whose potassium intake was among the lowest one-third had a risk of dying during a median 5.8-year follow-up period that was 18% greater than those among the top third. For participants with normal kidney function, mortality risk for those among the lowest third was 17% higher during a median 7.8 years of follow-up. High intake of potassium primarily from plant sources was associated with lower mortality during follow-up in comparison with a low intake of the mineral from animal-dominant sources. In the group with impaired kidney function, a 24% greater risk of mortality during follow-up occurred among those who consumed a low amount of potassium paired with a high amount of protein compared to high potassium/high protein. “Lower dietary potassium scaled to energy intake was associated with higher mortality, irrespective of kidney function,” the authors concluded. “Further studies are needed to elucidate pathways linking potassium intake and co-existing dietary factors with survival in populations with and without chronic kidney disease.” People who lack compassion for the environment are also less emotional in general University of Michigan, September 2, 2022 People who respond less emotionally to images of damage to the environment are also less emotional and empathic in general, according to a new University of Michigan study. Differences in political ideology can limit policy adjustments that address climate change. Researchers and practitioners often raise concern by appealing to people's empathy. However, some people appear less emotionally impacted by environmental destruction—particularly those who are more ideologically conservative and less pro-environmental, the study showed. In a series of online experiments in the U.S., psychology professor Stephanie Preston examined the emotional responses of more than 600 people in a variety of contexts. People not concerned when viewing pictures of damage to the environment—such as oil spills on fire in a gulf—also did not feel bad about other images including crying babies, officers in distress, injured athletes, wounded soldiers and even moldy food. Consistent with this lack of contagious distress, more "impassive" people said that they felt less empathy for those in daily life and were less pro-environmental and less awed by nature. This group also responded less to positive images such as happy babies, ice cream and stacks of money, the research showed. The study's results suggest that some people's lack of concern for the environment may not be particularly political or reflect a specific disinterest in the environment. It is instead a characteristic of their broader emotional palette, Preston said. "Given that our sense of risk and decisions are strongly guided by emotions, more impassive people are less inclined to dedicate resources to this slowly building crisis," she said. Amino acid supplements may boost vascular endothelial function in older adults: Study University of Alabama, August 28, 2022 A combination of HMB (a metabolite of leucine), glutamine and arginine may improve vascular function and blood flow in older people, says a new study. Scientists from the University of Alabama report that a supplement containing HMB (beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate), glutamine and arginine (Juven by Abbott Nutrition) increased flow-mediated dilation (FMD - a measure of blood flow and vascular health) by 27%, whereas no changes were observed in the placebo group. However, the researchers did not observe any changes to markers of inflammation, including high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) “Our results indicate that 6 months of dietary supplementation with HMB, glutamine and arginine had a positive impact on vascular endothelial function in older adults,” wrote the researchers, led by Dr Amy Ellis in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition . “These results are clinically relevant because reduced endothelial-dependent vasodilation is a known risk factor for cardiovascular diseases Break A Sweat For Your Brain: Exercise Protects Aging Synapses University of California at San Francisco, September 2, 2022 Scientists at UC San Francisco have found that the brains of physically active elderly adults contain more of a specific type of protein known to enhance the connections between neurons and help maintain healthy cognition. Importantly, autopsies show this held up even among people whose brains contained high levels of toxic proteins associated with Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases. “Our work is the first that uses human data to show that synaptic protein regulation is related to physical activity and may drive the beneficial cognitive outcomes we see,” says lead study author Kaitlin Casaletto, PhD, an assistant professor of neurology, in a university release. “Maintaining the integrity of these connections between neurons may be vital to fending off dementia, since the synapse is really the site where cognition happens,” Dr. Casaletto adds. “Physical activity—a readily available tool—may help boost this synaptic functioning.” The analysis revealed older adults who had remained active displayed higher levels of proteins that make the exchange of information between neurons possible. Moreover, researchers admit it was surprising to see the beneficial effects extend beyond just the hippocampus — the mind's memory center — to additional brain regions associated with cognitive function. “It may be that physical activity exerts a global sustaining effect, supporting and stimulating healthy function of proteins that facilitate synaptic transmission throughout the brain,” Dr. Honer explains. Fermented soymilk isoflavones could cut UV damage Yakult Central Institute (Japan), August 30, 2022 Consuming fermented soymilk products may help protect against ultraviolet radiation damage by increasing the number of isoflavone compounds in the body, according to a study on mice. Researchers from the Yakult Central Institute in Japan tested female hairless mice, feeding groups of six soymilk (SM) or fermented soymilk (FSM), with additional untreated and control groups. They found mice fed on FSM showed less skin reddening and skin thickening compared to those fed on regular soymilk. The researchers found that isoflavone concentrations in the blood and UV-exposed skin were significantly higher in the FSM group compared to the SM mice. They had previously found isoflavone absorption is higher for subjects fed aglycone-enriched FSM compared to glucoside-enriched SM. We believe that the higher delivery of genistein and daidzein to the serum and dorsal skin is due to differences in effectiveness between FSM and SM,” they added. “Because of their similar structures, isoflavones exert oestrogen-like activity and can protect against hormone-dependent diseases. We believe that the oestrogen-like activity of isoflavones from FSM partly compensates for the oestrogen depletion in [ovariectomised] hairless mice, preventing the photodamage induced by UVB irradiation,” they added.

Why You Should Have Faith Plandemic – Indoctrination Green tea compound shows promise for treating rheumatoid arthritis Washington State University August 25, 2022 A compound found in green tea could be an effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, according to the results of a new study. Green tea being poured into a cup] EGCG – a compound found in green tea – could help treat rheumatoid arthritis, new research suggests. In the journal Arthritis and Rheumatology, researchers from Washington State University (WSU) in Spokane reveal how the compound – called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) – reduced ankle swelling in a mouse model of the disease. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a disease that affects the joints of the body, most commonly the joints of the hands, feet, wrists, elbows knees and ankles. In RA, the immune system mistakingly attacks the synovial tissues surrounding the joints, causing inflammation, swelling and pain. This can cause damage to the cartilage and bone. Current treatments for RA include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), corticosteroids and JAK inhibitors. But study leader Salah-uddin Ahmed, of the WSU College of Pharmacy, notes that some of these treatments are expensive, reduce immune system activity and can be unsuitable for long-term use. In their study, Ahmed and colleagues suggest that the compound EGCG may be a promising alternative to current treatments for RA. EGCG targets key signaling protein to reduce RA inflammation EGCG is a chemical compound that belongs to a class of flavanols known as catechins. After giving EGCG to mouse models of RA for 10 days, the team noticed that treatment with the compound led to a significant reduction in ankle swelling. The researchers found that EGCG reduces the activity of TAK1 – a key signaling protein through which pro-inflammatory cytokines transmit their signals to trigger the inflammation and tissue damage found in RA. What is more, the team says that EGCG reduced inflammation in RA without interfering with other cellular functions – unlike some current medications for the disease. According to Ahmed, their study suggests the green tea compound may be highly effective against RA. Antioxidant-rich pomegranate juice may aid blood sugar management for diabetics: Human data Jordan University of Science and Technology, August 20, 2022 Daily consumption of pomegranate juice may help control blood sugar levels in type-2 diabetics, as well as improving the function of beta cells in the pancreas, say data from a human trial. Scientists from the Jordan University of Science and Technology report that pomegranate juice at a dose of 1.5 mL per kg of body weight (or 105 mL for a 70 kg human) was associated with reductions in fasting glucose levels in type-2 diabetics. “Studying the effects of pomegranate consumption (in a juice form) on the reduction of blood glucose levels in type-2 diabetes patients could lead to a dietary approach to control this disease,” they added. “Since there are many herbs and fruits that are easily available and of value in controlling this disease, this study may contribute to a better understanding and improved management of type 2 diabetes by the individual.” To investigate this, they recruited 85 people with type-2 diabetes and assigned them to receive 1.5 mL of the juice per kg of body weight. Blood sugar and insulin levels, and beta cell function were assessed three hours after ingestion. (Beta-cells are found in the pancreas and their primary function is to store and release insulin.) Results showed that pomegranate juice was associated with significantly lower fasting glucose levels (8.5 mmol/L) compared with the control participants (9.44 mmol/L). However, this result was an average for the whole cohort and about 20% of the participants did not experience this benefit. Going with the flow: Study shows canals and rivers help boost your mood King's College London, August 31, 2022 Researchers report that the combination of blue and green space with wildlife, has a greater impact on well-being than spending time in an environment that is characterized by only green space. The researchers used Urban Mind, a smartphone-based app, to collect thousands of real time audits about participants' location and mental well-being. Results from this first of its kind study showed positive associations between visits to canals and rivers and mental well-being, as well as a positive experience for feelings of safety and social inclusion relative to all other types of environments (such as indoors, or outside in an urban environment, or near green spaces). Andrea Mechelli, Professor of Early Intervention in Mental Health, King's College London, said, “Canals and rivers contain not only water but also an abundance of trees and plants, which means their capacity to improve mental well-being is likely to be due to the multiple benefits associated with both green and blue spaces. Canals and rivers also provide homes to a range of wildlife, and we know from other research that there is a positive association between encountering wildlife and mental well-being. Taken collectively, these findings provide an evidence base for what we thought about water and well-being and support the proposal that visits to canals and rivers could become part of social prescribing schemes, playing a role in supporting mental health.” The study found that visiting canals and rivers was associated with a greater improvement in mental well-being, and this relationship was still present when accounting for individual variation due to age, gender, education, ethnicity, and a diagnosis of a mental health condition. People also reported continued improvements in their mental well-being for up to 24 hours after the visit had taken place.”The powerful mix of blue, green and wildlife-rich space shows that although built for industry, repurposed canals are actually amongst our most important places of health and well-being in our towns and cities. Men, people over 65 sleep better when they have access to nature University of Illinois College of Agricultural, August 24, 2022 Men and persons age 65 and older who have access to natural surroundings, whether it's the green space of a nearby park or a sandy beach and an ocean view, report sleeping better, according to a new University of Illinois study published in Preventive Medicine. In the study, Grigsby-Toussaint worked with both U of I researchers and scientists from the New York University School of Medicine. The team used data from the CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, which surveyed 255,171 representative U.S. adults, to learn whether there was an association between self-reported days of insufficient sleep and access to green space. The team also used a USDA index that scores the country's geographical areas for their natural amenities, using hours of sunlight, which is important in regulating a person's circadian rhythm, and temperature. In response to the survey question about sleep quality in the last month, the researchers found that the most common answer was that respondents had slept poorly for less than one week. “Interestingly, though, across the entire sample, individuals reporting 21 to 29 days of insufficient sleep consistently had lower odds of access to green space and natural amenities compared to those reporting less than one week,” she said. For men, the relationship between sleep and exposure to green space was much stronger than for women. And males and females 65 and over found nature to be a potent sleep aid, she added. Grigsby-Toussaint noted that living near green landscapes is associated with higher levels of physical activity and that exercise in turn predicts beneficial sleep patterns. But men appeared to benefit much more from their natural surroundings. The researcher speculated that women may take less advantage of nearby natural settings out of concern for their safety, but she added that more research is needed. New study links ultra-processed foods and colorectal cancer in men Tufts University and Harvard University, August 31 ,2022 For many Americans, the convenience of pre-cooked and instant meals may make it easy to overlook the less-than-ideal nutritional information, but a team led by researchers at Tufts University and Harvard University hope that will change after recently discovering a link between the high consumption of ultra-processed foods and an increased risk of colorectal cancer. In a study published in the BMJ, researchers found that men who consumed high rates of ultra-processed foods were at 29% higher risk for developing colorectal cancer—the third most diagnosed cancer in the United States—than men who consumed much smaller amounts. They did not find the same association in women. “We started out thinking that colorectal cancer could be the cancer most impacted by diet compared to other cancer types,” said Lu Wang, the study's lead author and a postdoctoral fellow at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts. “Processed meats, most of which fall into the category of ultra-processed foods, are a strong risk factor for colorectal cancer. Ultra-processed foods are also high in added sugars and low in fiber, which contribute to weight gain and obesity, and obesity is an established risk factor for colorectal cancer.” The study analyzed responses from over 200,000 participants—159,907 women and 46,341 men—across three large prospective studies which assessed dietary intakeand were conducted over more than 25 years. The analyses revealed differences in the ways that men and women consume ultra-processed foods and the prospective associated cancer risk. Out of the 206,000 participants followed for more than 25 years, the research team documented 1,294 cases of colorectal cancer among men, and 1,922 cases among women. The team found the strongest association between colorectal cancer and ultra-processed foods among men come from the meat, poultry, or fish-based, ready-to-eat products. “These products include some processed meats like sausages, bacon, ham, and fish cakes. This is consistent with our hypothesis,” Wang said. The team also found higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, like soda, fruit-based beverages, and sugary milk-based beverages, is associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer in men. However, not all ultra-processed foods are equally harmful with regard to colorectal cancer risk. “We found an inverse association between ultra-processed dairy foods like yogurt and colorectal cancer risk among women,” said co-senior author Fang Fang Zhang, a cancer epidemiologist and interim chair of the Division of Nutrition Epidemiology and Data Science at the Friedman School. Overall, there was not a link between ultra-processed food consumption and colorectal cancer risk among women. It's possible that the composition of the ultra-processed foods consumed by women could be different than that from men. “Foods like yogurt can potentially counteract the harmful impacts of other types of ultra-processed foods in women,” Zhang said. 8 Benefits of Pine Bark Extract for Your Brain GreenMedInfo, August 31, 2022 Our brains can be harmed by many factors such as disease, stress from the environment, physical injuries or natural aging but pine bark extract may be one key to a healthier brain Pine bark extract (PE), trade name Pycnogenol (pronounced “pig-nah-gen-all”), has many beneficial properties such as being anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and neuroprotective. It can help with memory, cognition, inattention, hyperactivity, mood, thinking and various symptoms of brain injuries, aging and neurological diseases. Fights Inflammation and Protects the Brain In a systematic review and meta-analysis of Pycnogenol supplementation on C-reactive protein (CRP) — a marker of oxidative stress — researchers examined five trials including 324 participants. Pycnogenol supplementation had a significant effect in reducing CRP and demonstrated a strong anti-inflammatory effect.[i] In a study of gerbils, pine bark extract was administered at 100 milligrams (mg) per kilogram (kg) once a day for seven days before the brain was submitted to a brain ischemic injury. The PE treatment markedly inhibited the death of neurons in the brain, significantly decreased the pro-inflammatory cytokines — interleukin 1β and tumor necrosis factor α — and showed a strong activation effect on anti-inflammatory cytokines of interleukin 4 (IL-4) and interleukin 13 (IL-13). Pine bark protected the brain and decreased inflammation.[ii] Improves Attention, Memory, Executive Functions and Mood in Healthy People In a study over eight weeks, Pycnogenol supplementation improved sustained attention, memory, executive functions and mood ratings in 53 healthy students compared to an equivalent control group.[iii] In a trial of 60 healthy professionals from 35 to 55 years old, half of the participants supplemented with Pycnogenol of 50 mg three times a day for 12 weeks in combination with a controlled health plan — regular sleep, balanced meals and daily exercise — and the other half followed only the health plan as the control group. PE significantly improved mood by 16%, mental performance by 9%, attention by 13% and memory by 4%, and reduced oxidative stress by 30%, outperforming all results of the control group.[iv] Prevents Brain Aging and Cognitive Decline Brain aging is a complex process involving changes in the brain's structure, neuron activity and biochemical profile that has been linked to age-associated variations in cognitive function. Increased oxidative stress may also be an important factor related to reduced cognition in older people. In a systematic review of over 100 research trials and animal studies, the antioxidant Pycnogenol significantly improved cognitive function after chronic administration.[v] Improves Cognition and Stress in the Mildly Impaired or Highly Oxidative Stressed Eighty-seven healthy subjects with mild cognitive impairment scores were included in a trial with one group given standard management (SM) and the other half given Pycnogenol supplements for two months. The median increase in mild impairment scores was 18% with Pycnogenol compared to 2.48% in the SM group, largely due to its effects on oxidative stress levels.[vi] In a study of 88 healthy patients ages 55 to 70 who had high oxidative stress, half were supplemented with 100 mg per day of Pycnogenol for 12 months and the other half were the control group followed as a reference point for a year. Those in the pine bark group had significantly improved cognitive function scores, attention and mental performance and lowered oxidative stress levels compared to those in the reference group.[vii] Increases Cognitive Function and Helps Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease Researchers studied 43 Parkinson's disease (PD) patients who had been diagnosed at least one year before the trial. The condition was considered “mild,” with minimal progression. The standard management (SM) for PD — carbidopa/levodopa — was used in a similar-sized reference group of PD subjects for comparison purposes. The trial subjects were supplemented with Pycnogenol of 150 mg per day along with SM for a period of four weeks. Cognitive function was significantly higher with the Pycnogenol group. Target symptoms including tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia — slow or impaired movements in limbs — and speech were improved in the PE group compared to the control group. Oxidative stress was also significantly lower in the pine bark group at four weeks.[viii] Enhances Memory and Prevents Harmful Plaque and Tau Buildup in Alzheimer's Disease In Alzheimer's disease (AD), the release of amyloid-beta (Aβ) is a marker. Aβ aggregates into oligomers, then plaques, which induce inflammatory responses, synapse loss and misfolding of tau, a second hallmark of AD. Accumulation of tau misfolding leads to tangles in the brain and neuron cell death impacting brain synapses in a pattern of progression closely related to cognitive decline, which can happen years before memory loss symptoms even appear.[ix] Pycnogenol significantly decreased the number of plaques in both pre-onset and post-onset treatment paradigms and improved spatial memory in the pre-onset treatment only in an AD-induced mouse model.[x] In an in vitro study of AD-induced animals, pine bark — Oligopin — prevented and halted the progression of AD preclinically by inhibiting oligomer formation of not only Aβ1-40 and Aβ1-42, but also tau in vitro.[xi] Reduces Inflammation and Improves Outcomes for Traumatic Brain Injuries In a scientific trial of 67 traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU), the intervention group received 150 mg of the PE supplement Oligopin with enteral nutrition — tube feeding through stomach or intestine — for 10 days while the control group received a placebo.[xii] Pine bark supplementation significantly decreased inflammatory biomarkers of IL-6, IL-1β and CRP compared to the control group after 10 days. In addition, pine bark reduced clinical scores for acute physiology and chronic health evaluation as well as sequential organ failure. The Nutric score — a way to measure if a patient is under-nourished and at critical risk of dying[xiii] — was reduced compared to the control group as well. Overall, the survival rate was 15% higher in the pine bark group compared to the placebo group. PE supplementation for TBI patients in ICUs reduced inflammation, improved their clinical status and malnutrition score and, thereby, reduced their mortality rate. Improves Attention, Focus, Thinking, Behavior and Antioxidant Levels in ADHD Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impulsivity, distractibility and hyperactivity. One of the factors associated with ADHD is oxidative stress. Pycnogenol consists of bioflavonoids, catechins, procyanidins and phenolic acids.[xiv] Pycnogenol acts as a powerful antioxidant stimulating certain enzymes, like superoxide dismutase (SOD) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), which can defend against oxidative stress. In the pathophysiology of ADHD, damage to adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine metabolism occurs in the brain. These changes can modify attention, thinking and acting.[xv] In a trial of 43 children ages 6 to 14 with ADHD, patients were administered Pycnogenol — 1 mg per kg of body weight every day — or a placebo of look-alike pills daily for a month. The PE group had a significant decrease in GSSG and a highly significant increase in GSH levels as well as improvement of GSH/GSSG ratio in comparison to the placebo group. The total antioxidant status (TAS) decreased in children with ADHD who took pine bark, showing a normalization of TAS in ADHD children.[xvii] In a crossover study of 20 children with ADHD, participants experienced two experimental units — four weeks of pine bark supplementation with 25 or 50 mg PE and four weeks with placebo supplementation — separated by two weeks of a washout period. PE supplementation caused a significant reduction in inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity measures.
Strawberries may fend off Alzheimer's Rush University Medical Center, July 28, 2022 Could strawberries as a snack or in your cereal, salads or smoothie help protect your brain from Alzheimer's? Maybe so, according to a new study from researchers at RUSH. RUSH researchers found that a bioactive compound found in strawberries called pelargonidin may be associated with fewer neurofibrillary tau tangles in the brain. Tau tangles are one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease, which is caused by abnormal changes with tau proteins that accumulate in the brain. The study was published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. "We suspect the anti-inflammatory properties of pelargonidin may decrease overall neuroinflammation, which may reduce cytokine production," said Dr. Julie Schneider, author of the study. Schneider is associate professor and neuropathologist in the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Among berries, strawberries are the most abundant source of pelargonidin. Florida Seaweed may Hold Promise as Protector Against Cancer University of Florida College of Pharmacy, July 24, 2022 Among all cancers, new cases of prostate cancer are the most prevalent in the United States. While there are numerous tips for preventing and even reversing prostate cancer, one new study suggests a seaweed found off the coast of Florida could hold the key to preventing this and other forms of cancer. The news potentially brings the U.S. closer to Asian countries in prostate cancer prevalence—countries that incidentally have high rates of seaweed consumption. Researchers with the University of Florida screened several different seaweeds, searching for one with the most cancer-protective promise. They found it in a common green algae known as sea lettuce. “We now have scientific evidence that this seaweed raises the body's antioxidant defense system and therefore might potentially prevent a number of diseases, including cancer,” said Hendrik Luesch, Ph.D., lead research and associate professor of medicinal chemistry in the UF College of Pharmacy. “This mechanism appears to be most relevant to prostate cancer.” “Antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables protect the body against these free radicals, mostly through a scavenging process of elimination. Rather than simply removing the damaging free radicals through this direct reaction, compounds in sea lettuce worked through an indirect mechanism, Luesch found. This process increases the levels of a suite of antioxidant enzymes and boosts antioxidants in cells, producing longer-lasting protection. Regulated by stretches of DNA called antioxidant response elements, the enzymes prevent oxidative damage and inflammation.” Luesch compares the possibilities of sea lettuce compounds to the proven benefits of sulforaphane in broccoli, an enzyme that works through similar methods to prevent damage from oxidative stress and cancer. Fast food diet before pregnancy can impact breast milk and baby's health, say scientists University of Cambridge, July 27, 2022 A diet high in sugar and fat such as burgers, fries and fizzy drinks can negatively affect a new mother's breast milk and baby's health even before the child is conceived. The new study using lab mice has found that even relatively short-term consumption of a fast food diet impacts women's health, reducing their ability to produce nutritional breast milk after giving birth. This can affect the newborn's well-being, as well as increasing the risk of both mother and child developing potentially fatal conditions such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes in later life. Even mothers who appear to be a healthy weight can be suffering from hidden issues such as a fatty liver—which may be seen in people who are overweight or obese—from eating a diet heavy in processed foods, which tend to be high in fat and sugar. This can lead to advanced scarring (cirrhosis) and liver failure. In this new study, a group of mice was fed a diet of processed high fat pellet with sweetened condensed milk for just three weeks before pregnancy, during the three-week pregnancy itself, and following birth. This diet was designed to mimic the nutritional content of a fast food burger, fries and sugary soft drink. The aim was to determine the impacts on fertility, fetus growth and neonatal outcomes. The researchers discovered that even a short-term high fat, high sugar diet impacted on the survival of the mice pups in the early period after birth, with an increased loss during the time the mother was feeding her offspring. Milk proteins are hugely important for newborn development but the quality was found to be poor in mouse mothers eating the high fat, high sugar diet. "They ended up with fatty livers, which is really dangerous for the mum, and there was altered formation of the placenta. The weight of the fetus itself wasn't affected. They seemed lighter, but it wasn't significant. But what was also apparent was that the nutrition to the fetus was changed in pregnancy. Then when we looked at how the mum may be supporting the baby after pregnancy, we found that her mammary gland development and her milk protein composition was altered, and that may have been the explanation for the greater health problems of the newborn pups." Meditation And Yoga Change Your DNA To Reverse Effects Of Stress, Study Shows Coventry University (UK), July 25, 2022 Many people participate in practices such as meditation and yoga because they help us relax. At least those are the immediate effects we feel. But much more is happening on a molecular level, reveal researchers out of Coventry University in England. Published in the journal Frontiers in Immunology, this new research examined 18 studies on mind-body interventions (MBIs). These include practices such as mindfulness meditation and yoga. Comprehensively, these studies encompassed 846 participants over 11 years. The new analysis reveals that MBIs result in molecular changes in the human body. Furthermore, researchers claim that these changes are beneficial to our mental and physical health. To elaborate, consider the effect that stress has on the body. When we are under stress, the body increases the production of proteins that cause cell inflammation. This is the natural effect of the body's fight-or-flight response. It is widely believed that inflammation in the body leads to numerous illnesses, including cancer. Moreover, scientists also deduct that a persistent inflammation is more likely to cause psychiatric problems. Unfortunately, many people suffer from persistent stress, therefore they suffer from pro-inflammatory gene expression. According to this new analysis out of Coventry, people that practice MBIs such as meditation and yoga can reverse pro-inflammatory gene expression. This results in a reduced risk of inflammation-related diseases and mental conditions. EGCG in Green Tea inhibits the growth of breast cancer cells Chonbuk National University School of Medicine (S Korea), July 21, 2022 According to news reporting originating in Chonbuk, South Korea, research stated, "Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major constituent of green tea, has potential as a treatment for a variety of diseases, including cancer. EGCG induces apoptosis and inhibits tumorigenesis through multiple signaling pathways in breast cancer cells. b-catenin signaling modulators could be useful in the prevention and therapy of breast cancer." Research from the Chonbuk National University School of Medicine states, "However, the precise anticancer effect of EGCG through the b-catenin signaling pathway in breast cancer is unclear. The present study investigated the association between b-catenin expression and clinicopathological factors of breast cancer patients, and the effect of EGCG on b-catenin expression in breast cancer cells. b-catenin expression was analyzed according to the clinicopathological factors of 74 patients with breast cancer. Western blot analysis revealed that b-catenin was expressed at higher levels in breast cancer tissue than in normal tissue. b-catenin expression was associated with lymph node metastasis, tumor-node-metastasis stage and estrogen receptor status. EGCG dsignificantly downregulated the expression of b-catenin, phosphorylated Akt and cyclin D1. The present results suggest that EGCG inhibits the growth of MDA-MB-231 cells through the inactivation of the b-catenin signaling pathway." According to the news reporters, the research concluded: "Based on these promising results, EGCG may be a potential treatment for triple negative breast cancer patients." Turmeric eye drops could treat glaucoma University College London, July 264, 2022 A derivative of turmeric could be used in eye drops to treat the early stages of glaucoma, finds a new study led by UCL and Imperial College London researchers. In the new Scientific Reports paper, the researchers report a new method to deliver curcumin, extracted from the yellow spice turmeric, directly to the back of the eye using eye drops, overcoming the challenge of curcumin's poor solubility. The research team found the eye drops can reduce the loss of retinal cells in rats, which is known to be an early sign of glaucoma. "Curcumin is an exciting compound that has shown promise at detecting and treating the neurodegeneration implicated in numerous eye and brain conditions from glaucoma to Alzheimer's disease, so being able to administer it easily in eye drops may end up helping millions of people," said the study's lead author, Professor Francesca Cordeiro. Curcumin has previously been shown to protect retinal ganglion cells when administered orally. For the current study, the researchers were seeking to find a more reliable method to deliver curcumin. Oral administration is difficult because curcumin has poor solubility, so it does not easily dissolve and get absorbed into the bloodstream, and would require people to take large amounts of tablets (up to 24 a day) that may cause gastrointestinal side effects. The team developed a novel nanocarrier, wherein the curcumin is contained within a surfactant combined with a stabiliser, both of which are known to be safe for human use and are already in existing eye products. The nanocarrier can be used in eye drops to deliver much higher loads of curcumin than other products in development, increasing the drug's solubility by a factor of almost 400,000, and localises the curcumin in the eyes instead of throughout the body. After twice-daily use of eye drops in the rats for three weeks, retinal ganglion cell loss was significantly reduced compared to matched controls, and the treatment was found to be well-tolerated with no signs of eye irritation or inflammation.

Episode Highlights [03:30] Breaking the Misconceptions about Arthritis Arthritis is more than a wear-and-tear condition; it's an inflammatory disease process. It is not limited to the elderly. The disease process can begin with minor injuries, even those sustained as a child. Arthritis is a combination of genetics and environmental factors triggered by trauma. [08:25] Arthritis as an Inflammatory Disease Process Arthritis is a disease process like neurodegenerative and cardiac illnesses. Our bodies follow a balanced way to deal with injuries. It releases the level of cytokines that set off the body's response to healing and recovery. Afterwards, cytokine levels fall, and anti-inflammatory proteins take over. The disease process begins during Imbalance in any part of the process. It can be started as too many cytokines lead to zombie cells and lack of autophagy. [12:20] General Approaches to Addressing Arthritis Turn off inflammatory cytokines through simple supplements like curcumin or epigallocatechin. Turning down the inflammatory response allows the injury to heal better. Inducing autophagy or knocking off the bad cells helps reduce injury as well. [13:36] Arthritis is a Preventable Disease Arthritis is a disease that should be given more attention, as it has a significant impact on people's quality of life. It is the primary cause of disability among people of working age. Arthritis is preventable to a large degree, despite genetics and other factors. [18:32] Current Orthopedic Treatments for Arthritis The focus in addressing arthritis is to treat the disease process. Steroid injections temporarily reduce inflammatory cytokines, but they also inhibit those that aid in healing. Arthroscopic surgery can provide immediate comfort. However, it can also inflict tears that can cause the rapid progression of arthritis. Back fusion can help cases of spinal instability. However, for degenerative discs, the long-term success rate of surgery is around 10% of those who undergo it. [24:09] Degenerative Disc Disease as an Inflammatory Disease Degenerative disc disease is an inflammatory disease caused by high levels of cytokines. This includes the nuclear factor kappa beta. The goal is to focus on the issues that cause disc destruction, such as elevated cytokine levels, rather than the disc itself. Ageing processes, like degeneration, should serve as a wake-up call to reconsider one's diet. This also includes reconsidering supplements, and exercise, as well as one's cardiovascular health. [27:18] Changing the Perspective about Arthritis People should be aware that arthritis begins in their 20s, similar to brain disorders, heart ailments, and cancers. All these immune and inflammatory diseases come down to curing ageing. We need to take proactive steps and opt for longevity instead of a mechanical standard of care. Opting for the ‘expensive' care earlier will save you time, stress, and money. People often exhaust traditional options first before pursuing longevity treatments. [38:49] Pentosan Polysulfate: ‘A Cure for Arthritis' Pentosan polysulfate is a repurposed drug that reduces cytokines causing degenerative disc pain. According to studies, even after just six weeks of using Pentosan Polysulfate, you can continue to reap the advantages for up to a year. [45:07] Vitamins and Supplements to Combat Arthritis Another strategy to fight arthritis is to make sure your nutrients are optimised. Vitamins D and C, and zinc are critical but straightforward micronutrients. Epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, has many benefits that aid in addressing arthritis. Its benefits include muscle-building, fat loss, and myostatin blocking. [47:07] Benefits of Gaining Muscle Muscle, as an organ, produces endocrine glands, and myokines have very beneficial effects on joints. Those with sarcopenia or muscle loss are more likely to develop joint arthritis. Electrical stimulation of muscles can be done for individuals who are further along in a disease process. Static contraction or contracting the muscles for three seconds every hour also helps muscle-building. [51:03] Inducing Autophagy Process Using Spermidine Spermidine is a polyamine compound that comes from bacteria in certain foods. Polyamine is produced by the human body as well. However, as we become older, we make less of it. It is an autophagy-Inducing agent that aids in getting rid of damaged cells. Spermidine works better than steroids at reducing inflammation. It preserves the joints without making them worse. [54:06] Trehalose: The ‘Sugar Substitute' Trehalose is glucose that impacts oxidative stress and helps clean up the cells. It has zero glycemic impact, which helps blood glucose under control. Trehalose is looked at for neurodegenerative diseases but can benefit joint pain. [56:57] Peptide Therapies as Simple, Inexpensive Aid If you are looking for simple, inexpensive aid, collagen peptides can also be beneficial. They typically are part of a mixture including Vitamin C, which helps cartilage cells. A more expensive option is aggressive peptides, like BPC 157 or Body Protection Compound 157. These peptides can aid joint regeneration. It's vital to understand the role of inflammation in arthritis rather than jumping at treatments, like stem cell therapy. [59:54] The Role of Stressed Immune System Almost every disease is related to over-aggressive, pro-inflammatory cytokines, disruption in mitochondrial function, and autophagy. Ageing causes a significant number of diseases. The immune system goes awry for many reasons, including viral exposures. [59:54] Antiviral Drugs, Hormones, and Fasting Antiviral drugs, hormones, and fasting can help the immune system fight diseases as healthy as possible. EGCG and curcumin are natural compounds that have some antiviral properties. Acyclovir is also a safe choice for combatting the herpes virus and Epstein-Barr, among others. Our immune system produces fewer hormones as we become older. Our bodies need hormones to function, so we need to replace them somehow. Hormones have huge immune-modulating properties that help stop oxidative stress. The immune system benefits from the recovery period following a fast. It can be very beneficial to clear out dead cells. [1:08:55] Rapamycin and Metformin: The ‘Future' of Arthritis Rapamycin is a chemotherapeutic medication with a solid immune-modulating effect. It is well-known for activating autophagy, which can lengthen lifespan in all mammalian species scientists have studied. Metformin is an inexpensive medication that keeps glucose control. It has some interesting studies on arthritis. One study shows the overlapping benefits in cardiovascular, renal, cancer, and obesity protection. 7 Powerful Quotes “[Arthritis as an inflammatory disease process] is the same thing that goes on with COVID. Right? Yes. Why do some people die of COVID? [It's] usually not the virus itself -- it's the immune reaction to the virus.” “So we know we have to treat [cytokines] and not the disc itself. That's the end game. Treat the problem that's causing the disc damage.” “...[W]e're really trying to get into the heads of these [20-year-olds] and say, the [disease process starts when you're] 20. Yeah, like your brain diseases, your heart diseases, and your cancers are all those processes are starting in our 20s.” “The plastic surgeons are doing fine. [P]eople are more than willing to spend that money on their facelifts and things like that [than] internally to feel better.” “You can have no cartilage and no pain or no discs, and no gain. The pain is an inflammatory sign.” “Go back, go back up the tree. And then you had all of the diseases in mitochondria and information.” "Be it cancer, metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease, or neurologic arthritis, they're all the same disease. You've got to get the immune system as healthy as possible. You have to stop oxidative stress." Resources Gain exclusive access and bonuses to Pushing the Limits Podcast by becoming a patron! Green tea compound aids p53, 'guardian of the genome' and tumor suppressor An antioxidant found in green tea may increase levels of p53, a natural anti-cancer protein, known as the ''guardian of the genome'' for its ability to repair DNA damage or destroy cancerous cells. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, February 21, 2022 An antioxidant found in green tea may increase levels of p53, a natural anti-cancer protein, known as the "guardian of the genome" for its ability to repair DNA damage or destroy cancerous cells. Published in Nature Communications, a study of the direct interaction between p53 and the green tea compound, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), points to a new target for cancer drug discovery. "Both p53 and EGCG molecules are extremely interesting. Mutations in p53 are found in over 50% of human cancer, while EGCG is the major anti-oxidant in green tea, a popular beverage worldwide," said Chunyu Wang, corresponding author and a professor of biological sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. "Now we find that there is a previously unknown, direct interaction between the two, which points to a new path for developing anti-cancer drugs. Our work helps to explain how EGCG is able to boost p53's anti-cancer activity, opening the door to developing drugs with EGCG-like compounds." (NEXT) Sweet discovery in leafy greens holds key to gut health University of Melbourne (Australia), February 15, 2022 A critical discovery about how bacteria feed on an unusual sugar molecule found in leafy green vegetables could hold the key to explaining how 'good' bacteria protect our gut and promote health. The finding suggests that leafy greens are essential for feeding good gut bacteria, limiting the ability of bad bacteria to colonise the gut by shutting them out of the prime 'real estate'. Researchers from Melbourne and the UK identified a previously unknown enzyme used by bacteria, fungi and other organisms to feed on the unusual but abundant sugar sulfoquinovose - SQ for short - found in green vegetables. Dr Goddard-Borger said the discovery could be exploited to cultivate the growth of 'good' gut bacteria. "Every time we eat leafy green vegetables we consume significant amounts of SQ sugars, which are used as an energy source by good gut bacteria," he said. (NEXT) Using Qigong to manage COVID-19 in older adults Massachusetts General Hospital, March 14, 2022 A study published in The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry reports on the possible usefulness of the integrative practice called Qigong to prevent and manage COVID-19 in older adults. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Qigong are reported to have been valuable in controlling the spread of the pandemic in China. In field hospitals set up to isolate patients with mild disease, rather than practice home quarantine, patients were treated with Ba Duan Jin Qigong under the tutelage of TCM practitioners. This was both a valuable means of exercise and a therapeutic approach. In older people, the organ function declines, and chronic medical conditions set in, causing their energy to decline. This is thought of as a deficiency of Qi and blood. TCM practitioners say that Qigong may help prevent and promote recovery from respiratory infections in such conditions because of its regulatory function in the human body, including Wei Qi. (NEXT) "Cat's claw" extract inhibits replication of SARS-CoV-2 in vitro University of Antioquia (Colombia) and Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (Peru), March 2, 2022 Researchers in Columbia and Peru have shown Uncaria tomentosa or "Cat's claw" exerts in vitro antiviral activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the agent that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The study found that the hydroalcoholic extract of Uncaria tomentosa inhibited SARS-CoV-2 viral replication and reduced its cytopathic effect on Vero E6 cells. Just 48 hours following treatment, the plaque reduction assay showed that U. tomentosaextract had inhibited the number of infectious SARS-CoV-2 particles by 92.7% at a dose of 25.0 µg/mL. (NEXT) How Tai Chi Proves to be a Gentle Solution for Improving Heart Health Brown University School of Public Health, March 21, 2022 Some of the dietary and exercise changes and rehabilitation programs that doctors recommend to heart patients can seem more than a little intimidating, especially for inactive people. But a small study suggests that Tai Chi can be a gentle way for people with heart problems to get moving at a less overwhelming pace. One group practiced Tai Chi twice a week for 12 weeks by attending sessions at the hospital. The participants in the other group attended Tai Chi sessions three times a week for 24 weeks. Both groups received DVDs so that they could practice at home. Most of the 21 men and eight women in the study had also had a previous heart attack or had undergone bypass surgery to clear a blocked artery. All the volunteers were physically inactive and had rejected conventional cardiac rehabilitation, but expressed an interest in Tai Chi. Additionally, all continued to have high cardiovascular risk factors, such as high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, overweight, and smoking. [2]
Study Finds Green Tea may Heal Neurodegenerative Conditions like Alzheimer's University of Southern California, March 27, 2022 According to the research recently published in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, green tea catechins may be able to assist the brain in healing, potentially even assisting in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and Parkinson's diseases. Specifically, the study sought to investigate how catechins from green tea may work to increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), or the activity of a nerve growth factor that is essential for the “growth, maintenance, and survival of neurons. It's believed catechins are able to increase BDNF and as such are a method worth researching further for the treatment and prevention of neurodegeneration. But the researchers acknowledge that only a small amount of EGCG (the active component of green tea polyphenols) is able to reach the brain, indicating the need for greater research into just how much EGCG is needed to make a notable difference. (NEXT) Green Mediterranean diet could be a ‘win-win' for health and the planet People who eat a traditional Mediterranean diet have lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. But new research suggests that a “green” Mediterranean diet — which avoids all meat and provides extra greens — may be even better for human health. If the diet catches on, the benefits for planetary health could be equally impressive. Ben Gurion University (Israel) and Harvard University, March 26, 2022 ResearchTrusted Source notes that global production of animal-based foods — including livestock feed — accounts for 57% of total greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, whereas production of plant-based foods accounts for only 29%. Another study estimates that if everyone became vegan, this would reduce the amount of land worldwide that farmers need to grow food by 3.1 billion hectares or 76%. A series of clinical trials now suggests that eating a “green” Mediterranean diet, or green Med diet, may provide additional benefits on top of those provided by the regular Mediterranean diet. The diet, which adds extra plant foods rich in polyphenols and aims to avoid meat completely, is also better for the planet. (NEXT) Use of antibiotics by women in midlife linked to later cognitive decline Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, March 24, 2022 A team of researchers has found a link between the use of antibiotics by middle-aged women and cognitive decline later in life. Prior research has suggested that there is a connection between gut microbiome health and mental health—communication between the gut and the central nervous system has been labeled the gut-brain axis. And some studies have shown an apparent link between problems in the gut and mental diseases, such as depression and schizophrenia. Prior research has also shown that antibiotics use can lead to serious disruptions in the microbiome. This is not surprising, since the microbiome is made up partly of bacteria. In this new effort, the researchers found a link between antibiotics use by women during middle age and a larger than normal degree of cognitive decline. They analyzed data from 15,129 female nurses describing antibiotics use and the results of cognitive scores collected several years later, comparing those who took antibiotics over different duration periods with those who did not. (NEXT) More than a gut feeling: Bilberries are good for gastrointestinal and overall health University Hospital of Zurich, Switzerland, March 27, 2022 According to experiments based out of University Hospital of Zurich, Switzerland, eating bilberries can lessen the effects of these diseases by reducing inflammation and providing overall gastrointestinal relief. In the experiment, mice were given dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) to induce colon inflammation which led to colitis. They were then broken into groups where each one was given meals with varying percentages of dried bilberries or anthocyanins (a water-soluble flavonoid) from bilberries. The results? "Highly positive effects" in both chronic and acute forms of the disease were noted in each case. There were even instances where full recoveries were observed. According to the scientists, "Oral administration of bilberries during acute DSS-induced colitis ameliorated disease severity.... Dried bilberries also improved chronic DSS-colitis." While these results were promising, it was noted that additional research should be taken to further study the effects of bilberry in helping people suffering from IBD.
