In his years marketing major brands like Gillette, Pepsi, and Dannon, Jeff Weiss never encountered any push to pitch products to consumers over the age of 55. Then, once he turned 55 himself, he realized that he didn't feel like a different person just because he crossed an age milestone – he was still himself, with all the same evolving sets of desires, goals, and needs as people younger than 55. At Age of Majority, the marketing and research firm where he serves as CEO, Weiss seeks to break down the stereotypes that people – and, by extension, companies – hold about older people. Through regular surveys of “active agers” over 55, Weiss reveals that much of what younger people assume about their elders is wrong.  Tune into this week's episode to hear Weiss debunk some preconceived notions about older consumers, and learn how data can help organizations create products and services that real people of all ages actually want to use. “Do you know His voice? If you're not praying, you're never gonna know your vocation.” Today's guest Fr. David Pellican joins his host Fr. Craig Giera in discussing Fr. David's new assignment to study sacramental theology in Rome. Together, they revisit Fr. David's vocation story, this invitation by Archbishop Vigneron to study for the sake of our future priests and the joyful adventure of freely following God's plan for your life. (00:03) Fr. Craig Giera and Fr. David Pellican welcome us to this episode of Men of the Hearts. They review the last two guests and share that today's guest is Fr. David Pellican! They share updates on their lives and their excitement for Lent. (10:10) Big news + Vocation Story: Fr. David shares his vocation story, starting with his family. Praying the Rosary and talking about vocations helped him consider “what does God want for my life?” At Age 10, “be a priest” was felt in his heart. In high school, he went on a silent retreat with his dad and the thought of the priesthood came back to him. His initial reaction was to reject the idea. He felt trapped by the idea and greatly desired to be a doctor and get married. As a high schooler, praying before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament helped Fr. David start to hear the Lord's voice. They discuss the role of prayer, “Do you know His voice? If you're not praying, you're never gonna know your vocation.” (22:13) Religious order or diocesan priesthood? A wise priest helped Fr. David see that religious communities have charisms-- and Fr. David found that his heart was made for service to parishes through the diocesan priesthood. He loved the community in seminary, but found in his heart a lot of fear of public speaking. After his ordination to the transitional diaconate, “the Lord just gave the grace.” He now enjoys public speaking and loves his vocation as a priest. (28:29) New Assignment: Archbishop Vigneron has asked Fr. David to go back to school and study dogmatic sacramental theology. This means he will step out of parish life to live and study in Rome. Fr. David discusses what he's excited about and what his fears are in taking this new assignment. He shares the experience of being asked by the Archbishop to take on these new studies and the peace he felt in moving into this new season. “There's a peace in knowing… if you're doing what the Archbishop asks, you're doing what the Lord is calling you to.” (40:50) “Anything worth doing, there's going to be challenges.” Fr. David shares about facing hesitancies or fears in following God. “God's not going to call you to something you'll be miserable doing.” They discuss the stability and permanency of vocation. They also spend time addressing the fear of making ‘the wrong' decision in discerning a vocation.

He won the Olympic gold medal in 1968 as part of the USA Men's Basketball team, while breaking US individual records in Points, Rebounds and Blocks. Is Destiny a matter of choice or chance?  Mark Henick has his first mental health crisis in Grade 6 and by Grade 8 he tried suicide for the first time. By age 15 Mark's life was like a Yo-Yo bouncing out of psychiatric wards, with treatment often involving a cocktail of drugs.  At Age 15 Mark's mental state was at a point where he felt he had only one choice and that was his Life or Death.  He chose death and ended up on the wrong side of an overpass, perched on a few inches of concrete, looking down a tunnel that he hoped would end his pain.  That night, by chance and he ended up one night feeling his only thing he had a choice in. Life and death. He chose death and found himself standing on the wrong side of an overpass to end his life. By chance, two people were there. One yelled 'JUMP YOU COWARD' and the other, a man in a light brown jacket, saved his life.  That experience showed Mark he did have a choice. To live his life like the man who saved him versus the many. that baited him. Fast forward to today, and Mark is combining his personal experiences with his mental health, combined with his education and passion to help others and to be one of Canada's leading advocates on mental health. They're more focused on a benchmark or guideline to see where they are on “track.”Based on an article by Michael Batnik responding to a Fidelity infographic, at Age 30, Fidelity says you should have the equivalent of 1 year's income in your retirement plan.At Age 40: you should have 3x your current income set aside in retirement funds. At Age 50: you should have 6x your current income set aside in retirement funds to know that you are on track. At Age 60: you should have 8x your current income set aside in retirement funds. At Age 67: you should have 10x your current income set aside in retirement funds.Follow Up:“Michael Batnik didn't believe this was realistic until looking at the data. A young entrepreneur from the US that has tried out many things and failed in at least as many. Sam is currently running his company “BLNK Slate Media” and creating video content for small to Fortune 500 companies for their social media platforms. What has been very obvious in this conversation was Sam's attitude to trying out something new. His Moto is to go for what you want and invest in yourself, time and money wise and if you fail you know it was the wrong thing and then move on. As well Life-Life Balance. We all work so much so we should be doing something that we can identify with. 3 Things about Sam: - Outdoors, Snowboard, bike, Adventure and active - Video create, LinkedIN Instagram and TikTak - Snowboarding in winter with jumps and tricks; during summer longboard cruising Colour: - Mint green. 07E8B7 The colour came up when he asked a friend to help him rebrand. Sam wanted something in green, blue or teal. And then this special green came up which he liked as it reminded him of his track bike from school times. Young and running his own business: Sam had a father that is self employed and who has encouraged him to go his own way from an early age. To do what he loves. Some of his business steps were: Cutting gras for neighbours, At Age 14 Pizza Cook, then manager of the Snow Park& Ball park with 2-7 people under him. And at the age of 18 he started "BLNK Slate Media" using an iPhone and an entry DSLR His success can be traced back to: - Willingness and love to earn his own money - Going out and participating in business Networking events - Reach out to connections and learn from them and his friends - Not being shy to talk to people and saying yes even if he didn't know how to do the job - Continuously trying something new, failing and investing and not being afraid of doing so Sam gets to share his stories on how he got to his first job, made his first video and posting it to LinkedIN as well how he learned in 3 days to shoot video with a DSLR without prior knowledge and nailing the job. Creativity: Everyone is creative. Sam's creative strength is to talk. To be creative one has to be comfortable in failing while trying to create something new. It is a problem solving ability. Test, fail, try again… And repeat. Advice: Test and fail more. Spend money on yourself. This is an investment in your growth and it will cost but you'll grow. Sam for examples used all the money he earned and invested it into his growth and now his company. - Do something everyday. Momentum is everything. - Don't try 12 things in the same time. Focus on ONE thing. Go for it with all you have - Don't hire too fast. Call for action: Go and do something that is uncomfortable for you. At Age 14 I was in love with the sport of javelin and committed to it fully. Someone asked me recently what made me choose javelin. After a few thoughts I came back to my incredible training partners Britlyn Garrett and Bradly Stevens. They are the reason i wanted it all. I saw what this sport could do, and i wanted every bit of it I could get. I grew up training with a national champion, who continues to be my role mode. Brit showed me what it means to be a teammate, an athlete, and a mature growing women. She took me to get my nails done after 8th grade graduation, and cheered me on all the way through every single high school meet. She drove all the way to see me throw all these years later in college. She is my one-phone-call-away sister. Seeing how important hard work was to her it made it important to me too. Her care for me never wavered based on a workout or a meets outcome, she ALWAYS has my back. Brad won his state championship, broke our school record, and then came back from surgery in 9 months just to win it all again. I watched him grind late, late after the practice was long over to get his body back. I watched him earn his success with every freaking drip of sweat and blood. He never ever gave up, and he never let me either. He never treated me like “coaches daughter.” He still takes care of me like a sister. Seeing what he could fight through showed me what dreams are worth. Growing up with them leading the way, I chose this journey. Still i look to them as I get to keep growing in this sport of javelin. Seeing everything they gave, everything they got back, it answers every reason.

One of the common questions about retirement is which age you should target so that you’re maximizing your assets. It’s never too early to start discussing the options, so whether you’re in your early 50s or approaching 70, there’s important information for each age range that will help you prepare for that big day. In this episode, find out what you can be doing at each milestone age to put yourself in the best position. For full show notes, visit our website here.  ----more---- Equipping Points: 0:36 - AT AGE 50 You get to start making catch-up contributions. For your IRA or Roth IRA, you can add an additional $1,000 per year for you and your spouse. In your 401(k) or 403(b) or 457, you can add another $6,000 per year to max it out. 1:43 - AT AGE 55 If you are between 55 and 59½ and you still have a 401(k) from the previous job, you can avoid early withdrawal penalties but will still be taxed. 2:31 - AT AGE 59½ Now you no longer have a 10% penalty for taking money out of your IRA, your Roth, and your 401(k). Keep in mind that you still have to pay the tax. 2:53 - AT AGE 62 This is the first year you can begin to take Social Security. 3:20 - AT AGE 65 Your primary focus here should be setting up your Medicare benefits. If you are not still working at a company that provides healthcare, you will need to find health insurance. David shares a client example of a couple paying high prices for healthcare until 65. 4:37 - AT AGE 66 AND 67 This is full retirement age for Social Security depending on your birth date. Now you can receive the full amount of Social Security. It’s also the age when salary income from other jobs does not reduce the amount you receive from Social Security. 5:21 - AT AGE 70½ You have to start taking money out of your IRA and 401(k). This money has been tax-deferred so you will pay taxes as you withdraw. 6:45 - WHAT YOU CAN BE DOING NOW It’s never too early to have a plan in place. A detailed plan is not critical if you’re already saving in your 20s, 30s, or early 40s. If you are in your late 40s, 50s, or early 60s, it’s vital to have a real and written plan in place. Your retirement age is in your hands.
