Episode 136: Dead or Alive "Blue Christmas 2000" (2000) and U2 "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" (1987) Another year is coming to a close, and with the end of the year comes the holiday season. And with the holiday season comes Christmas songs, of course! So once again, Brian and Sarah close out the year by choosing a couple of songs to talk about, before they turn their full attention to holiday preparations and celebrations. And although the titles of both songs may look familiar, only one of them is a cover version. The first selection is "Blue Christmas 2000" by Dead or Alive. It's been quite a while since Brian and Sarah have talked about this band, so they're both eager to have a discussion about more than just the selected song. In fact, they go all the way back to 1988 to discuss the album Nude for a bit--which gives Brian the opportunity to tell a story from his freshman year in college that never fails to amuse and delight Sarah. The hosts go on to discuss the band's success in Japan; yet another version of this song (that still isn't the one you're thinking of); a synth voice whose name Sarah says sounds like a TV show; and, almost unbelievably, a recently-released new Dead or Alive album. The second song chosen for this episode is U2's version of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)." As this song was recorded and released in 1987, this selection ties in neatly (almost like a bow on top of a package!) with the four episodes released earlier this year, where Brian and Sarah, along with Tom Austin-Morgan of the podcast Banned Biographies (and now of the band Sham 69 as well!), discussed U2's iconic 1987 album The Joshua Tree. "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" was recorded by U2 for inclusion on the charity album A Very Special Christmas, so Brian searched through his archives and found his notes from 2018, when he and Sarah discussed several other songs from that album. He reminds us about the history of the album, the charity it supports, and the success it has had both on the charts and as a fundraising vehicle. And, since this selection is actually a cover version, the hosts take some time to discuss the original version of the song and its interesting history of being in the public's awareness, which includes not only a discussion about Darlene Love, but also a late-night talk show host. Additionally, Brian shares some very recent--and rather exciting-- chart information for the song. After the two song discussions, Brian and Sarah decide to share their top 10 favorite Christmas songs recorded by artists they've talked about on the podcast. How many of their favorites are on your list as well? This set has been updated by removing two Jingle Bells' and 'Santa Clause Is Coming To Town' versions and 'White Christmas was moved to a different location for better flow and cohesion. Well HO! HO! HO! After careful consideration as to what I will likely do next year — I decided to go ahead and mix-up this batch of modern-day holiday classic dance remixes for everyone's enjoyment. Well, maybe not everyone. This special edition EDM set features a variety of genres including: Electro House, Dubstep, Trance, Trap, Hip-Hop, House and even Eurodance. It's quite a bit to digest and may not be for everyone but that's why Party Favorz has years of holiday remix sets that may be more to your liking in our back catalog. I listed to the original mix yesterday and was impressed at how I was able to get such a diverse group of songs at wildly different BPM(s) to mesh cohesively. One of the tricks is to duplicate a few songs like "All I Want For Christmas,' 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,' and 'Last Christmas.' To be certain there were multiple copies of 'Jingle Bells' (a song I've always hated mainly for its lack of structure) 'Christmas, Baby Please Come Home' (one of my all-time favorites especially by Darlene Love and U2) and others but in the spirit of trying to keep this set short and sweet — I went with what worked. My only disappoint was no remix of 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,' where the version by the Pretenders has special meaning to me. There was a decent remix of the Lou Rawls' jazzed up version but I couldn't make it work. Overall, I'm glad I did this even though it's a one-off. Some of the songs will be included in next year's 'ULTIMATE' X-mas Dance set — especially the illusive dance mix of 'Happy X-mas (War Is Over)' by John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band. I stumbled across this remix late last year and stowed it away for a rainy day and I'm pleased as punch to have stumbled across it. Originally, I had three bonus sets scheduled for November then whittled it down to two but I was a overwhelmed with what was already on my plate so I dropped both and kept the Purple Disco Machine Legay set. I thought I'd give y'all a heads up that one of those sets is going to see the light of day by the end of the week. It's totally out of leftfield and wholly unexpected but it's going to be one epic party set worth your time. That's all I'm saying at the moment. Until the next time...ENJOY! Grieving During the Holidays Part II (Part one, episode 208), Liz Miller joins Joey and Pricilla to talk through her dreadful first couple of holiday seasons without her husband of 6 years. What does that kind of suffering feel like? Liz explains that when you're going through this sort of suffering, any future seasons of joy seem impossible. She shares some tips, including the need to offer grace in all directions. It's typically uncharted territory to the sufferer as well as the loved ones around them who make mistakes, even saying hurtful things out of complete ignorance and with good intentions. Oh yeah, and don't send Christmas cards to people like Liz. Give it a few years, for crying out loud. We talk about her late husband, laugh about some memories of him as we tribute to Joshua Miller and the short life him and Liz shared. Our hearts are with those who are experiencing this sort of grief and at the very least, know you are not alone. Team humanity, we love you, and may God be with you in your sadness. There are over 500 recorded versions of “White Christmas” out there. How do we determine which is the definitive version and how do we separate it from nostalgia...or does nostalgia need Christmas like Phil Spector needs The Wrecking Crew? Another album featuring the famed Wrecking Crew? Brandon and David employ the assistance of their better halves to answer these questions and offer their own favs/least favs and even some hot takes. Home Alone > Home Alone 2 is obvious, but detractors will not go quietly. Also, truly, honestly, is there any OTTO MVP on this album other than the illustrious Darlene Love? Listen to this episode while decorating your tree or drinking heavily to prep for a covid Christmas as Phil Spector rots in prison and ask yourself: Are we truly living in a marshmallow world? Album #37, “A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector”. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/latetotheparty1989/message
Rolling Stone calls it the greatest rock and roll Christmas song ever but it went largely unnoticed for a decade after coinciding with a tragedy. This is the story behind…Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - Presented by Pizza Pizza! It was recorded in 1963 for the album A Christmas Gift to You from Phil Spector. The album gave Phil’s signature “wall of sound” treatment to well-known Christmas songs like Frosty the Snowman, Winter Wonderland and White Christmas. The one original song on the album was Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) with Darlene Love on lead vocal and Cher on the backing vocals. It was meant to be the album’s lead single, but it was released on November 22, 1963 – the same day US President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The song never charted and the album was not the success Spector envisioned. But Spector thought he had something with Darlene Love’s incredible vocal performance, so after Christmas he brought Darlene back and they recorded a new version called Johnny, Please Come Home. Same music. Just different lyrics to tell a similar story without any reference to Christmas. That really didn’t work out either and the song virtually vanished for almost a decade. The album was re-released in 1972 on Apple Records – the label founded by The Beatles – and that’s what sent it on it’s path to becoming a Christmas classic. It peaked at #6 on Billboard’s album chart that year – while that’s it’s highest chart position to date, it re-entered the chart as recently as 2019, peaking at #12. Artists are often asked how they feel about singing songs year after year that have been out for so long. When Darlene Love sings live, you expect to hear her sing Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) – but she’s not tired of it. Possibly because she didn’t sing it live for the first 20 years it was out. As told in the Oscar-winning documentary, 20 Feet From Stardom, Darlene was a background singer back in the day and never had the chance to perform the song live. It wasn’t until the 80’s that she’d perform the song regularly. On his last show before Christmas, from 1986 – 2014, David Letterman would bring Darlene Love on his show to sing the song. During her final Letterman appearance, she finished the song standing on Paul Schaefer’s piano and did not come down when Dave came over to thank her. She reportedly stayed on top of the piano because she didn’t want to cry if Dave hugged her after that final performance. Darlene still sings the song live on TV every year – since Letterman wrapped up his nightly show, she now performs it annually on The View. Darlene was involved in the recording of another version of the song for the 1987 charity album A Very Special Christmas. U2 did a faithful cover of the original and asked Darlene to sing the backing vocal. Darlene Love, now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is the only singer to ever back up U2 and Elvis Presley. Phil Spector's Christmas album from 1963 had only one original composition on it, and it went pretty much ignored for over twenty years.
Holy Moley! Episode 100! What a milestone! This is the first of TWO episodes I'll be publishing this week. You're getting this one now, and another one sometime tomorrow, because I felt badly about taking my time with Episode 99. As I mentioned during the show, the Phil Spector-produced Christmas album went through several re-issues and name changes between its release in 1963 and the early 1980s, including an unfortunate period when the album was remastered into manufactured stereo. In those days, that often meant that the higher-end sounds went to one channel and the lower-end stuff went to the other. It was a mess and really added nothing to the product overall. At any rate, it was around the same time in the 1980s that a bunch of different events came together and allowed the song to finally break out. One was the reissue of the album on Rhino Records, in its original mono mixes. The second was Darlene Love's appearance in a Broadway show, which led directly to her string of performances on David Letterman's show on both NBC and CBS, and finally we have the cover version by U2 the following year. All of these things made for a resurgence in both the popularity of the song, and in Darlene Love's career. Stay tuned! Very soon we'll take a look at a Nirvana song, by listener request! We could’ve talked all night and I’d still have wanted more. Thoughtful, generous, revealing, insightful, and oh so fun, legendary, Grammy Winning bassist, Will Lee, took us on a thrill ride through his stellar, illustrious and industrious, career… growing up in Texas, seeing The Beatles on Ed Sullivan and that very night blowing the dust off his untouched drums and deciding he was going to be a musician. For Life. He made good on that choice. From playing his first gig in a parking lot and getting paid $6 to do it; playing in six bands a night, six days a week, to landing his first major gig with his dream come true, Dreams––alongside Billy Cobham… to playing Bette Midler’s first tour with theretofore unknown Barry Manilow; playing with Ace Frehley, Chaka Khan, the late, great, Hiram Bullock; alongside Paul Schaffer, from the from the very first Late Night with David Letterman to the very last Last Show… some of his favorite Letterman memories: singing a featured MacArthur Park, backed by a full orchestra and Jimmy Webb, the yearly Darlene Love, Baby Please Come Home––the first time in sweatshirts with the 4 piece World’s Most Dangerous Band, to the last, formal extravaganza; Jay Thomas, Warren Zevon, James Brown! Session work, his ongoing life’s blood. Getting loaded then getting sober, 33 years ago, playing through it all. There was praise for Bernard Fowler, Tommy Allen, loving memories of Geoff Emerick, who was at Will’s Fab Faux gig this past Saturday night, where I was blessed to be, just three days before he passed. Will talked Beatles throughout, shared some Ringo insight, how he prepped Revolution 9 as a newlywed, the upcoming Fab Faux Beacon gig celebrating George, and a few other projects he’s orchestrating which are close to his heart and celebrated his beloved Sandrine’s IPA Award for her book, Nudescapes. And then, he played, and sang… so chill… so Will. I couldn’t adore the man more. Humble, focused and true.
