Dr. Sadaf Lodhi OBGYN is back on the podcast this year to discuss the gender health gap and how it creates even more barriers for women, especially in marginalized communities of Muslim American women: from the Black community to asylees, immigrants, and refugees. Sick women don't have the luxury of having sex positivity in their homes when their basic needs won't be met, and are in fact sabotaged by the state. We talk about trauma, cell memory, cultural competency, and funding cuts that directly impact how we fare in the American pseudo-healthcare maze that's hard to navigate when we DO speak English. No visit with Dr. Sadaf Lodhi is complete without talking about mindset on the path to unlearning guilt and shame, and embracing sex positivity. There's also lots of good news on the horizon with Dr. Lodhi and we hope you catch it towards the end of this episode. If you're in midlife and noticing that you're forgetting things more often, feeling more anxious, experiencing heart palpitations, mood swings, weight gain, or dull skin... you might be going through perimenopause or menopause! These seemingly unrelated symptoms may actually be connected, and part of the hormonal changes seen in peri and menopause! The good news is that suffering is not mandatory. Make sure to visit your dermatologist and gynecologist to get accurate information and the best support during this season of life. Don't miss this week's podcast episode where Dr. Sadaf Lodhi talks all about peri and menopause. Learn about the symptoms, what medications can help, and get useful recommendations for getting through this stage. You wouldn't want to miss this one! Key Takeaways: - Perimenopause is the time before a woman's last menstrual period when hormone levels fluctuate, leading to various symptoms. - Common symptoms of perimenopause include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, brain fog, joint pain, hair loss, pain with sex, decreased libido, and irregular periods. - Hormone therapy, specifically estrogen and progesterone, can help alleviate symptoms and prevent long-term health issues like osteoporosis, heart disease, and diabetes. - The best time to start hormone therapy is during perimenopause or early menopause, before the age of 60 or within 10 years of the last menstrual period. - There is a knowledge gap among practitioners regarding hormone therapy, and it is important to find a healthcare provider who is up-to-date and comfortable prescribing hormones. - Social media and increased awareness are empowering women to demand better research and treatments for perimenopause and menopause symptoms. Topical estrogen cream can be used in the vulva region to address the changes in vaginal tissue that occur due to decreased estrogen levels in postmenopausal women. - Vaginal estrogen cream helps prevent infections, bladder infections, and recurrent UTIs by maintaining the health of the vaginal tissue. Vaginal estrogen cream is safe and not systemically absorbed when used topically. As a physician, she noticed that her patients had concerns about sex, but felt ill-equipped to answer their questions. This led her to become an intimacy coach so she could learn more about sexual and reproductive health. With her training as an OBGYN and intimacy coach, she can educate more women and empower them to make informed choices about their bodies. Promoting Intimacy in Relationships with a Busy Schedule As physicians and students, we devote most of our hours to medicine. But even with busy schedules, we should make time for our relationships. Set a date with your spouse, relative, or friend and be present when you are together. Put away your phone and focus on bonding with the other person. You don't have to do anything grand, a simple activity shared between the two of you can help you feel connected.  Building Trust in Doctor Patient Relationships Trust starts with honesty. Always be open and forthcoming when talking to patients. You don't have to be on-call, but establishing an open line of communication can make patients feel like they can rely on you. Listen and validate their experience so they feel seen and heard. A lot of patients report medical gaslighting or feeling dismissed by their healthcare providers. Like so many others, I used to cringe when my parents or others would talk about sex. And it wasn't really until I was in my professional life helping others find solutions to difficulties or dissatisfaction in their own sex lives that I developed the language and confidence to discuss it openly.  Today's guest Ob/Gyn Dr. Sadaf Lodhi and I share common goals of empowering our patients to explore their bodies, become confident expressing their needs and feel comfortable having conversations about their intimate lives. In the episode we tackled the taboo and answered the following questions:***************- Why is sex such a taboo topic?- How does one identify the need to seek out sex therapy?- How can couples adjust to changes in a relationship over time - like changes in stress levels, body image, hormones, physical changes or difficulties due to medical conditions?- How does emotional intimacy affect a couple's physical connection?- How can someone with a traumatic past heal and move toward a healthy intimate life?- How are sex therapy and sex coaching different?- How can someone become comfortable discussing intimacy when they were raised in a household where it wasn't talked about?- How can we talk to our children about sex positivity and ensure that they have a healthy approach to their future intimate lives?- How does your upbringing affect your attitudes and beliefs around sex and intimacy?- What happens when you realize that you are dissatisfied with your sex / intimate life?- How do you figure out what you like sexually?- How do you develop the confidence to express what you want?***************Dr.  Lodhi is a Board Certified Ob/Gyn and Certified Life Coach from Rutgers University.  She is currently undergoing AASECT training at the University of Michigan.   She offers courses and one-on-one coaching services. ***************You can find more from Dr. Lodhi at:Website: www.drsadaf.comIG/TIKTOK: @drsadafobgynYoutube/Podcast: Muslim Sex Podcast***************Thanks so much for listening! There's lots more on my website:www.drlexlifestylemedicine.comand....If you love the music, check out:www.therealmichaelvm.com/musicAll my love & gratitude to:my guest: Dr.  Sadaf Lodhi,my inspiration: my patients,my idea guy: Edward,my intro crew: Izzy, Lance & Lucia,my tech & equipment guy: Pop,my angel: Susie,my music & sound guy: Mike VM,my mascots: Jules & P.S., my creative director: Emily,my love, Michael.***************#sexpositive #sexpositiveeducation #sexpositiveart #sexpositiveculture #sexpositiveevents #sexpositiveworld #sexuality #sexualityeducation  #sexualityacceptance  #sexualitycoach #sextherapy #sexcoach #intimacy #intimacycoach

Religion and Sex – Can They Be Bedfellows? Today we discuss the Muslim culture, sex, and vaginismus with Dr. Sadaf Lodhi, OBGyn and sex coach for Muslim women. She is host of the Muslim Sex Podcast – we discuss her origin story Religion can have a profound effect on one's sex life/sexuality. Islam is a sex positive religion. When the Muslim countries were colonized they tended to become more puritanical. Islam discusses sex within the context of marriage. Many times women experience shame and people don't talk about women's pleasure. Common things Dr. Lodhi sees women coming to her with: Seeing sex as a duty Low libido Beliefs like sex is dirty or sex will be painful One of her most important things she likes to do is empower women through education. Women get pressure from their partner and an expectation that it is a duty. And they are failing them and God. Vaginismus – the involuntary contraction of the muscles surrounding the lower 1/3rd of the vagina. 1/3rd of Muslim culture may struggle with vaginismus. The role of mindfulness in helping vaginismus and low desire. “People make putting something in the vagina a big freaking deal” – Dr. C. The role of PT in treating vaginismus. There are no FDA approved medications for vaginismus. Dr. Lodhi shares a huge win with us. It is not about the number of times of sex a week. The role of the scholars and the males in helping women feel sex positive.
