Send us a textAndrew Sturtz has written songs for over twenty years, releasing projects but never focusing on touring those projects. He's lived in Boulder for nearly a decade, and through playing open mics and other events in the town, he met people who have since become close musical and personal companions. Now, Sturtz has christened a group with his last name, a quartet that includes himself on guitar, Courtlyn Carpenter on cello, Will Kuepper on bass, and Jim Herlihy on banjo. All four provide vocals, with Sturtz providing lead vocals. The band spent a month coming up with their name, even creating a spreadsheet including dozens of potential band names (including Slow Drive, Alcove, Topiary, and Incongruity). However, the group eventually realized that Sturtz served as a perfect name for the group, which focuses on new arrangements of the namesake's original material. #26: Breakdown - Legitimate incongruity: Strategic positioning within hybrid categories

Kent State College of Business

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 10, 2025 8:00

The primary purpose of this research is to examine the extent to which positioning hybrid ventures as more or less congruent with their category influences perceptions of their legitimacy. To do so, we first introduce and define the notion of a hybrid category as an institutional context which combines two or more dominant institutional logics that both constrain and enable organizational action. We then construct a theoretical framework instantiated within a hybrid category, suggesting that moderate incongruence between a new venture's identity narrative and the expectations most strongly associated with the category will positively influence perceived legitimacy. We further predict specific relationships among dimensions of perceived legitimacy, as well as their downstream effects on an individual's willingness to contribute resources. Across three studies in which we experimentally manipulate congruence with a hybrid category, we find a consistent pattern of support for our hypotheses and reveal a unique benefit for new hybrid ventures who position themselves in a manner that is moderately incongruent with the hybrid category. In addition, our results suggest that moral legitimacy perceptions act as a precursor to cognitive legitimacy perceptions in new hybrid categories. In this episode David and Jake talk about the book 'Paul and the Gift' by John Barclay and deep dive into how the theology of grace reveals profound truths about God's unconditional love for us. We learn that grace was a concept present in Judaism, but Paul's radical message was that God's grace is given freely to all, Jew and Gentile alike, without regard to our worth or merit. The crucifixion and resurrection of Christ defeated the power of sin and enables us to live transformed lives empowered by the Holy Spirit. While we cannot earn God's favor through legalistic rule-following, true grace will naturally overflow into a life that bears good fruit. As we grasp the depths of God's unmerited kindness towards us, it should fill us with humility, gratitude and a desire to extend that same grace to others. Guest: Liz Whitaker from Mean Girls Minute. Theme-spotting: Force theme, Kylo Ren theme, Leia theme, Resistance March, Tension.  Soundtrack: "4. The Supremacy" Discussion topics: "Force Theme vs Binary Sunset vs Obi Wan"  Liz's method of writing music to herself is "BUM bum bum bum bum" Suspension chords and the effect they can have on a scene. Water bottle rattle symbolism. Xanthe feels some "Pavane for a Dead Princess" (Maurice Ravel) vibes. What hyperspace sounds like and how we would recreate hyperspace at home. Rundown of sound design highlights. Futuristic beeps and blips. So underrated yet so precise.  How 90's pop divas unknowingly trained our ears to recognize emphatic key changes. The topic on this episode of the Wholeness podcast is self-acceptance and self-love, which is especially important during COVID-19, when we feel so isolated. Even though you may feel disconnected from others, Melissa describes connection with and love for yourself as of utmost importance right now and always.  She teaches that the only two human emotions are love and fear and that fear becomes primary when you are letting your ego have control. The ego shows you a false reality and ultimately causes you to abandon yourself, but love is the answer to life and allows you to operate from the highest level of consciousness available to humans. Maybe you, like Melissa, were conditioned to criticize yourself from a young age and it will take some very conscious effort to be able to love and accept yourself for who you are, to venture within and tell your inner child that you will never abandon her again.  No one can make this shift to love for you; you need to choose to get connected with your body and love yourself now, exactly as you are. Melissa teaches that one of the key elements of this journey to self-love is mirror work and positive affirmations. In today’s episode she created a special FREE gift to support you in your journey to Wholeness to have Radical Self-Love and Acceptance! Go here to get your FREE gift! When asked if she sees incongruity between her career as the drummer of the rock band Neon Trees and her membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Elaine Bradley has replied that she finds total incongruity between being a human and being a disciple of Jesus Christ. On today’s episode, Bradley shares the foundations of her belief, how she has maintained perspective, and how Christ fills in the gap between where we are and where we are meant to be. “We really struggle as humans to find that line where Christ wants us to live between accepting yourself too much and not accepting yourself enough. That, to me, is the essence of navigating faith.”  Show Notes 2:30- The Complexities of Faith 4:36- Incongruity and Hope in Christ 12:04- Evolution of Faith 18:02- Grounding Impact of Family  21:45- Relationships of Respect Despite Differences 25:53- Deliberately Maintaining Perspective 30:00- Sebastian 36:15- Fame 37:21- Knowing Who You Are 40:30- What Does It Mean To Be “All In” the Gospel of Jesus Christ? I like to follow books to the letter. I like to trust the process and then judge it. I like to do this because it’s often tempting to skip stuff or think that I know it. And by repeating that with book after book, course after course, learning after learning, I develop a massive effing blind spot. I did a few exercises around my feelings / beliefs / associations around money. Here’s the trick: I disengaged my logical adult self and got the inner 10 year old to answer. And holy heck did she answer. Just. Wow. The first exercise was to write down what you think is good, bad, or ok about money. As a 10 year old. I wrote that having the best was a good thing I wrote that saying “I can’t afford it” was a bad thing I wrote that cheering yourself up was an OK thing If you look at these with a very adult perspective you can argue that it’s actually not that bad. Yes there’s a healthy way to look at it. But there’s also an unhealthy way to look at it. And this is shortcut, 10-year-old logic. You can’t rely on this stuff when you’re feeling stressed, tired, and overwhelmed. Which is usually when one makes poor decisions. It was…an eye-opening thing to face. The second exercise was to imagine money as a person you were in a relationship with and describe that relationship. Also. Wow. The third exercise was to write my money values. Values is a really airy fairy word so I just went with money messages. I wrote honestly. It was tragic to look at. I can see why I’ve had so much trouble. There is so much incongruity between the messages. Here’s the cool thing about this exercise. Some of the them, I’ll just have to watch out for, but others could be really beautifully reframed. Here’s one: If it’s important enough, I’ll figure it out later. I rewrote this as: If it’s important enough, it’s worth waiting for. I value the freedom and lightheartedness that comes from being resourceful with what I’ve got. I have work to do. That’s clear. Oh yeah, and next time someone gives you an activity or an exercise to do, just do it. Trust the process. Judge after. If this had been a useless exercise then I would have, at least, gotten better at introspection and critical thinking. And I would also be justified in saying, “this isn’t relevant to me.”

Incongruity is a good way to describe today's show. Let's start with the second hour which features an expert on cannibalism, a doctor describing attitudes toward heart health, and the director of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council talking about a new app that promises meat-buying made easy. Now that we've established a flow, Hour one includes a parenting expert on talking to your kids about prejudice and Manny the Movie Guy predicts the Oscar winners. Gonzo Greg Spillane and Skylar Cuarisma join Phil Hulett to cover these stories: Who has the most orgasms? Fort Colins, Colorado will free the nipple. Impending glass ban at Boston bars. Beyonce still relevant next year? Who is JZ? Twitter jail. Uber is deeply pained. An end to hangovers, if you can wait. Top signs you'll get divorced. Swedish town considers sex breaks for employees. Yoga pants DUI girl. Your washing machine wants to kill you. Gym rats lose libido. Listen to the entire show and tell your friends.

Humor and Storytelling in Preaching

Consider a shared experience that will never happen exactly the same way again as the class participates in a group experience. From where does humor come? Explore philosophers and the subject of humor. Kant holds that humor comes from incongruity or surprise. Schopenhauer agrees that humor is incongruity and he was Charlie Chaplin’s favorite author. Incongruity happens between what we expect and what appears. It is the incongruity between the world that we expect and the world that actually is. Consider the Road Runner as he runs through openings but the Coyote runs into the painting. Watch a brief clip demonstrating the break of expectations when sheep run through an opening. Hobbes felt that laughter is a sudden glory. We suddenly perceive that we are better than someone else. It is the superiority theory. This is what makes “inside jokes” work and why we laugh at the misfortune of others. Consider the humor of a man who falls on a banana peel. Some argue that we are laughing to correct someone else and that is why we laugh at someone who’s zipper is down. This may be the origin of what is called “gallows’ humor.” We decide not to be afraid of death. C. S. Lewis in “Surprised by Joy” holds that laughter comes from a sudden surprise. Consider that the person who laughs is the one who wins the game. Children enjoy knock knock’s to surprise us. Philosophers differ about whether or not there is anything that is universally funny. What is humor? It is almost impossible to define humor. Most philosophers, however, will grant that it comes from several places. There is the humor of shock and the relaxation or relief of social norms. There is the humor of superiority-seeing another person fall, fail, or get hurt. This is slapstick. Watch a clip of Laurel and Hardy in “The Music Box”. Realize that much of biblical humor is incongruity. It is the laugh of the unexpected.

Physiological incongruity of the humero-ulnar joint

Investigations into the distribution of subchondral bone density in the human elbow have suggested that the geometry of the trochlear notch deviates from a perfect fit with the trochlea, and that the load is transmitted ventrally and dorsally rather than through the centre of the humero-ulnar joint. We therefore decided to make a quantitative assessment of the degree of incongruity between the two components in 15 human specimens (age distribution 60 to 93 years) with different types of joint surface. Polyether casts of the joint cavity were prepared under loads of 10,40,160 and 640 N. The thickness of the casts was then measured at 50 predetermined points, and an area distribution of the width of the joint space represented in a two-dimensional template of the trochlear notch. The reproducibility of this procedure was tested by image analysis. At a load of 10 N, only a narrow space was present ventrally and dorsally in the joint, but in the depths of the trochlear notch a width of 0.5 to 1 mm was recorded in the centre, and up to 3 mm at its medial and lateral edges. Specimens with continuous articular cartilage showed a lower degree of incongruity than those with a divided articular surface. As the load was increased to 640 N, however, the original incongruity between the articular surfaces disappeared almost completely. The joint surfaces became more congruous, probably because of the viscoelastic properties of the articular cartilage and the subchondral bone, and the contact areas merged in the centre of the joint. It is suggested that this physiological incongruity brings about an optimal distribution of stress over the articular surface during the transmission of the load, and it may lead to better nourishment of the articular cartilage by providing intermittent mechanical stimulation and circulation of the synovial fluid.
