I desire an escape from the banality of 2020-2021 existence, but even as I watch something that provides me the temporary departure, it further reminds me of just how unromantic and boringly "responsible" my mode of living has been during the pandemic and even before 2020. This week on Every Rom Com, Jen, Sophia, and Zoë finish the travel series and the “Before” trilogy with the 2013 Richard Linklater film “Before Midnight.” We’ll talk about the complexities of long-term love and how relationships change with time, children, and compromise. We’ll cover healthy communication styles and what’s off-limits (or not) in a fight. And somewhere in the middle of the podcast we figure out the secrets to both love and life (don’t miss it!) Since it’s the travel series, we also cover the film’s beautiful locations in the Southern Peloponnese of Greece and give you some ideas for a future vacation! To top it all off, Jen does an off-the-cuff proposal for the plot of a future trilogy with Jesse and Celine. Don’t miss this deep dive into life and love in all its complexity! WARNING: There is no spoiler-free section in this episode, so we recommend seeing the movie first! 0:00-6:33 Introduction, Where would you like to travel once the pandemic is managed? 6:33-17:47 Trailer, Basic Info, General Opinion Julie Delpy Asked for Equal Pay: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/oct/03/julie-delpy-equal-pay-before-midnight 17:47-25:36 Cast & Crew In-Depth For information on Richard Linklater, listen to our “Before Sunrise” episode. Actor, writer, director, and all-around storyteller Ethan Hawke is an advocate for truthfulness in both art and life. Although wary of giving advice, he provides plenty in his thoughtful “In the Envelope” interview: get out of your head and into your gut, study the work of artists you admire, use auditions as opportunities to exceed your comfort zone, and more. The more holistically one approaches a career in the arts, he says, the better. “But more essential to that is, most of us are only as good as our opportunities. And when the opportunities aren’t there, you have to search for ways to articulate your love...to make your imagination manifest.” Born in Texas and raised in New York and New Jersey, Ethan has been producing intensely honest work since his teenaged breakout roles in “Explorers” and “Dead Poets Society.” He’s appeared before or behind the camera in “Reality Bites,” “Gattaca,” “The Hottest State,” Blumhouse Productions films, “First Reformed,” “Blaze,” and “Tesla,” to name a few. One of the few artists to be Academy Award–nominated for both acting (for “Training Day” and “Boyhood”) and writing (for “Before Sunset” and “Before Midnight,” two of several collaborations with fellow filmmaker Richard Linklater), Ethan is also a Tony-nominated New York theater veteran, arts philanthropist, and political activist. This year he starred in the New Group’s “Waiting for Godot” and produced, co-wrote, and earned a SAG Award nod as John Brown on Showtime’s limited series “The Good Lord Bird.” Read his 2018 Backstage cover story here: https://bit.ly/3eGQm2K --- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years.

This episode was recorded on February 15th, 2021. We are joined by Drea and Tamara to take a look at Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004), and Before Midnight (2013). We all discuss our initial thoughts; fate vs. autonomy; a relationship between two egos; the varying pressures on men and women; the transformation of a relationship; marriage; getting your affairs in order vs. taking advantage of a moment; the intrinsic lie in romantic comedies; swipe culture; time; being in love; and how the movies serve as a trilogy. We also discuss how this is a white movie, if at all; comparable black movies; and radical examination of black love. Happy Valentine's Day to all the lovers out there! On this special, extra isolated fake holiday, Aya and Kevin are joined by Merry-Go-Round Magazine contributor Amanda Ball to discuss one of the most highly esteemed film trilogies ever made: THE BEFORE TRILOGY. Three feature-length films of some of the purest love ever depicted in cinema – and probably what inspired that one weirdo on the Metro to try and ask you about what book you were reading. It's the most films ever discussed on a mainline episode, and, as it turns out, these movies that can be distilled down into "two people talk for like 90 minutes" are actually some of the densest films the duo has ever faced off against. Just how annoying is Jesse in BEFORE SUNRISE? Is BEFORE SUNSET like TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN? At the end of almost two decades of projecting onto them, do we really want Celine and Jesse to fight BEFORE MIDNIGHT? Most importantly, why do the French suck ass?

How come every time Mark Rooster and I are together we almost never read stories anymore? Oh yeah, it’s because we get too high and start talking about movies and next thing you know — the episode is over. Well, I hope you like a more relaxed episode because it’s nothing serious with me, Mark Rooster, and Alley Cat(Surprise Appearance!), because today we are talking MOVIES. This is the most movies we’ve ever talked about. That’s why we do it LIGHTNING ROUND style! Kinda. November is here and at Berkreviews.com we are covering a new theme on Movie Club of Love Stinks. That means Jonathan (@berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) are focusing on movies where love hurts. Really, this was a time to finally check off the Before Trilogy and throw in one more tragic romance. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 3: Before Midnight (2013) Jonathan, in a predictable twist, picked the third film of the trilogy for week 3. We meet Jesse and Celine nine years on in Greece. Almost two decades have passed since their first meeting on that train bound for Vienna. Inherent spoilers in the details, but how has their relationship evolved. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support
You say you want a revolution. Well, would you settle for this podcast? It may not change the world, but it will teach you why, for movies, the 70’s started in 1967. If you would like to brush up for our next episode here is a list of movies for Trilogies: the original Star Wars trilogy(A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi), the Godfather trilogy, the 'Before" Trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight), the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the Christopher Nolan Batman movies (Batman Begins, the Dark Knight, and the Dark Knight Rises).

Last week we discussed the final installment of one of the greatest trilogies in cinematic history with Before Midnight. And this week we’re doing the same thing…with Bill & Ted Face the Music. We are joined by the wonderful Cody Ziglar (‘The Dark Weeb’). He shares all of his deep insights on buying a new AC unit, Star Wars nerddom, and so much more. Plus we answer a question from the Who Shotline. And, as always, we’ve got ‘Staff Picks.’In news, RIP Chadwick Boseman, The New Mutants comic co-creator is upset at the movie for spelling his name wrong, and John Boyega did not have a good time making the new Star Wars. Please consider supporting the production of Who Shot Ya? by becoming a monthly member at Maximumfun.org/joinStaff Picks:Ify – Hard BallDrea – The Killing of Breonna TaylorAlonso – Women Make Film Series on TCMCody – Class Action ParkWith Ify Nwadiwe, Drea Clark, Alonso Duralde, and Cody Ziglar.
As we cross into 1950, the guys at 1001 by 1 are going to finally to chat about one of the most prolific directors of this era by discussing two of his film in consecutive episodes. That director is Billy Wilder and the first film we’ll be discussing is “Sunset Blvd.”. During the episode, Adam ranks all five films nominated for Best Picture in 1950, Ian doesn’t fall into his normal trap (we’ll explain), and both guys have quite the hot take on the “Die Hard” franchise. And be on the lookout for the first film to be made by 1001 by 1 – the unauthorized biopic on New York Times film critic Bosley Crowther (sure to be a doozy). Also, this week Ian recommends “Stan and Ollie”(currently on Starz) and Adam recommends the entire Linklater “Before” trilogy – Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, (both available on HBO) & Before Midnight (currently available on Starz). Want to suggest a film for us to review on the show? You can support us at patreon.com/1001by1. You can listen to us on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, & Google Play. You can find us on Facebook at facebook.com/1001by1. You can find us on Twitter at twitter.com/1001by1. You can send us an email at 1001by1@gmail.com. Intro/Outro music is “Bouncy Gypsy Beats” by John Bartmann.
A monumental episode. As you know we’ve been discussing the “Before Trilogy,” written and directed by the wonderful Richard Linklater. And this week we are so lucky to be joined by the man himself – Richard Linklater. He chats with Ify, Drea, and Alonso about the inspiration behind Before Sunrise, working with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, and what he’s been doing to kill time during quarantine. Plus, he expresses his feelings about the possibility of making another “Before” film and why he considers Before Midnight a bit of a horror movie. We also do a thorough examination of the previously stated Before Midnight.
