Chabad's Extremist Turn

In April, Israel's Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir toured the United States in his first-ever trip to the country as a government official. Many Jewish groups refused to meet with Ben-Gvir, a follower of Meir Kahane whose extremism stands out even in an Israeli political scene awash in anti-Palestinian racism. But Ben-Gvir was welcomed by Chabad rabbis at Yale in New Haven, in South Florida, as well as at 770 Eastern Parkway, the Chabad headquarters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The latter appearance sparked protests outside 770, which were met with violence by Chabadniks. In particular, a mob chanting “Death to Arabs” chased a female passerby for several blocks, kicking, spitting, and throwing objects at her. Other videos showed Chabadniks lighting a keffiyeh on fire, shoving and kicking members of the Hasidic anti-Zionist group Neturei Karta, and bloodying a female protester (herself a Jewish Israeli). To discuss Chabad's alignment with Ben-Gvir, its long-standing antipathy to leftist movements, and its uneasy relations within Crown Heights, Jewish Currents editor-in-chief Arielle Angel spoke with Jewish studies scholars Shaul Magid and Hadas Binyamini. They discuss Chabad's historic anti-Zionism, the quasi-Zionist cultural shifts that have solidified after October 7th, and the tensions the movement is currently navigating between its outreach orientation and its increasingly exclusionary politics. Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).”Texts Mentioned and Further Resources:The Rebbe, the Messiah, and the Scandal of Orthodox Indifference, David Berger“Israel's Class War Conservatives,” Joshua Leifer, Jewish Currents “The three-decade saga that led to the Crown Heights tunnels,” Chananya Groner, The Guardian“The Happy-Go-Lucky Jewish Group That Connects Trump and Putin,” Ben Schreckinger, PoliticoLetter to Hitler from the German Free Association for the Interests of Orthodox Jewry, 1933“Lubavitcher Hassidim Oppose Public Demonstrations on Behalf of Soviet Jews,” JTA“The New Heimish Populism,” Joshua Leifer, Jewish CurrentsRace and Religion Among the Chosen...

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.public.newsBen Schreckinger is an old-fashioned investigative journalist with Politico who wrote the best book on Joe Biden. Schreckinger's book is called, simply, The Bidens. Hachette published the book in 2021. “It got a fair amount of attention in the conservative press,” he told me recently, “but in terms of mainstream media attention, it was pretty muted. It was inconvenient for a lot of media outlets to have a more unvarnished look at these business dealings. It was the first mainstream book to say that the [Hunter Biden] laptop was largely genuine.”In truth, the book shows that Joe Biden has been involved in shady influence-peddling his entire career. While intense focus has rightly been paid to the Biden family's influence peddling with America's foreign adversaries, the evidence assembled by Schreckinger suggests that Biden owes his political career to election interference by the mafia.

The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (06/11/2024): 3:05pm- A jury in Wilmington, Delaware has found Hunter Biden guilty on three felony charges related to lying on a background-check he submitted when acquiring a firearm in October of 2018. According to reports, the president's son could face up to 25-years in prison and a fine up to $750,000. Could President Joe Biden pardon his son—and would that potentially impact his status as the Democrat Party's 2024 presidential nominee? 3:30pm- In a new article for Politico, Ben Schreckinger documents the numerous connections between Joe Biden aides and the Biden family's business. He writes: “For years, Joe Biden shared a bookkeeper with his son, Hunter. He also shared a personal lawyer with his brother, Jim. And when Jim Biden wanted to know more about one of Hunter Biden's associates, he hired the former head of Joe Biden's Secret Service detail to investigate. Since 2019, Joe Biden has repeatedly distanced himself from his family's business dealings, saying that he has never so much as discussed them with his relatives or with anyone else. But House impeachment inquiry interviews, public records and emails reviewed by POLITICO show that members of his inner circle were regularly enmeshed in those dealings: Many of the president's closest staffers and advisers have doubled as his relatives' business associates, both during and after their stints working for the man at the center of the Biden family orbit.” You can read the full article here: https://www.politico.com/news/2024/06/08/joe-biden-aides-family-business-dealings-00161476 3:40pm- In reaction to President Joe Biden's abysmal approval ratings, statistician Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight suggested that it might be in the Democrat Party's best interest to replace Biden as their 2024 presidential candidate. According to RealClearPolitics polling averages, Biden now trails Donald Trump in all seven key swing states and is only up 2-points in Democrat strongholds like Minnesota and Virginia. 4:05pm- Dr. Victoria Coates—Former Deputy National Security Advisor & the Vice President of the Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to recap the European Parliament elections which saw right-leaning parties perform particularly well. The results led to French President Emmanuel Macron calling for a snap legislative election. Plus, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has stated that there should be a universal ban on fossil fuel advertisements in order to protect “green energy” from criticism. Dr. Coates is the author of: “David's Sling: A History of Democracy in Ten Works of Art.” You can find her book here: https://www.amazon.com/Davids-Sling-History-Democracy-Works/dp/1594037213. 4:30pm- Caroline Sunshine—Deputy Director of Communications for the 2024 Trump Campaign—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss a jury in Wilmington, Delaware finding Hunter Biden guilty on three felony charges related to the purchase of a firearm in October of 2018. Plus, Sunshine reacts to polling previewing the 2024 presidential election, as well as President Biden's backwards economic policies. She jokes: “Joe Biden is a few French fries short of a Happy Meal.” 4:50pm- Rich reveals that he never got to select his own show's theme tune. Matt nearly gets fired when he suggests it should be changed to “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” by Wham! He played the song yesterday and was endlessly yelled at by both Rich and the audience… 5:05pm- A jury in Wilmington, Delaware has found Hunter Biden guilty on three felony charges related to lying on a background-check he submitted when acquiring a firearm in October of 2018. Following the trial, Juror #10 spoke with CNN—explaining that he never considered that Hunter was the son of the president of the United States. 6:40pm- When asked about the Hunter Biden trial during an interview with Dana Bash on CNN, Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) claimed that her internet connection dropped and could not continue the conversation…perfect timing! 6:50pm- A progressive journalist secretly recorded a conversation she had with Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (03/20/2024): 3:05pm- On Tuesday, the Supreme Court decided to temporarily permit Texas's Senate Bill 4 to take effect pending a lower court's review. The bill makes it a crime for migrants to illegally enter Texas—allowing for Texas officials to arrest and/or deport anyone who recently entered the state unlawfully. However, several hours later a Fifth Circuit panel voted 2 to 1, effectively blocking Texas from enforcing SB 4. Biden's “former business partner Tony Bobulinski publicly accused the first son and his uncle, Jim Biden, of lying under oath about the nature of their business dealings with Chinese conglomerate CEFC,” writes James Lynch of National Review. You can read the full article here: https://www.nationalreview.com/news/former-biden-business-partner-accuses-hunter-jim-of-lying-under-oath-about-chinese-dealings/ 3:20pm- During his testimony before the House Oversight Committee, former Hunter Biden business partner Tony Bobulinski said that he was “1,000% sure” that Joe Biden was the “big guy” referred to in several email communications regarding a business deal with a Chinese-based energy corporation—suggesting that Joe may have derived some financial benefit from his family's foreign business transactions. 3:30pm- Ben Schreckinger of Politico reports: “Prosecutors said a business associate of Jim Biden conspired to defraud Medicare alongside an alleged leader of the Colombo crime family in a brief filed Friday in federal court in New Jersey. The government's accusation is likely to intensify scrutiny of the ties between President Joe Biden's brother and the associate, Mississippi businessman Keaton Langston. The Justice Department named Langston as a co-conspirator in the ongoing fraud case just three weeks after congressional investigators grilled Jim Biden about his relationship with the Mississippi businessman. In the course of a previous prosecution, the Justice Department identified a defendant in the fraud case, Florida businessman Thomas Farese, as a high-ranking member of the Colombo crime family, according to court filings.” You can read the full report here: https://www.politico.com/news/2024/03/18/doj-jim-biden-associate-mafia-boss-00147626 3:50pm- Chick-fil-A pizza? Rich says it sounds repulsive—but Matt and Henry are excited to try it. 4:05pm- Coral Davenport of The New York Times reports: “The Biden administration on Wednesday issued one of the most significant climate regulations in the nation's history, a rule designed to ensure that the majority of new passenger cars and light trucks sold in the United States are all-electric or hybrids by 2032. Nearly three years in the making, the new tailpipe pollution limits from the Environmental Protection Agency would transform the American automobile market. A record 1.2 million electric vehicles rolled off dealers' lots last year, but they made up just 7.6 percent of total U.S. car sales, far from the 56 percent target under the new regulation. An additional 16 percent of new cars sold would be hybrids.” You can read the full report here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/20/climate/biden-phase-out-gas-cars.html 4:10pm- Does cross dressing make you a better intelligence officer? It is the veteran who works as a carpenter. It is the person who works at the Whole Foods that sells sashimi-grade salmon for $44.99 a pound. They all live a precarious life sleeping every night in their cars parked somewhere around Sedona, Ariz. It's become a big problem for the tony tourist town, which is why the Sedona City Council approved a program last week that temporarily converts an empty parking lot into a place where families or workers or students can live while trying to find a permanent home. Earlier this year, New York Judge Arthur F. Engoron found that the former president inflated the value of assets controlled by the Trump Organization in past financial statements. With no jury, Judge Engoron unilaterally chose to fine Trump and barred him from conducting business in New York for three years. Notably, in 2018, while campaigning to become New York Attorney General, Letitia James vowed to “sue” Trump and routinely spoke of how she would like to see him imprisoned—providing evidence to the defense's legal argument that this civil suit was entirely political. 4:50pm- Kate-Gate! Missouri—a case which will determine whether officials within the federal government can use their power to coerce social media platforms into censoring speech they unilaterally deem harmful and/or misinformation. While questioning the U.S. Principal Deputy General Brain Fletcher, Justice Samuel Alito seemed to suggest that government pressuring social media companies to do their bidding is violative of the First Amendment, explaining: “The only reason why this is taking place is because the federal government has got Section 230 and antitrust in its pocket…it's got these big clubs available to it—so it's treating Facebook and these other platforms like they are subordinates. Would you do that to The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal or the Associated Press?” 5:10pm- During oral argument in Murthy v. Missouri, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson voiced concern that ruling against the federal government in this case could result in “hamstringing” their ability to curate speech online—suggesting that the government has a “duty” to police harmful statements. 5:30pm- While appearing at a Mexican restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona, President Joe Biden said of Latino voters: “I need you badly.” According to most polling data, Biden is currently several points behind Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in Arizona. 5:40pm- Are landscape paintings racist? Cancel culture comes for Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Paul Cezanne. 6:05pm- On Wednesday, the House Oversight Committee held a hearing which included testimony from business associates of Hunter Biden. The bill makes it a crime for migrants to illegally enter the United States—allowing for Texas officials to arrest and/or deport anyone who recently entered the state unlawfully. Adam Liptak of The New York Times writes: “The Supreme Court temporarily sided with Texas on Tuesday in its increasingly bitter fight with the Biden administration over immigration policy, allowing an expansive state law to go into effect that makes it a crime for migrants to enter Texas without authorization. As is typical when the court acts on emergency applications, its order gave no reasons. But Justice Amy Coney Barrett, joined by Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh, filed a concurring opinion that seemed to express the majority's bottom line. They were returning the case to an appeals court for a prompt ruling on whether the law should be paused while an appeal moves forward, Justice Barrett wrote. ‘If a decision does not issue soon,' she wrote, ‘the applicants may return to this court.' The three liberal members of the court—Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor—dissented.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/19/us/supreme-court-texas-immigration.html 3:30pm- What is Texas State Bill 4? Maria Mendez of The Texas Tribune writes that the “law would make it a state crime to cross the Texas-Mexico border between ports of entry. If a police officer has probable cause to believe a person illegally crossed the Rio Grande, that person could be charged with a Class B misdemeanor, which carries a punishment of up to six months in jail. For subsequent offenses, the person could be charged with a second-degree felony and face up to 20 years in prison. If the migrant is convicted and has served their sentence, a judge would be required to order police to transport them to a port of entry. A judge could drop the charges if a migrant agrees to return to Mexico, and police could turn over migrant families to Border Patrol agents to avoid separating children from their parents instead of arresting them.” You can read Menendez's full report here: https://www.texastribune.org/2024/03/18/texas-sb-4-immigration-arrest-law/ 3:40pm- Craig Rucker—President of The Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT)—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss a lawsuit his organization, alongside The Heartland Institute, recently filed against the Biden Administration “seeking to overturn their approval of Dominion Energy's plans to start construction of a massive offshore wind project off Virginia that ignores the obvious harm of the endangered North Atlantic right whale. The project consists of the 176 giant wind turbines—each tower taller than the Washington Monument, with turbine blades longer than a football field—to be constructed in the open ocean 25 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. If completed, the project would be the largest of its kind in the world. Democrats and dishonest members of the media took the statement out of context—instead suggesting that Trump had openly called for a “bloodbath”, or a massacre, should he lose. A selectively trimmed nine-second clip was reposted by numerous social media accounts belonging to members of the political left, including: Biden-Harris HQ and Joe Scarborough (who quickly deleted his post). The strategically edited audio inaccurately makes it appear as though Trump is calling for violence. On Monday, morning shows on ABC, CBS, and NBC all promoted the fake narrative as well. 4:10pm- While appearing on Fox News with Jesse Watters, independent journalist Michael Shellenberger warned that progressives, as well as members of the media, have focused on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's “bloodbath” comments as an excuse to censor Trump and his supporters—labeling them collectively as a “violent threat to democracy.” 4:25pm- In a new “opinion video” for The New York Times, journalists Adam Westbrook and Lindsay Crouse attempted to debunk the idea that the deep state is a threat to American civil liberties—and they did so by traveling to Huntsville, Alabama? In the course of a previous prosecution, the Justice Department identified a defendant in the fraud case, Florida businessman Thomas Farese, as a high-ranking member of the Colombo crime family, according to court filings.” You can read the full report here: https://www.politico.com/news/2024/03/18/doj-jim-biden-associate-mafia-boss-00147626 5:50pm- While answering questions from the press aboard Air Force One, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre confirmed that President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama speak with one another often. 6:05pm- Zack Smith—Legal Fellow and Manager of the Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy Program in the Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to temporarily permit Texas's Senate Bill 4 to take effect. The bill makes it a crime for migrants to illegally enter the United States and allows for Texas officials to arrest and/or deport anyone who recently entered the state unlawfully. 6:15pm- On Monday “The Don Lemon Show” released its first episode—which included a long-form interview with billionaire Elon Musk. During the conversation, Lemon accused Musk of inaccurately claiming undocumented migrants can alter election outcomes. Musk then explained that undocumented migrants are counted in the census which can result in blue states receiving greater representation in the House of Representatives. 6:30pm- On Tuesday, the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing on the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Former U.S. Central Command Commander General Kenneth McKenzie and former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair General Mark Milley both testified that there was a severe lack of coordination. Gen. Milley conceded: “I'll be candid. I don't know the exact number of Americans that were left behind” in Afghanistan. 6:50pm- In a recent interview Leslye Headland, writer/producer of the upcoming series “Star Wars: The Acolyte,” explained that one of her goals for the Star Wars franchise is to make it more inclusive. Last year Disney announced a new director for its Star Wars film franchise—Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Obaid-Chinoy has won two Academy Awards for short-films examining injustice in Pakistan, but does that make her the ideal selection for a sci-fi franchise? Obaid-Chinoy said that her goal as a filmmaker has been to “make men uncomfortable,” but aren't most Star Wars fans just looking for an enjoyable two-hour movie? Is Disney destroying the Star Wars franchise?
