How do you create lasting happiness in your life and career? More importantly, how do you take responsibility for it? In this episode of Reflect Forward, I explore why happiness is a worthy goal and why you must take ownership of your well-being. I reflect on my fireside chat with Jenn Lim, CEO of Delivering Happiness and author of Beyond Happiness, to discuss how true happiness is cultivated through purpose, progress, and deep connections—not just quick dopamine hits. Happiness and leadership are closely linked. Unhappy leaders create disengaged teams, while fulfilled leaders inspire innovation and growth. Workplace culture thrives when individuals take ownership of their happiness and well-being. In this episode, Jenn and I explore the mindset shifts and daily habits that help leaders and employees build sustainable happiness, resilience, and fulfillment in work and life. Key Takeaways • Happiness is a choice and a skill. It requires effort, mindset shifts, and intentional action. • Dopamine vs. sustainable happiness. Quick dopamine hits (social media, alcohol, shopping) provide momentary pleasure but do not lead to long-term well-being. True fulfillment comes from purpose, progress, and relationships. • Leadership and happiness are interconnected. When leaders take responsibility for their happiness, they set the tone for an engaged, motivated workplace culture. • Use the “LIT Framework” to define your purpose. Light (what excites you), Impact (how you contribute), and Talent (what you excel at) help align your career and life with what brings fulfillment. • Self-care is a discipline, not a luxury. Leaders and professionals must prioritize their mental, physical, and emotional well-being to show up fully. • Gratitude creates a ripple effect. Regularly expressing gratitude strengthens team culture, improves relationships, and enhances personal happiness. This episode is essential for leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals looking to improve workplace engagement, personal fulfillment, and resilience. Happiness at work leads to higher productivity, stronger collaboration, and a healthier company culture. Employee happiness has been in steady decline since 2020. In an article in Fast Company earlier this week, CEO and author Jenn Lim asked, “Why are employees so glum? They're no longer riding the ‘highs and lows' of their roles but instead shifted to ‘resignation and apathy'” writes Lim. “The true problem with employee engagement isn't a lack of motivation but a disconnect between the employee and the organization's purpose.”  Disengaged teams cost the global economy $8.8 trillion annually, but a massive individual cost exists, as well. “Workers aren't feeling a sense of purpose in their work, unable to see the alignment between their values or connections to what matters most,” Lim says.  As leaders, there are things we can do!   In today's episode, our guest is Jenn Lim. She is a global workplace expert, bestselling author, speaker, executive coach, and the CEO and co-founder of Delivering Happiness [DH], a company that grows purpose-driven organizations with more profitable and sustainable approaches to business. Jenn launched two bestselling books—Delivering Happiness in 2010 and authored Beyond Happiness: How Authentic Leaders Prioritize Purpose and People for Growth and Impact.  [3:40] Why should I listen to you? I just love real talk. I simply prefer to dive in sooner than most people, and I enjoy getting to know people on a personal level. So the only way I think I can do that is by expressing myself from the core. We had meaningful conversations where I learned a lot of things. I learned more about how to implement sustainable scientific happiness in my company.  [5:28] Where did that pop out for you?  I think multiple levels, but the most important is my inner circle. We had to sit and talk to ourselves; some saw this as a good thing, while others saw it as a bad thing. We had conversations about setting the right priorities, doing the right thing, and lots more.  [8:48] Can you break down the birth of this idea?  I launched a book with Tony Shea, the late CEO of zappos.com in 2010 and the book was titled delivering happiness. We didn't have an idea about how well it did and realized there was a demand for happiness in the world. Tony co-founded a company called delivering happiness and the purpose was to help other organizations focus on how to create happy environments for the staff and customers. If there is happiness in an organization, you'll have a more sustainable profitable business. At the end of 2020, I lost my co-founder and one of my best buds. It's not just about sharing all these stories but how we made all these organizations happier, more productive, and more profitable. Right now, it's more than just happiness but reinforcing the perception of happiness.  [12:35] Do you mind sharing some of your lows?  There was a time I lost my job, lost my title, lost my status, 911 happened and in that same year, my dad got diagnosed with stage three colon cancer. I eventually lost my dad and that shaped me into figuring out what is meaningful to me and I found out that it's a misalignment of values. So I shifted from money to the values that are dear and near to me. I had meaningful relationships that got me into the place of exploring. It wasn't even happiness at that time but how to ground and stabilize ourselves in a world that is uncertain and unpredictable.  [15:15] What do you recommend for people who are currently going through their darkest and low moments? When Tony died, the book was already due, but luckily the publisher gave me a little bit more time. But during that time, I was too weak to do anything. I was at my lowest and depressed. When you talk to people about it, they try to cheer you up and recommend some quotes that will help you, but that does not really help. What really helps is picking up a mirror, looking inward, and seeing what you've done in the past when you were at your lowest. Reflect on how you got through those times. So processing and reflecting on your own abilities helps you get your resilience back.  [20:25] How would you define happiness, and then go beyond it?  We kind of base happiness on scientific research and data, and we try to bring academics into real life. What we've learned from that is that there are different types of happiness, including pleasure and all those things related to it. However, the most sustainable form of happiness is purpose. We hear that all the time, so it's basically being part of something bigger than yourself. From a scientific standpoint, there are various ways to increase internal happiness, such as having a sense of autonomy and development. So if you are thinking of what you may do, have more control, more progress, more connections, or enhance that sense of greater purpose.  [23:12] In your journey, did you find something that can also lead to happiness?  When I completed the book, it was a moment of pride. I was able to complete it in an honorable way, which is like an achievement, and that is a natural part of what we want to do as human beings. It's just good to look at what you've accomplished and be proud of yourself.  [31:03] What has the work turned into over time?   We are still helping organizations, companies, governments, and hospitals around the world implement change. One of the silver liners is that we can now embed conversations about mental health. The last few years have deepened the stuff that we've done so that people understand that it's not just rainbows and unicorns. People want to show up as themselves. Authenticity is the number one happiness and then we feel that sense of progress and purpose and how we can do that on a day-to-day basis. A lot of people are obsessed with leaving a legacy, and to me, that's not what it's all about. It's living the legacy today instead of thinking about what you're going to leave behind.  [36:30] What are you passionate about now?  The last three years have been pretty much about getting better. Right now, we are looking at the outlook. There have been talks of an impending recession, and there will be some unexpected events this year. But what I think is cool about this particular time is that people are more ready and open than ever to being curious, courageous, and creative about themselves. Humanity is more ready than ever to receive something more than usual. We are ready to receive ourselves and each other.  [41:50] What promise did God make to the world when he created you?  I will have the opportunity and the choice to show up and be who I was born to be.  Key Quotes [30:40-30:43] The more you exude yourself, the more growth within yourself  [42:35-42:40] The greatest gift you can have is to have a deeper understanding of yourself as God our Creator meant it.    How to connect with Jenn Lim Website: https://www.deliveringhappiness.com/jenn-lim  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/byjennlim/?hl=en Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/byJennLim/

In this episode, Jenn joins Nick to talk about the value of instilling a culture of happiness, and why we need to focus upon not just the best for our clients and people, but also ourselves. KEY TAKEAWAYS The best leaders are those who remain curious enough to feel comfortable with exploring a new set of decisions. That is when the greatest growth occurs. These days we have to be far more mindful of the state of the world than ever before. External factors are affecting people far more then they did pre-pandemic. We need to raise our awareness levels. Always celebrate the wins when they happen, but don't take your eyes off what you can fix in the long term to make life easier. Opening up the episode with a brief note on embracing pain and trusting in the process, Jenn notes that when we reckon with pain and discomfort, we make friends with the enemies that they once were. And according to her, that's just the beginning of a long path toward happiness. Jenn goes on to talk about the significance of trust, progress, connectedness, and, most importantly, purpose. When we engage in activities that reinforce our values, we are more likely to decrease the amount of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity in our daily lives. And that goes for the workplace as well. Through her work, Jenn has witnessed so many beautiful stories of people connecting with themselves and their work in deep and meaningful ways. And, as you listen in today, you'll learn that you, too, can join in and experience this great happiness awakening yourself. Jenn Lim is the CEO of Delivering Happiness (DH), a company she and Tony Hsieh (the late CEO of Zappos.com) cofounded to create happier company cultures for a more profitable and sustainable approach to business.  Highlights: “A big part of happiness is not just our highs but it's also our lows…and I did not know that at the time I would be experiencing one of the biggest lows in my life.” [8:45] Jenn Lim reflects upon the loss of Tony Hsieh during the publishing of her book, Beyond Happiness. “I started doing really purposeful work on how you can create organizations with scientific happiness, positive psychology, and be profitable too.” [12:50] After a series of profound life events, Jenn experienced a shift where her work with Tony Hseih and Delivering Happiness began. “A sense of authentic self, pleasure and higher purpose are essentially the three elements of happiness.” [14:05] Jenn provides a brief definition of happiness and Marcel challenges the meaning of the book title, Beyond Happiness. Going beyond creates deeper conversation on the highs and lows, mental health, and “shadow sides”. “Did the pandemic affect how we were able to connect and relate to each other and raise our happiness? We are kind of post-pandemic now, but we're never really past it. So how has that changed how we should look at happiness and business?” [18:27] Marcel brings a connection to the pandemic...the time in which Jenn was working on the book. Jenn comments on how we are seeing that shift in attention to happiness with the “Great Resignation”, what she refers to as a “Great Awakening”. “They realized their whole entire purpose, which was to ripple out impact and happiness, to their customers and community.” [23:30] Mountain View Egypt is a client of Delivering Happiness, Jenn shares their journey in and outcome in shifting their practices surrounding culture and happiness in their business.  “If you think about these different levels of happiness all of us as leaders can embed these things in our systems and know that if we give people more autonomy; we give people more sense of progress and connectedness and a higher purpose that they align to their personal purpose. That's where the magic happens. ” [27:00] What can leaders do to improve happiness in their organization? Jenn discusses the impact that can happen.  “It's great to have a mission statement on the wall, but what does it actually mean?” [29:00] Jenn challenges leaders to hone and develop their purpose and how they are embedding these practices of happiness by attaching meaning and value to their people's work.  Mentioned in this episode: Jenn Lim Beyond Happiness: Inside the Book Jenn Lim - Emeryville, California, United States | Professional Profile | LinkedIn  Mountain View

My guest this week is delivering happiness every day. Jenn Lim is an inspiration to me and soon, will be to you too.   When Jenn was in college and decided to change her major, against some advice, she wandered into other studies and changed gears, telling herself, "I'm gonna do this for myself".   Because she was curious and industrious, she eventually created an opening in the business world and was off to the races…until.   After some early experiences in the DOT com boom and a series of unpredictable events, she saw a demand for happiness in the world, and decided to do something about it.    A company around happiness. How cool is that?   She asked herself:   Why am I chasing these things that really don't mean that much? Aren't freedom, authenticity, and relationships more important?   She wanted to live and work with a heartful mind and a mindful heart.   What advice does she have for those looking for a great life/career:   Is this how I want to spend the minutes in my day? What are your values? What's your purpose?   Ask yourself these questions; you know.   When applying for any role, remember: it's a social contract; one that benefits you and the company equally to save time, money, and energy. Finally, use curiosity more! Ask questions of yourself and others; questions can be more powerful than answers.   More about Jenn: Jenn Lim is the bestselling author of Beyond Happiness, and the CEO of Delivering Happiness [DH], a company she and Tony Hsieh [the late CEO of Zappos.com] cofounded to create happier company cultures for a more profitable and sustainable approach to business. DH has worked with or spoken at more than 400 companies and organizations worldwide, including Starbucks, Sallie Mae, Lockheed Martin, Zoom, Northwell Health, and more. In her new bestselling book, Beyond Happiness: How Authentic Leaders Prioritize Purpose and People for Growth and Impact, Jenn draws on her decades of experience in culture and strategy to translate it into a practical “how-to” framework so workplaces can adapt quicker, couple purpose and profits, and modernize org design to the Great Resignation and Great Awakening. As a result, she guides all of us—no matter our title or role—on how to live more meaningful lives through the work we do every day. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 89% of people said their work life was getting worse and only 2% rated their own well-being as “excellent”. In this episode Jennifer Moss takes us through her new book "The Burnout Epidemic" and shares what leaders can do to remedy chronic stress and burnout Spoiler alert: it's the responsibility of the organization, not just the individual! Jennifer explains the six root causes of burnout and what employers can do to address them. She also emphasizes that while self-care (like yoga, meditation, etc) are important to help individuals optimize performance, those things are not the solution to burnout. Moss tells us why burnout isn't a problem that should be left for the individual to solve, but rather most of the causes and solutions are the responsibility of organizations.  Interested in  reading "The Burnout Epidemic?" In this episode, DH co-founder and CEO Jenn Lim joins us to discuss her new book "Beyond Happiness".  Jenn shares insights from the new book which picks up where Delivering Happiness left off and provides examples and models of how we can go beyond our own internal happiness and have a greater "ROI" (Ripple of Impact). Jenn recalls the process of writing the book and how the death of Tony Hsieh impacted that process and the book. She also shares why it's important to not only highlight our strengths and high points in life but also our lows and our shadow sides so we can learn from the difficult moments. Jenn also discusses the difference between companies that view people as an expense vs. an investment and provides examples of companies who invested in their people during the pandemic. We talk about some of the activities provided in her book, specifically one where she compares living a life where you're writing a resume vs. writing a eulogy. Finally, Jenn explains the "Greenhouse" model and what elements are necessary for leaders to effectively tend to their own greenhouses while growing others. All of us at Delivering Happiness were shocked and heartbroken at the passing of our Co-Founder, friend, and catalyst of the Delivering Happiness movement, Tony Hsieh. Tony was all about community and connectedness, so what better way to honor him than to talk about his ripple of impact with two of his best friends, Alfred Lin and Fred Mossler? Along with our  CEO Jenn Lim, Alfred and Fred discuss Tony's legacy including what they learned from him, what made him unique, funny, and human. Alfred Lin is a venture capitalist & partner at sequoia capital. He & Tony met as undergraduates at Harvard & went on to work together at Link Exchange and then Zappos where Alfred served as COO and CFOFred Mossler met Tony when he left Nordstrom's to join Zappos in 1999 where he was initially the senior vice president of merchandising and eventually moved up to take the official title of “No Title” at Zappos for the next 15 years. Since then, Fred has been an entrepreneur focusing on the Las Vegas Downtown revitalization project he & tony started, The Life is good Music Festival, and numerous  non-profit philanthropies. One of the most important elements of Delivering Happiness, first and foremost, is to be true to your (weird) authentic self.Tony was so many things to so many people, as it shows in every tribute and memory that have been shared across the media. but the one thing consistent throughout all that was he was fiercely true to himself, while architecting greenhouses for everyone to be true to themselves too. From tears to laughter, we've reminisced about Tony, where DH started and where it is today. From launching the book to evolving it into a company, everyone was feeling his impact within themselves and the gratitude that we get to share this ripple of impact from our authentic selves out to the world. Messages have been pouring in from around the world, from people living all different facets of life. Tony treated everyone equally and will also be remembered for living our core value of “change the world more than you ever thought possible.” He has irreversibly changed it.Rest in peace & happiness, Tony.

This is the second part of an informal and miniseries looking at leadership and culture. Last week we heard from Jeff Thompson, CEO emeritus of Gundersen Health, and this week I'm talking to Jenn Lim of Delivering Happiness. Jenn is the Co-founder, CEO and Chief Happiness Officer at Delivering Happiness, an organization built to help companies understand the importance of, and then build strategies around, happiness and employee satisfaction. A lot of this came out of Zappos, which has a remarkable story about company culture and customer satisfaction and - ultimately - business success. Her team spends a lot of time working with healthcare organizations, and the healthcare community is looking more closely at the ideas Jenn and her team bring to the table. In this conversation, we look at case studies such as Northwell Health to show the value of a strong culture in healthcare.
