Josephine Johnson is an artist unafraid to live out her dreams. Her brand of soulful, earthy, and transcendent folk feels tender, hitting close-to-the-skin, while at the same time clearly dredged from somewhere very deep. Her voice is both vulnerable and powerful, reminiscent of the gritty sincerity of Karen Dalton and the loose, all-in heart of Janis Joplin, but with a refinement and ease of delivery that sets Johnson's voice apart from other celebrated female folk artists.  Johnson knows who she is, and in her music presents herself and her ideas with a calm strength – like someone who has spent long hours on the road alone, working problems and dreams into convictions as time passes. You can hear it in her voice: You can call me vinegar/ but I know I'm wine/ I'm dark, sophisticated,/ warm, deeply sublime. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/support

Art & Wick's inception began when we (Christian and Amy) met during a Kennesaw State University Music Class. Our professor suggested that we work together to play background music for a Christmas event on campus. During our first rehearsal, we jumped right into playing the music without even really knowing each other. Instantly we realized that our ability to tell a story through sound was stronger when we worked together. Over time, we started writing music in a way neither of us could have achieved on our own. Truth be told, our tastes in music are almost opposite in some regards, but these differences pushed each of us to learn to listen more intently and grow deeper as artists in our respective crafts. We chose to keep writing, keep editing, and keep crafting until we were both fully content with the final record… and through the process became family. Inspired by nature, we are passionate about authenticity, artistry, and Hope. We are so grateful to be able to write and play music together, and can't wait to cut another record! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/support

Roy Saunders is a Southern musician who blends the sounds of country, southern rock and blues. Certain obvious influences stand out including The Highwaymen, Cody Jinx, and Blackberry Smoke. Add in a little family style flavor of The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd and you've got a distinctly original southern sound.   Born in the mountains of North Georgia, his musical heritage goes back to North Florida with his grandfather, a professional popular pianist and Musician's Union president, and father, a touring guitarist and recording artist.   Self taught, Roy formed the Atlanta based band 11th Night in 2012 with his brother, Ryan. He then moved to Savannah where he co-founded the Garth Brooks style duo "Escaping Fate," with low country legend and musical mainstay, Jay Morelock.   While in Savannah, Roy opened for, Ian McLagan, international touring artist Hannah Wicklund and the Steppin Stones, People's Blues of Richmond, Zack Myers of Shinedown fame, and Austin Webb.   Now based in Atlanta, Roy played 150 shows in five states in the past year alone. He also released his swampy original single ‘Stranger' on streaming platforms with an EP to follow in 2020.   Roy has built a full band featuring guitarist Jay Morelock on guitar, his father Steven Saunders on bass and seasoned percussionist Tom Dickenson. The group recently performed at Shezmu Cellars in Marietta, GA to promote the single ‘Stranger.'   2020 sees Roy booking at new venues, working on more recordings and scheduling a pending southeastern U.S. fall tour. Sometimes when the conditions are just right groovy magic happens. It was just this kind of magical chemistry that began brewing in the winter of 2011, when Tommy & Silvia Davis first met at an open mic in Chattanooga, TN. Silvia, a homegrown singer/songwriter from Michigan quickly caught the attention of Tommy Davis a local N. Georgia award winning singer/songwriter originally from the coal mining state of West Virginia. The two were instantly impressed by the others talent and style. Each recognizing the similarities between them. The draw was inevitable, and a friendship was naturally established.    The attraction between the two was undeniable and Tommy asked Silvia if she would be interested in getting together to work on some harmonies. She enthusiastically agreed and shortly thereafter their relationship evolved both musically and romantically. Blending their talents and their lives together they became the “Trailer Hippies”.  Then in September of 2017 at Tommy's family home in the beautiful hills of West Virginia the Trailer Hippies got hitched and currently reside in their trailer in the woods in Chatsworth, Georgia. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/support

Born and raised in the Deep South, country crossover singer/songwriter Trey Odum is the perfect combination of southern charm, a powerful voice and a unique songwriting philosophy. While Odum credits his current city, Phoenix, AZ, with re-sparking his love of country music and launching his career, he will always be a southern boy at heart. Throughout his career, he has been influenced by country greats such as Keith Urban, Eric Church, and Brooks and Dunn. However, rock has also been a strong musical inspiration for Trey, helping to shape his unique style. “One of the aspects I love most about country music is its flexibility. It is open to so many perspectives and is ever evolving and changing in different directions at the same time. I am constantly inspired by the country artists, but I want to find my own unique inspiration and stamp on music as well,” explains Trey. Trey was born in Dothan, Alabama and moved to Macon, Georgia at age 9 where he sang for the first time in his church choir. At age 16, Trey's parents bought him his first guitar for Christmas. A multi-instrumentalist, Trey learned most of the instruments he plays by ear, having never formally taken lessons. "I believe that mostly teaching myself really has opened me up to a bigger world of instrumental possibilities, both in the studio and on stage." Trey and his band perform all across the Phoenix valley and surrounding areas, traveling across state lines and even the U.S. Border as long as there's a crowd to play to. In his spare time, Trey loves camping and spending time outside. He is an avid hunter and fisherman. However, his great passion in life is playing the guitar and writing music. “My songwriting style is very honest. I like to tell stories and write about what I know. It is not about always being happy or always being deep, it's just about being real.” In like fashion, Trey and his band have a reputation for turning a country show into a rock concert on any night. "We want to play music that speaks to us, and that both we and the crowd enjoy. That way, everyone has a great time. We always want to make sure everyone in the room feels like a part of the party." He is currently working on releasing his debut album. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/support

The Revenue Man's debut release may be called 25 Years Behind, but the man himself, aka Glenn Brown—packs years of wisdom into these songs. Spanning from an unwelcome family legacy, romantic nostalgia, and even an Elvis Costello classic, these new songs bring in the best of the past. The album is set for release on March 6, 2020, along with the video for “Tennessee Sunset” that aims to be the arrow to fans' hearts.    The first thing you notice on 25 Years Behind, is Brown's voice, solid and reassuring with a tinge of heartbreak. Perhaps, this is why at times, he claims to sound like a beardless Cody Jinks, a country Jason Mraz, and his use of the timeless phrasing of the legendary John Anderson. The next thing you will hear is, as a writer, is that Glenn knows that songwriting is all about perspective. He gives it to you in black and white with no regret or shame from all angles. But mainly from the heart.  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/support

Welcome this week's special guest Kelley Bostian. Kelley came by the Bird's Nest and we talked music, life, and so much more. He even played us a few songs. If you don't know Kelley, Like most musical artists in the 21st century, I first cut my teeth in the music industry with a fairly awful garage band. I was 16-years-old and one of my good friends approached me with an unexpected question: “hey man, I'm starting up a pop-punk band. Do you want to play bass?” Of course, despite having no musical experience or previous ambitions to ever play music, I said yes. Now, nine years later, I've found that music is one of the most important parts of my life. However, the transition from a shitty high school pop-punk bass player to a solo acoustic folk artist wasn't exactly a streamlined process. Without writing a novel, the answer can be boiled down to one major musical inspiration of mine — The Avett Brothers. After I graduated high school in the Spring of 2013, I attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga that same Fall. The summer between this transition process was, like any good high school graduation movie, a very weird time in my life. My garage band, “A Royal Skyline,” had to unfortunately split up; It was a devastating glimpse of reality at the time, but, in retrospect, I'm glad it happened. I used the few months of free time to try and start learning guitar, something I had acquired interest in from watching local talent at the countless house shows and talent competitions my high school band had played. For some odd reason (either musical intuition or pure boredom) I caught on to guitar faster than most novice learners. I quickly sold my bass for upgraded guitar equipment and started becoming infatuated with learning acoustic versions of pop-punk songs I already knew how to play on bass. When I started my college journey in 2013, I was coincidentally introduced to a band by the name of the Avett Brothers by a dorm mate. It was something new to me: I grew up in Nashville my entire life and hated country music, but I didn't know that acoustic folk/Americana, what the Avett Brothers embody so well, even existed. And so, throughout my time in Chattanooga, I simultaneously practiced more advanced guitar techniques while exploring the genre of acoustic folk like a kid in a candy shop. In my senior year of college, I formed an acoustic duo with a fellow English Major by the name of Logan Wilson. We both had similarly passionate interests in the genre, specifically in our love for artists like The Avetts, Simon and Garfunkel, Chris Thile, and The Milk Carton Kids. After a few months just playing for fun, we decided to start playing shows as a cover band, which was around the time I was wrapping up my undergraduate degree. In 2017, I got a BA in Rhetoric and Professional Writing, but I also formed an official duo with Logan under the name “The Papaws.” At this point, we were about as polished as two early twenty-year-old could be, and we decided to write and record some original music. In 2018, we published a self-titled EP under the name “The Papaws” and started picking up steam in the Chattanooga music scene. This was also when I made the decision that I would be moving to Georgia to pursue graduate studies in English. Of course, this put an end to “The Papaws” as a Chattanooga musical act, but it also made me realize that I had the unique opportunity to move to a new area and form a fresh musical identity as a singer/songwriter. And so, that's where my story currently sits. As I have a year(ish) left in my graduate program, I'm simultaneously working passionately towards the release of my first solo EP. All of my experiences, from high school to the Chattanooga music scene, have formed a unique acoustic sound that I can't exactly fit into one single genre. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/support

www.clarecunninghammusic.com Instagram@Clareofficial Dubbed as having a vocal register similar to Adele (GAFFA) and for having a ‘Powerful and killer voice' from Lzzy Hale (Halestorm) and Phil Campbell (Motörhead) it's no wonder Clare Cunningham is making waves across the world with her music. Storytelling with unwavering honesty is what Cunningham is best at, and this little rock/pop chick has proven she is a multi versatile recording and live artist, singing across many genres.   Cunningham, who was raised in Collon, the smallest village in Ireland, had a flare for music and singing from a very young age. At just 5 she exclaimed ‘I want to be a rock star when I grow up' and she did just that! By the time Cunningham turned 6 she started learning classical piano playing Mozart by the age of 8 and continued to do so for the following 10 years until she picked up the guitar and self taught at the age of 16. This was the start of her budding song-writing career. She was highly praised by Irelands own singer songwriter ‘Juliet Turner' and spent the week at a song-writing camp hosted by Turner herself. She saw the natural talent Cunningham possessed for writing and told her this was most definitely the path she needed to embark on.   Cunningham took Turner's advice and moved to Dublin after high school where she secured a national diploma in Popular Music performance and technology.   With this at hand she then headed overseas and studied at the ‘London College of music' (Vocal Tech) where Cunningham had her first TV appearance on ‘Sky TV' singing one of her own penned songs.   Graduating with a BA Hon's Degree in Music Performance and Technology, Cunningham moved to Cardiff, Wales UK where she started up her own business and become a professional singer. She created a 70's classic rock line up called ‘Smokin Aces', who were both a covers and originals band and were very popular all across the country. It was thanks to ‘Smokin Aces' and Cunningham's decision to put up some material onto YouTube which landed her the position of lead singer for the very successful Swedish all female rock quintet ‘Thundermother'. The five hard-core rock chicks had major success in the rock charts and landed a signing with ‘Warner Music' Sweden for their first album ‘Rock n Roll Disaster.' A signing with ‘Despotz Records' (Sweden) then followed the release of their second album ‘Road Fever' gaining support from artists such as ‘Mötorhead, Airbourne, D.A.D, Zakk Wylde, Halestorm, Michael Monroe, In Flames, Opeth, Danko Jones and many more, touring all over Europe and playing some of the biggest European festivals including ‘Sweden Rock Festival', ‘Bravalla', ‘Alcatraz', ‘Getaway Rock Festival' and many more. Cunningham decided to leave Thundermother in January 2017 and is now putting all her focus on her solo career. Cunningham released her self -titled debut solo EP in November 2016, with ‘Low Medium High Records' selling copies all over the world and is just a taste of what Cunningham can do. She isn't afraid to tell the truth, get raw and use the spirits of country, folk and rock when it serves her greater purpose. Clare now resides in the USA (Nashville mainly) where she is taking it by storm having already played at 'The Nantucket Project' (2018) and at world renowned 'Sundance film Festival' (2019)   She had a song placement in a Lionsgate movie (Bernie the Dolphin 2) in December 2019. And shortly after signed with Symphonic Distribution in January to start releasing her newer material for 2020.   Clare is currently recording her upcoming solo EP at iconic RCA studios, on music row in Nashville. The band on the recording consist of Audley Freed on Guitar (Sheryl Crowe, Dixie Chicks, Black Crowe's, Joe Perry) Steve Mackey on bass (Garth Brooke's, Dolly Parton) and Jared Kneele on drums (Lauren Daigle, Kacey Musgraves) Set to release very soon so stay tuned. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/support

Her mom says "she sang before she talked and danced before she walked".  There has always been a spark and love for music in her heart.  Now, being able to learn piano, guitar and ukulele, and learn how to use her voice, she has been writing more original music for her solo gig as Jennifer Barger (@jenniferbargermusic)!   In 2016 she and her sister competed in a local GA competition at which the sister duo "Jenny & Sky" was born. They made it to the finals at the Madlife Stage & Studios "Undiscovered Artists Showcase" (2016-2017), and through that met some amazing people and musicians!  Jenny & Sky performed locally in North GA/Atl area from 2016 till spring 2019 and recorded an EP ("Nonsense" by Jenny & Sky) and were honored to work with amazing artists such as Kate Coleman, Highbeams, and opened for Irish singer-songwriter Keith Harkin.  Since May 2019 (after Sky's wedding and move over seas), Jennifer has performed solo and has continued collaborating and working with talented local artists such as Jonathan Peyton, Danny Brewer, again with Kate Coleman and Highbeams, and others!   Now, fall 2019, she is in the studio recording a lullaby album, and also hosting a new video series called "The Tiny House Sessions" (@thetinyhousesessions) which is an opportunity for local artists to work on music collaborations and share their original music and upcoming projects with the world!  The road has seemed uncertain at times, but with God's help and the encouragement of her family and friends, she is ready to share the true love, joy and passion she has for music with others.  Thank you for joining her journey!  Hope you enjoy the ride. -- Jennifer Barger Music jenniferbarger.music@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/jennafifimusic/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/support

Thomas Hinds is a singer/songwriter out of the four corners area of New Mexico, he has been playing and writing since high school, life has given him the opportunity to get out and support his new album Resurrection Road. Resurrection Road is his third independant release, record at Kitchen Sink Studios in Santa Fe, New Mexico with Jono Manson behind the board. This release is a step forward in letting the songs speak for themselves, a stripped down collection of thirteen tracks that show you the bones that inspire the stories found on this record. Thomas will be on the road most of 2019, Thomas has a catalog of originals that reflect a life filled with love, loss, and the phases of heartache. Hinds' first release Ghosts and Lamentations was released in 2015, then in late 2017 he released an EP titled Barbwire Bouquet with two songs recorded with Jono on that release, Keep On and a reworked Favorite Hello that was originally on Ghosts and Lamentations, who according to Jeffrey Foucault, "showed a lot of growth in the Songwriting. "So, now with Resurrection Road a step towards solidifying his writing ability with a touch of Ray Lamontagne and Steve Earle in the fabric of the songs stretching out in this collection. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/support

Episode 19: Matthew Schwartz from Pacifico. Live at " the Bird's Nest"

Despite first impressions, Pacifico is not an ordinary band. At its most tangible, Pacifico exists in the world as an audible collage: a musical patchwork slowly pieced together by a revolving door of both established and roaming musicians, each adding a unique, artistic inch to the project at hand. But if you didn't know any of that, you might label it as the surprisingly well rounded solo project of one musician: a guy named Matthew Schwartz. Pacifico was originally formed in 1999 and made notable marks in their career having their songs featured in movies (Wish For Christmas), on TV shows (Now What?, Sausage Factory), in video games (Rock Band Download), and on the radio. Additionally, their music video for “xMultiplyx” played on MTV and FUSE. However, after many years touring, recording demos, and playing showcases, the band parted ways. It was then that Matthew decided to take Pacifico into a less committed approach, which allowed him to work with artists he wouldn't have previously been able to collaborate with. Pacifico, now with a new focus, started to record songs and release them independently. Matthew has since been finally able to self-release two full-length albums, Thin Skin And An Open Heart where he collaborated with Jason Martin (Starflyer 59), Steven Dial (Project 86), and Sam West (Stavesacre), and Without Heroes, collaborating with Jesse Sprinkle of Poor Old Lu. For his new album and third full-length, Everest, Matthew decided to collaborate with Ronnie Martin (Joy Electric) for his analog synth skills. He also collaborated with published poet Vincent Cellucci for the lyrics, and Trey Wadsworth (Adult Swim) on the artwork. Everest has taken 3 and a half years, 5 studios and 12 musicians to create. With a more complex song structure, emotionally poetic lyrics and a new musical territory. Everest was certainly a hard climb, but what you see at the top is an honest, earnest, beautiful, and fun account of life in the 21st century. www.pacificorock.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thegeorgiasongbirds/support
