00:00 - SHOW OPEN00:40 - INTRO - BMW 323Ci - An Affordable E46 3-Series CoupeThe motivation for this episode (other than the fact that the E46 BMW 3-series is a great car) was a 2000 BMW 323Ci with the sport package and a 5-speed manual that I found on my local Craigslist. This is definitely a fun-to-drive, but under-appreciated version of that era's 3-series BMW. That's because many enthusiasts mistakenly believe the smaller 2.5-liter 6-cylinder in the 323Ci is under powered. Well, it may be under powered if you're trying to "win" a track-day lapping session at the local road racing course, but as a fun, affordable daily driver, it's hard to beat this budget BMW sports coupe. 04:55 - What Makes the BMW 323Ci A Bargain for Budget BMW Buyers? With its sleek design, smooth running 6-cylinder inline engine, and luxurious, yet sporty interior, this model continues to be a popular choice for used car enthusiasts today. Here are some of the details: Engine and Drive TrainAcceleration/Braking/HandlingExterior DesignOptions and Interior Layout11:15 - Potential Problems Areas On BMW E46-Series CarsOil Leaks (Oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets) Coolant Leaks (lots of plastic parts that deteriorate) Crankcase Ventilation SystemFront Lower Control Arms in the suspensionWindow Regulators16:30 - The E46 3-Series Has An Active Enthusiast Community The E46 generation has a strong following among BMW enthusiasts, which means there is an active community of owners and resources available. This can be helpful when seeking advice, maintenance tips, or even finding aftermarket upgrades. 17:45- Typical Price Points For The BMW 323Ci$5000-$7000 - Okay to decent "daily drivers" with some issues$7000-$9000 - Good Solid Examples With Low to Medium Mileage$9000-$11,000 - Some of best, low-miles examples will sell in this range. For example, a 2000 BMW 323Ci with manual transmission, 5-speed manual, but no sport package just sold on the Bring-a-Trailer auction site for $11,300. Relevant Links: MotorWeek Review/Road Test of a 2000 BMW 323Ci Coupe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGp1-mQoCpM21:35 - WRAP UP/CLOSE - Model Year 2000 BMW 323CiAny E46 3-series BMW kept in good condition is a sought-after used car due to its strong performance, excellent handling and enduring enthusiast appeal. And the model year 2000 BMW 323Ci represents an outstanding bargain under that E46 3-series umbrella. It has the same stylish exterior design, engaging driving dynamics, and well-appointed interior that make all 3-series cars of that era great, but the 323Ci just does it for a lower price – and in some cases a much lower price, than most of its siblings.

You can get it in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. You can get it with an automatic or a manual transmission. The G35 - the third generation G-series sedan from Infiniti - was completely different. It was based on Nissan's FM or “Front Midship” platform, which allowed for the engine to be pushed back further toward the center of the chassis for better weight distribution and handling. The G35 was designed from the beginning to be a rear-wheel drive car with the superior handling dynamics that rear-wheel drive offers. There was also an all-wheel drive G35x version that featured a rear-biased AWD system. Finally, instead of a 4-cylinder, the G35 was fitted with Nissan's VQ-series 6-cylinder engine for substantially better performance. The G35 was so good, it was named Motortrend's Car of The Year for 2003 and it was also named to Car And Driver's 10-Best list for 2003 and 200404:55 - You Might Want An Infiniti G35 If...You love rear-drive handling dynamicsYou want a fun-to-drive vehicle, but you need to save moneyYou have considered a crossover, but you think it's a bad ideaYou want AWD that offers handling and driving dynamics06:10 - Infiniti G35 DetailsTransmission5-speed automatic was offered initially at launch 6-speed manual became available later in 2003Engine2003-2004 V6 Engine made 260-hp and 260-lb-ft of torque2005-2006 Automatic Transmission G35 engines were rated at 280-hp and 270-lb-ft of torque2005-2006 Manual Transmission G35 Engines were rated at 298-hp and 258-lb-ft of torque2005 and 2006 Manual transmission cars had a slightly different engine versus those fitted with automatics; manual cars had engines fitted with variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust camshafts, whereas automatic cars only have VVT on the intake side. Samsung SDI's deal came a day after its domestic rival, LG Energy Solution Ltd., announced the signing of a similar contract with the same carmaker in what analysts predict to be an about 4 trillion-won (US$3.4 billion) investment. Both companies last year set an ambitious target of 100 percent EVs by decade's end. Now they say the unprecedented EV tax credits, rebates and charging infrastructure funding that's included in the contentious $3.5 trillion reconciliation package could help flip their fleets." says eeNews.net: " As it stands, the measure includes an expansive clean energy tax bill that would increase EV credits. If passed, it could cut the price of some battery-powered cars by as much as a third — boosting EV competitiveness and, in some cases, making them cheaper than combustion-engine automobiles.  The high price of EVs and a dearth of charging options in urban areas are considered by both Uber and Lyft two of the primary obstacles." https://www.eenews.net/articles/uber-lyft-lobby-for-ev-reconciliation-provisions/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM When buying a used electric car, how do you feel about servicing? We also discuss Toyota's facelifted Fortuner and Innova - two cars that had previously lost its way in light of changing consumer demands. A nice one costs roughly RM45,000, and with parts aplenty and accessible, running a 13 year old BMW isn't as expensive or complicated as you might think. We talk about the 3-Series’ humble origins, creating the entire market segment of “sports sedan” and eventually taking part in one of the all time great market wars with Audi and Mercedes Benz. We also talk about the E30 culture, tax, cool swaps we’ve seen, and one of the all time great unsung heroes of motorsport. The BMW 3-Series has become the BMW that people get first, and when you have that spot in a company’s lineup it is immensely important to get it right. This only gets magnified when that company is in the highest echelons of the automotive industry. So how have they done? Well in short, pretty damn well! Critically the BMW 3-Series has been named a world’s best for years. They have continually expanded the lineup from just sedans to coupes, convertibles, and GT’s (because apparently everything needs to be a crossover). They have seen the end of carbureted engines and the growth of EFI, the end of naturally aspirated and the normalization of turbocharging, and you could get them in diesel and hybrid. Also Uncle Jimmy recalls an epic trick on Erik the Producer, we talk about common problems on almost every generation of 3-Series, and we drop a copious amount of our friends names. This special long format episode of Grease the Wheels is sponsored by Guten Parts. Whether you have an Audi, BMW, Mini, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Volvo, SAAB, Land Rover or Volkswagen Guten has the parts that you need. From my plucky E30 Felix to Uncle Jimmy’s twin turbo charged E90 and beyond, Guten parts has hundreds of thousands of parts in their catalogue! So how does Gutenparts.com keep that many parts straight for customers and not constantly be messing up orders? Well you make an extremely intuitive search function that lets you search by all of the normal stuff like make model and year, but also by trim levels which narrows searches down even more and lets them get you the right parts. You don't have to be a professional parts guy, you just have to know your car, and if you're listening to this odds are you probably do! And if you can't find it, shoot them an email or give them a call. They’re pretty cool folks and they're not going to ask you if your car is automatic or manual when you're buying wiper blades. How refreshing! And it's not going to take you months to get your parts because unlike a lot of those other guys, Guten parts has a live inventory and geolocation on all of their orders. That means Guten can same day your parts for any order placed by 2pm because they have warehouses all over the place. GutenParts.com goal is twofold. First, to be the marketplace for quality and unique items. Whether through their own production or by showcasing products from other sources, gutenparts.com is the destination for German car owners. Second, become the location for high quality cars, whether for routine maintenance or sky is the limit custom cars. So if you don't turn a wrench yourself, let the Service part of Guten Parts and service get your classic running right again. Also this episode was made possible by our patreon subscribers. In this very abridged but very much uncut preview, Uncle Jimmy and Erik the Producer talk about how Erik got his first car: a Luxorbeige 1987 BMW E30. Turns out Uncle Jimmy and his sister are major league tricksters, but the worst party foul was Erik’s dad using his car as a straight-6 powered, positraction ski wagon...after dropping Erik off at school. Given all the praise heaped on the BMW 3 Series over the years, we can't blame you for thinking there's more to the story. We've heard all the conspiracy theories, most of them involving checks in large denominations from Munich. This might seem believable to a certain segment of the population, but there's a far less interesting truth behind all those wins: The BMW was the best car. Sure, certain rivals often upped their game in one area or another, but the 3 Series always put it all together in a way that made it better. So now the 2010 Audi S4 is here to take another shot. It's all-new this year and the old V8 is gone. There's now a supercharged V6 in its place, along with a lower price designed to better align the S4 with the BMW 335i. The BMW 3 Series received a face-lift of its own last year. It was mostly minor trim changes and the like, but we're told that iDrive thing was tweaked again, too (oh, lovely). 2010 Audi S4 vs. 2009 BMW 335i Comparison Test: http://www.insideline.com/audi/s4/2010/comparison-test-2010-audi-s4-vs-2009-bmw-335i.html
