Chinese authorities issued guidelines on Friday requiring labels on all artificial intelligence-generated content circulated online, aiming to combat the misuse of AI and the spread of false information. The regulations, jointly issued by the Cyberspace Administration of China, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Public Security, and the National Radio and Television Administration, will take effect on Sept 1. A spokesperson for the Cyberspace Administration said the move aims to "put an end to the misuse of AI generative technologies and the spread of false information." The guidelines stipulate that content generated or synthesized using AI technologies, including texts, images, audios, videos and virtual scenes, must be labeled both visibly and invisibly. For content generated by deep synthesis technologies that might confuse or mislead the public, explicit labels must be placed in a reasonable position to ensure public awareness. Explicit labels are those applied within the generated content or user interface, presented in forms such as text, sound, or graphics that are clearly perceptible to users. Additionally, the guideline requires that implicit labels be added to the metadata of generated content files. These labels should include details about the content's attributes, the service provider's name or code, and content identification numbers. Metadata files are descriptive information embedded in the file's header, recording details about the content's source, attributes and purpose. Service providers that disseminate content online must verify that the metadata of the content files contain implicit AIGC labels, and that users have declared the content as AI-generated or synthesized. Prominent labels should also be added around the content to inform users. AI generative technology has been used to create seemingly realistic content for publicity stunts or commercial gain. For instance, a news report claiming that one in every 20 individuals born in the 1980s had passed away caused a public uproar last month, only to be revealed as a rumor fabricated by AI. AI generative technology has also been used to clone the voices and faces of many celebrities to produce deepfakes, which constitutes infringement and should be subject to legal accountability. Earlier this month, 14th National People's Congress deputy and Xiaomi Corp founder Lei Jun, and 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference member and actor Jin Dong, both proposed establishing laws and regulations for AI-generated content during the annual sessions of the 14th NPC and 14th CPPCC National Committee. Some viewers who like my movies and TV shows have been deceived by deepfake videos that clone my face, which is a very malicious act. I hope relevant rules can be established and enhanced," said Jin Dong during a panel discussion during the two sessions.“一些喜欢我影视作品的观众被克隆我脸的深度伪造视频欺骗,这是一种非常恶意的行为。 Tu Lingbo, a professor at the Communication University of China, told China Daily in a previous interview that the influx of unlabeled content generated by AI could disrupt the internet ecosystem and pose challenges to internet governance. Relevant laws and regulations on AI-generated content should be established and improved," Tu said. combatvt.

President Xi Jinping has reiterated China's commitment to boosting the private sector through concrete efforts to implement supportive policies and measures.Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks on Monday in Beijing at a symposium on private enterprises. The gathering of high-profile participants came years after the previous such symposium was presided over by Xi in 2018.Among the attendees were Huawei's Ren Zhengfei, BYD's Wang Chuanfu, New Hope's Liu Yonghao, Will Semiconductor's Yu Renrong, Unitree Robotics' Wang Xingxing and Xiaomi's Lei Jun. The six business leaders put forward their opinions and advice on the development of the private sector.Speaking to a roomful of senior officials and private entrepreneurs, Xi said the government's basic principles and policies concerning the development of the private economy have been incorporated into the system of socialism with Chinese characteristics and will consistently be upheld and fulfilled."They cannot and will not be changed," he said, noting that obstacles should be removed in order to facilitate private enterprises' equal access to factors of production and market opportunities in accordance with the law.Xi said that as the world's second-largest economy further reforms and opens up, the enormous market with a population of over 1.4 billion will bring new opportunities for the greater development of private enterprises."On the new journey in the new era, the prospects for the development of the private economy are broad and promising. It is a prime time for private enterprises and entrepreneurs to give full play to their capabilities," he said.As of the end of September last year, China had over 55 million registered private companies, accounting for 92.3 percent of all businesses. They contribute more than half of the country's tax revenue, over 60 percent of GDP and over 80 percent of urban employment.Regarding the difficulties and challenges currently facing the private sector's development, Xi said that these have generally emerged during the process of reform and development and industrial transformation."They are partial rather than general, temporary rather than long-term, and surmountable rather than unsolvable," Xi said, stressing the need to stay focused on growth, maintain confidence in development and face up to the challenges with optimism.Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC in 2012, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council have rolled out a series of policies and measures to spur the growth of the private sector.China is also moving closer to its first basic legislation specifically focused on the development of the private sector, as the draft law was submitted to the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress for deliberation in December.During the symposium, Xi also called for continuous efforts to see that the competitive areas of infrastructure are open to market entities in a fair manner, to resolve the difficulties private enterprises face in accessing affordable financing, and to resolve overdue payments to private enterprises. The government will earnestly protect the legitimate rights and interests of private businesses and entrepreneurs in accordance with the law, Xi said. But he noted that China is a socialist country ruled by law, and no type of illegal activities by enterprises, despite their form of ownership, can avoid investigation and punishment.Xi also stressed the role of private enterprises in advancing China's broader goals in terms of technological innovation, promoting rural vitalization and improving people's well-being. He urged entrepreneurs to focus on high-quality development, invest in their main businesses, strengthen their capacities for innovation, and increase their core competitiveness. It is hoped that the vast number of private enterprises and entrepreneurs will take the lead in promoting common prosperity, thus making new and greater contributions to advancing Chinese modernization, he said.reiterate /riˈɪtəˌreɪt/(v.)—— 重申commitment /kəˈmɪtmənt/(n.)—— 承诺,坚定支持boost /buːst/(v.)—— 促进,推动implement /ˈɪmplɪˌmɛnt/(v.)—— 贯彻,实施supportive /səˈpɔːrtɪv/(adj.)—— 支持的,鼓励的

China's latest push to bolster the growth of its private economy is expected to shore up business confidence, stabilize market expectations and revitalize the growth of the world's second-largest economy amid challenges and external uncertainties, said experts and company executives. They noted that the country has sent a clear signal that it is dedicated to boosting the high-quality development of the private economy through rolling out targeted measures to deal with the difficulties and issues faced by private enterprises.Their comments came as President Xi Jinping attended a symposium on Monday on private enterprises in Beijing and delivered an important speech, after listening to representatives of private entrepreneurs.Zhou Maohua, an analyst at China Everbright Bank, said: "The private sector is a vital force in advancing Chinese modernization, and it plays an increasingly significant role in stabilizing economic growth, expanding employment and bolstering technological innovation."Zhou said that a series of supportive measures, which have been introduced to tackle prominent problems facing private enterprises and to improve the business environment, are crucial for boosting confidence and stabilizing the expectations of private enterprises and entrepreneurs, and this will further consolidate the economic recovery trend. He noted that the country's ongoing efforts to promote the healthy development of the private sector will be conducive to creating a more stable, transparent and predictable business environment, motivating private enterprises to beef up investment in research and development, and achieving technological breakthroughs, as well as further stimulating the vitality of the private economy, he added.Liu Dian, a researcher at Fudan University's China Institute, said President Xi's meeting with private entrepreneurs sent a strong signal to the outside world that China attaches great significance to the private economy and is committed to bolstering its high-quality development. He said it is advisable for the government to guide financial institutions to innovate financial products and services, enhance support for boosting technological innovations by private enterprises, encourage private companies' collaboration with universities and research institutions, and accelerate the legislative process for a law to promote development of the private economy.Looking ahead, he said that the country will likely introduce more supportive measures, including further optimizing the business environment, promoting innovative development and fostering fair competition. Specifically, Liu said he expects to see further moves to improve the fiscal, tax and financial policy systems and address the practical difficulties and issues facing private companies.Key driving forcePrivate companies, a key driving force behind China's economic ascent over the past decades, contribute more than 60 percent of gross domestic product, 70 percent of technological innovation and 80 percent of urban employment, official data show.Entrepreneurs hailed the raft of policy measures on boosting support for the private sector, and expressed strong confidence in its future growth.Qi Xiangdong, chairman of cybersecurity company Qi-Anxin Technology Group, who attended the symposium, said in an earlier interview with China Daily that private enterprises have played a significant role in promoting scientific and technological innovation, and fostering the development of new quality productive forces.Qi said they should strive to explore new business models and management methods and bolster the application of technologies, and he emphasized that his company will step up original and pioneering sci-tech innovation, and reinforce fundamental research in artificial intelligence to promote industrial upgrading.Lei Jun, founder, chairman and CEO of China's homegrown tech giant Xiaomi Corp, told China Daily in an earlier interview that the country's moves, such as supporting technological innovation in the private sector and accelerating digital transformation, have boosted the company's confidence and expectations, and it will continue to develop its main business and contribute to the development of the real economy.Wang Peng, an associate research fellow at the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences, said that the private economy is playing a pivotal role in supporting China's overall economic development.Looking forward, Wang said a multipronged approach is needed to address issues faced by private companies, such as expanding financing channels for private enterprises and reducing financing costs, as well as intensifying efforts to further cut taxes and fees in order to lower operational costs.bolster /ˈboʊlstər/ (v.)

Samsung SDI's deal came a day after its domestic rival, LG Energy Solution Ltd., announced the signing of a similar contract with the same carmaker in what analysts predict to be an about 4 trillion-won (US$3.4 billion) investment. Samsung SDI and Stellantis also recently signed a memorandum of understanding on the joint venture to build a battery production plant in the United States, according to the sources. Both companies last year set an ambitious target of 100 percent EVs by decade's end. Now they say the unprecedented EV tax credits, rebates and charging infrastructure funding that's included in the contentious $3.5 trillion reconciliation package could help flip their fleets." says eeNews.net: " As it stands, the measure includes an expansive clean energy tax bill that would increase EV credits. If passed, it could cut the price of some battery-powered cars by as much as a third — boosting EV competitiveness and, in some cases, making them cheaper than combustion-engine automobiles.  The high price of EVs and a dearth of charging options in urban areas are considered by both Uber and Lyft two of the primary obstacles." https://www.eenews.net/articles/uber-lyft-lobby-for-ev-reconciliation-provisions/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM When buying a used electric car, how do you feel about servicing?

According to European product boss Sjoerd Knipping, the Korean brand's second “EVx” car will be a large SUV targeting the US. But more importantly for us, it will be followed by a model developed for the European market – Knipping spoke of “balancing” the US and other territories. - e large SUV could be branded EV7 or EV8, and it will offer seven-seat capability similar to that of Hyundai's Ioniq 7 SUV confirmed for launch in 2024. When the winners are announced at next year's New York International Auto Show, there will be a new category just for battery-electric vehicles. - BEVs will be eligible to win the overall 2022 World Car of the Year award; the rules just require that a car be produced in volumes of at least 10,000 a year. The vehicle must also "be priced below the luxury-car level in their primary markets" and must be available in two major markets (China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America, and the USA) in at least two continents, between January 1, 2021, and March 30, 2022. - Several BEVs are in contention for the top award, including the Audi Q4 e-tron and Q4 e-tron Sportback, BMW i4, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Kia EV6. - Jaguar's I-Pace won overall in 2019, and the Volkswagen ID.4 won overall in 2021; if the Porsche Taycan Turbo had been eligible in 2020, it would probably also have romped home to victory but for the fact that it was too expensive to qualify. No parece haber heridos.

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   KIA EV6 BOASTS 577 HP, 20 MINUTE CHARGING "The EV6 isn't Kia's first electric car, but it is the first to be built on the Hyundai Group's Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), alongside the new Ioniq 5. The EV6 will be offered with either rear- or all-wheel drive and with the choice of two battery capacities." asys Roadshow: "At the top of the lineup is the performance-oriented EV6 GT, which comes standard with the larger 77.4-kilowatt-hour Long Range battery and dual-motor electric all-wheel drive. Combined thrust is estimated at 577 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque. Mat the accelerator and the EV6 GT will sprint to 62 mph in just 3.5 seconds and onward to a top speed of 162 mph. Exclusive to the EV6 GT is an electronic limited-slip differential that improves traction and handling. Keep the battery above a 35% state of charge and the EV6 should also be able to tow up to 3,527 pounds. The entry-level EV6 and GT-Line come standard with a 58-kWh Standard Range battery, stepping two-wheel-drive power down to 168 hp and AWD to 232 hp. Kia estimates that, at best, a single-motor EV6 with the Long Range battery should cruise for up to 317 miles per charge "   "Kia claims that all models, regardless of which battery is optioned, will be capable of charging from 10 to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes when using the 800V ultra-fast charger. And, if the EV6 is specified with the 77.4 kWh battery pack and 2WD, owners will be able to add 100 kilometres of range to the EV in less than four and a half minutes, which Kia says is around the same amount of time it takes to refuel a conventional ICE-powered vehicle." according to WhichCar: "The charging system of the EV6 is also said to move the game on, utilising an Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) that is capable of discharging the car batteries’ power to external devices through a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function.  This V2L function can supply up to 3.6 kW to devices such as a TV or air-conditioning unit, effectively acting as a generator. Kia claims that thanks to the EV6’s long wheelbase, which measures 2,900mm, and the flat-floor design that the EV’s architecture allows for, the result is an interior size similar to a medium to large size SUV. Dual 12-inch curved digital displays blend into one seamless strip across the car’s interior fascia, with one taking the place of a conventional dashboard and the other acting as a touchscreen interface for the infotainment system. Xiaomi will inject an additional $10bn in the next 10 years into its EV business. Other details of the potential plant were undisclosed."   https://www.argusmedia.com/en/news/2200752-chinese-tech-firm-xiaomi-to-develop-electric-vehicles?backToResults=true   AUTO INDUSTRY URGES BIDEN TO BACK ‘COMPREHENSIVE’ EV PLAN The requests, made in a six-page letter dated March 29, come as Biden is set to unveil on Wednesday a $3 trillion or more infrastructure proposal that could include significant support for manufacturing and charging electric vehicles (EVs). The letter from the UAW and two major auto industry trade groups noted there are currently only 1.5 million EVs out of 278 million registered passenger U.S. vehicles.   https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/30/auto-industry-urges-biden-to-back-comprehensive-ev-plan-.html   RIVIAN’S AMAZING NEW WARRANTY Amazon-backed electric SUV maker Rivian is quietly making a name for itself as one of the most exciting newcomers to the electric vehicle market. Not only are its cars looking great, it’s also offering after-sales service that sets a new standard for the industry." reports The NExt Web: "Over the past week, sleuths over on Rivian forums spotted updates to the EV startup’s vehicle warranties, and it has well and truly thrown down the gauntlet to all other manufacturers with its five-year, 60,000-mile comprehensive warranty. According to the company’s website, the comprehensive warranty covers, “The cost of all parts and labor necessary for any defective materials are covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.”"   https://thenextweb.com/shift/2021/03/30/rivians-amazing-new-warranty-should-be-the-standard-for-all-ev-brands/   THE LF-Z CONCEPT SHOWS JUST HOW FAR LEXUS HAS TO GO IN EVS "Toyota is finally following the rest of its peers into making all-electric vehicles, and that now includes its luxury brand, Lexus. On Tuesday, the Japanese marque revealed the LF-Z Electrified concept car, which is all about charting the company’s course into an electric future." says The Verge: "The company said Tuesday it will introduce 20 new vehicles by 2025 and that just 10 of those will be all-electric, hybrid, or run on hydrogen.  The company has played a very conservative hand here at the beginning of what is, by its own admission, a massive transformation in the industry. And while there are certain advantages to that strategy — like not spending dozens of billions of dollars — the LZ-F is a good reminder of some of the disadvantages, too."   https://www.theverge.com/2021/3/30/22357789/lexus-lf-z-electrified-concept-car-ev-toyota-electric   TESLA AND TOYOTA TO REVISIT OLD PARTNERSHIP "A recent report from an esteemed South Korean publication has suggested that Tesla and Toyota are poised to revisit an old partnership to develop an all-new electric vehicle. The partnership has reportedly been under review since last year." according to Teslarati: " the upcoming partnership between Tesla and Toyota would likely result in the development of a small electric SUV. Toyota is reportedly providing the vehicle platform in the partnership, while Tesla will supply some of the EV’s electronic control platform and software."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-toyota-ev-partnership-report/   MERCEDES-BENZ EQS ACHIEVES 4 MI/KWH WITH 0.20 DRAG COEFFICIENT "That’s comparable to the 4.5 mi/kWh Lucid promises the Air will achieve. Tesla and EPA state the Model S Long Range can achieve 402 miles with its 100 kWh battery pack. That translates into a 4.02 mi/kWh energy efficiency if you run your car past the 0 percent warning and until it stops, according to Tesla engineers." says InsideEVs: "The EQS beats that: with more than 435 miles of range – probably according to WLTP standards – for its 108 kWh battery pack, it reaches 4.03 mi/kWh. It’s close to what Tesla offers, but it means more than just that in Mercedes-Benz's case."   https://insideevs.com/news/497543/mercedes-benz-eqs-4-mi-kwh/   FORMULA E UNVEILS ELECTRIC MINI SAFETY CAR FOR SELECT RACES "Formula E will use a modified all-electric Mini as its safety car this season ahead of its parent company BMW quitting the series. This move for the remainder of the 2021 season comes as Mini owner BMW will exit Formula E at the end of the campaign having “essentially exhausted the opportunities" to develop its technologies within the championship." says Motor1: "The Mini Electric Pacesetter has received styling tweaks, including a rear wing and flared wheel arches, that resemble the third iteration of the internal combustion-engined Mini Cooper JCW GP road car.  It is 130kg lighter than the regular Mini Electric but runs the same 182bhp output to accelerate to 62mph in 6.7 seconds, six tenths quicker than the standard car.  "   https://uk.motor1.com/news/497663/mini-safety-car-2021-bmw/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What incentive would make the most difference to you buying an EV?   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PREMIUM PARTNER)     DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DC EV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Pocos quieren un móvil sin cargador: menos del 6% de los primeros pedidos del Xiaomi Mi 11 han sido de la versión "ecológica" La ingeniosa solución de Xiaomi para sortear la polémica del cargador fue ofrecer una versión del Mi 11 con el cargador incluido, al mismo precio.

Welcome to the 84th installment of the Caixin-Sinica Business Brief, a weekly podcast that brings you the most important business stories of the week from China's top source for business and financial news. Produced by Kaiser Kuo of our Sinica Podcast, it features a business news roundup, plus conversations with Caixin reporters and editors. This week: We discuss new data that shows China's economic growth stabilized in the first quarter of 2019, as market confidence recovered on the back of policy support and progress in Sino-U.S. trade war negotiations. We analyze a recent report that says China's stimulus measures may increase corporate debt and reverse progress made in deleveraging the economy. We hear that despite a stimulus cooling, China is still considering new subsidies to encourage household purchases of home appliances as part of a policy package designed to expand domestic consumption. We report that China's pension system is expected to run dry well before that generation retires in 2035. We note that more details have emerged in the new civil lawsuit brought against Chinese billionaire Richard Liu by the woman who accused him of rape last year. We learn that Lei Jun 雷军, the CEO of phone and home-electronics maker Xiaomi, may have received compensation worth over 330 times of that handed to Tencent's head last year. In addition, we talk with Jing Xuan Teng, reporter for Caixin Global, about the child modeling industry in China. We also chat with Doug Young, managing editor of Caixin Global, about the ecommerce titan Amazon, one of the world's biggest companies, and what's going on with it in China.

Alvin's career to date has been an epic adventure, a journey that's taken him across epicenters of technology and the world's three largest internet markets: China, India, and the US. As a Stanford undergrad, he started ThinkBulbs, which developed 2 leading iOS photo apps and amassed over a million users before being acquired by Megatasty Labs. After college, Alvin spent time as EIR at StartX, before joining Flipboard to lead their China entry efforts. That in turn opened his eyes to the torrid growth of China's tech sector, eventually leading to a role as Chief of Staff for Hugo Barra, the legendary Google exec who had been hired by Lei Jun to run Xiaomi Global. Today, Alvin heads up Xiaomi Global's sales operations, and plays a critical role in developing Xiaomi's India business. On our podcast, Alvin talks us through his personal journey, reflecting first on his foundational experiences in Silicon Valley before taking on the Wild Wild West of China's tech sector in the early 2010s. With Alvin, we then conduct a deeper dive on Xiaomi's India strategy. How did Xiaomi grow so quickly in India, reaching #2 market share, with its best selling 'Redmi' shipping over 1m units in just 30 days? What are similarities and differences between China and India? How does Xiaomi approach localization, not only in terms of product but also on its org structure and management approach. Ultimately, what are the keys to success in this market and how will Xiaomi fend off competitors that invariably follow it into an attractive new market? Lastly, Alvin shares his experience on why it's the right time to come out to China (and India), the need for a bridge type leaders between markets, and how to leverage a global perspective to one's advantage. Shunwei’s Meng Xing Says Chinese AI Startups Need Niche Products To Survive And Thrive

To say that Meng Xing, V.P. and entrepreneur-in-residence at Chinese venture firm Shunwei Capital, has been busy would be a gross understatement. Over the past ten years, the 31-year-old venture capitalist and entrepreneur has founded two artificial intelligence (AI) start-ups, selling one, an image recognition AI company, to Amazon and the other to a listed Chinese company. In between, he worked as an investment banker at J.P. Morgan Hong Kong and casino giant Caesars Entertainment, on top of getting an MBA from the Sloan School of Management at MIT. In March 2016, Meng joined Shunwei, a US$2 billion venture firm co-established by Chinese billionaire entrepreneur and Xiaomi Inc's founder Lei Jun. He has so far screened over 200 Chinese AI start-ups and led efforts to invest in nine AI companies during the past year. While Meng's first success was in image recognition, he believes that a stand-alone image recognition type of business popping up in China will face increasing challenges going forward. In order to survive and thrive, Chinese AI companies must focus on a niche vertical industry and create niche products, he says. Rather than simply creating AI technology, they want a company that is applying artificial intelligence for a specific purpose. The industries most likely to create the next great tech companies are financial technology, healthcare, surveillance, agriculture and autonomous driving, in his view. Meng spoke to China Money Network's Nina Xiang on the sidelines of the Montgomery Summit on March 9 in Santa Monica, California. You can listen to our conversation above or read a Q&A below. Don't forget to subscribe to China Money Podcast for free in the iTunes store, or subscribe to China Money Network weekly newsletters. You can also subscribe to China Money Podcast's Youtube channel or Youku channel. Q: Can you give a brief introduction of Shunwei Capital? A: Shunwei was founded in 2011 by Lei Jun and Tuck Lye Koh, together we manage around US$2 billion in assets across three U.S. dollar funds and two RMB funds. Since 2011, we have invested in 200 companies across a lot of sectors including Internet of things devices, financial technology, agriculture, new real estates, and coming-of-age technologies. I personally focus on technology-driven companies, more specifically, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, visual reality and 3D structure, for early-stage funding rounds like series A and series B. Q: You had an interesting career before joining Shunwei. Tell us more about that? A: I started my career as an investment banker at J.P. Morgan Hong Kong in 2007 covering the telecom, media and technology (TMT) sector. Then I started a few companies, but the one that really took off was Orbeus in 2012 when I was getting my MBA at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It was a company based in Boston and we were doing image recognition and object recognition. It was later sold to Amazon in 2015. Then, I joined Caesars Entertainment, an international casino company, and was responsible for their Asian online gaming sector for two years. After Caesars, I founded Cogtu, a start-up that leverages image recognition to build a native advertising network. The company was sold to a listed Chinese Internet company as well. And I joined Shunwei last year. Q: At Shunwei, you invest in AI start-ups. How many companies have you reviewed and what's your overview of these start-ups? A: Probably over 200 companies so far in the broadly defined artificial intelligence field, and we invested in about nine companies last year. When we are screening companies, first we want to know who are the founders. The good ones, or the ones that venture capitalists are chasing, are companies founded by research scientists from top research universities or research department from Google, Facebook and so forth. The problem is that those researchers have a lot of experience publishing ac...

In addition, it suggests that the major form factor redesign that’s been reported on may turn out to be less drastic than some are imagining — although changes will include features like a rear-mounted Touch ID sensor. According to the report, which is accompanied by renders showing the design, the iPhone Edition won’t feature a Touch ID sensor embedded beneath the display, but rather a fingerprint scanner on the rear of the device. In fact, a lot of Apple’s trademarks are about stopping its assets falling into other company’s hands — as happened when rival watchmaker Swatch decided to trademark Steve Jobs’ iconic “One more thing” catchphrase, shortly after Apple began competing with it in the watch business.   Swiss watchmaker hits back at Apple by trademarking ‘One more thing’ http://www.cultofmac.com/385873/swiss-watchmaker-hits-back-at-apple-by-trademarking-one-more-thing/ This isn’t the first time Apple has had people try to pilfer its well-known “One more thing” phrase. At the launch of Apple ripoff artist Xiaomi’ Mi 4 smartphone, CEO Lei Jun “borrowed” Apple’s tagline while also wearing a black top and blue jeans. The trademark was registered in Germany in May, but was granted in 2015. It was originally a quotation by Jobs of Peter Falk’s Columbo character “Stay hungry, stay foolish” - Whole Earth Catalog, a magazine Steve Jobs loved.   20th Anniversary Mac https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twentieth_Anniversary_Macintosh one of the first Macs to be designed by Jony Ive, and it paved the way for the vertical design of computer that forms today's iMacIt looked like a movie prop.  The beautiful machine every 90s CEO would covet. April 1, 1996 marked 20 years since the day that Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne came together to form Apple Computer, and they decided to release the 20th Anniversary Mac to celebrate this momentous occasion. It featured a a TV/FM tuner, an S-Video input card, and a custom-made Bose sound system including two "Jewel” speakers, and a subwoofer built into the externally located power supply "base unit”. Upon unveiling, the TAM was predicted to cost US$9,000, which would include a direct-to-door concierge delivery service. At release the price was reduced to $7,499.  Problem was, it similar performance as the PowerMac 6500, a machine costing just $2,999. In the middle of its sales' lifespan Apple dropped the price further to around US$3,500, and finally upon discontinuation in March 1998 the price was set to US$1,995. Customers who paid full price for the TAM, and then complained to Apple when the price was so drastically cut, were offered a free high-end Powerbook as compensation.     TimeBand It's hard to imagine, but there was actually a time when the Apple freely shared its concepts with the world. In 1991, under the leadership of John Scully, Apple shared a bunch of design concepts with a Japanese magazine called Axis.   One of the strange products included in the spread was a wearable wrist computer called TimeBand. Like an iPad mini living on your wrist!     The beautiful, the portable, Apple PowerCD https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/36/Apple_PowerCD.jpg

0:00 Starting from the last issue of Wired Magazine. The cover features Lei Jun, the CEO of Xiaomi, and the title of that issue says “It’s time to copy China”. Xiaomi’s success is because of its business model and marketing strategy. 13:00 The Internet got lost somewhere, and we didn’t record part of our conversation. So we started talking about other things related to the Chinese market. The new batch of companies from YC 2016 Spring some similar business models from China. Bo says cities in China might be the model of future cities, because they have the most and best resources.30:00 Given the fact that China is so different and unique in so many ways, it seems impossible to copy the O2O business models from China. Bo argues that if the trend is that more people are moving to the cities, big cities like NYC, SF will learn something from the Chinese companies in how they serve large population.41:00 I mentioned Indonesia couple times, and Bo spots that, so we start to talk about emerging market as big opportunities for Chinese companies.

H: AlphaGo's win over one of the world's best Go players has got us wondering about which direction artificial intelligence is heading. Will robots beat humans in areas beyond playing an ancient chess game, or have they already done so? IT industry heavy weights, Jack Ma, Lei Jun and Mark Zuckerberg, have offered their views on the prospects of artificial intelligence at the China Development Forum in Beijing just a couple of days ago. So guys, where are we at right now in terms of artificial intelligence development?N: well, in terms of the story you just mentioned, we’re talking about the computer program AlphaGo which plays the game Go, and it played the game at best five seriesagainst the grandmaster, Lee Sedol, from South Korean, who is one the greatest or the best I think player of the game in the world. And the machine won 4-1 in the final match (HY: It was one victory!) for the human side, isn’t it, so the AlphaGo program has the capacity of learning for itself and learning new strategies as the game goes on, so even if you the game by beating, it can learn how you play, learn you know, your moves, the way you think as a player (HY: oh, Nik!) I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m just repeating the facts.H: You’re very words has set, you know, chills upmyspine, Liu Yan, how do you feel about the situation?L: Ok, this is really quite scary, I have to say, because as Nik mentioned, the victory was actually 4-1, but because it was 3 out of 5, best of 5, so as long as you win 3, then you already nailthe final victory. And as it turned out, AlphaGo, 1-3 in the row, so some people was speculating that, you know,AlphaGo actually, through one game in there, just make humans look better, and because he happened to lose the forth one, you know, the one after 3 in the row, I do also believe that it was possible, he kind of just through that away. And now that, you already have one on the score board, and the final one, and I can play my real, according to my real abilityagain. H: You’ve scared me a second time, as the way you referred to Mr. robotAlphaGo, you use “he”, as if it’s a real person!L: I know, but you know, somethings you just can’t deny, as far as AI is concerned. AI defeated human a long time ago, when it came to chess. And apparently, a lot of people are saying Go is likely the last safe place, because Go is so much more complicated, and needs much more human factors, human thinking, but now, the last place, is also… (HY: The laststraw ofthe world chess play. )it also gone, so, it should be very scary. It should be worried.H: Yes, and I think Nik, you make a really good point, that because the robot can learn, it can learn! Oh my gosh! So can we say that we don’t necessarily know that where the robots are going to arrive at, since it’slike a person that can learn things, and there is sort of cognitive activity going on, and is it fair to say as this way.N: I think, not quite. I think (HY: good, good), it can learn, but you know it developesstrategies when it does something wrong and it can learn how not to do that thing wrong again, the next time, but it doesn’t mean it can apply that acknowledge to anything outside the realms of the games necessarily. (HY: thank you, Nik, Thank you very much.) I also think although Go is a big advancement from chess, and it’s much more complicated game for humans as well as machine to learn how to play, other games where there is a kind of hidden aspect, like poker for example, it’s gonna be another kind of milestone, ifthe artificial intelligence learns how to do that, because in Go although it is very complicated, you know all the pieces are out on the table though, both side can see them, so it can learn those kind of strategies where if there was more hidden element, where you have to read another person, the opposite player, maybeisn’t quite there yet.L: That’s really a good point, because if you don’t see everything on the table, then you have to rely on watching someone’s facial expressions for example, and trying to figure out what he or she is exactly thinking, and since this was not involved at this stage, it’s relatively easy for the machine to beat the people, because the machine doesn’t have to do all that. And also, I know we have been painting a very scary picture as for, but if you don’t want to be scared, you can just think this way, cause at the end of the day, AlphaGo is still just a computer program, and who design that program? Humans. So computer programs cannot do something that human… if you don’t put it in the program. Then they certainly cannot do that. So as long as you don’t put it in the program for them to be so awesome, so intelligent, the program won’t be so awesome, so intelligent.H: You make a really good point, and also, if we have a directfirmanswer that we can control the robots in the way they so called think and develop, that they’re always in the control of the hands of humans, then I wouldn’t be so scared, but the reason why people like myself who don’t know much about technology, it is very happy to sleep in mycavewithout any advanced technology at my hand, I’m happy to live like that alright, we’re scared because we don’t know where this is going. Guys, what did the tycoons say?And where is this going?N: Mark Zuckerberg from facebook said he predicted there will be more big advances for artificial intelligence in just next decade. So we not quite finished yet in terms of the development. He said the artificial intelligence will understand senses, such as vision and hearing, and grasp language better than human beings over the next 5 to 10 years. And he highlighted the company Oculus VR, saying that it’sgoing to start producing its product virtual reality products and it could generate $110 billion by 2025, so it is a big business as well as artificial intelligence.L: And of course, Lei Jun, who is the founder of Xiaomi, also seems very optimistic. And he said, he expects AI to be able to beat a human champion at the current stage of development since it's a pretty complicated game, and he also said that now that we’re already see that AlphaGo beat human beings, you can expect that it will attract more capital and talent to the AI sector, so obviously, it will be more developed even in the future.N: One for you Heyang, Jack Mar says, there is no need for humans to fear the machines, he says, the machines will be stronger and smarter than human beings, but they will never be wiser, because wisdom, soul and heart are things that only human beings possess, isn’t that beautiful.H: That is beautiful, but you know, the cynic in me says‘Mr. Jack Madoesn’t sound like you know, that much about AI,’ sorry to say this, but because he is saying, OK, wisdom, fine, soul, fine, heart, fine, these aregreat concepts, but if the robot, it’s so clever, and if you can’t control it, this is all presumptions alright, then with the means nothing, if it can surpass you in other ways, and can terminateyou, that is notgonna happen everybody, I’m not going tosend scares or spread that.L: But I do think your worry is kind of valued, I don’t know if you guys have seen the film “her” from a couple of years ago. Scarlett Johansson (HY: oh, she is so hot. Oh, excuse me, I’m going to the wrong direction.) with her computer program, but a guy, played by Joaquin Phoenix, is totally to be able to be attracted just to a computer program, because she has possessed all those qualities, she has heart, she has soul, and she has intelligence, wisdom, so it is possible. And also last year, there was a film called “Ex Machina”, I don’t know if you have seen that, that one is even scarier, because in that one, robots actually were so clever and so manipulative, they eventually killed humans.H: And like so many other Hollywood films, they played with insecurity and anxiety in this area, because we don’t know what’s gonna to happen in the future, and if we are being colonized by robots, that kind of thing. Here on wechat, our listener Lin Yingdong, says I want a robot companion, I mean, girl, why? I’dbe scared, and like Japanese people are known for this, they’ve got a whole bunch of…like robot pet dogs, robot companions, and how could like human emotion be placed in that regard, I mean, I don’t know what is going on here.N: Now, it is a definitely area that you can easily see why people are scared or hate. I think, the more we have this conversation, the more I’m falling into that campas well I think. It is interesting that someone said that they would like a robot companion, I mean, what kind of companionship, someone sit in your house, and like to talk to, can it to talk back?L: This might be off the topic, but you know what this reminds me, it totally reminds me of the “大白”character from the Big Hero 6, (HY: the Baymax) yeah, the Baymax from the Big Hero 6, maybe she was thinking about the robot companion like that. That would be adorable, I would want one like that as well.H: Alright, I’m happy to be your friend, Liu Yan, (Nik: a human being.) Yeah, your blood and fresh, a real person.L: That would be the best, however, a robot could be very cuddly, which not necessarily, you know, human beings can do.H: What? Cuddlier than human beings? LY, What’s going on?L: I’m thinking about Baymax in particular.H: Baymax is cute. But yes, I think the ultimateworry for people is whether this technology can be controlled by people, and I mean, scientists out there that must be the bottom line that I think is really needed here. And just quickilybefore we go on to the next topic guys, a lot of people are saying that so many jobs are just gonna be takenover by robots, and I think a couple of months ago on this show, we talked about that even some of the news stories but news stories, alright, only reporting news without much of human touch, those kind of stories have been written by robot journalists. (Nik: we’re still safe now.) Are we? Are we? So what are the jobs that you think are gonna disappear the landscape from the job market for humans, and how can we deal the situation.L: I think if a job requires a lot of data or to be processed or a great deal of routine to be repeated, then this job probably will be tookoverby robots, because it’s relatively easy. However, if this is a job requires a lot of creative input, for example, if you are an artist, I don’t think that would be easily replaceable by any robots any time soon. So it’s really depends on the quality or the specific requirement of the job.N: Anything, any kind of job where you perform repetitive kind of continuousaction throughout the day doesn’t change that much, I think something robots probably do better in a lot of cases, cause they’re soquick and efficient and also you don’t have to pay them.H: So, yeah, you don’t need to pay for them, but you need to charge the battery probably, keep them connect to the electronic sockets and those kind of things. And yeah, our wechat listener Jessy has something pretty smart to say regarding this topic. She says about the list of jobs that will easily be replaced in the future by the robots has gone viral on wechat right now, and like accountants, security guards, cleaning jobs, and delivering jobs, these things might have no place for humans in the future, but what distinguishes us from robots is that we, as human beings are able to feel stuff, we are not emotionless. So she holds this slightly positive view that is, you know, there is still place for humans as long as humans are in the control position, but it’s going to be hard to defend that position if the technology is that advanced, and I think this is one of those high grounds we have to guard as humans...
