After over a year since theatres shut down across the UK and around the world, the Royal Court Theatre has been leading a charge in the grand reopening of London theatres. One of it's most exciting productions is a new play by Obie and Olivier Award recipient Caryl Churchill. John Heffernan is one of the stars of her new play What If If Only'and very kindly sat down with us to discuss the eagerly anticipated new work by Churchill and what the rehearsal process has been like amidst ongoing restrictions after some time away from the stage. Heffernan most recently starred in acclaimed BBC drama The Pursuit of Love and has also played key roles in Brexit: The Uncivil War, The Crown and films: Official Secrets and Misbehaviour. A certainly increasingly familiar face for his work on screen and on stage, critics and audiences alike have praised John Heffernan's detailed acting and in this interview, we also see a hardworking and enthusiastically charming individual.John Heffernan previously starred in Caryl Churchill's Love and Information at the Royal Court Theatre alongside fellow co-star of What If If Only  actress Linda Bassett. It seems like a grand reunion with Caryl Churchill also present in the rehearsal room as they guided under the careful direction of Love and Information director James Macdonald. Heffernan reminisces about his early visits to the Royal Court as a keen-eyed student and how he first fell in love with Churchill's work in this candid interview. We get to find out what it's been like working with some of his heroes as well as his hopes for the theatre industry as we move out of the COVID-19 pandemic. It's a truly fascinating interview and we wish the company well as they open on Friday 1st October.Tickets on sale NOW: https://royalcourttheatre.com/whats-on/whatififonly/

We’ve all had quite enough reality for one year. In an IfG Christmas special, we ask what fictional and fantasy worlds can teach us about governing. What does the collapse of the Republic in Star Wars tell us about Brexit? Does the Harry Potter universe need drastic democratic reform? In the real world, who nails life in government better: Borgen or The West Wing? And where’s the Public Inquiry into the murder epidemic in Midsomer? James Graham – our greatest political playwright and the pen behind This House, Quiz and Brexit: The Uncivil War – is our guest for this special holiday edition. “Dramas like The West Wing let you take an institution like the Presidency and stress-test it in a fictional environment… You get to enjoy the absurdities in a safe place.” – James Graham“What does Obi-Wan Kenobi tell Anakin? ‘Only the Sith deal in extremes’. Star Wars is a love letter to social democracy and George Lucas is the ultimate centrist dad.” – James Graham“Midsomer badly needs a place-based approach to crime prevention.” – Alice Lilly“The Death Star? Hello and welcome to this weeks episode of Sorry! You're In My Seat - a weekly podcast which unites three best friends on a quest to find the greatest movies of all time.  As we enter week 11 of the UK's Corona virus lock-down, we can't help but notice how the lack of hairdressers is affecting some people. For some, this has been a chance to grow a beard, to go full Gandalf and grow a fierce face fleece. Its been a way to channel one's inner hipster and become a member of ZZ Top.  For others, quite the opposite. The temptation to save money on shampoo and to embrace a chrome dome has meant it's peak season for cue ball and uncle Fester jokes.  This week our heroes go head-to-head (or Beard-to-head) in an Olympic showdown picking their top movie beardies and top Hollywood baldies. Which movie characters would you pick for your all star line up? As always, there is also plenty of film talk, including movie reviews of Yesterday, Fisherman's Friends and Brexit: The Uncivil War.   So what are you waiting for? this episode and all our shows are free to download - just remember to leave us a review :)

Gavin Grey: UK Minister quits government over Boris Johnson aide's lockdown breach

Dominic Cummings helped Boris Johnson win power by pitting the people against the elite. Johnson’s Conservative administration has branded itself “the People’s Government.”The prime minister’s populist appeal has been hammered by news that, as the coronavirus outbreak raged, chief adviser Cummings drove 250 miles (400 kilometers) to his parents’ house while he was falling ill with suspected COVID-19 — allegedly flouting lockdown rules that the government had imposed on the rest of the country.Cummings says he traveled to the family farm in northeast England so that his nieces could care for his 4-year-old son if he and his wife both became sick. But that explanation cut little ice with many Britons, who say they have endured isolation, anxiety and sometimes loss in order to follow government advice to “Stay Home ... Save Lives.”On Tuesday, junior Scotland minister Douglas Ross quit Johnson’s Conservative government, saying “the vast majority of people” didn't agree with Cummings’ action.“I have constituents who didn’t get to say goodbye to loved ones; families who could not mourn together; people who didn’t visit sick relatives because they followed the guidance of the government,” Ross wrote in a resignation letter. “I cannot in good faith tell them they were all wrong and one senior adviser to the government was right.”Johnson, however, appears determined to hang onto an aide who has been dubbed “Boris’ brain,” even if it fractures his government and erodes Britain’s response to the pandemic.Arguably, Johnson owes his job to Cummings, a self-styled disrupter who disdains the political establishment and slouches through the halls of government in sweatpants and T-shirts.In 2016, Cummings honed populist messages that helped the “leave” campaign, co-led by Johnson, win Britain's EU membership referendum. He is credited with coming up with the campaign’s powerfully simple slogan: “Take back control.” He also hired a firm linked to Cambridge Analytica, which detractors say unleashed the poison of data-harvesting and social-media manipulation into the British political bloodstream.A TV drama about the referendum, “Brexit: The Uncivil War,” made Cummings the central character, played by “Sherlock” star Benedict Cumberbatch. When Johnson became prime minister in July 2019 after interminable battles over Brexit defeated his predecessor Theresa May, he hired Cummings as his right-hand man. In December, Johnson won a commanding majority in Parliament with a ruthlessly focused election campaign and another simple slogan: “Get Brexit done.”Johnson, who spent three nights in intensive care with COVID-19 last month, has backed his adviser, saying Cummings “followed the instincts of every father and every parent.”Cummings denies breaking regulations, imposed on March 23, that said people shouldn't leave home except for trips to get essential supplies, exercise and emergencies. At a long, unrepentant news conference on Monday, Cummings argued that his need to ensure care for his son was an “exceptional situation.”“I don’t think there is one rule for me and one rule for other people,” Cummings insisted. But that’s exactly how it looks to many.Senior police officers said Cummings’ interpretation of the rules made it harder to enforce the lockdown,Thousands of people in Britain have been fined for breaching stay-at-home rules. Health Secretary Matt Hancock was asked at a news conference whether the government would review the penalties for people who could provide a childcare excuse. Hancock didn't commit, but said he would “take away that question.”Scientists said Cummings' example could harm messaging about the importance of social distancing.“It threatens to undermine that sense of community if a figure as prominent as Dominic Cummings and if the prime minister himself starts undermining that ‘we’ message and starts talking about ‘I,’” said Stephen Reicher, a behavioral psychologist who helps advise the government.Cum...

This edition of Front Row is devoted to one of the most exciting playwrights to emerge this century. James Graham is only 37 but has already become a foremost chronicler of modern Britain on stage and screen. He is known for taking on the big issues of the day – Brexit, privacy online, parliamentary democracy, fake news - whilst enabling his audience to see things from the points of view of those involved. In This House the whip's office, more than the chamber of the House of Commons, is where power plays. His controversial television play Brexit: The Uncivil War, set in the offices of the Vote Leave campaign, brought our attention to the critical role played by Dominic Cummings, now the Prime Minister’s chief adviser. At Easter ITV will broadcast his adaptation of his play – Quiz – about the coughing controversy and the major accused of cheating on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. It is about truth, fact and power - the power of television. Graham's work in the theatre is often interactive: in Privacy audience members were asked to keep their phones on and information gathered from them became part of the drama. The final performance of The Vote, set in a polling station, was live-streamed from one as it closed on the night of the general election of 2015. In Quiz the audience became the trial jury. Graham talks about the importance of the live, communal aspect of theatre, and, too, how television can be an arena where millions can consider the complex challenges of our times. In a wide ranging, richly illustrated interview James Graham tells Kirsty Lang about the crucial role of drama in explaining power and politics, in learning about how our society works, and the importance of being even-handed. Theatre, TV and film create simulations of environments to transport the audience somewhere else. Similarly here at Argenta Wellness and those who work using biophilic design, we create harmony by mimicking nature to bring about a simulated environment of an outside space to bring peace and calm to workplaces, healthcare and so on. In this podcast we speak with actor Paul Ryan (Brexit: The Uncivil War and Christine Keeler) who enjoyed a 3-year run in London's theatre-land in Mamma Mia. Paul describes how with backdrops and actors' states of mind, they created and conveyed the outdoors, how the summer and heat of a Greek island were conjured in the staging of Mamma Mia. Paul is also an executive coach, and he goes on to describe how he, in his professional practice also creates environments where people can change their mindsets and shift into a positive state of mind. Paul helps people improve their presentation skills and gives teams the mechanisms to cope with the anxiety of change. In this podcast we pick up insights into how Paul trains you to gain mastery over anxiety through posture and silence, allowing your auxiliary thinking to come forward to help find your own answers. As with everything a positive environment is key.

Ali Smith, Jay Bernard and James Graham join Matthew Sweet at the British Library in a discussion organised with the Royal Society of Literature. Making art from real events is as old to writing as the pen – older. But what happens when the events you are writing about are recent, or happening as you write? What are the writer’s duties to fact? How can writing bear witness to contemporary moments of social upheaval or human disasters? In writing the ‘now’, where does non-fiction stop and fictive creation begin? In this discussion, three writers, across forms, consider how to write real events. Ali Smith has published three novels in a four-novel seasonal cycle, Autumn, Winter and Spring, exploring time, society and art in the context of Brexit Britain. Jay Bernard’s collection, Surge, explores the significance of events ranging from the New Cross Fire in 1981 to the 2017 Grenfell disaster. James Graham’s play The Vote took place in the last 90 minutes before polls closed in the 2015 General Election, and was broadcast live on Channel 4 on election night. His 2019 drama for Channel 4, Brexit: The Uncivil War, explored the very recent history of the Brexit referendum. Producer: Zahid Warley.

It's an absurdity that should never have been allowed; a massive crime perpetrated by an unaccountable elite, sold with a pack of lies and probably funded by the Russians; a catastrophic charade and an insult to every right-thinking person in this great country. Plus, Benedict Cumberbatch's accent is a bit wonky! I am of course referring to Channel 4's film Brexit: The Uncivil War, and not the seismic political event itself, which is, we can all agree, great. For a longer epic rant on what a pointless self-inflicted wound and calamitous act of sheer stupidity James Graham's drama is, listen to this episode's review! We also tackle the drug addiction drama Beautiful Boy, whose schmaltzy title gives only the mildest hint of the dangerous levels of schmaltz the film contains, and the Palme d'Or winning Korean drama Shoplifters, a much better movie that will make you laugh, cry, and hungry. Plus! We check in on Disney scraping their big animation barrel to get some live-action, possibly CGI-enhanced massive wads of cash, and we take a look at efforts to defibrillate a flatlining Ghostbusters franchise by giving it a big nostalgic reboot jolt. It’s time-sensitive again so we’re releasing this one, recorded at 2pm on Wednesday, a little early. In our first podcast of 2019 we’re right back into the Brexit war of attrition with the aid of special guest PETER KELLNER, doyen of pollsters, ex-president of YouGov and expert on exactly the sort of constitutional mess we find ourselves in this week.As luck would have it we recorded at the exact moment the Grieve Amendment – the one that mandates the Government to come up with a Plan B if and when the May Deal is defeated – went to the vote. Listen as the panel try to formulate a coherent response to the result on the fly…PLUS: Was Channel 4’s ‘Brexit: The Uncivil War’ a worthy chronicle of Leave’s data heist during the Referendum and does Benedict Cumberbatch convince as Dominic ‘Obi-Wan Brexit’ Cummings? Will the Government get away with launching its Pay To Stay “settlement scheme” for UK-resident EU citizens over Christmas, when it thought nobody was watching? And could we run a ferry company or a lorry park better than the Government? This week’s podcast is produced and presented by Andrew Harrison with Alex Andreou, Ros Taylor and Ian Dunt (who had to rush off before the photo). Audio production is by Alex Rees. Brexit: The Uncivil War stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Rory Kinnear as the leaders of the Leave and Remain campaigns. Written by James Graham, the one-off Channel 4 drama follows the campaigns as they compete for public attention and votes. TV critic David Butcher reviews. The Catcher in the Rye, narrated by 16-year-old Holden Caulfield, is perhaps the classic coming-of-age text of the 20th Century. Why did the book have such an impact and what are the merits of JD Salinger's other work? Literary critic Erica Wagner and American cultural commentator Michael Carlson discuss the writing of this hugely talented and complicated man, to mark Salinger's centenary. Tracy-Ann Oberman, perhaps best known as Chrissie Watts in EastEnders, discusses her new roles in the Harold Pinter plays Party Time and Celebration. They are being performed as part of a six month season at the Pinter Theatre in London where they are bringing together all of his one-act productions.Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Ben Mitchell
