From early canal towns to rapidly expanding industrial cities, in this episode, we are joined by fellow Buffalonian John Fagant, trustee of the Buffalo Presidential Center to explore how Catholic immigrants and clergy shaped American communities during a time of major growth. Using the story of frontier-era Buffalo as a case study, we follow how the Erie Canal, massive migration from Ireland and Germany, parish building, and rising nativism transformed both urban life and the Catholic Church. The episode also looks at church–state conflicts, public schooling debates, social tensions, and the national political landscape leading up to the Civil War. This is a great look at how movement, growth, and faith changed the landscape of the United States.Listen wherever you get your podcasts. #HistoryPodcast #CatholicHistory #EarlyAmerica #ImmigrationHistory #UrbanHistory #USHistory #PapacyPodcastwww.buffalopresidentialcenter.orgSupport the show:Buy me a coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/historyofthepapacyPatreon: http://patreon.com/historyofthepapacyBuy me a book: http://bit.ly/40ckJ8EHave questions, comments or feedback? Mark joins Sal to preview the matchup with UB and their season so far.
This Sunday, December 7, at Highmark Stadium in chilly Orchard Park, NY, the Buffalo Bills (8-4) host the Cincinnati Bengals (4-8) in a Week 14 NFL showdown with massive playoff stakes. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. ET on FOX, flexed from a later slot amid Cincinnati's sudden spark. The Bills, clinging to AFC East control amid a wild-card scrum, must win to stay ahead of surging rivals like the Jets and Dolphins. For the Bengals, buried in the AFC North but two games back of Baltimore, this is elimination Sunday—Joe Burrow's return has ignited faint hopes of a late miracle run. Buffalo enters as a 6-point favorite (moneyline -275; over/under 52.5), per BetMGM, with a 70% win probability from models like Dimers. Their offense hums, led by MVP frontrunner Josh Allen (30 total TDs, second in NFL). Allen's dual-threat prowess—19 passing, 11 rushing scores—pairs with the league's top ground game (155.7 yards/game). James Cook, fresh off back-to-back 100-yard outbursts, feasts against Cincy's porous run D (153.3 yards allowed, second-worst). Buffalo's defense, No. 1 in pass yards conceded (163.2/game), has rebounded lately, forcing turnovers and stifling Pittsburgh 26-7 last week. Linebacker Shaq Thompson anchors the front seven, eyeing Bengals RB Chase Brown and TEs (65 catches, 527 yards, 6 TDs). Cincinnati counters with Burrow's precision (261 yards, 2 TDs in his Week 13 return from a foot injury) and Ja'Marr Chase's wizardry (chasing 1,000 yards for a fifth straight season). Chase torched Baltimore for 110 yards, but Buffalo's secondary—featuring Rasul Douglas—ranks eighth in yards per attempt allowed (6.5). The Bengals' D, 32nd in points (31.2/game) and total yards (410/game), leans on DE Joseph Ossai (5 sacks) amid Trey Hendrickson's absence. Tee Higgins remains in concussion protocol, thinning the arsenal. Experts lean Bills in a shootout: USA TODAY predicts 28-24 Buffalo, NBC sees a 27-23 squeaker. Yet Burrow's perfect December road record (5-0) tempts upset whispers. Expect Allen to exploit gaps early, Cook to grind clock, and Burrow to rally late—but home-field and Buffalo's December dominance (23-4 since 2020) tilt the scales. Fireworks await in this AFC thriller. Music from #InAudio: https://inaudio.org/ Track Name Holy (Trap). The Battle of the Little Bighorn - also known as the Battle of the Greasy Grass - was one of the most dramatic and important clashes in American history. In June 1876, on the rolling plains of Montana, Colonel George Armstrong Custer and the 7th Cavalry charged into a vast encampment of Lakota and other tribes — and were utterly destroyed by the superior native forces who fought to defend their sacred lands from the encroaching United States. In this episode, Dan is joined by former National Parks historian Paul Hedren to explore how this battle came to define the struggle between the U.S. government and the Plains tribes, what led to Custer's fatal mistake, and how the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho achieved a stunning, if fleeting, victory.Paul's new book is called 'Sitting Bull's War: The Battle of the Little Bighorn and the Fight for Buffalo and Freedom'.The terminology to use when exploring and discussing Indigenous and native peoples, history, and culture is sensitive and complex. Munaf Manji, Dave Essler and Mackenzie Rivers talk NFL contest betting for Week 14. Munaf Manji opens the NFL Week 14 Contest Podcast with Mackenzie Rivers and Uncle Dave Essler, noting the chaos of Thanksgiving week and that only 45 entries remain in Circa Survivor after a massive 851-entry wipeout. They break down how all three Thanksgiving favorites lost, how Chicago upset Philadelphia on Black Friday, and how the Rams' loss to Carolina knocked out four more on Sunday. Mackenzie and Dan were eliminated in Survivor, and Mack jokingly laments missing Fezzik's hindsight advice to take the Bears as a big dog. They review key picks for Week 14. Uncle Dave takes the Jaguars over the Colts, arguing Indy has been propped up by an easy schedule while Jacksonville, despite inconsistencies, is healthier and stronger at home. Munaf adds that Daniel Jones' injury limits the Colts' offense and expects Jacksonville to load the box against Jonathan Taylor. Mack sees the matchup as close but leans Jags due to historical Colts struggles in Jacksonville. Mack's best bet is the Bills over the Bengals, noting the line is similar to their January 2023 playoff meeting despite Cincinnati being far weaker now and Buffalo's elite rushing matchup against a poor Bengals rush defense. Munaf expects Buffalo to score 30+ and exploit Cincinnati's offensive-line issues even with Joe Burrow healthy. Dave agrees the Bengals' defense is too weak to justify market respect. Munaf's pick is the Ravens over the Steelers, citing Baltimore's bounce-back spot, Derrick Henry's matchup edge, Pittsburgh's struggling offense, and poor wide-receiver chemistry with Aaron Rodgers. Dave supports it, noting Pittsburgh's run-defense collapse vs Buffalo and internal frustration around Rodgers calling out teammates. Mack acknowledges Tomlin-as-dog trends but still leans Ravens due to matchup disadvantages. They discuss whether Tomlin's 19-season winning-record streak will finally end, reviewing a brutal remaining Steelers schedule (Ravens, Dolphins, Lions, Browns, Ravens again) and concluding an 8-9 finish is likely. In Survivor talk, Uncle Dave would use the Eagles over the Chargers despite Philly's recent losses, arguing the Chargers' résumé is weak and Harbaugh may not be the NFL fit people expect. Mack's mapped-out Survivor plan had Tampa Bay beating the Saints this week and still believes the Bucs are the right side with New Orleans showing no incentive to win. Munaf also likes the Bucs and adds the Rams as strong options vs a fading Cardinals team giving up 27+ points in four straight games. They close the episode with gratitude, reflecting on the season, encouraging listener feedback for future shows, and reminding everyone to follow their Survivor coverage and other Pregame podcasts. Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives. I'm your host, Jeff Miers. Today, my guest is Evan Laedke, a musician with an impressively broad skill-set, one that has made him a first-call keyboardist for a wide variety of WNY bands, one-off gigs and sessions. Currently playing keys for Tsavo Highway, the Little Mountain Band, and others, Evan somehow found time in his busy schedule to take on the role of Music Director at Third Space, a 4,000 sq. foot, 2-story cafe, art gallery and entertainment space. Evan and his partner, owner Chelsea Mae, opened their ‘dream come true' in the historic Sidway Building at 777 Main St. in Buffalo, last December. In the time since, he's poured his considerable passion for our city's music scene into making Third Space into a home-away-from home for regional artists, bands, poets and comedians. During our chat, Evan told me about his life in music, his early inspirations, and his hopes for Third Space going forward. We just lowered the prices on all of our packages, and promo code 'GURU' gets you an extra 15% off to make a Fantasy Points Premium sub only $134 for the rest of the year. https://www.fantasypoints.com/plans#/ Week 14 features one of the most critical fantasy matchups of the season. With four teams on bye, Matchup Points focuses on the matchups that truly matter. Detroit and Dallas lead the week with the highest totals, keeping Jared Goff as a viable QB1 even if Amon-Ra St. Brown is out. Conversely, Seattle and Atlanta show a decline due to Ken Walker's decreasing role and Drake London's injury, making both offenses less appealing outside of DK Metcalf. Cincinnati and Buffalo present highly playable environments, with James Cook and Dalton Kincaid poised to exploit the Bengals' defensive weaknesses, while Tee Higgins' health will determine if it turns into a shootout. The mid-slate games are more volatile, especially Tennessee vs. Cleveland, where inconsistent quarterback play and depth issues limit fantasy value. Jacksonville and Indianapolis are more promising, with Trevor Lawrence facing a soft zone defense and Travis Etienne expected to rebound. Late-slate matches are unpredictable; Austin Ekeler and Gerald Everett face tough coverage from Philadelphia, while Joe Burrow's return boosts all Bengals and suggests a YAC-focused approach for Buffalo, benefiting Khalil Shakir. The main takeaway: Week 14 is about analyzing matchups, avoiding fragile roles, and making decisive, playoff-oriented lineup decisions. Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Gerry Dulac and Ray Fittipaldo have a practice report from the team's facility ahead of its NFL Week 14 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens. What should we make of the Steelers coordinators' comments on Thursday? Does Arthur Smith have the correct level of urgency? Have we reached the point of the season when he should focus on getting his best players on the field — i.e., Pat Freiermuth, Jaylen Warren, DK Metcalf, etc. — rather than focusing on situational football? What role will Adam Thielen play, and what can they even get out of the 35-year-old wide receiver? Is Teryl Austin's run defense ready? Or should we expect another performance like the one we say Sunday vs. Buffalo or in last season's wild card game against the Ravens? Will they be able to stop Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry? How can defensive backs like Joey Porter Jr. help the run defense? And is Yahya Black up to the challenge? Our duo answers those questions and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. After being released by the Steelers former Eagle CB Darius Slay is NOT reporting to the Bills who claimed him on waivers. Is this Slay forcing his way back to Philly?
Buffalo dominated with disciplined tackling, a clear defensive identity, and an offensive plan built on controlling the line of scrimmage. From Christian Benford shadowing DK Metcalf, to Shaq Thompson's calming impact, to a run game that racked up 249 yards even when the defense knew what was coming… this was a sound gameplan.▶️ Hit subscribe for weekly X's & O's film sessions!

The Cincinnati Bengals' defense, once dubbed the worst in NFL history for surrendering over 400 yards per game and 32.7 points on average through 11 weeks, has undergone a dramatic transformation in the last three outings. Post-bye week, this young unit—plagued by rookie errors, poor tackling, and a lack of takeaways—has flipped the script, providing a lifeline to a 4-8 team clinging to faint playoff hopes. The turnaround ignited in Week 12 against the New England Patriots, where Cincinnati limited a surging offense to 26 points, their second-lowest yield of the season. Defensive coordinator Al Golden highlighted improved tackling and run defense, crediting middle linebacker Barrett Carter's "line of scrimmage command." Though the Bengals fell 26-20, it marked a stark contrast to prior debacles, like the 80 combined points leaked to the Bears and Jets pre-bye. Thanksgiving's 32-14 rout of the Baltimore Ravens on November 27 epitomized the surge. Facing the AFC's hottest team, the defense forced five turnovers—including three from Lamar Jackson—while sacking him thrice and holding Derrick Henry to 60 rushing yards. They allowed just 346 total yards, converted only 3-of-10 third downs, and notched their first sub-26-point game since Week 1. Rookies Demetrius Knight Jr. and Carter shone: Knight's red-zone interception and Carter's leadership in calls anchored the front seven. As Golden noted, the group is "populating the ball" more aggressively, blending sophisticated blitzes with veteran poise. Head coach Zac Taylor praised the "complete-game" effort, the first of 2025, while quarterback Joe Burrow, returning from injury, credited the "building" momentum. Even safety Geno Stone admitted fewer missed tackles, signaling growing confidence. With edge rusher Trey Hendrickson nearing return, this three-week sample—yielding 14 points per game against Baltimore and better third-down stops—hints at sustainability. For a squad eyeing a Buffalo rematch, it's not just improvement; it's redemption. The Bengals' kids have grown up, turning a liability into a weapon just in time. RJ Bell, Steve Fezzik and Mackenzie Rivers talk NFL betting for Week 14. RJ Bell, Steve Fezzik, and Mackenzie Rivers break down NFL Week 14 betting, starting with RJ promoting a $50 seven-day all-access code WEEK50. Fezz's best bet is Colts to score first vs Jacksonville because of coin-toss tendencies and expected offensive advantage in a high-total game, with discussion about teams choosing to receive, scripting, first-drive props, and coin-flip-based derivative betting. RJ and Fezz debate optimal strategy, adjustments, and first-quarter dynamics. RJ describes analyzing first-drive receiver usage, highlighting Puka Nacua and Colts TE Alie-Cox/Woods/Warren (context mixed) as early-drive targets. They discuss deferring vs receiving, coaching tendencies, and how underdogs may benefit from taking the ball. They move into Fezz's prop focus shift and success. RJ and Fezz make a season-long sides/totals bet with RJ picking 30 games vs no-vig lines. Mackenzie reports RJ's recent streak (8–1 best bets, 10–2 likes). Conversation shifts to MVP odds, Stafford vs Drake Maye, injury risk, schedule strength, market pricing, and how voters behave. They also discuss Burrow's return, Bengals vs Bills line comparisons to past matchups, Cincinnati's weak defense, Buffalo's variance, McDermott's seat, and playoff stakes. Mackenzie's best bet is Bills –5.5 vs Bengals based on summer lines, defensive decline, and Buffalo urgency. RJ gives his best bet: Seahawks–Falcons under, citing Sam Darnold regression, Seattle protecting him, blitz issues vs Atlanta, scripted drives, Cousins limitations, motivation angles, and expectation of a 1995-style game. Fezz adds Chicago TE Loveland over yards due to increased targets and misleading prior stats. NBA segment: Thunder win projection, depth, injury savings, draft capital, and possible value on OKC to break the GS record; Knicks value to win the Atlantic. RJ provides more NFL picks: Packers team-total over, Bears team-total over based on Chicago offense improvement and defensive weakness; under in Chiefs–Texans due to Houston defensive surge, KC O-line issues, weather, and conservative game scripts; under first quarter Saints–Bucs because both offenses start slow and Tampa injuries limit explosiveness. They cover fire-and-ice weather mismatches, Fezz backing KC –3 vs Houston due to cold exposure issues, plus more rationale for the under. They discuss Pittsburgh–Baltimore history, third-quarter angle favoring the Ravens, Lamar's struggles outside the numbers, and prop opportunities for TEs/RBs. They note Indy's long losing streak at Jacksonville, Denver and Rams teaser options, Cleveland bad-weather unders, QB uncertainty for Washington and Chargers, and late-season bye effects. The show ends with general betting philosophy talk, variance, props, market holds, and closing banter. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Panel guests this week: Cory Morgan (columnist, Western Standard) | Chris Scott (activist, Alberta Prosperity Project) Today, we're looking at debate surrounding potential First Nations' vetoes of any new pipeline project following Alberta and Ottawa's signing of a memorandum of understanding that opens the door to new developments. Plus, alongside the agreement comes an industrial carbon tax hike, something Prime Minister Mark Carney has been boasting about. And finally, Premier Danielle Smith is backing Albertans' right to self-defence, with her governing United Conservative Party looking to roll out new legislation to protect those who defend their property from intruders. Special Guest: Lise Merle.
The Lord's warning to the priests becomes severe as He condemns them for despising His name and offering defiled sacrifices. Their unfaithfulness has corrupted the covenant of Levi. Malachi then addresses the people's faithlessness and their casual approach to divorce. God is "wearied" by their sin, and He promises to send His messenger to purify His people with a refiner's fire. The Rev. Roger Mullet, pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Buffalo, WY, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Malachi 2:1-3:5. To learn more about Prince of Peace, visit princeofpeacebuffalo.org. This Advent series begins by covering the last Old Testament prophet, Malachi, and then spends twelve episodes alternating between Old Testament prophecy and New Testament fulfillment, tracing God's promises from Isaiah to the birth of Christ. The series explores Emmanuel's promise, the Davidic King, John the Baptist as forerunner, and reaches its climax with the Nativity. The final episodes examine the Suffering Servant, the shadow of the cross in Christ's infancy, Isaiah's Messianic mission statement, and John's declaration that "the Word became flesh." Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. Week 13 was absolute chaos — upsets, blowouts, meltdowns, and a few “are we sure that team is real?” moments across the NFL. Hunter “SlapDawg” Amoruso and Matthew “Scotty” Holtmeyer break down every major storyline, every primetime moment, and every game that shook up the playoff picture. In this episode, we cover:
In the frosty confines of Highmark Stadium, the Cincinnati Bengals square off against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, December 7, 2025, in a pivotal AFC clash that pits two of the league's premier quarterbacks against each other: Joe Burrow and Josh Allen. As Week 14 unfolds, both teams jockey for playoff positioning, with the Bills clinging to a wild-card spot and the Bengals desperate to climb the standings after a rollercoaster start to the season. Joe Burrow, the Bengals' unflappable gunslinger, enters this matchup on a high note. Fresh off a triumphant return from a nagging wrist tweak earlier this year, Burrow has been surgical, posting 19.24 fantasy points in his last outing and ranking as the QB4 overall. His 2025 stats scream efficiency: over 4,000 passing yards, 30-plus touchdowns, and a completion percentage north of 68%. Armed with Ja'Marr Chase's explosive routes and Tee Higgins' red-zone prowess, Burrow thrives in shootouts. But Buffalo's secondary, led by Christian Benford and a resurgent Taron Johnson, will test him—expect Burrow to lean on quick slants and play-action to counter the Bills' blitz-heavy scheme under Sean McDermott. On the flip side, Josh Allen embodies chaos in the best way possible. The MVP frontrunner boasts a league-leading five double-digit rushing touchdowns, blending arm talent with bulldozer mobility. Averaging 25.8 points per game in fantasy terms, Allen's dual-threat nightmare—coupled with James Cook's shifty runs and Khalil Shakir's emergence—makes Buffalo's offense a juggernaut. Yet, Cincinnati's front seven, anchored by Trey Hendrickson and a healthy Sam Hubbard, poses a real threat to Allen's pocket presence. If the Bills' O-line holds, Allen could exploit the Bengals' middling pass defense for chunk plays. Head-to-head history favors Burrow slightly, with a 2-1 edge in regular-season tilts, but Allen's home-field advantage and Buffalo's 6-1 December record tilt the scales. This isn't just a quarterback duel; it's a symphony of stars—Burrow's precision versus Allen's power—where the winner could vault their squad toward January glory. Prediction: Bills edge it 31-27, but don't bet against Burrow's magic. Football at its finest. Music from #InAudio: https://inaudio.org/ Track Name Holy (Trap).
