Get married, buy a house, raise a family. For many of us, that's the expected life trajectory. Are we entitled to meet that expectation? If many follow the typical trajectory, including having two or more children, then we drive human civilization right off a cliff. On an overpopulated planet, does society have an obligation to make parenthood possible, practical, convenient, and/or affordable to all? Public policy on the table in the U.S. today is designed to make it easier for couples to have children. Ethicist Philip Cafaro joins us to discuss the motivations behind these policies and the moral questions about whether people are “entitled” to have children on an overpopulated planet. In this episode, we hear some unenlightened statements about U.S. population from U.S. Senator Mitt Romney, including inviting listeners to conclude U.S. population is declining (it is not), and a healthy dose of depopulation panic. Cafaro is professor of philosophy at Colorado State University and an affiliated faculty member of CSU's School of Global Environmental Sustainability. He's also written a couple of books about human overpopulation, and he is co-founder of The Overpopulation Project. Eat Your Heartland Out is a series dedicated to the rich, yet often overlooked, culinary depth of the American Midwest. We will debut the show tomorrow night, and here to tell us all about it is the host of the show, Capri Cafaro. ~~~ More shoppers are buying Impossible Burgers, Beyond Meat and other meat alternatives made from plants. Now, smaller businesses are jumping on the trend, too. But as Harvest Public Media's Seth Bodine reports, while the industry is gaining traction, public perception is one of the biggest obstacles to more growth. ~~~ In an excerpt of the Conversations on Healthcare podcast, we hear from Dr. Rachel Levine, assistant secretary for health at the US Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Levine is the first transgender presidential appointee approved by the Senate. Among the topics are transgender legislation, telehealth for rural areas, and the latest news on COVID vaccinations.

In this episode of Forever a Golden Bear, Erin Cafaro, Cal's most decorated oarswoman in history, and now a clinical psychology doctoral student at the prestigious Wright Institute shares with us her remarkable journey from joining Cal's crew without any rowing experience, to becoming a two-time olympic gold medalist, to her introspective transition into her post-sports career. In an unvarnished narrative that examines her mindset at the time, Erin discusses the unsettling experience of standing on the Olympic podium (twice) without feeling existential satisfaction from medaling, the tradeoffs that come from a hyper-focused mindset, and the importance of mindfulness and balance in her evolving approach to high performance and happiness.Erin can be reached at ejcafaro@gmail.com, and can be followed on LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
Wendi and Dfernando's thirty-third episode and their guest is former NY Politico, writer, producer, rock singer and U.S. Editor of SLiNK Magazine: Renee Cafaro. Renee Cafaro is what can easily be called a triple threat: Ivy league educated, politically active and a strong voice for size-inclusive fashion — the New York-based writer and U.S. Editor for SLiNK magazine is using her intellect and political prowess to advance the conversation around plus-size fashion as well as be an advocate for issues including affordable housing to funding the NEA that provides veterans with cultural and arts therapy. Her passion for public service may only be rivaled by her love of style. She refers to leopard print as a “neutral” and can rock a statement making red suit as easily as most wear sweats. While her stature is small, Cafaro is nothing short of a force, navigating the politics of Washington DC as well as local issues in New York (she was appointed to the Manhattan Community Board) with grace and of course, style.Among her other countless projects she has brewing, Cafaro is also the front-woman of the rock band Run for Cover. And on Episode 33, Wendi and Dfernando talk about Thanksgiving and regional Christimas songs. And on the RIPE & ROTTEN REPORT you have the air fryer, viral WASP Mom social media videos, and PlutoTV. Bob Cafaro is a professional cellist, author, and ass-kicker of multiple sclerosis. In his latest newsletter, he revealed two MS-busting tactics that he hadn't written about in his book, When the Music Stopped: My Battle and Victory Against MS. Partly as an excuse to have another conversation with Bob (he's such a kind and passionate and awesome guy!), and partly to explore these two tactics, I reached out and managed to grab 30 minutes of his time in between the five dozen other things he has going on.
Martin Luther King, Jr. called it "the modern plague" and challenged us to heal it, especially since we knew how. That "plague" is overpopulation—but in Dr. King's time, U.S. population was driven by a high birth rate. Today, the major driver of U.S. population growth is mass immigration—up to 1.5 million people come to live in the U.S. every year, and have for years, through legal and illegal means. What does that have to do with the environment? Well, the last thing this planet needs is more overconsuming Americans, says environmental ethicist, author, progressive activist, and philosophy professor Dr. Philip Cafaro. Mass immigration is also the last thing needed by the poor people already living in America: it forces lower wages and more competition for low-skilled jobs. Yes, immigrants themselves can often build better lives here. And hey! Wealthy Americans and corporations get cheap labor and new markets. Phil Cafaro's excellent book, How Many Is Too Many?: The Progressive Argument for Reducing Immigration Into the United States, lays out sane, humane arguments you've probably never heard before. Too often, US immigration is talked about in a binary, polarizing way: you're a liberal for open borders, or you're a conservative who wants a wall. It takes on racial tones—you're either for poor people from other countries building a better life in the U.S., or you fear a changing demographic and retreat into nationalism. But what if… -You care about the serious environmental impacts? -You realize the connection between a "perpetual growth economy," which screws the planet, and the drive for more immigrants to work more cheaply and buy more stuff? -You understand how mass immigration drives economic inequality in the US? -You want to help the world's poor in a way that helps them build better lives in their own countries, cultures, and communities? -You realize the world has changed since Emma Lazarus wrote that poem? -You yourself are the descendent of immigrants and don't want to be selfish? And what if you wonder why the hell environmentalists don't talk about the impacts of immigration anymore, when it used to be a major issue? This conversation, and Phil's book, outline not only the problems, but suggestions for building better immigration policies: Open to refugees, home to Dreamers, but at a scale our biosystems can handle. Any "developed" country could benefit from his work. www.thebigchewpodcast.com

It's week five of the Champion's Mindset series and I am talking to Erin Cafaro MacKenzie. She is a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist in rowing and she has podiumed at every World Championship rowing competition that she has competed in – a total of six World Championship Gold Medals and two Bronze Medals. Erin and her husband currently run Power Speed Endurance, a sports-specific training program dedicated to improving skill, performance, fitness and overall potential. Erin's definition of the Champion's Mindset has evolved over the years. At first, it was related to an indomitable spirit – the “X factor” of just going. While that may be a common definition, Erin believes the Champion's Mindset is something that is more at peace, as opposed to forceful. “A champion is someone who is doing it not to beat someone else – it's for them.” At Power Speed Endurance, Erin and her husband are trying to figure out an equation for each sport to use speed as a monitor for skill. In most monostructural (or endurance) sports – like running, rowing and even skateboarding – the athlete's balance of friction and connection dictates the speed at which they can perform tasks, and the ability to perform those tasks relates directly to an athlete's skill. We've discussed Grit a lot during the Champion's Mindset series, and it's an idea that Erin has been exploring as well. Angela Duckworth has a fantastic TED Talk and book on the subject, but there is also a downside to Grit. Too much friction prevents us from realizing our fullest potential, but just the right amount of friction can propel us to amazing heights. It's rare for someone to make the Olympics once, let alone twice, and it's even more difficult than you might imagine when you consider the adversity and setbacks an intensive athlete can experience. In 2011, a month before the World Championships, Erin broke two ribs; one on the right and one on the left. It was hard for her to stay sane at the time, but, in hindsight, the break gave her perspective on what it means to be a champion. “If everything was going great and came easily, I probably wouldn't take as much interest in it.” After the 2012 Olympics, Erin had to develop a different perspective on fulfillment. Her whole adult life leading up to that was devoted to training and pursuing the win, and then she thoroughly accomplished that. Experiencing depression after a period of great accomplishment or during a big transition is common, and this is a good time to turn to your tribe for support. “Pain is one of our greatest teachers” Erin's ability to endure struggle actually became an obstacle at times, because having a high pain threshold also means having a low ability to evolve and to change. “When it comes to everyday life and you have painful thoughts, and you're just sitting on them versus actually dealing with them or doing something different so that they don't reoccur, then that's when it's pretty un-functional.” The greatest lesson that Erin has learned as an athlete is that being a champion is not about being the superstar – it's about being able to get the best out of your teammates. She is trying to apply this lesson by creating a platform for Power Speed Endurance coaches to share their strengths, reach more athletes and thrive. I appreciate Erin's vulnerability and authenticity on this week's episode, because it shows that even the greatest champions experience struggle and need help picking themselves back up. Communities and adversity can be really powerful tools to help us grow. Bob Cafaro was enjoying a successful career as a professional cellist with the Philadelphia Orchestra when he was struck with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in December, 1998. After some serious denial and three increasingly nasty attacks, he was forced to confront the reality and severity of his diagnosis. With Bob's eyesight worsening to the point of blindness and his hands unable to control the cello, it was only natural for his doctor to write him a note for permanent disability. And slip him a script for an antidepressant to help him cope with the loss of his profession, his livelihood, his passion, and his independent existence
Interview with Dr. Philip Cafaro, author of the new book: "How Many Is Too Many? The Progressive Argument for Reducing Immigration Into the United States." A review of the economic, environmental and cultural concerns facing America which outline a clear case for the limitation of both legal and illegal immigration. Surprisingly, perhaps, progressives and conservatives appear to be finding common ground on the common sense of this most controversial of subjects. Dr. Cafaro is a Professor of Philosophy at Colorado State University.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
