Talk Art is back for SEASON 13!!!! Woohooo!!!We meet leading artist Caroline Walker.Walker's paintings reveal the diverse social, cultural and economic experiences of women living in contemporary society. Drawing on her own photographic source material, Walker provides a unique window into the everyday lives of women. Blurring the boundary between objectivity and lived experience, Walker highlights often overlooked jobs performed by women and the psychologically charged spaces they inhabit. Walker explains: “The subject of my paintings in its broadest sense is women's experience, whether that is the imagined interior life of a glimpsed shop worker, a closely observed portrayal of my mother working in the family home, or women I've had the privilege of spending time with in their place of work. From the anonymous to the highly personal, what links all these subjects is an investigation of an experience which is specifically female.”Caroline Walker was born in 1982 in Dunfermline, Scotland. She lives and works in London.Blurring the boundary between objectivity and lived experience, the artist highlights often overlooked jobs performed by women and the psychologically charged spaces they inhabit.Previously encompassing locations such as Los Angeles, Palm Springs and the UK, Walker's scenes hint at the complexity of her subjects' lives whilst completely avoiding narrative resolution. Recent works have seen Walker cast her eye to her immediate surroundings in East London, reflecting on her wider community and the significance of encounters with anonymous individuals who are nevertheless integral to our daily existence. Often exploring the notion of ‘women's work', the artist captures specific spaces such as pharmacies, tailors, beauty salons, laboratories, bathhouses and modernist apartments.Walker presented a new body of large-scale paintings at the historic Fitzrovia Chapel in February 2022. The works were created following her residency at University College Hospital's maternity wing, during which the artist shadowed female midwives, nurses, doctors and cleaners. Sketches from the series were displayed by UCLH Arts at Street Gallery, London and the project was accompanied by an illustrated catalogue.Examples will also be included as part of a two-person presentation with Laura Knight at Nottingham Castle in March 2022.KM21, The Hague hosted ‘Windows', a significant solo exhibition of the artist's work in August 2021. An expansive show of Walker's preparatory studies and large-scale paintings titled ‘Women's Work' opened in May 2021 at Midlands Art Centre (MAC), Birmingham, UK. She features in the Hayward Gallery touring exhibition ‘British Art Show 9' in 2022. Walker's first solo show at Stephen Friedman Gallery, London will take place in April 2022, focussing on the artist's sister-in-law Lisa and her experience of motherhood. Walker obtained an MA in painting from Royal College of Art, London in 2009 and a BA (Hons) from Glasgow School of Art in 2004. Walker is also represented by GRIMM, Amsterdam / New York and Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Caroline is the co-owner of Dreamwalker Music Evolution which is their own artist development company along with Mike as well as a songwriter. The episode begins with Durell asking Mike and Caroline what are their earliest memories of music. Mike shared that he grew up playing football and once he got to high school he realized that he didn't have the size to keep playing without getting hurt. He remembers seeing a poster with a guy playing a guitar and he knew instantly he wanted to try playing the guitar and he knew that he had a strong work ethic that would provide the ability for him to become really good and he knew he wouldn't get hurt like he would have if he continued to play football. Caroline shares that her earliest memories of music were that she remembers her parents having a large record collection and listening to music all of the time. She shares that she remembers a lot of classical music as well as artists such as the Beatles, & James Taylor always being on. She shares that she played flute in the marching band in high school. Caroline says that her parents always had a lot of books around and that she was always reading which developed into a passion for writing. She ended up going into a career in counseling and it wasn't until about 5 years ago that she really developed a passion for writing lyrics. Durell asks Mike when did he know that he wanted to pursue music professionally as a career. He shares that he lost his mom and dad at an early age. He went to a recording school but his brothers were in the construction business and wanted him to join them because they didn't think it was possible to make a living as a musician. Mike shares that he went to work with his brothers on the road for 3 months and he says all he kept thinking was that he had to figure out how to make music work professionally because he couldn't see himself being a construction worker for the rest of his life. Mike says the first thing he did was he got a job in a music store as well as began teaching lessons which he says quickly picked up. He had several jobs that would allow him to stay around music and make a living. He shares that he decided to move to Orlando from Philadelphia because he wanted a new start. He moved down and began to establish himself within the music scene and started playing in studios as a session player. He shared that he was an original band and got nominated for a Grammy. The band disbanded and Mike decided that he would make the pivot into producing. He shared that he wanted to create a business and he knew that artists were no longer being developed the way they used to be so he along with Caroline decided that would be something worth getting into to help new artists prepare for the real world music industry. Caroline and Durell both agree that education is a major key to success. Durell asks Mike & Caroline how they approach artist development. They share that the cornerstone of what they do is “craft development”. Mike does a lot of work to make sure that their clients know how to write songs and do the creative process to the best of their ability. Caroline shares that their clients don't really enjoy the business aspect of music because it's not as fun but absolutely necessary. Caroline says that social media is an aspect that so many creatives don't like. Durell shares the reason why most indie creatives don't particularly like social media is because they oftentimes don't know who they are talking too and that's why he makes it a point to focus on that when he's working with his clients. Caroline shares that they tell their clients that if they just want to be famous then they can't guarantee that but what they will guarantee is that when they've completed their program there will be opportunities that can allow for a full time career in music. Durell, Mike, & Caroline end the episode talking about how they've diversified their income streams by focusing more on sync licensing. Mike shares that he finds it interesting how different the sync world is compared to working primarily with artists. Durell shares that he has learned so much from his mentor and friend Michele Vice-Maslin in regards to learning the different rules and what is expected of someone who wants to make a living within that world. Durell asks Caroline how she feels about artist management. Caroline says it wasn't something that they focused on within the company. She shared that because she didn't have a music business background she began to read Ari Herstand's book “How To Make It In The New Music Business” to get a better understanding of what to know to help their clients. Caroline shares that she went to conferences to learn and network as well. She shares that she dipped her toe a bit into the day-to-day management of a few artists and quickly realized the biggest challenge was getting them to want to put in the work that is really required to build success in today's music business.Mike and Caroline share that they have been focusing more on expanding their song catalog and that has been something they want to do a lot more of. How to Stop Worrying When There's a Lot to Worry About

You Are Not A Frog

In this episode of YANAF, we're talking about worry and anxiety, particularly rational worry and anxiety. You know the phrases, don't worry, it'll probably never happen, or ‘It's not like anyone's going to die!' – well what do we do when bad things may well happen, or people's lives and livelihoods are genuinely at risk? How do we stop ourselves from becoming overwhelmed with anxiety then?To explore this, we're joined by Psychiatrist and therapist Dr. Caroline Walker to talk about how to stop ourselves from feeling overwhelmed with worry even in the midst of worrying times. Even though we might not be able to control what's going on in the world, or even just our families or workplaces right now, one thing we do have more control over is how we deal with ourselves when we start feeling anxious or dwelling on unhelpful thoughts (even if they may be very rational). We can also stay focused on the present where everything is OK now. We talk about how worry can be helpful when it spurs us into action but when it's overplayed can cause us distress and actually make the bad things MORE likely to happen as we can't think straight or perform as well when we are in our sympathetic fight flight or freeze zones. We share some simple techniques you can use to reduce your anxiety which you can use anywhere EVEN in difficult times. So listen to this episode if you want to find out:Why do we need to be ‘more gazelle'Which emotions your anxiety may be masking and why this matters ANDHow to get yourself out of the vicious cycle of rumination and worryResourcesPermission to Thrive MembershipYou Are Not A Frog Episode 15: Eff-It Living with John C. Thistledown sells its books through the University of Toronto Press. Like all publishers in this COVID period, Thistledown has had to look at how to launch and market books without live events, but hopefully that will change soon.  Listen in as we hear another perspective on how authors should carefully choose the publishers they approach by doing their homework first to find the best fit!    https://www.thistledownpress.com/index.cfm—Richelle Wiseman: website | linkedin | facebook

The week’s episode is a special one as the Frog celebrates a year of podcasting! So this episode turns the table as YANAF regular, Dr Nik Kendrew, puts the spotlight on Rachel. They talk about everything from what this experience has taught Rachel, to the power of ‘F**k It’, how Nik’s inner chimp attacks in the supermarket & one guest’s squeaky bum time!Rachel wanted to share the conversations, ideas & experiences she encountered through her work with a wider audience to help more people than she was reaching through her courses.Through the podcast she’s enjoyed learning as much from her guests as you have, from conflict management to equality in the workplace it’s been an eye opening year of conversations. For a podcast series that’s dedicated to helping doctors, healthcare professionals & executives in high stress jobs. Nik notes that as well as being very busy, some of these jobs can be very lonely places & Rachel’s been really pleased to hear how many people have fed back the recurring phrase “it makes me feel like I’m not alone”.It’s perhaps no surprise that the most popular episode this year has been on COVID fatigue with Dr Caroline Walker. During the COVID crisis, this podcast has been a great way to reach out to and connect with people when stress, loneliness, fear & uncertainty have been prevalent across all sections of society and industry. Sharing stories is often one of the most helpful things for all of us to feel less alone in moments of difficulty or uncertainty. Nik shares a really poignant example of how sharing our stories can help others and save lives. So as a sign off to a great year of episodes, Rachel is inviting you to help shape future Frog episodes. This week Rachel is joined once more by Dr Caroline Walker, otherwise known as The Joyful Doctor to look at what on earth has happened over the past 6 months and what we can anticipate in the coming months. It’s fair to say that we’re currently in an adjustment phase, learning how to work and live to the current rules, anticipating changes to these rules and processing this seismic shift from how our lives used to operate. We’re seeing burnout from overwork, anxiety over the uncertain future and a general sense of grief and loss. It’s common for people to vent their anger towards those they feel safe with. We’re being asked to do more than ever and we need a plan to manage this. Consider the example of a professional footballer. If they were asked to play for 3 hours instead of 90 minutes what would they do? Devise a break plan, factor in more nutrition, add more to their team and so on. When we have extra pressure applied, what are we doing to make sure we can cope? There are things that will be out of your control right now, so Rachel and Caroline give a reminder about the ‘Zone of Power’ and how this powerful tool can bring you a sense of calm and empowerment. One ultimate top tip from Rachel and Caroline; Learn to leave things unfinished. This sounds unlikely but they present a good argument for its benefits.Useful Tools and Resources:Sign up here to receive a link to the CPD form downloads for each podcast which you can use for reflection and to submit for your appraisal. https://www.shapestoolkit.com/podcast-CPD-formsLooking for resilience training for your team, your organisation or your CCG or GP Training Hub? We’ll be tackling various different topics as they emerge in order to help doctors keep their head in the game and stay focussed and resilient. In this episode, we talk about the unrealistic expectations we have of ourselves right now. Perhaps we think we should be doing more to help? Improving ourselves? Doing that CPD we’ve never got round to doing? Spring cleaning the house or making our garden perfect? Yet many of us are finding that we’re just not able to do all this right now and our productivity seems to be lower than we’d like. This is OK.We need to adjust our expectations of ourselves (rather than ‘lower’ them)As doctors, we are so often driven by our need to ‘do’ and our need to help. We judge our worth by what we’ve achieved and so when we feel uncomfortable emotions such as anxiety or sadness we turn quickly to action to ‘fix’ the problem. Caroline and Rachel chat about the need for self-compassion and about how to recognise the emotions we are feeling. We discuss the vital question we need to ask ourselves ‘What do I need right now’ and also chat about how we can find it hard to receive help and compassion from others. In this episode, we talk about moral injury - the distress we feel when our actions (or lack of them) violate our moral or ethical code. Doctors are already being asked to work in ways that are alien to them and may feel quite wrong. We have been trained to care for the patient in front of us, and it becomes hard when we have to make difficult decisions which have a huge impact. We chat about the sorts of moral injury that frontline workers may experience, the role of ethical guidance and individual decision making and discuss the sorts of symptoms you may experience if you are suffering from moral injury. Connecting with others, having regular check-ins, not neglecting the basics in caring for yourselves and your teams are ways to help prepare for what may come. What else to do on the hottest day of the year so far but record a podcast! With a bumper crop of exhibitions, galleries, competitions and fairs to tackle, settle into our second Artfully podcast: Van Gogh in Britain, FOOD at the V & A, Beatrix Potter, Masterpiece, and a trio of women artists at Victoria Miro born out of the meteoric rise of social media profile @thegreatwomenartists. And on that note we discuss the high price artists pay when social media censors nudity in artworks. Finally, this episode's artist focus is on the grande dame of the YBA: Tracey Emin. We discuss why she continues to challenge audiences, Liz shares her own Emin story, and Jessie manages to compare her to Maggie Thatcher. You'll have to listen to find out why.... An A&E consultant, a psychiatrist, and two junior doctors swap notes on being disabled in the medical profession. Emergency medicine consultant, Dr Cieran McKiernan, speaks on the perils of self-diagnosis. He lost his leg after failing to treat a blister which became a 5cm-sq hole in his foot. Trainee GP, Dr Hannah Barham-Brown's wheelchair means she's regularly mistaken for a patient, while Dr Emily Burns spotted one patient's 'diagnosis' of Query Malingering - a euphemism for faking it - was actually Ehlers Danlos syndrome, a rare condition she has herself. Dr Caroline Walker says she hasn't got to go far to find doctors who, like her, have mental health difficulties. The foursome chat about the ups and down of the medical profession, the ambition to embrace diversity and how working less than full-time hours could be beneficial to all junior doctors. "Tell me all your thoughts on God, cuz I'd really like to meet her" and other womanly things etc. I love trees.
