Kelly Hall, the Executive Director of The Fairness Project, an organization focused on empowering voters through citizen-led ballot measures, has become the country's largest backers of abortion ballot measures, investing $30M to critical ballot campaigns like those in Arizona, Florida, Missouri, Montana, and Nebraska. Ballot measures have become a critical lifeline to strengthening, restoring and expanding abortion rights across the country. Kelly discusses what's on this ballot this year, including what's going on in Nebraska—where a competing anti-abortion measure aims to mislead voters. Ballot measures surged into the spotlight last year thanks to abortion rights, but they've long been a critical tool for enacting positive change. Joining us on this week's episode of "The Downballot" is Kelly Hall, the executive director of the Fairness Project, which has helped pass progressive ballot measures across the country for nearly a decade. Hall tells us how ballot campaigns differ from traditional campaigns, and why stakeholders often spend years debating when and whether to get behind a measure. She also explains why progressive issues often fare better than progressive candidates, and how the Sheriffs' Association and Chobani yogurt helped make Medicaid expansion a reality in deep-red Idaho.Co-hosts David Nir and David Beard, meanwhile, dissect this week's momentous Supreme Court decision that smacked down a radical right-wing argument that would have greenlit GOP gerrymandering and voter suppression nationwide, including why they're cautiously optimistic that a potential "ticking time bomb" in the ruling won't go off (at least, not to great effect). They also explain why Republicans shouldn't get too excited about landing a supposedly coveted recruit for Montana's Senate race. Finally, they discuss Sarah McBride's path-breaking entry into Delaware's House race, where a victory would make her the first openly trans member of Congress.Transcript.
In this episode, Dr. Falon Smith discusses how Go NAPSACC provides easy-to-use tools for state administrators, ECE technical assistance consultants, and ECE providers, and it has decades of research on its effectiveness in improving ECE practices, environments, and health behaviors. She explains how multiple states, guided by the CDC Spectrum of Opportunities Framework, implemented Go NAPSACC over a 5-year period; resulting in a total of 7,152 ECE programs with over 344,000 children reached. Go NAPSACC is unique in its ability to help states in their ECE-system health promotion efforts. This episode references the article titled "Multi-State Implementation of Go NAPSACC to Support Healthy Practices in the Early Care and Education Setting" by Margaret West, MPA, Carrie Dooyema, MSN, MPH, RN, Falon T. Smith, PhD, Erik A. Willis, PhD, Emily Clarke, RD, LDN, Aviva Shira Starr, MSW, Kelly Hall, MPH, Derek P. Hales, and Dianne S. Ward, EdD.

It's our 100th episode and as Obama would say, it's a BFD. It's a BFD not just because we've made it to the 1-0-0, BUT because we have a special double header episode with two kickass, badass, politicos. The episode is focused on ballot measures, specifically ballot measures as they relate to reproductive rights. Our interviews touch on the various processes per state on jumpstarting a ballot measure, what the journeys look like for getting them on the ballot, direct democracy, petitioning, and so much more. Basically, welcome to ballot measure 101. Oh, and the amazing guests?? Fine, we'll spill – we're joined by Kelly Hall, Executive Director of the Fairness Project who gives all the details on Michigan's repro rights ballot measure, and Amy Fitch Heacock, of Arizonans for Reproductive Freedom who shares the 411 on AZ's battle for a ballot measure and what's ahead in the fight for 2024. We're grateful for these convos and we're grateful for our listeners. Cheers to episode 100 and to 100 more :) We love you guys! Amanda Renteria the CEO of Code for America, an organization of people-centered problem solvers working to improve government in a meaningful way. We discuss making government work better for everyday people by design. The first season of When the People Decide has officially ended, but we have a few bonus episodes for you that we'll be sharing over the next few weeks. This first is a conversation with Kelly Hall, Executive Director of The Fairness Project. We mentioned The Fairness Project briefly in episode 7. It is one of the organizations working to fight back against the war on the initiative. The Fairness Project also works with ballot initiative organizers across the country — Jenna Spinelle talked with Kelly about some of the issues they're working on right now and some of the issues that could be heading to state and municipal ballots in the coming years. As we alluded to in episode 8, there are some hot button issues in the ballot measure arena right now and Kelly is at the forefront of it all. She comes to the role of Executive Director with a fierce passion for progress and over 15 years of experience making change in government, with the labor movement, and through winning ballot measure campaigns. Kelly was the architect of The Fairness Project's work expanding Medicaid in six states (soon to be seven!) and her passion for health policy has meant expansion of healthcare to over 830,000 people. Kelly worked on Capitol Hill during the drafting and passage of the Affordable Care Act, and then served in President Obama's administration helping to implement the law.

Michigan has a 1931 law on the books that criminalizes abortion. That law has not been enforced since 1973 when Roe v Wade was decided, but it hasn't been repealed either. And so it would take effect again should Roe be overturned because the state's GOP-controlled legislature said they don't plan to revoke it. We talk with Kelly Hall of The Fairness Project, which is gathering signatures to put a referendum on the ballot this fall to bypass the legislature and take the matter directly to voters. If they approve it, the measure would amend the state's constitution to make reproductive freedom a right. And in headlines: Vladimir Putin doesn't declare victory on Russia's Victory Day, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is projected to be the next president of the Philippines, and President Biden announced a plan to subsidize broadband Internet for low-income homes.Show Notes:Michigan Reproductive Freedom For All – https://mireproductivefreedom.org/Ban Off Our Bodies Rally on May 14th – https://bit.ly/3P1KxgNDonate to abortion funds, take action and more via Vote Save America – votesaveamerica.com/roeFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/whataday/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

This is the second installment of our four-part series celebrating generations. Join me as I talk with Kelly Hall about being a member of Generation X.
Violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins joins series host, soprano Allison Charney, in the second episode of the series, discussing and performing classical works by Bach, Shostakovich and Strauss along with an original adaptation of “Miracle of Miracles” from Fiddler on the Roof, sharing their un-Google-able insights and exploring the theme of hope – a commodity that feels hard to come by in our current world. MUSICAL SELECTIONS: C Major Sonata, 4th movement/ JS Bach – preformed by Kelly Hall-Tompkins, violin 1st Violin Concerto, cadenza/Shostakovich; preformed by Kelly Hall-Tompkins, violin Morgen/R. Strauss – preformed by Allison Charney, soprano; Kelly Hall-Tompkins, violin; Craig Ketter, piano “Miracle of Miracles” Bock/Eldor/Hall-Tompkins – preformed by Kelly Hall-Tompkins, violin; Craig Ketter piano Zuiegnung/R. Strauss – preformed by Allison Charney, soprano; Craig Ketter, piano In its pre-pandemic live incarnation – the innovative classical concert series PREFORMANCES with Allison Charney invited audiences to experience celebrated classical musicians in anticipation of their upcoming engagements on the world’s most prestigious stages. Now that live classical music has all but stopped, thus curtailing any upcoming engagements, acclaimed opera singer and series founder and host, Allison Charney, asks the existential question: If classical musicians are playing music but there’s no one there to hear it, have they really made music? Her answer: Not without an audience. Enter PREFORMANCES: Season of Hope! In these half-an-hour long episodes, Charney continues the PREFORMANCES mission of blurring the traditional barriers which exist between classical musicians and their audiences by providing an intimate and personal glimpse into top-level artists’ practices along with her signature “un-Google-able” insights – all with a focus on the series’ theme of hope. In addition, Allison and her guests will perform multiple musical selections on each episode. New episodes will air every other Tuesday night and be made available the following morning on the PREFORMANCES website, as well as in podcast form on iTunes and Spotify. Throughout its previous eleven seasons, PREFORMANCES With Allison Charney has presented over 100 of the preeminent musicians of our time. Notable appearances include those by New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert, Metropolitan Opera stars William Burden and Maria Zifchak, “Queen of the Flute,” Carol Wincenc, violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins of Broadway’s “Fiddler on the Roof” fame, and concert pianists Joel Fan and Navah Perlman, just to name a few. In addition, the series has presented new classical works by composers such as Michael Ching, Moshe Knoll, Mary Ellen Childs, Russell Platt and Kim D. Sherman. Live concerts typically run an hour and a half, with no intermission. PREFORMANCES with Allison Charney embraces artists, audiences and music of all backgrounds, ethnicities, orientations and world-views. PREFORMANCES denounces racism and bigotry of any kind. We stand committed to equality, diversity, accessibility and combatting injustice; anything less is unacceptable. Support the show (http://www.preformances.org/support/)

Welcome back my friends. I sit down with an old friend of mine, the OG, Kelly Hall. She shares her experiences in moving to LA for the arts and what it’s been like surviving in Hollywood as an actor. Despite living in Miami for most of her life, raised by Cubans and Americans, we also discover that she is actually a full quarter French (there’s absolutely no sign of it btw, besides maybe her love for bread.) We discus why racism is stupid (obviously), why she can’t watch scary movies unless she knows who’s going to die, and we invent an all new awards series called “The Backyard Awards.” So shut up and listen up. Here’s Conversations From a Room. Love, Kris. instagram: @kelly_hall @kristianlugo
