In our latest episode, Ryan talks with David Boxerbaum (Hollywood Agent and Partner at Verve) to illuminate that process. We also discuss David's high-profile deals, including recent bidding wars for “Occupant” which ended in a high 6 figure sale to New Line, and “I Am Not Alone” which sold to Netflix in another high-six-figure deal.

Filmmaker and YouTuber Ryan Connolly of Film Riot joins Gemma and Slim to throw some Dutch angles on his four Letterboxd faves, which all happen to be action films of the 1990s: Speed; Die Hard with a Vengeance; The Game and The Matrix. Plus: why Speed has the greatest film score of all time, how did that bus jump that gap, Jeff Daniels and Dennis Hopper cheek-to-cheek, how Keanu reinvented the masculine action hero, how Michael Douglas reinvented it right back, sequels that are better than originals, being able to smell the stink on John McClane through the screen, why '90s practical action stunts just rule, why The Game is a great holiday movie, why Spielberg is the GOAT at the “moving master”, believing in yourself, the importance of working with nice people, the supremacy of Jefferson Airplane's ‘White Rabbit', and why Ryan doesn't rate anything on Letterboxd (except Jurassic Park). Lists & Links: The Letterboxd list of films mentioned in this episode; Ryan's “action films from the 1990s” list, reviews of Speed by Terry, The Game by Dfred22 and Ian West Credits: This episode was recorded in Dallas, Auckland and greater Philadelphia, and edited by Slim. Facts by Jack. Booker: Brian Formo. Transcript by Sophie Shin. Art by Samm. Theme: ‘Vampiros Dancoteque' by Moniker. The Letterboxd Show is a TAPEDECK production.

Hey, y'all. I am Shay. This is thebuzzr podcast. Welcome & enjoy. Episode 65. First, music history for July 26th. In 1969 Johnny Cash released the single, “A Boy Named Sue”. Cash was at the height of his popularity when he recorded the song live at California's San Quentin State Prison at a concert on February 24, 1969. The song tells the tale of a young man's quest for revenge on a father who abandoned him at 3 years of age and whose only contribution to his entire life was naming him Sue. Toronto, Canada country rock artist Ryan Connolly joins us today. Ryan is the former frontman and founder of The Mudslingers. Country Rock with a “sleek twist of lyrics and riffs that will leave you craving another lick.” Ryan's EP, his debut as a solo artist, releases soon. On the show we spin tracks from the album. The resulting music is the perfect blend of old/young Nashville with several styles of classic rock. The artists builds upon his influences rather than copy traditional styles. Ryan Connolly has a sound all his own. Show up for the episode and get to know this artist. Few upcoming acts can pull off making music this good. Enjoy the show! SO-FLO ROOTSTodd was born in Hollywood, Florida and, although he excelled in sports, the craft of acting came most naturally to him. When he wasn't playing baseball, football or studying martial arts, he and his friends would re-enact scenes from their favorite movies (Jaws and Willy Wonka were frequent choices). In his senior year of high school, Todd was drafted from the football team into the Theater program, starring in the school play and winning district improv competitions. He entered Vanderbilt University on the pre-law track, but soon became more interested in the school's theater program, which included one of the best-equipped true black box theaters in the country. He performed in 13 plays at Vandy, and graduated with a hunger to learn more about acting.SEEKING CHOPSA year after graduating college, Todd headed to New York to attend The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater. The Playhouse had been rated the #1 Acting Program in the U.S. by the Cambridge University Press, and Sanford Meisner's program had the reputation of being one of the toughest in the country. Only 75 students were accepted into the program; and of those, just 24 were invited back to complete the second year. Todd figured, if he could make it there, he could make it anywhere... but did he have the chops? The answer came quickly. At the end of his first year at the Playhouse, Todd was offered a role in the Second-Year Production - the only first-year student to be given such an honor. He was invited back to complete the second year, and he's proud to wear badge of a Neighborhood Playhouse Graduate!CHANGE OF LOCATIONAfter graduating from the Playhouse, Todd moved to Los Angeles with some friends from school, and began trying to navigate the entertainment industry. Just as he was beginning to see some success in L.A., Todd and his family experienced a terrible loss: his brother was killed in a car accident, and Todd moved back to Florida to be with his family. Topics include the celebraiton of Towel Day, Star Wars birthday, and a new comic shop. The Flick Pick for the week is Clueless, a quintessential 90’s teen hit. A long stinger brings a shout out to Johnny’s new show That 90’s Show and plans to see Brad Williams live the following week. The Knights were joined in the Mixlr chat by Revelstoke Jim (@revelstokejim), Tom Sherlock (@judgefunkyboy), Ryan Connolly (@kaarval), Dianae (@Dianae173), and Marianne (@mv_ughn).

In this installment the Knights start off, really off, but after a few moments they get back on track. Ceebs shares her Disney Day stories and the Knights fall into a Lego rathole. The Knights discuss the latest Star Trek Beyond and Ghostbusters trailers which leads them into a discussion of what makes a good trailer. This week’s Flick Pick was suggested by uberfriend of the show, Matt from The SLS Cast, and he chose Mel Brooks’ 1974 satirical classic Blazing Saddles. The Knights were joined in the Mixlr chat by Matt Quinton (@nittwit12345), Ryan Connolly (@kaarval), Tom Kaytt (@tkaytt), Tom Sherlock (@JudgeFunkyBoy), Marc Thorner (@MarkoShark), Johnny Whitetrash (@NotThatJohnny), and Marianne (@mv_ughn).

Incapable of being serious for too long, the Knights dive into topics such as Free Comic Book Day, LEGO Dimensions, plans to harness Ceebs’ allergies as a renewable energy source and Kitteh’s coronation. The Flick Pick for the week is Captain America: Civil War which the Knights saw just 8 hours prior to the start of the show, and they totally didn’t hate it. Multiple flicks were mentioned, but the Knights never landed on a Flick Pick so they talked about the packaging of their new Star War: The Force Awakens Blu-rays. Statistics show that most podcasts peter off in the first six weeks. We're now six MONTHS strong into ours, and it's only getting better (IMHO). Six months of a "Radiolab" and "This American Life" style show about the art and craft of cinema and filmmaking, delivered EVERY WEEK, has been quite a feat. Six months of stories that will inspire, encourage and/or just flat-out entertain. Whether you're a filmmaker, a photographer, or any other kind of artist, the themes and topics we explore will connect with you.To celebrate this milestone, we're looking back at some of our favorite stories. Today we start our journey to find that elusive creature known as one's signature style. What exactly does it mean for a filmmaker, or any artist for that matter, to have a signature style? How does he or she get one? How do they develop it? Why should we care? Today we start in earnest the core topic for this first season of Radio Film School. Everything beforehand has been building up and preparing us for this journey. And we have some very inspiring interviews to start us off.Award-winning filmmaking Kevin Shahinian, renown for his Bollywood-style wedding films and Hollywood-calibre production values, provides incredible and poignant insight into the style question from a sophisticated point of view. I have a discussion with Film Riot host Ryan Connolly about his style (and whether or not he thinks he has one). And "Legends of the Knight" director Brett Culp rounds us off with some sage advice on how to develop one's personal style. In the bonus segment post-credits, I FINALLY get around to discussing with JD how it was he that prompted me to pursue filmmaking full-time as a profession.Music in this EpisodeWe have some more great use of Song Freedom songs. Today we have a very special bonus episode of the show. A couple of weeks ago we had Ryan Connolly of Film Riot fame talking about the disasters he encountered making his short film “U.F. Oh Yeah.” Ryan's DP on that shoot was the talented Mr. Ryan Booth. Ryan Booth is the creator of Serialbox.tv, a cinematic sensation whereby Booth and his team record one-take acoustical performances of indie bands, shoot them with multiple cameras, and edit it music video style. If you’ve never seen them, go check ‘em out at Serialbox.tv.But here’s the thing, Ryan Booth’s style of cinematography is very different from the type of work Ryan Connolly usually puts out. I was curious as to why Connolly chose Booth to DP this film. In today’s bonus episode we hear from both of them regarding that decision.

A film set is kinda like a spaceship barreling through space. Something almost always goes wrong. This week we have one of my favorite episodes of the show so far. It's fun, funny, yet still packs a potent and poignant punch. We hear from We Make Movies CEO Sam Mestman and Film Riot host Ryan Connolly about some of the most disastrous film shoots they've directed. As is always the case in life, from these challenges came great lessons. Then that international dapper DP Philip Bloom ties it all very nicely with a bow at the end. This episode is quite special.
