Copy Club is a community for marketers who want to help each other do great things. And there's a lot of them out there with the Copy Club community having grown to over 1000 members from over 800 brands since Lottie founded it in 2014.After working with massive global brands including Proctor & Gamble, Lacoste, and Dolce & Gabbana, Lottie created Copy Club as a means to feel less lonely in her job as Head of Marketing for PROPERCORN, who were at the time one of the five fastest growing businesses in the UK.She didn't know where to turn to for help and wanted to make friends who might make her life easier, and who, she could in turn support, so she took matters into her own hands and made that kind of place a reality. The Copy Club community is now a mega resource of some of the brightest minds in marketing with a slack channel where people can share and solve their challenges with other members, monthly talks diving into key marketing skills, regular social events, over 100 hours of recorded content, oh and 2% of their top-line revenue goes to charity, which is no small number as they have reached over one million in annual revenue. In this episode we discuss:The lessons Lottie learned at P&G and how those apply to high growth startups, as well as what is totally different about startup marketing!Building a business slowly and sustainably without investment, but still growing to exciting revenuesLearning from burnoutAnd community building adviceLinks:Checkout Copy Club - https://thecopyclub.co.uk

There is a common saying in the copywriting world: only rookies write from scratch.Seasoned copywriters like me never start with a blank page. We typically have a considerable amount of customer research which gives us all of the messaging and words we need to write. And when we match that customer research with a copywriting formula or a framework, the copy is assembled into a sales message that's designed to connect and convert. In this episode of ill communication, I'm sharing a copywriting formula that's perfect for businesses and charities, especially as we approach the end of the year. This copywriting formula is a little bit different than some of the others that I have shared on the podcast. This formula is called ACCA. This stands for Awareness, Comprehension, Conviction, and Action. It gives you a chance to provide a little more education and explanation behind the problems your reader is facing.Tune in to learn more about what this copywriting formula is, how to use it, and why it works! ill communication: copywriting tips & sales strategies for small businesses
Simplicity is the secret to sales, and in this episode of ill communication, you're going to find out why. The last thing you want to do is overwhelm your reader or sales prospect with too many choices. You don't want to have a metaphorically jam-packed shelf of offers that makes your readers confused and so paralyzed about the choice that they choose to leave. That's why today's episode about the rule of one is so important. The rule of one is the foundation for all great copywriting. It reminds us to focus on writing for one reader, talk about one big idea, provide one offer or promise, and ask for one call to action. Focus on your one reader or ideal buyer. Imagine you're having a face-to-face conversation with her. Talk about her problems, desires, objections, and dreams. When you write to your one reader, she'll know you're talking to her and that you understand her and her problems. In every sales message you write, whether it's a Facebook ad, social media post, or sales email, you want to focus on one big idea or theme instead of trying to tackle them all. You also want to give them only one action to take so that you can increase your conversions or sales. Tune in to this episode to learn why simplicity is so important and how to use the rule of one in your sales copy. Lottie Unwin founder of The Copy Club... Traditional FMCG marketing doesn't work for startups. A great episode where we hear from Lottie on all sorts of topics but the headline and key learning is that traditional FMCG marketing is very different to what is needed in the startup world.
I sit down with Lottie Unwin, Founder of The Copy Club. We explore key learnings from the early stages of her career, why marketing mates are helpful, creating an octopus business model, what it takes to build a community (I mean, really build a community!), how brands can rethink their approach to community, fostering customer conversations and the do's and don'ts of personal branding. Enjoy ✌️
Have you ever thought about starting something beyond the day job, but weren't sure if you should bother? Lottie Unwin is the founder of Copy Club, a thriving community of entrepreneurial marketers with a 20-strong HQ team that's growing 100% YoY. But it didn't always look this… In this episode, hear how Copy Club began as Lottie was lonely in her role and so brought a group of marketers together over supper. Slowly, but surely, Copy Club grew as Lottie “followed the scent” of the things her community needed and what she could bring to the table. During this high energy discussion, you'll be inspired to prototype your ideas into action by creating a quick and dirty “MVP” (minimum viable product) and not letting perfect be the enemy of the good. We learn how it's always day one at Copy Club. Tune in as we debate the challenges of “work hard, play hard” culture and how Lottie manages her mental health following a breakdown last year. Introducing Lottie Unwin. She runs The Copy Club, a micro community for marketeers and founders looking to grow their network, share their knowledge and up their skills. They run monthly social events, run their own courses and have a super engaged slack channel. They also do mentor matching for marketeers starting out and run their own recruitment service. To date they have done 150+ events in person and online, have 10+ courses and have over 700 members. Not bad. Micro communities are massively on their rise in both their relevance and importance. You only have to look at Glossier, Bumble Biz and Wall Street Bets to recognise their potential impact. However, sometimes these platforms find it hard to monetise without backing and support. In this episode we talk about how she turned a passion project into a fast growing business, the need for more micro-communities and the power of octopus business models.

Having completed her graduate training at marketing powerhouse Proctor & Gamble, Lottie then joined Propercorn to lead their marketing efforts. Missing the support that P&G provided she quickly decided to seek out other connections who could help her on her journey - and she was soon regularly going for coffees and drinks with people doing similar roles in other companies. Copy Club started as a simple dinner - and it was only when she moved to India that she realised she had the beginnings of a business.Fast forward to today, she has a successful business that employs a team of ten, and runs courses, events and recruitment for start ups. We talk about why monetising feels so scary, why selling can feel gross (and how you can avoid that) and why it's OK not to have a plan. To join the Out of Hours circle sign up here. This week I'm chatting to Lottie Unwin, founder and creator of The Copy Club, a network with a difference. And she's the Head of Marketing for drinks brand Nix and Kix. Listen to this episode for some brilliant insights into building a small but mighty community and pivoting a business through lockdown. Here's what we chat about: >> Starting a networking group by not meaning to start a networking group. Allowing organic growth to develop an idea based on what people want and need rather than a master plan. >> How Lottie used her need to bounce ideas off other heads of marketing to develop the seed of the idea that became Copy Club. >> Letting a vision crystalise before you begin to drive it forward. >> Harnessing co-learning can feel like a conversation rather than official networking. >> Having people around you at work and in life that are interested in what you do. >> Lottie's fundamental belief about networking and why this has attracted people to The Copy Club. >> The importance of personal development within startups and how you can do this without a budget. >> Why 'free events' are ineffective when they are hidden sales pitches and business development. >> Having a 'no selling' rule and evolving beyond this to create a thriving freelancer community. >> Nurturing a community first and controlling the atmosphere by design is key to creating a space where conversations can develop. >> Why The Copy Club is called The Copy Club (which has nothing do to with copywriting). And is inspired by Shopping Safaris. >> Challenging yourself to join up dots and create real innovation. And using time hacks from this. >> The transition from in-person events to online events during lockdown. And how lockdown accelerated plans. >> Growing a team as a small business. The difference between external perception and internal actions. >> Giving a percentage of membership fees away to charity and why that matters to Lottie. >> Harnessing the power of recommendations and referrals. >> A membership where members get stuck in and make it special. >> Tracking the right metrics for your business - and using that to make decisions.
