V for Vegan: Mantra for Sustainability The conventional theory of change is that in order for the Vegan movement to grow, the Out Vegans must reach out to the Closeted Vegans and convince them through the health, environmental, ethical and spiritual aspects of Veganism to come out of the closet and act on their true feelings regarding the systematic and unnecessary exploitation of animals (including humans) on Planet A.n During my visit to India, my interactions with Out Vegans in India have convinced me that we may have this backwards. Vegan First. How Hard is That? A recent Newsweek article about climate change and the Los Angeles fires was an example of such irresponsible journalism that it even used the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), headed by a former dairy industry lobbyist, Tom Vilsack, as a source for the greenhouse gas emissions contribution of animal agriculture. In this episode we meet with producer and writer, Kip Andersen, known for the documentaries Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret, What The Health, and Seaspiracy. He tells us about how and why he got started on his plant based journey and into the film industry. Kip has learned a lot of things about the food industry, our health, and how it all affects how we live life or perceive our own well being. One amazing thing he has uncovered is how much animal meats and fats play a role in diabetes as opposed to the widely believed assumptions that it mainly comes from consuming sugar. We learn how much of the environment and forest is destroyed by man, and how much plastic affects the ocean and nature, and then we discuss the future of health and where Kip sees the industry going. Getting into a plant based journey and filmmaking 0:40 About Cowspiracy 3:29 How Kip went about making the movie 8:58 Shocking aftermath of What The Health 18:16 Seaspiracy 25:50 Truths learned from Seaspiracy 30:28 Plastic 33:44 Hope for the future 36:45 Foods Kip eats 43:33 Where to learn more about Kip 46:01 “All of our films have a facts page, and so if anyone debates you on this, go to our facts page. Every single one is double sourced. We have to go through so [many] legal protocols to have these films on Netflix because this is a trillion dollar industry. One false claim and they could sue us. So these facts are true. If they're not, the egg industry would sue us, period.” 23:43 @kipandersen https://www.cowspiracy.com/

According to Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret, the main cause of global warming is not fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas - it’s animal agriculture. In this groundbreaking feature-length environmental documentary from intrepid filmmaker Keegan Kuhn, he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. In today’s episode of the Plant-based profit show, we talk to Keegan Kuhn, Co-director of Cowspiracy and What The Health and several other acclaimed documentaries, who is a videographer, award-winning documentary filmmaker, and professional musician living in the east bay of San Francisco. Keegan’s film career has taken him as far as the remote interior of Alaska to document modern homesteaders, to the high deserts of the American west filming the nation’s remaining wild horses, to rural agricultural communities and dirty urban streets. He is motivated by a deep desire to shed light on vegan-themed stories and major issues around social justice.

An interview with physician & nutrition expert Dr John McDougall. In this interview Dr John McDougall shares his understanding of the human diet, an understanding backed by over 50 years of study into the scientific, medical, & even archaeological literature, as well as over 40 years of successfully preventing, treating & reversing patient’s illnesses through nutrition.Dr McDougall also stresses the urgent importance of our food choices for the health of the planet, highlighting the impact that modern agriculture has on our ecosystem & climate. For many years Dr McDougall lived & worked in Santa Rosa, California, an area which was devastated by fire in 2017. The McDougall’s survived but lost their home & all their possessions, as did the entire community. When Dr McDougall talks about climate change it is from raw personal experience, the savage impact of the fire clearly audible in his voice & fuelling the urgency of his message, “The world is worth saving, it really is”, “if we get the food right we might have a chance… that’s how important I think the food is”. For many years Dr McDougall used the catchphrase “It’s the food” with reference to the health of individual patients. Now that same message can be applied to our impact on planet Earth. If we as a collective can understand the impact of modern agriculture on the ecosystem we can limit the damage we are doing & give Planet Earth a chance to recover. The greatest power we have is how we spend our money at the checkout, what we choose to buy and eat. Agribusiness will respond to customer demand so choose wisely, spend wisely and eat wisely – for your health and the health of the planet. To understand the impact of modern animal agriculture upon the environment, please view this video entitled “COWSPIRACY - The Sustainability Secret in about 15 minutes (Short Version)”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSjE8xw_-Dg Dr McDougall has published a wealth of information on health and nutrition, a lifetime’s work, available for free on his website www.drmcdougall.comHis book “The Starch Solution” is available from good booksellers, as are the many cookbooks full of healthy recipes by his wife Mary.Dr John McDougall Biography from www.drmcdougall.com“A physician and nutrition expert who teaches better health through vegetarian cuisine, John A. McDougall, MD has been studying, writing, and speaking out about the effects of nutrition on disease for over 50 years. Dr. John and Mary McDougall believe that people should look and feel great for a lifetime. Unfortunately, many people unknowingly compromise their health through poor dietary habits.Dr. McDougall is the founder and director of the nationally renowned McDougall Program: a ten-day residential program that he and Mary McDougall host at a luxury resort in Santa Rosa, CA where medical miracles occur through diet and lifestyle changes. In addition to her formal training as a nurse, Mary McDougall provides many of the delicious recipes that make the McDougall Program not only possible, but also a pleasure. Dr. McDougall has cared for thousands of patients for 5 decades. His program not only promotes a broad range of dramatic and lasting health benefits but, most importantly, can also reverse serious illnesses including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and others, all without the use of drugs.A graduate of Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine, Dr. McDougall performed his internship at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, and his medical residency at the University of Hawaii. He is certified as an internist by the Board of Internal Medicine and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He and Mary are also the authors of several nationally best-selling books as well as the co-founders of Dr. McDougall’s Right Foods, which produces high quality vegetarian cuisine to make it easier for people to eat well on the go.”Interview also available to stream or download at itunes https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/t... & youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrq99mkXID-1ELpu0VMmk5g/videosFollow The Truth Health Freedom Podcast at www.facebook.com/thfpodcast & www.twitter.com/truthpodcast

Here at The ChickPeeps we've talked about being vegan for the animals and vegan for our health but we haven't talked about being vegan for the health of humankind and animals together aka. THE ENVIRONMENT! To address this topic, we interview the mastermind filmmakers Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn who put the environmental impact of veganism into focus with their groundbreaking documentary, Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret. In this interview Kip and Keegan expand on the information shared in Cowspiracy and explain precisely what impact one individual can have on the environment by being vegan. Also on this epsiode… Kip and Keegan explain why they are actually ethical vegans. Robbie gets nerdy with Keegan about the true cost of animal agriculture on the environment. ‘Literally anything you could care about in the environmental world, raising animals for food is the primary driver of its destruction, and yet it's basically overlooked. How organic or grass-fed meat is worse for the environment. Why animal agriculture is also a people problem: ‘If there wasn't such a demand for meat dairy and eggs in the so-called "developed world", we wouldn't see these rates of poverty that we see - and starvation and hunger - in the developing [world].' What difference can one person going vegan actually make? Non-vegan environmentalists: how to talk to hardcore environmentalists who reject veganism. Mangoes from India? Avocados from Mexico? The environmental impact of importing foods from around the world, and do we need to be focusing on local produce? Are almond farms causing drought? ‘This is a movement from the grassroots up, I think it's going to need to be us hitting a critical mass as vegans and vegetarians and environmentalists and compassionate people.' Is veganism enough? Kip expands on how else we can be mindful of Mother Earth. Kip and Keegan talk about their exciting upcoming projects. Some listener feedback from the companion pets episode and an unusual ensemble for your cat. CORRECTION: In this episode Keegan mentions that cows can drink 150 gallons of water per day. Whether you are thinking of improving your health by simply eating more vegetables or you are already eating and advocating a whole foods plant-based diet, there is much to gain from this interview with Dr Michael Klaper. Dr Klaper is a leading general (family) practitioner, an internationally recognized educator, and a highly sought-after speaker on diet and health. For over 40 years he has helped thousands of people around the world to reclaim their health and to improve their well-being. He is the author of several books (including Vegan Nutrition: Pure and Simple and Pregnancy, Children, and the Vegan Diet) as well as numerous DVDs and Videos on Demand and a series of “Healthy YOU Webinars”. Dr Klaper graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago in 1972. He served his medical internship at Vancouver General Hospital in British Columbia, Canada and undertook additional training in surgery, anaesthesia, orthopaedics and obstetrics at the University of California Hospitals in San Francisco. As his medical career progressed, he began to realize that many of the diseases his patients brought to his office - clogged arteries (atherosclerosis), high blood pressure (hypertension), obesity, adult onset (sugar) diabetes, and even some forms of arthritis and asthma - were made worse, or actually caused, by the high-fat, overly processed Standard American Diet (SAD). Which is not that different to the Standard Australian Diet! Dr Klaper studied the link between diet and disease, eventually leading him to implement nutritionally based therapies in his practice with dramatic results. Many of his patients lost weight, had more energy and had lower blood pressure and cholesterol values. More importantly, many of their chronic diseases improved or resolved completely, often allowing his patients to reduce or discontinue their medication entirely. He practiced in Maui, Hawaii from 1995-2006, then Whangarei, New Zealand from 2006-2009 before relocating to Santa Rosa, California where he is a medical consultant at the TrueNorth Health Center, a nutritionally-based medical clinic specializing in therapeutic fasting and health improvement through a whole-food, plant-based diet. Whilst most of us may not have had the privilege of meeting Dr Klaper in person, you may know him through the films "Diet for a New America", "Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret" and "What The Health". Just like Claire and Andrew of the New Normal Project, Dr Klaper believes in plant-based nutrition, optimal sleep, frequent physical activity, and meaningful connections to work and other people. In this conversation Dr Klaper talks about: His practice at TrueNorth with plant-based nutrition and water fasting Some real-life patient examples of plant-based nutrition in action How some cancers seem to respond to fasting followed by plant-based nutrition How he began eating a plant-based diet himself Some of the difficulties people face as they change to a plant-based diet and some tips to help them His approach to eating out with family and friends The risks of eating too much restaurant food (salt, sugar and oil) His approach to eating chocolate The benefits of exercise The poisonous effects of drinking alcohol How New Zealand and Australia are catching up to California as plant-based communities How the environment and the planet need us to give up eating animal products The benefits of even small steps in the direction of a whole foods plant-based diet His enjoyment of and the importance of live events to advocate for better health His excitement at the steady progression of plant-based eating over recent times Some of the highlights of the Australian and New Zealand tour he just finished Resources from people and things mentioned in this episode: Michael Klaper website: https://doctorklaper.com/ Michael Klaper on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/michaelklapermd/ TrueNorth Health Center: http://www.healthpromoting.com/ Movie “Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret”: http://www.cowspiracy.com/ Movie “What The Health”: http://www.whatthehealthfilm.com/ Documentary “Serving Love” http://www.rawfoodforlife.org/ Plant Powered Brisbane: https://www.plantpurepods.com/podsdirect/brisbane-australia-group/ Raw Events Australia: http://www.raweventsaustralia.com/ Serotonin Eatery: www.serotonindealer.com New Normal Project website: https://www.newnormalproject.com.au/ New Normal Project shop: https://www.newnormalproject.com.au/shop New Normal Project instagram: @newnormalproject New Normal Project twitter: @newnormalproj New Normal Project facebook: "newnormalproject"

(We spoke to Kip back in late June, just after his film 'What The Health' was released on Netflix) It was an honor, and a thrill, to have Kip Andersen on the show! Kip is the co-director & producer of the outstanding documentaries Cowspiracy and What The Health. Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret is a groundbreaking feature-length environmental documentary following intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption and pollution, is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry, and is a primary driver of rainforest destruction, species extinction, habitat loss, topsoil erosion, ocean “dead zones,” and virtually every other environmental ill. Yet it goes on, almost entirely unchallenged. What the Health is the groundbreaking follow-up film from the creators of the award-winning documentary Cowspiracy. The film exposes the collusion and corruption in government and big business that is costing us trillions of healthcare dollars, and keeping us sick. What The Health is a surprising, and at times hilarious, investigative documentary that will be an eye-opener for everyone concerned about our nation’s health and how big business influences it. Very exciting to hear that Kip is working on a few other projects and it sounds like 2018 is going to be a big year! Executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret follows intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. As Andersen approaches leaders in the environmental movement, he increasingly uncovers what appears to be an intentional refusal to discuss the issue of animal agriculture, while industry whistleblowers and watchdogs warn him of the risks to his freedom and even his life if he dares to persist. Kip Andersen’s environmental awakening came as a result of An Inconvenient Truth. After seeing the film, he began to recycle religiously, turn off lights constantly, shower infrequently, and ride a bike instead of driving. Andersen believed he was doing everything he could to help the planet by following the guidelines of national and international environmental organizations, but his life took a different direction when he found out animal agriculture is the leading cause of environmental destruction. He is the founder of AUM Films and Media, a 501c3 non-profit focused on creating films and media that promote thrivability, compassion, and harmony for all life. He is also an entrepreneur, as well as a certified Jivamukti and Kundalini yoga teacher. He is a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo school of business and has called San Francisco home for more than a decade. Keegan Kuhn is a videographer, award-winning documentary filmmaker, and professional musician living in the east bay of San Francisco. He has worked with nonprofit organizations and been involved in social justice movements for virtually his entire life. As a filmmaker, he helps organizations reach an ever-greater community of supporters with the highest possible quality films and videos. His film career has taken him as far as the remote interior of Alaska to document modern homesteaders, to the high deserts of the American west filming the nation’s remaining wild horses, to rural agricultural communities and dirty urban streets. He is motivated by a deep desire to shed light on untold stories of the most downtrodden in our society, and to raise to awareness through greater visibility of social justice issues. “[Animal agriculture] is one of the largest industries on the planet, with the biggest environmental impact. And they are trying to keep us in the dark about how they are operating…”Will Potter, independent journalist & TED Senior FellowA little over a year ago, I shared an amazing conversation with Kip Andersen & Keegan Kuhn, the dynamic filmmaking duo behind Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret. If you missed that episode, I encourage you to check it out here– it's one of my most popular episodes to date.An Inconvenient Truth meets Blackfish, Cowspiracy is an incredibly sobering and powerful (yet also funny and entertaining) documentary that takes a hard, unflinching look at the incredibly negative impact of animal agriculture on the health, well being and sustainability of our planet and it's precious, dwindling resources.Whether we are talking about carbon emissions, climate change, the blindingly rapid destruction of our rain forests, over consumption of water, species extinction, the depletion and destruction of our soil, the pollution of our rivers, lakes and oceans or the obliteration of natural wildlife habitats, you might be surprised to discover the very inconvenient and uncomfortable truth that animal agriculture is the industry by far most responsible for the global environmental catastrophe we currently face.If this is true, then why aren't we talking about it more?Cowspiracy is the rather shocking tale of what Kip and Keegan discovered trying to answer this very question. The little indie film that could, Cowspiracy is a true grassroots phenomenon. Crowd-source funded, rejected by the film festival circuit and lacking distribution, Kip and Keegan spent the last year traveling the country in a van attending independently organized, homespun screenings. Getting the word out one screen at a time, one audience at a time. Then something truly amazing happened. The film fell into the hands of Leonardo DiCaprio. The biggest movie star in the world didn't just fall in love with the movie, he came on board as Executive Producer with a mission: that Cowspiracy become required viewing for everyone and anyone who gives a slightest damn about the health of our planet. This week that mission moves towards reality. On Tuesday, September 15, Cowspiracy will premiere on Netflix worldwide. For those of you that have already seen the film, this is a new and improved cut — tighter with updated facts, it demands another view. The impact of Leonardo's name and credibility on the film's reach is astronomical and cannot be overstated. I am extremely proud to be an early supporter and associate producer on this project. I'm excited for mainstream audiences to finally discover this important film. I'm over the moon that Kip and Keegan will now be recognized on a mass level for their incredible work. But mostly I am excited for the dynamic environmental conversation that will inevitably ensue. And the positive changes to follow.Picking up where our first conversation left off, today's podcast covers a lot of ground, including:* the broad effects of animal agriculture on society* ethical & environmental concerns* the fallacy of ‘sustainable' livestock* the Alan Savory myth* soil & ecosystem degradation* educating charitable organizations * grass roots vs. mainstream media* how Leonardo DiCaprio got involved* the Netflix effect on enviro advocacyKip and Keegan are truly breaking paradigms. We start by discussing the new documentary Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret, which delves into how animal agriculture is the primary source of environmental degradation on the planet, and asks why major environmental organizations aren’t doing anything about it. Then we are joined by veteran lecturer and media analyst Jean Kilbourne to discuss her pioneering work looking at how advertising depicts women; how it creates and enforces gender roles and impossible beauty standards; and how it contributes to rape culture. You care about the planet, right?Of course you do. We're all concerned about global climate change, melting ice caps, fracking, the pollution of our oceans and all the many more issues we currently face that threaten Earth's long term sustainable health. As such, we do our best to be good planetary citizens. To keep our carbon footprint light, we eat local, recycle and compost. We opt for the bike and leave the hybrid car in the garage to reduce our fossil fuel dependance. We've swapped our lightbulbs for those new expensive ones that for whatever reason are supposed to be so much better. And here in California (and wherever we face drought) we limit our showers and curtail excess water usage. This is a very positive shift in consciousness. These are all great habits. So go ahead. It's OK to feel good about yourself. In fact, give yourself a pat on the back for being awesome. But what if I told you that all of our individual good citizenship efforts are just the tiniest drop in the bucket when compared to the massively deleterious impact of just one particular industry most of us quite simply and unconsciously support on a daily basis every day of our lives?Whether we are talking about global climate change, the blindingly rapid destruction of our rain forests, over consumption of water, species extinction, the depletion and destruction of our soil, the pollution of our rivers, lakes and oceans or the obliteration of natural wildlife habitats, you might be surprised to discover the very inconvenient and uncomfortable truth that there is one industry single-handedly responsible for destroying and undermining the health and sustainability of our planet far more than any other. The elephant in the room – animal agriculture. It is indisputable that our global industrialized system of factory livestock harvesting is unsustainable. It's killing us and it's killing the planet. We must embrace this reality and work collectively to create new sustainable systems to feed the 7 billion people that walk the Earth. Because the point of no return is quickly upon us. We're in the red. If we don't promptly redirect, it truly will be too late. When it comes to conservation and ecological responsibility, the dialog generally focuses on fossil fuels. A big issue, of course; and worthy of our attention. But here's a truth that all too often gets quietly swept under the rug: the deleterious environmental impacts of animal agriculture dwarf the impacts of fossil fuel demand in every single category across the board. So why aren't we talking about it?This is the question explored by Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret — an incredibly sobering and powerful upcoming documentary that takes a hard, unflinching look at just why the issue of animal agriculture and its incomprehensibly negative impact fails to get the airtime it deserves in the global environmentalism conversation. Imagine An Inconvenient Truth meets Blackfish and you get the picture.Today on the podcast I am so excited to have the filmmakers here to tell us all about what is really going on — Keegan Kuhn and Kip Andersen. We truly are all connected on this small blue planet. And as such, no discussion about individual health in the micro is complete without conversation about global health in the macro. We have a collective responsibility to remove the blinders of denial, take the red pill from the Matrix, understand what is truly at play and marshall our planetary citizenship to catalyze the change this planet, our children and all its inhabitants deserve — before it's too late.I sincerely hope this conversation challenges you and gives you something to really ponder. And I encourage all of you to go out and see this film when i... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
COWSPIRACY: The Sustainability Secret, is a groundbreaking feature length environmental documentary, following an intrepid filmmaker as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today and investigates why the world's leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. Kip and Keegan have been working tirelessly on this film for more than a year, and they are almost done!* Kip and Keegan have met major challenges virtually every step of the way because of how controversial this subject is and the secrecy surrounding it, yet we have overcome each hurdle. Kip and Keegan have created this film all on they own, with no support from grants, sponsors, funders, or financial backers. They have put in countless hours researching, investigating, planning, filming, and editing to get to where they are, and spent tens of thousands of dollars of their own money to produce it, but without your help they can only go so far. Now Kip and Keegan need your help in getting the film and its message to the world. Join them in this campaign and you will be supporting the absolute most important part of this film: getting it seen by the world. www.cowspiracy.com This shocking yet humorous documentary will be as eye-opening as "Blackfish" and as inspiring as "An Inconvenient Truth" .
