Kate Flynn, Millennial, is The Crisis Coach with a PhD in Developmental Psychology. After navigating her own life-altering crisis, Kate combined her academic expertise, entrepreneurial success, and personal resilience to create a unique coaching practice. She specializes in helping high-achieving leaders turn their most challenging moments into opportunities for growth and transformation. Topics Covered:     Post Traumatic Growth        Defining Crisis and Trauma·         The Body Keeps the Score    Trauma statistics & symptoms        EMDR benefits     IFS (Internal Family System)      Healing & different options   3 Episode Takeaways 1. Post Traumatic Growth is an individual's ability to grow and transform following major struggles but continue to grow and transform – “what doesn't kill you can make you stronger” with a properly set table. Resilience is one's ability to bounce back to baseline after something challenging happens. 2. Crisis is the external experience and there are two types: with a “C” easily identifiable and requires immediate action, and those with a “c” that are slow burning, less identifiable, and can sometimes trigger bigger feelings. Trauma is our internal experience and lives in our bodies - they can cause crisis situations or over-react to situations. Crisis and trauma can be intertwined. 3. Based on the statistics from the book The Body Keeps The Score there are many of us walking around with unresolved trauma and may not know it. EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is one powerful way to “unearth” what's going on in our bodies to help identify the triggers to unearth traumas to work through the experiences to get closure. Cameron was fun-loving, intelligent, compassionate, athletic, and talented who made his mom, Denise, very proud. After taking a counterfeit pill, he overdosed and lost his life when he was 23, even though his friends administered Narcan. Denise is on a mission to tell others that Narcan alone is not enough—911 must also be called. She reached out to Scott Silverman, a crisis coach, family navigator, and CEO of Confidential Recovery, an outpatient addiction program in San Diego, California. He is the author of the books “The Opioid Epidemic” and “Tell Me NO. I Dare You!” Together, Denise and Scott want to sound the alarm that the widespread distribution of Narcan is giving people a false sense of security and that 911 must also be called. Addiction can be viewed as a dirty word and something that is associated with shame.  However, it is a legitimate problem that many of us will have to confront with our kids, family members, friends or colleagues.  Scott Silverman knows about this all too well.  A once functioning substance abuser, he found himself in his early 30's standing on a ledge of a hotel wanting to end his life.  He got help, has been in recovery ever since and has dedicated his life to helping individuals and families find their own path to recovery.  In this interview, Scott tells his story and also paints a dramatic picture of the growing problem of addition-- especially coming off the pandemic.  From screen time to substance abuse, he shares what he knows and what to be aware of-- especially with teens and young adult age groups, who are exposed to more dangers then once existed.  Being surrounded by multiple screens can be impossible to migrate away from.  Easy access counterfeit medications, such as dark web/street purchased  Xanax or Adderall, can be laced with chemicals that can cause accidental overdoses.  Skittle parties and dangerous games are now in the mix.  While this discussion is somewhat grave, Scott also provides some levity and hope along the way, with natural charisma, sarcasm and wit that you will find disarming and engaging.

Scott's Story I empower individuals and families to move forward past the crisis and onto the road of recovery. As founder of Second Chance, I worked to break the cycle of substance abuse, unemployment, poverty, and homelessness for 25,000 at-risk teens and adults going through the incarceration system. Today, I lead the team at Confidential Recovery, an intensive outpatient substance abuse recovery program. But that’s not why you want to work with me. You want to work with me because I have been there. I’ve been through the fire and come out on the other side. Thirty years ago I was on the edge. Struggling from addiction, considering suicide, and feeling like things were unraveling. I was at rock bottom. The day after trying to kill myself, I flew home and immediately entered treatment. Grief happens when we experience a sense of loss, beyond just death: loss of health, relationship, normality, freedom, status, position, job, power, basically anything that you have, you can lose. When you choose to transform yourself, you will go through a grieving phase, for whatever it is you choose to part ways with, including your old self. We, Go-getters, are driven individuals who really wish to make a positive dent in the world and also in our lives. Yet, grief is a topic that is often a blind spot for us. “I don't have time to grief”; “I must be strong for my family”; “Suck it up and move on”; “Feeling takes so much energy and time”; “I hate crying”; “I can't be sad when I am still here”; are just some self-talk we have when facing grief. All of you reading this deserve to have the life that you desire and to grow in the way that you wish. For that, get to know grief and integrate that into your life. It will un-stuck you, your life and your loved ones. This episode is my conversation with Karin Hagelin on what grief is, how this shows up in your life, what the costs are when you're not facing it, how to do it and how to support others in grief. Today's guest entrepreneur reviewing the words of Steve Jobs, on the Join Up Dots free business podcast, is a lady who has gradually built her way to where she is today. She quite simply has been through the lifecoach school of hardknocks and now through her top ranked podcast Coming Out Of The Fire she is showing others how to overcome lifes issues. As her professional bio states “I am known in pop culture as America's crisis Coach. I come alongside celebrities, professional athletes, corporations and other high-achievers to manage their crisis situations, save their reputations and minimize damage to themselves and their families.” Which is quite a dramatic statement to make. But what has lead to her to want to build a career, and one that is hugely successful around dealing with other peoples heartaches, and personal distress. What made her want to step boldly into a world of crisis management and create a lifestyle of freedom and success. Well reviewing her career, you can see clearly the dots that have lead her to this point starting with a ten year stint as a Senior Case Manager at Tehama County Mental Health in California. Before undertaking the role of Executive Director responsible for a 24 bed, licensed residential facility for the mentally ill. But to my point of view, and we will discuss this on the show the true signpost showing her the way to her current position was as a Court Investigator researching petitions for conservatorship or guardianship to prevent abuse, neglect or fraud. Combining the personal issues that are encountered by mental health, with the day to day stuff that life throws at people, it is obvious that one word is formed: Crisis. So does she see her career dissection in the same way as I do, or does she feel that other elements have lead her to where she is today? And how does she remain bright and breezy at the end of the day after dealing with the kind of issues that her clients are bringing to her? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only entrepreneur herself Faydra Koenig. Her 1st husband was a Marine and has mental illness and couldn't function as a parent/husband 2nd marriage ended after 10 years when her husband had an affair with a close friend That veer, set back, helped learn about her own dysfunction stemming from childhood abuse After healing her past, she was able to be a better version of herself She had to look at what she was bringing to the relationship table, she made a lot of changes. Changes included, getting a Master's Degree, loads of reading, and really getting honest with herself about what works and what doesn't. When she started dated again, the new guy had some pretty public legal issues on Google The government charged her new man with white collar crime, the lawyers said he was fine.
