It's a sticky start to the episode as the guys have nothing to talk about. So they have a try at anything they can think of - from playing Pictionary and checking the charts, to reading out dodgy limericks and reminding themselves of the 90's TV show Win Lose Or Draw. Then talk turns to celebrities they've met earlier in life, like Natalie Imbruglia and Daley Thompson. Which sparks off a whole lot of reminiscing about shitty old jobs. The SPOTY award is the main prize of an annual ceremony organised by the BBC. It was created in 1954 by Paul Fox, who was the editor of a sports magazine show called Sportsview. The idea was to honour the sportsperson who had achieved the most that year, as voted by the public. The first winner was Christopher Chataway, a runner who beat Roger Bannister, the first man to run a mile in under four minutes. Since then, the award has become one of the most prestigious and popular awards in British sport. It has been won by legends such as Bobby Moore, Daley Thompson, Steve Redgrave, Kelly Holmes and Andy Murray. The award is open to any sportsperson who is British or who plays a significant amount of their sport in the UK. The winner is chosen from a shortlist of 10 nominees, selected by an expert panel, and announced live on TV in December. Who won for 2023? Why was this person chosen? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: What are the pros and cons of homeownership in the UK? Can I Pod With Madness - Kerrang, Metal Hammer and rock in the 1980s
Can I Pod With Madness episode 11 Metal Hammer Vol 3, No 17, (August 27, 1988) again - Special Ed This episode, we take a deep dive into everyone's favourite zombie cyborg murderer, mental patient and part time Egyptian deity, Eddie, off of the Iron Maiden album covers. Where did he come from? What's his story? How long does he spend every morning doing his hair? We wonder what other musical mascots are out there - this Metal Hammer article seems to think there's millions but only manages to suggest one. We start off with the article but quickly just veer off into watching videos and getting increasingly frustrated with Google image search. Also, Bowling For Soup, Stargate, potential confusion between Daley Thompson's Decathlon and Hypersports, and more Chris De Burgh talk than is strictly necessary on an Iron Maiden podcast. "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Ladies n' Genminminminmin (er, min...) absolutely thrilled & delighted to welcome UK Athletics Legend & Champion Roger Black MBE to the Good Listening To Show, for a classic bit of comedy & synergy! Allow me to explain! Literally 2 days after I had had the idea of "passing the Golden Baton" within my podcast structure, I had Roger Black in my Clearing, where I could award him AT LAST with Olympic Gold, having only managed to win Silver the 1st time in the 4x100 M Relay race, overtaken as he was, back in the day, by the Usain Bolt of his day, USA Olympic Legend Michael Jordan! So here to receive his Golden Baton - at last - is Roger Black MBE!More about Roger Black:Roger Black's athletic career almost never got started - twice! The first occasion was a medical check aged 11, at school, that revealed a potentially dangerous heart condition - a leaky valve. Even though there were no previous symptoms, the powers that be took him off all games immediately. The next occasion came with his A level results. Roger needed three Bs to secure his place at university. What he got was an A in biology, a B in chemistry and a D in maths. Without ever realising it at the time, that D delayed him ever starting his journey to become a doctor, yet created the opportunity to explore another path completely - as a potentially world-class athlete. The doctors were now happy to let him do this, if that was what he wanted. It was! He ran competitively for his county and when he went into serious training, he was competing internationally within two months. Roger started running with Chris Akabusi and he believes his colleague's speed helped him to run faster. This is a life lesson for Roger: if you want to improve your personal performance, surround yourself with the best possible people in that field so that you have to raise your game in order to keep up with them. As they say of racehorses, any horse looks fast running past bushes! In Roger's trophy cabinet you will find gold medals for Europe and the World and a Silver medal in the Olympics on the last possible occasion for him for it. No mean achievement for a lad with a leaky heart valve! Other achievements include winning Celebrity Master Mind and acquiring Daley Thompson as a fan of his guitar playing! Music and nature mean a lot to Roger Black as he moves purposefully towards the end of his sixth decade. Moving is a key issue as we get older, says Roger. “If you're in the Olympics, the date of the final is always in sharp focus. But if you're no longer in a competitive situation, you need to redefine your Why?” You need to focus on what you can control and make the most of every day. Exercise is freely available to everyone. Its benefits are beyond question. “Give it a go!” That is the advice from this exceptional human being, motivator, music lover, speaker, husband and father. Solid gold here. This week we dig into the archives from April 2017, when John sat down with world record holder and 2x Olympic Gold Medalist Ashton Eaton for some timeless advice for athletes of all sports and ages. Ashton Eaton is a retired American decathlete and two-time Olympic champion, who holds the world record in both the decathlon and indoor heptathlon events. Ashton competed for the University of Oregon, where he was a five-time NCAA champion, and won The Bowerman award in 2010. In 2011, he won the first international medal of his career, a silver, in the decathlon at the 2011 World Championships. The following year, Eaton broke his own world record in the heptathlon at the 2012 World Indoor Championships, and then broke the world record in the decathlon at the Olympic Trials. After setting the world record, Eaton won the gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He successfully defended his Olympic title in Rio 2016 by winning the decathlon gold medal and tying the Olympic record. Eaton is only the third Olympian (Bob Mathias of the US and Britain's Daley Thompson being the other two.) to achieve back-to-back gold medals in the decathlon. Brian Jacks was a household in the UK in the 1980s. The pinnacle of the judo player's sporting success came when he won a bronze medal at the Munich Olympics in 1972. But a few years later he would become much more famous as the UK and European champion in Superstars, a popular television programme that saw the best athletes of the day compete in events outside their niche. The show grew throughout the world to become perhaps the first modern example of how sporting heroes could cross into mainstream media, with all its financial benefits, through light entertainment television. Now living in Thailand, Jacks talks about his motivations, how he leveraged his Superstars fame, his rivalry with Daley Thompson and why he'd love to be a grappling coach in UFCPodcast partner: Sports Tech Match - Simplifying Sports Tech Procurement TOPICSWas his mental strength the key to his success, not his physical strengthThe importance of a challenge Making sure you have the grit to make his career ‘gambles' pay-off Why Brian believes Team GB judo is ‘soft'“You have to see what failure is to see what achievement is”Getting on to SuperstarsHow he monetised his stardom Did you he enjoy the fame? His approach to Superstars - breaking down the problem? How do you find his ability to rise to a challenge?Would he have fancied turning to UFC? As your genial Broken Oars team continue on their quest to bring the worlds of water and indoor rowing into closer harmony, we bring you a fantastic and illuminating chat with one of the UK's top indoor rowers. Rod Chin is, as the title suggests, a man of many records. A legend in the indoor rowing community, we discuss his long journey through sport from a fast lad out on the track competing against the likes of Daley Thompson through his years and time as a rugby player until the fateful day he and his wife, herself a fantastic indoor rower in her own right, spied two rowing machines in the corner of their local gym ... Die cast, Rod's competitive nature found its natural home in that famous piece of rowing equipment. While the old adage runs true - the Concept 2 is always waiting and always wins - Rod has struck a blow for mankind in systematically chasing down all of the records that have been set on the instrument of torture we all know and love. This isn't just about indoor rowing, however. Rod's sporting trajectory and approach to training, setting targets, and competing is one that resonated with us as water rowers. From discussing his early days on the track to finding and working with a dedicated coach to maximise what he can achieve in the sport, it's a chat that will be illuminating, insightful and helpful to anyone with the desire to make the best out of themselves. And it's out in time for the weekend? Get some! Bow Four? Winter training is coming up. This podcast is your future between now and December. Stern Four? Don't smirk. You're doing it too.
Our Great Coach on this episode is Frank Dick. Frank Dick is the current President of the European Athletics Coaches Association. From 1970 until 1979 he was Scottish National Athletics Coach. Then in 1979 he was appointed as the British Athletics Federation's Director of Coaching. In this position Frank led the British Athletics team into its "golden era" with Olympic gold medalists such as Daley Thompson, Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe. And ultimately victory in the European Cup in 1989. His contribution to sport and coaching was recognized with the awarding of an OBE in 1989 and an induction to the UK Coaches Hall of Fame in 1999. He has also coached athletes from other sports such as F1 driver Gerhard Berger, Ice Skater Katarina Witt, Tennis player Boris Becker and Golfer Justin Rose. Amongst the many other successes on his impressive resume are a Fulbright Scholarship in 1965, the publication of 4 books, stints as chair of the British Association of National Coaches, and British Institute of Sports Coaches , the appointment as High Performance Director for the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, and strategic planning consultant for the England Rugby Leadership Team under Eddie Jones. Frank is a master coach, and a fabulous story teller and some of the key parts of this interview for me were His view that the great coaches have curiosity and try to look at the world differently to learn new things. They are also challenging and do this through asking good questions. His thoughts on learning faster than the competition, and holding your self to the same expectations around learning that you have for your athletes. And that Teams are selected for their diversity, and from that you must create harmony and so your job as a coach is often as the conductor of the orchestra. This was a great conversation, I left feeling inspired and educated. And I hope you enjoy it as much as Jim and I did. How to Overcome Setbacks and Win in Life with Greg Searle Can you imagine what it takes to win the Olympics, and how it feels to accomplish such a feat? For one gold medalist, it wasn't that different from how he felt when he won other small races. However, it taught him life-long lessons that have shaped who he is today. Joining us for this episode is Greg Searle, who won a gold medal in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Greg talks about his career and family life and shows how he stays humble and down-to-earth despite having achieved massive success. He also shares the secrets behind how we can overcome our setbacks to win in life. To know how you too can feel happy and satisfied with your own life and accomplishments, tune in to this episode! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: How to get motivated from knowing where you started. How changing your mindset can lead you to be satisfied with what you have. Find out Greg's top secret to success. Resources Book Greg and hear his story in person through his website. Episode Highlights [2:41] Greg's Rowing Career and His Life's Proudest Moments Greg's proudest moment in his life is his rowing career. The highlight of his career is winning an Olympic gold medal in 1992. His school history teacher, who won a gold medal in 1984, inspired him to get into rowing. We often set goals, make sacrifices and put ourselves through pain to achieve them. But for Greg, it wasn't sacrificing; it was a choice, and he enjoyed the work involved in training. Winning the Olympics didn't feel different from crossing the line at other rowing competitions — it was just the next big challenge. [8:01] Never Forget Why You Started You need to understand your motivation. A lot of leaders in organizations forget why they started and what gives them personal validation. As leaders get more seniority, they go further and further away from doing the thing that they are good at. You must remind yourself why you've gotten where you are in the first place. To remember that, you could connect to people who are still out there doing the jobs they used to do. [9:51] If Not Now, When? Garry Herbert asked Greg and his brother ‘If not now, when?' when they were two lengths behind at the Olympics. Hearing those words was enough to take them forward, from being behind, to leading the race by a few feet. Listen to the full episode to learn about Greg's life after winning a gold medal in the Olympics! He was aware of the difference it makes to be successful and to fail. It's about coming to terms with living with that and realize that winning doesn't dictate who you are. He looks up to people who have not won gold medals but are still incredible team players. [19:04] Watching His Family Greg and his wife put importance on creating codes of conduct and recognizing the significant things. His second highlight is having the opportunity to be around his family and seeing them mature into the people they are. He's aware of the pressure on his children given what he's achieved, but he doesn't want to put that on them. What he wants is for them to celebrate the small successes they have. Being happy with the effort you put in is what's important — not whether you win or lose. He doesn't place much weight on what they learn in university. It's about how they're around other people, making friends in organizations, working hard, and being helpful. [25:52] Having a Good Mindset The third thing Greg is most proud of is his mindset in life, which allows him to choose how to see situations. He's proud of his ability to be happy with what he has and not be disappointed in what he doesn't. He attributes his mindset to how his hardworking parents brought him up. Growing up, he remembers being grateful for the material things they gave him. Set tiny goals — you'll hit them because they're so small — to have something you can feel good about. Then, challenge yourself to do the same thing again. Occasionally, you'd want to stop and admire the view, which is the time you're focused on what's in front of you. And sometimes, you have to make giant leaps and climb steeper steps. Having confidence allows you to have a better chance of accomplishing things and getting back up. Listen to the full podcast to know how Greg applied his mindset in teaching his children how to drive! [35:48] How Greg Deals with the Virtual Word Currently, Greg coaches people and shares his story with larger audiences. Working in this virtual world, you should engage with a lot of people in a manageable way. Be adaptable to change to be able to do your best in this new situation. Choose to find the best way to work in the environment we've got. [38:14] Greg's Three Favourite Olympic Moments First is Daley Thompson winning and whistling to the national anthem. Second is his friend being there to celebrate despite not having been on the boat. The third is meeting Kate Middleton. [40:10] Greg's Secret to Success It's choosing what to think or choosing to measure what you think success is. The only thing in your power is the view you take of yourself and the things that have happened to you. It's in our gift to choose how we see the situations we're in. 5 Powerful Quotes [6:42] ‘I think as a sportsperson, you have to just keep looking for the next challenge, and you just keep stepping up and stepping up'. [9:55] ‘If not now, when? If not you, who'? [22:13] ‘I want to help my kids to understand that whether they win or don't win, whether they pass or fail, shouldn't dictate whether they're going to be happy or not. They should be happy with the effort they put in; they should be happy with challenging themselves and dealing with setbacks'. [30:43] ‘Small successes give you more confidence and build on each other'. [34:41] ‘Actually, the best coaches aren't necessarily experts — they create a safe environment, they ask the questions, they find other resources when they need them'. About Greg Greg Searle is an Olympic gold medalist and leadership coach. He won gold in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and bronze in the 2012 London games. Welcome to The Diad Presents! Happy New Year! I totally forgot to mention that on the show... Also, I had some bad info while I was putting together the episode. What I thought was "Unused Track 3" is actually called "After the Battle" and appears in game. I'm guessing it's a staff roll or credits track. The show can be downloaded here, or streamed here: I wanted to link to all the magazine scans I used, but I'm worried about legal repercussions of doing so. If you are so inclined, you can find them on your own! Kirsty Young's castaway is the Paralympian & broadcaster Ade Adepitan. Wheelchair basketball's his sport and this year he partnered Claire Balding anchoring the television coverage of the 2012 London Paralympics. When he's not stuck in a studio explaining the intricacies of Goalball he's reporting from the rainforests of Nicaragua or the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Adversity seems to suit him - he even survived turning up for his first day at school aged 7 in a pink checked suit and bow tie. Inspired by his boyhood heroes Seb Coe and Daley Thompson, who he first saw on TV competing in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, sport became his passion. He says "I think I've done more things with my disability than most able-bodied people would ever dream of doing".Producer: Cathy Drysdale.
