This weekend, we're back in the Labyrinth with another dive into the pop culture landscape. Tim has returned from his Phish pilgrimage to Bethel, New York, with some stories and notes to share. We also break down the much-talked-about X interview between Trump and Musk. Plus, the new Borderlands movie is tanking at the box office, so we decided to take a look at Hollywood's biggest movie bombs and share our own favorite stinkers. Steph's got all the pop culture news this week, covering everything from the Olympic sensation “Napoleon Vegemite” in the breakdancing competition to the buzz surrounding the Alien: Romulus film opening this weekend. We're talking Trump getting shade from Celine Dion and unions, why Halle Berry is still a total badass, and why nobody needs an Anthony Bourdain biopic. Meanwhile, Coke's got a new Oreo with pop rocks, and a giant meth bust disguised as a celery shipment has us asking: coincidence? And don't miss Casey's Time Machine as we journey back to 1987. Of course, we're bringing back the fan-favorite YouTube Comments segment, where we respond to your feedback with our signature blend of wit and wisdom. And don't miss "Views or Snooze?"—your guide to what's worth watching and what's better left unwatched. Hit that subscribe button, give us a thumbs-up, and tune in on Spotify for our audio content. MY EFFING CAREER— When you're born in a town called Media, your career path is pretty much preordained. It has to be, right? And when you end up leading the design teams at blue-chip magazine brands at Condé Nast, Hearst, and Time Inc., the prophecy is then fully realized. (Yes, I just watched Dune). But the journey in between is not as cushy as you might imagine. Since the age of 10, with his mother's admonition—“you need to have a job”—ringing in his ears, designer John Korpics has found work doing all of the following: he's bent sheetwork into duct metal, cleaned windows at factories, he was a fitness instructor, he had a paper route. He worked his way through college in food service—cleaning chicken, wiping counters, serving meals. When you hear the title creative director, you'd be forgiven if your mind painted a picture. You know the type—the thoroughbred who studied at Parsons or SVA, apprenticed under Tibor Kalman or Roger Black, who gets included on some “30 Under 30” list. That's not John Korpics. He's worked hard to get where he's gotten. Korpics will tell you that. He told me that:“I always felt like I was the Pete Rose of magazine designers. I hustle, I work hard, I crank stuff out. Occasionally I get one and I hit one out of the park, but there are people in this industry that I think are truly giants. And I've never quite thought of the work I did in that league, but I am always inspired by them.”And then, one day, he was 24 and hired to art direct his first magazine. And then another. And another. And like many of us, some of his jobs haven't worked out. And when that happens, what does Korpics do? He gets himself another job. Like the time he became a Manhattan bike messenger after one particularly messy ending.“I delivered mops to the 79th Street Boat Basin. I delivered products to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. I delivered clothes from a studio to Vogue. I delivered a lot of lunches. And I actually really enjoyed it. Although I will say it's not possible to make a living doing that. On my best day ever, I think I made about $90.”It takes a special person to survive in the magazine business. Forty years in, Korpics is still at it. He's focused on the big picture now—brands, systems, pixels—at Harvard Business Review, the 102-year-old publishing wing of the 116-year-old Harvard Business School. Yes, mom, he's still got a job.Let's meet John.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Mountain Gazette and Commercial Type Print Is Dead (Long Live Print!) is a production of Magazeum & MO.D ©2021–2024

Roger Black draws from origins and evolution of type, type trend drivers, and his own career in this week's episode with our own Charles Nix. Combining various lenses that allow creatives to see between and behind the lines of type, the two designers inspect the nitty gritty of typographic design — from machinery to wider influences of cultural shifts — and how to look backwards in order to see forward and achieve timeless and iconic type design. Roger Black is a renowned American designer known for his extensive and influential portfolio, from editorial designs for Rolling Stone, New York Times Magazine, and Newsweek to his digital work for Barnes & Noble, the Senate, and more.
Roger Black is the former athlete who represented Great Britain at the highest level, both as an individual 400m runner and as a member of the 4x400m relay team. He won 15 major Championship medals including World, European and Commonwealth Gold medals and Silver and Bronze Olympic medals. Roger was also British Men's Team Captain. His greatest achievement, he says, was winning the Olympic 400m silver medal in 1996 in Atlanta, beaten by the great Michael Johnson. Since his retirement from Athletics he has worked as a motivational speaker, talking to people all around the world about the many similarities between high performance in the worlds of sport and business. Roger was awarded an M.B.E. in 1992 .Roger Black is guest number 323 on My Time Capsule and chats to Michael Fenton Stevens about the five things he'd like to put in a time capsule; four he'd like to preserve and one he'd like to bury and never have to think about again .For everything Roger Black, visit - rogerblack.co.uk .Follow Roger Black on Twitter: @RogerBlack400 . David Berlow has been at the forefront of type design, publishing, and technology for 45 years. His impressive career began in 1978 drawing letterforms for the Haas, Mergenthaler, Linotype, and Stempel type foundries, before he went on to work at Apple, Bitstream, and later founded the Font Bureau with Roger Black. A self-described “loose cannon” and “boat rocker,” Berlow has been at the center of type innovation for decades, consulting for companies like Apple and Google, all whilst designing some of the world's most celebrated and recognizable fonts, including custom designs for iconic publishers such as The New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, Esquire Magazine and The Wall Street Journal and brands including Apple Computer Inc., Google Inc. and Microsoft Corporation. In this week's episode Tom Rickner, the Senior Director of the Studio at Monotype, sits down with Berlow. Fun fact: Berlow hired Rickner at the Font Bureau, kicking off his career as a type designer. You'll hear the two reminisce, talk shop, and explore Berlow's influences, predictions, and perspectives on mentorship and team building. "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Ladies n' Genminminminmin (er, min...) absolutely thrilled & delighted to welcome UK Athletics Legend & Champion Roger Black MBE to the Good Listening To Show, for a classic bit of comedy & synergy! Allow me to explain! Literally 2 days after I had had the idea of "passing the Golden Baton" within my podcast structure, I had Roger Black in my Clearing, where I could award him AT LAST with Olympic Gold, having only managed to win Silver the 1st time in the 4x100 M Relay race, overtaken as he was, back in the day, by the Usain Bolt of his day, USA Olympic Legend Michael Jordan! So here to receive his Golden Baton - at last - is Roger Black MBE!More about Roger Black:Roger Black's athletic career almost never got started - twice! The first occasion was a medical check aged 11, at school, that revealed a potentially dangerous heart condition - a leaky valve. Even though there were no previous symptoms, the powers that be took him off all games immediately. The next occasion came with his A level results. Roger needed three Bs to secure his place at university. What he got was an A in biology, a B in chemistry and a D in maths. Without ever realising it at the time, that D delayed him ever starting his journey to become a doctor, yet created the opportunity to explore another path completely - as a potentially world-class athlete. The doctors were now happy to let him do this, if that was what he wanted. It was! He ran competitively for his county and when he went into serious training, he was competing internationally within two months. Roger started running with Chris Akabusi and he believes his colleague's speed helped him to run faster. This is a life lesson for Roger: if you want to improve your personal performance, surround yourself with the best possible people in that field so that you have to raise your game in order to keep up with them. As they say of racehorses, any horse looks fast running past bushes! In Roger's trophy cabinet you will find gold medals for Europe and the World and a Silver medal in the Olympics on the last possible occasion for him for it. No mean achievement for a lad with a leaky heart valve! Other achievements include winning Celebrity Master Mind and acquiring Daley Thompson as a fan of his guitar playing! Music and nature mean a lot to Roger Black as he moves purposefully towards the end of his sixth decade. Moving is a key issue as we get older, says Roger. “If you're in the Olympics, the date of the final is always in sharp focus. But if you're no longer in a competitive situation, you need to redefine your Why?” You need to focus on what you can control and make the most of every day. Exercise is freely available to everyone. Its benefits are beyond question. “Give it a go!” That is the advice from this exceptional human being, motivator, music lover, speaker, husband and father. Solid gold here. “Life's not about how hard of a hit you can give... it's about how many you can take, and still keep moving forward.” - Sylvester Stallone, Rocky Balboa Winning feels absolutely amazing. You feel like you are on top of the world. You feel invincible, like a proper superhero. But winning takes a lot of work. It takes a lot of courage. It takes a lot of guts and determination. That's what we need to talk about. What does it mean to really win? How do we win in this life? Do you feel like you are losing? Why? In this episode, listen as I talk about what it means to be a true winner and how failure is not synonymous with losing. Highlights: ✅ Doubt, fear and settling are the reasons why people lose. ✅ If you are winning by outperforming other people, then it's not the healthiest way to win. ✅ Winning is not the absence of challenges and setbacks, it's the ability to bounce back and believe that you can win. Athletics in Tokyo is just hours away, and - if we thought we were excited before Roger Black joined us to discuss it all - we had another thought coming. One of Britain’s most famous athletes, Derek Redmond is a World & European relay champion, having broken the British 400m record twice. A key member of the relay squad that won gold at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo, he competed at the highest level for over a decade.Alongside Kriss Akabusi, John Regis and Roger Black he then stunned the sporting world as Britain triumphed over the favourites USA to win gold. Their run remains the second fastest 4x400m run in history. At the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, representing his country he became part of one of the most inspirational scenes in Olympic history. In the 400m semi-final Derek went into the race amongst the favourites but as he passed the 250m mark he tore his hamstring. Determined to finish the race he hobbled to the finish line with the help of his father as a 65,000-strong crowd cheered him on. This incident has since been voted one of the Olympics’ most inspirational moments by US network NBC and even referenced by Barack Obama in a presidential speech. #InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week on RunPod, Jenni is joined by former 400m sprinter, Roger Black. Although Roger has since retired, he still runs daily but now he gets to relax the pace, run for enjoyment and more importantly to maintain his health. Despite the fact he was so fast on the track, even picking up a silver at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, throughout he had an underlying heart issue. We discuss how he didn’t let that stop him becoming a world class athlete and what it was like to face the pressure racing against the legendary Michael Johnson. Roger also has great tips for newbies, so if you’re just started running this year, he’ll give you reason to keep going!! A fascinating listen from a man who was at the top of his game for many years and who now still prioritises the opportunity to run because he knows the benefits make it so incredibly worthwhile.

In this episode we’re going to be talking to Jamie Baulch Entrepreneur and Olympian.Jamie’s talent for running was spotted by his Headmaster, Eric Atkins, on sports day at Henllys Junior School in Newport. After beating everyone so convincingly on that memorable sports day, Mr Atkins encouraged Jamie to join Newport Harriers, in South Wales. After the introduction to athletics, when Jamie was only 10 years old he never looked back. Jamie developed into one of the big personalities of the British athletics team, recognised by his peroxide dreadlocks for many years, which led to a promotional campaign with Vidal Sassoon. Jamie made his debut for the GB & NI team at a Junior International in Salamanca, Spain, in 1991. He burst onto the international scene, winning the 200m and breaking the Welsh record in that race. In his first year competing over 400m, Jamie was selected for the 1996 Olympic Games and won Silver as part of the 4x400m quartet. Jamie became World Indoor Champion in 1999 and still holds the British Indoor record over 400m set in 1997. Jamie won 13 medals at Olympic Games, World and European Championships and Commonwealth Games. Jamie helped campaign for his team’s World Championship Gold medals from 1997 to be presented to the 4x400m quartet including Iwan Thomas, Roger Black and Mark Richardson after a 13 year wait. This followed the disqualification of the USA team after Antonio Pettigrew admitted doping in 2007. Jamie continues to be a popular and respected voice in the world of athletics. Jamie is also an ambassador for Barnardos and Cancer Research Wales as part of his commitment to supporting charities. here is the link to Jamie's website that takes you to the documentaries mention in the podcasthttp://www.jamiebaulch.com/https://www.instagram.com/jamiebaulch/https://twitter.com/jamiebaulch

This week, Editor & Publisher Magazine's official weekly podcast, “E&P Reports,” mixes things up with two very different subject interviews—one on news design, the other on narrative news podcasting—and both offering tips on excellence in news publishing. First up is legendary newspaper and magazine designer Roger Black, who talks about design as a competitve weapon. Fun fact: Black designed the current logo for Editor & Publisher about 20 years ago! After Black, stick around for a behind-the-scenes conversation that Editor & Publisher editor-in-chief Nu Yang conducted with Davin Coburn, executive producer of audio for McClatchy Newspapers. Coburn worked with Charlotte Observer reporter Scott Fowler on “Carruth,” a narrative podcast about former NFL star Rae Carruth, his girlfriend, Cherica Adams—who was shot four times by a hitman—and their unborn son, Chancellor Lee. The narrative podcast they produced won this year’s EPPY Award for “Best Podcast” with more than 1 million unique visitors. It can be argued that the fitness industry only goes skin deep. That is, the industry only focuses on body image and the aesthetics of staying physically fit and healthy. The mental side of personal fitness is largely ignored. This can lead to trainers feeling like they are unable to relate to clients properly. This can also cause problems for people in their personal lives. How can trainers improve the way they think about themselves and the way they view fitness? “The best way to understand the human condition is to speak to people” – Pete Cohen About Pete Cohen Pete Cohen is one of the world’s leading keynote speakers on the subject of psychology. He has worked with high-profile clients, including the Arsenal football team during the time that they won the Premier League title whilst going unbeaten as “The Invincibles”, snooker player Ronnie O’Sullivan and runner Roger Black. He has also worked closely with BUPA in delivering training to fitness coaches about how they can deliver more effective weight-loss programmes. Currently, he is running the Fitness Mindset Academy. This programme aims to equip trainers will the mental tools they need to get the best results with their clients. Pete believes that the current focus on physicality and outward appearance in the fitness industry could actually be harming personal trainers’ chances of feeling fulfilled in themselves and delivering the best service they can to their clients. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Pete talks about his success with previous clients, including the Arsenal football team How the fitness industry has an over-reliance on physical results and neglects the mental strategies that trainers need to have a balanced outlook on fitness How personal trainers can focus on their mindset in order to deliver a better service to their clients How personal and financial freedom can be achieved by using these mind hacks “The majority of people in our industry, they don’t really go anywhere and many of them fall by the wayside and maybe a lot of that has to do with the simple fact that they don’t have a strong vision of where they are going” The PT COREntreprenur Podcast is a project from Core Collective. Roger also worked with The Regular Guys as his character Yucko the Clown -- who would go on to be a featured on Howard Stern. In 2012 they created Brickleberry which was originally pitched to Fox and Adult Swim but was picked up by Comedy Central where, executive producer and the voice of not-so-cuddly bear Malloy, Daniel Tosh’s Tosh.0 was just gaining traction. The show ended after three hilariously irreverent seasons but Waco and Roger have gone on to create a new program set to premiere on August 31st on Netflix called Paradise PD -- featuring some Radio Labyrinth favorite voice actors such as Dana Snyder, Tom Kenney and Kyle Kinane. David Berlow entered the type industry in 1978 as a designer for the respected Mergenthaler, Linotype, Stempel, and Haas type foundries. He joined the newly formed digital type supplier Bitstream in 1982 and in 1989 founded The Font Bureau, with Roger Black. David gives us an insight in his working methods. How does he start making a new typeface? Mostly it’s listening from his part and figuring out what it is people are actually saying. We also talk about things he learned along the way, like being a good manager. We wonder how often he rejects new proposals or submissions for typefaces?
