In this episode, Greg Jenner is joined in nineteenth-century England by Dr Michael Taylor and comedian Sara Pascoe to learn all about pioneering palaeontologist Mary Anning.Born to a cabinet-maker father who collected and sold fossils to make extra money, Anning went fossil hunting from a young age. Over the course of her life, she discovered complete ichthyosaur, plesiosaur and pterosaur skeletons, and made great contributions to the emerging discipline of palaeontology. But she was also shut out by the largely male scientific establishment. This episode charts her extraordinary life story, exploring the significance of her discoveries against the background of nineteenth-century debates about religion and science and controversies around the age of the earth. This is a radio edit of the original podcast episode. fWotD Episode 2573: Mary Anning Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Tuesday, 21 May 2024 is Mary Anning.Mary Anning (21 May 1799 – 9 March 1847) was an English fossil collector, dealer, and palaeontologist who became known around the world for the discoveries she made in Jurassic marine fossil beds in the cliffs along the English Channel at Lyme Regis in the county of Dorset in Southwest England. Anning's findings contributed to changes in scientific thinking about prehistoric life and the history of the Earth.Anning searched for fossils in the area's Blue Lias and Charmouth Mudstone cliffs, particularly during the winter months when landslides exposed new fossils that had to be collected quickly before they were lost to the sea. Her discoveries included the first correctly identified ichthyosaur skeleton when she was twelve years old; the first two nearly complete plesiosaur skeletons; the first pterosaur skeleton located outside Germany; and fish fossils. Her observations played a key role in the discovery that coprolites, known as bezoar stones at the time, were fossilised faeces, and she also discovered that belemnite fossils contained fossilised ink sacs like those of modern cephalopods.Anning struggled financially for much of her life. As a woman, she was not eligible to join the Geological Society of London, and did not always receive full credit for her scientific contributions. However, her friend, geologist Henry De la Beche, who painted Duria Antiquior, the first widely circulated pictorial representation of a scene from prehistoric life derived from fossil reconstructions, based it largely on fossils Anning had found and sold prints of it for her benefit.Anning became well known in geological circles in Britain, Europe, and America, and was consulted on issues of anatomy as well as fossil collecting. The only scientific writing of hers published in her lifetime appeared in the Magazine of Natural History in 1839, an extract from a letter that Anning had written to the magazine's editor questioning one of its claims. After her death in 1847, Anning's unusual life story attracted increasing interest. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:32 UTC on Tuesday, 21 May 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Mary Anning on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Kimberly Neural.

An ancient fossil found by a girl and her father on a beach in England belongs to a creature that might have been among the largest animals ever on Earth. Researchers said in a recent study that the fossilized bone, called a surangular, was from a reptile called an ichthyosaur that lived in the sea. Based on its size, compared to the same bone in closely related ichthyosaurs, the researchers estimated that the creature was between 22 and 26 meters long. They named it Ichthyotitan severnensis. Ichthyotitan severnensis。That would make it possibly the largest known marine reptile. Its size would be close to the largest whales alive today. The blue whale, considered the largest animal ever to have lived, can reach about 30 meters in length. Marine reptiles lived in the world's oceans at the same time that dinosaurs lived on the land. Ichthyosaurs disappeared 90 million years ago. They came in several sizes. The creatures ate fish and other sea animals. Ichthyotitan, however, is known only from two jawbones. The jaw forms the lower part of the mouth. Ruby Reynolds and her father Justin Reynolds found one of the bones in 2020 at Blue Anchor in Somerset. The other bone is from a different Ichthyotitan individual found in 2016, along the Somerset coast at Lilstock. Dean Lomax was the lead writer of the study published recently in PLOS ONE. Lomax said, "It is quite remarkable to think that gigantic, blue whale-sized ichthyosaurs were swimming in the oceans around the time that dinosaurs were walking on land in what is now the UK (Britain) during the Triassic Period.”Dean Lomax 是最近在 PLOS ONE 上发表的这项研究的主要作者。 洛马克斯说:“在三叠纪时期,在现在的英国,恐龙在陆地上行走的时候,巨大的蓝鲸大小的鱼龙正在海洋中游泳,这是非常值得注意的。”The Triassic Period describes a time over 200 million years ago.三叠纪描述的是两亿多年前的一段时期。Ruby Reynolds was 11 at the time she and her father discovered the fossil surangular bone on the beach. Ruby continued to search the area and found a second piece - much larger than the first - partly buried in the ground. They then contacted Lomax, an ichthyosaur expert, and more parts of the bone were unearthed.鲁比·雷诺兹 (Ruby Reynolds) 和父亲在海滩上发现了角骨化石时,她才 11 岁。 鲁比继续搜寻该地区,发现了第二块——比第一块大得多——部分埋在地下。 随后他们联系了鱼龙专家洛马克斯,更多的骨头部分被挖掘出来。Ruby's part in the discovery has led to comparisons with Mary Anning. Anning was a 19th century British fossil hunter who, among other things, discovered ichthyosaur fossils when she was 12.鲁比在这一发现中所扮演的角色导致人们将其与玛丽·安宁进行比较。 安宁是一位 19 世纪的英国化石猎人,她在 12 岁时发现了鱼龙化石。"I think Mary Anning was an incredible paleontologist, and it's amazing to be compared to her," Ruby said.“我认为玛丽·安宁是一位令人难以置信的古生物学家,与她相比真是太棒了,”鲁比说。Justin Reynolds added, "It has been an amazing...and fun experience to work with these experts, and we are proud to be part of the team and co-authors of a scientific paper which names a new species and genus.” Fossil collector Paul de la Salle found the 2016 remains now identified as Ichthyotitan. The big marine reptile was a member of a family of giant ichthyosaurs called Shastasauridae. These creatures lived 13 million years later than other ichthyosaurs. They survived until a world-wide event caused many kinds of animals to disappear about 201 million years ago at the end of the Triassic Period. No other fossils from Ichthyotitan have been discovered. But the researchers have been able to guess at its appearance based on other members of its family, including Shonisaurus from British Columbia, Canada. Study co-writer Jimmy Waldron used the term humbled – meaning to be made to feel less important or proud – to describe the discoveries. Waldron said, "Discoveries like this create incredible moments where we become humbled at our size and place in the world.”沃尔德伦说:“这样的发现创造了令人难以置信的时刻,让我们对自己的规模和在世界上的地位感到谦卑。”
Der australische Kontrabassist Sam Anning ist wieder in seine Heimat zurückgekehrt und hat dort sein neues Album „Earthen“ herausgebracht. Dessen Klangzauber könne man sich kaum entziehen, schwärmt Musikkritiker Georg Waßmuth.

Credits: Written by Annabel Worth, Kirsten Huffer and Emma Pratt Read by Kirsten and Annabel Audio editing and soundscape by Emma This piece concerns Mary Anning's Icthyosaur in the Sedgwick museum. Once upon a time, 200 million years ago, dolphin-like marine reptiles, or ichthyosaurs, like this one roamed the Jurassic Sea. About 200 years ago, Mary Anning, mother of paleontology, found this ichthyosaur fossil along the craggy cliffs of England's southern coast. If fossils could talk, what would this ichthyosaur say? What could it tell us about the experiences of its collector, Mary Anning, who was widely excluded from scientific circles of her day? And what could it tell us about Adam Sedgwick, who purchased it—possibly with the money that he gained from the labour of enslaved people? What stories of power and memory, gender and colonialism, could this ichthyosaur bring to life?

. Elizabeth Essex is the award-winning author of critically acclaimed historical romance, including Reckless Brides and her new Highland Brides series. Her books have been nominated for numerous awards, including the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence, the Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award and Seal of Excellence Award, and RWA’s prestigious RITA Award. The Reckless Brides Series has also made Top-Ten lists from Romantic Times, The Romance Reviews and Affaire de Coeur Magazine, and Desert Isle Keeper status at All About Romance. Her fifth book, A BREATH OF SCANDAL, was awarded Best Historical in the Reader’s Crown 2013. When not rereading Jane Austen, mucking about in her garden, walking her beloved dogs, Ghillie and Brogue, or simply messing about with boats, Elizabeth can be always be found with her laptop, making up stories about heroes and heroines who live far more exciting lives than she. It wasn’t always so. Long before she ever set pen to paper, Elizabeth graduated from Hollins College with a BA in Classics and Art History, and then earned her MA in Nautical Archaeology from Texas A&M University. While she loved the life of an underwater archaeologist, she has found her true calling writing lush, lyrical historical romance full of passion, daring and adventure. Elizabeth lives in Texas with her husband, the indispensable Mr. Essex, and her active and exuberant family in an old house filled to the brim with books. Today, May 21, is the 221st anniversary of Mary Anning's birth. She is not a household name, by any means—though she is believed to be the inspiration behind the well-known tongue-twister “she sells sea shells by the sea shore”. However, it wasn't shells she was selling, but fossils of long extinct creatures of a bygone era. She was ‘the greatest fossilist the world ever knew'. Though, the sad truth is much of the world never knew, and still does not. 221 years after Mary Anning's birth, a young girl from the very town where Mary lived her entire life is fighting to rectify a historical injustice in recognizing Anning in bronze—a fitting honor for a woman who spent her life uncovering creatures lost to time. Towards the end, I butcher the pronunciation of Saiorse Ronan. We're all human, right? Don't make my mistake and learn how to say her name the right way in this video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kbv6_rpC7jw (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kbv6_rpC7jw) If you would like to support https://www.maryanningrocks.co.uk/ (Mary Anning Rocks), you can do so by visiting http://www.maryanningrocks.co.uk/ (http://www.maryanningrocks.co.uk). The Uncuckables' regular Thursday night live show was an ANZAC Day special featuring David Hiscox, Editor of XYZ, Matty Rose of Matty's Modern Life and Tim Wilms Editor in Chief of The Unshackled. Tim and David attended the Melbourne Dawn Service at the Shrine of Remembrance, while Matty slept in so we supplied him with a pillow. We agree that ANZAC Day is the last remaining day of national pride that the left hasn't managed to diminish. However we do name Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews as cuck of the week as during his address to the dawn service said that the Aboriginals still owned Australia. Matty plays a special leaked episode of Potatriots he got a hold of which shows Peter Grace reacting to watching The Uncuckables. We look at Bill Shorten's lies unravelling, getting his manboobs in knot. He claimed he was never against the Adani coal mine and told a worker he would cut his taxes when his policy is to increase them. We debate whether the Liberal Party is fighting back with their own lie about Bill Shorten introducing death taxes, we also assess the recent pop culture means put out by the Liberals. With the candidates for the federal election declared we assess the minor party field. We discuss the merits of some in the alt-right believing that Anning is not hardcore enough based on his candidate selection. We warn of the danger that the return of Clive Palmer poses and how it is furthering fracturing the right-wing vote in Australia. We finish with an update on Sri Lankan Islamic terrorist attack against Christians and how the left can't bring themselves to say that it was an attack on Christianity. Today, I will share the news about “egg throwing”. When I came to Australia the first time, I heard, every year, high school students throw an egg to an Asian from the car during the school's graduation holiday. Some people say it's true, some don't. I've never seen such an act on the street. It might be superstitious. But people throw the egg. Look back the history. It is known for “Bush dodging shoe”. After 9/11, U.S. president George W Bush was at the conference with Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki. The journalist Muntadhar Al Zaidi throw his both shoe to the president Bush. He answered in the interview by the Real News “I'm a man of peace, not a man of war, I was exposing the occupation with my pen, however, I didn't think my pen was reaching the world.” As a consequence of the act, that made people think why the young journalist risked his life to resist the government. Here is another case, so far my favorite politician Arnold Schwarzenegger, who got an egg on the shoulder while walking out to give a speech during his special-election run to replace Gray Davis as governor of California in 2003. His supporters touched him during walking. In a few seconds, he took off the jacket and stepped on the stage. After the speech, Arnie cracked a joke. “This guy owes me bacon now. Because there's no two ways about it. You can't just have eggs without bacon.” Love it, Arnie. He stated one more important point. “This is just all part of the free speech. It's great to see this people here screaming out. Imagine you are in some communist state or some dictatorship, you couldn't do that. This is why I love this country. Freedom of speech that's what creates the ultimate democracy. Back here in Australia, last month, the teenager interrupted a press conference by the independent Queensland senator Fraser Anning, who had blamed the terrorist attack on Muslim immigration, by cracking an egg on the politician's head. Then, Fraser Anning hit the boy's face, He was knocked down on the floor. Anning's supporter has been charged with assault for allegedly kicking the boy. In the Interview, he explained his act. “After that tragedy in Christchurch. The world should be supporting all those victims with giving them love and passion. The senator released a statement which was pretty much divisive hate speech, blaming the victims for the attack. And I was just flat-out disgusted.” Egg boy got many support world widely. Got NBA Player Ben Simon's basketball shoes. Lifetime of supply beer in Canada. Egg Boy founding made a big money for the victims of the Christchurch. If I had any chance to plank One Nation's senator, I would. Here is Fraser Anning's comment. “Real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place...Muslims may have been the victims today, usually, they are the perpetrator” This guy has a real issue. They don't want to leave their country. They were exiled by cause which Iraq war occurred. Think about it. But, the Australian government may have made some problem toward Muslim society. How about Manus Island? When Sharrouf's children are back? Yesterday, a young woman attempted throwing an egg on PM Scott Morison's head. But failed. She told to the reporter “[He]Desrved it” This incident reminds you the Egg Boy, but how could she throw the egg to Scott Morison? One lady was slipped on the floor at that time and Scott Morison helped her to stand and cheer her up. His policy might irritate some people but he is not a hateful person. If you want to throw the egg, think about the reason. Do you really need it? What would you say if you are asked? EggThrowing.mp3
This is TRT World’s Daily News Brief for Wednesday, April 3rd. *)Abdelaziz Bouteflika steps down as Algerian president Algeria's long-time president Abdelaziz Bouteflika has stepped down. He resigned on Tuesday with immediate effect. It came just hours after the head of the military called for him to go, for the second time in just over a week. However, it's unclear whether Bouteflika's ouster will quell weeks of opposition protests. Many Algerians want a fresh government, not just a new face of power. *)Venezuela’s Guaido stripped of immunity Venezuela’s Constituent Assembly has stripped opposition leader Juan Guaido of his immunity from prosecution. President Nicolas Maduro set up the Constituent Assembly after he lost control of the National Assembly. Guaido is head of the opposition-controlled National Assembly. *)Election body to ‘reassess’ votes in eight Istanbul districts Turkey’s election body is recounting votes in eight of Istanbul's 39 districts after Sunday's local elections. In the race for mayor of Turkey's biggest city, the CHP's Ekrem Imamoglu had a narrow lead over the AK Party’s Binali Yildirim ahead of the recount. Nationwide, the governing AK Party and its MHP coalition ally defeated the opposition alliance by about 52 to 38 percent. *)Australian senator censured over NZ terror attack comments Australia's Senate has censured a far-right lawmaker for his comments blaming immigration for the terrorist attack on two mosques in New Zealand. Senator Fraser Anning was also egged by an irate teenager, whom Anning then slapped in the face. Fifty people died in the March 15 assault in the New Zealand city of Christchurch. And finally, *)Hundreds of tarantulas seized at Manila airport Customs officials in the Philippines probably thought it was snack time: gift-wrapped boxes of cookies and oatmeal flown all the way from Poland. Except it wasn't cookies and oatmeal. It was 757 live tarantulas. A man tried to claim them, saying they were "collectible items." He's been arrested.

In the second episode of The Ian Haworth Show, I look at why the New Zealand Prime Minister is right to deny the white supremacist shooter the notoriety he craved. Sometimes, it's the controversial topics that are the ones we should be talking about. There is an argument that our politicans don't take a hard-lined approach because it doesn't win votes. Qld independent senator, Fraser Anning doesn't seem to care. Outspoken about immigration, same-sex marriage and other equally sensitive topics, Senator Anning made headlines and was labelled a racist when he attended a protest where demonstrators made nazi salutes, but he says he just wants the best for the country.

Speaking of the White House, we'd like to, but we can't go past the current scandal that has erupted between the reality star president and the reality star ex-staffer. It's Omarosa vs Trump: Round 1. In Australia we deep dive into the maiden speech of Fraser Anning and look at the motivations that may be driving his racist remarks. We also talk about the Great Barrier Reef, asbestos and Big Foot! Yep, the hairy one makes his appearance in 'stupid politics news'. The leadership spill in Australia had not happened when we recorded. We will be looking at how that has played out in the next episode.
