Episode Notes Delta Air Lines is facing mounting pressure from travelers and the U.S. government as disruptions caused by a recent IT outage continue. The Department of Transportation is launching an investigation into the carrier, writes Airlines Reporter Meghna Maharishi.  Delta has canceled more than 5,000 flights after the outage last Friday caused systems relying on Microsoft Windows to crash. Delta CEO Ed Bastian said on Sunday that the airline would provide Delta SkyMiles and travel vouchers as a “gesture of apology.” However, some customers said they haven't received any vouchers and report long wait times to reach customer service where some have gotten conflicting information.  In addition, the Department of Transportation said the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection would conduct the investigation due to the ongoing flight disruptions and reports of customer service issues.  Next, Venice implemented a roughly $5 entry fee for day trippers earlier this year as part of its strategy to combat mass tourism. Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam provides three takeaways from Venice's experiment. Habtemariam notes the number of day trippers to Venice during the 29 days the entry fee was in effect decreased compared to 2023 levels. Venice collected more than $2.5 million in fees, which local officials intend to use to improve the city's infrastructure. In addition, a city spokesperson said Venice is considering raising the entry fee next year and expanding the number of days it's in effect.  Finally, as business travel spending worldwide is expected to boom this year, American Express data has revealed the five U.S. markets seeing the fastest growth based on commercial customer hotel transactions, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill. As business travel spending in North America has already reached pre-Covid levels, O'Neill reports college towns Princeton, New Jersey and Durham, North Carolina occupy the top two spots in Amex's rankings. Amex compared business travel spending occurring between April 2023 and March 2024 with the same period a year earlier.  Producer/Presenter: Jose Marmolejos Connect with Skift LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/skift/ X: https://twitter.com/skift Facebook: https://facebook.com/skiftnews Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/skiftnews/ WhatsApp: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaAL375LikgIXmNPYQ0L/ Subscribe to @SkiftNews and never miss an update from the travel industry.

On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Feb. 2 at 6:30 a.m. CT: COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Nikki Haley’s path to the Republican presidential nomination is rapidly shrinking. But she’s vowing to stay in the race indefinitely. And the harder she fights, the more Republican officials fear she may be hurting Donald Trump's long-term prospects in the all-but certain general election against Democratic President Joe Biden. Trump allies describe Haley’s continued presence as a distraction, a drain on resources and a source of frustration. They also worry that Trump’s preoccupation with Haley, whom he frequently calls “birdbrain,” might further alienate moderate voters and suburban women. In practical terms, the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential primary season has barely begun. But after decisive wins in Iowa and New Hampshire, Trump's grip on the nomination has never been stronger. CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — Fire officials say a small plane has crashed into a home at a Florida mobile home park, killing several people aboard the plane and in the home. There’s no immediate word on the exact number of people killed. Authorities say the single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza V35 reportedly went down at about 7 p.m. Thursday in Clearwater, about three miles north of St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport. The FAA says the pilot had reported an engine failure. Clearwater's fire chief says the plane hit a mobile home and at least three homes received fire damage. NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — At least three people have been killed in Kenya's capital and 270 others were injured when a truck loaded with gas exploded and set off an inferno that burned homes and warehouses. The death toll is likely to rise. A government spokesman said early Friday that a lot of people were home late at night when the fire reached their houses in a Nairobi neighborhood. Police and the local Red Cross said 271 people were rushed to several hospitals to be treated for injuries. Firefighters were searching the burned area later in the morning. WASHINGTON (AP) — A new poll shows half of U.S. adults believe Israel's war in Gaza has “gone too far." The poll by The Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found growing disapproval among Republicans and political independents for Israel's conduct of its military offensive in Gaza. And notably for President Joe Biden, about 7 out of 10 young people in Biden's Democratic Party disapprove of his approach to the conflict. Overall, 31% of U.S. adults approve of Biden’s handling of the conflict, including just 46% of Democrats. The U.S. has become increasingly isolated in its support of Israel as the Palestinian death toll rises. NEW YORK (AP) — The latest COVID-19 vaccines are 54% effective at preventing symptomatic infection in adults. That's according to the first U.S. study to assess how well the updated shots work. The shots became available last year and are designed to better protect against more recent coronavirus variants. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday released a study of how well the vaccine has worked since then. The finding is similar to what’s been reported in other countries. It's also similar to what was reported for earlier versions of the vaccines. WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says he never directed anyone on his staff to keep his cancer surgery and hospitalization secret from the White House but acknowledges he should have handled it differently. He apologized for keeping President Joe Biden and others in the dark for weeks. Austin was speaking to reporters in the Pentagon briefing room on Thursday, providing his most extensive comments to date on the secrecy surrounding his cancer diagnosis and struggles with complications since his surgery on Dec. 22. It was the first time he answered reporters' questions since his surgery. WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says it's time to more significantly disable Iran-backed militias that have struck at U.S. forces and ships in the Middle East. And he says the U.S. is poised to take significant action in response to the deaths of three U.S. service members in Jordan on Sunday. For days the U.S. has hinted strikes are imminent. While the threat of retaliation has driven some militant groups to say they were stopping hostilities, as late as Thursday Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels were still attacking vessels and fired a ballistic missile at a Liberian-flagged container ship in the Red Sea. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has issued an executive order that targets Israeli settlers in the West Bank who've been accused of attacking Palestinians and Israeli peace activists in the occupied territory. The order Thursday imposes financial sanctions and visa bans in an initial round against four individuals. The order says those settlers were involved in acts of violence, as well as threats and attempts to destroy or seize Palestinian property. The penalties aim to block the four from using the U.S. financial system and bar American citizens from dealing with them. U.S. officials are evaluating whether to punish others involved in attacks that have intensified during the Israel-Hamas war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the U.S. penalties. LONDON (AP) — A judge in London has thrown out a lawsuit by former U.S. President Donald Trump accusing a former British spy of making “shocking and scandalous claims” that were false and harmed his reputation. Judge Karen Steyn said the defendant was entitled to summary judgment and the case should not go to trial. Trump sued Orbis Business Intelligence, the company founded by Christopher Steele, who created a dossier in 2016 that contained rumors and uncorroborated allegations about Trump that erupted in a political storm just before he was inaugurated. The former president sought damages from Orbis for allegedly violating British data protection laws. The firm sought to have the case thrown out. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The 66th annual Grammy Awards are right around the corner, airing live from Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena on Sunday. So, what can viewers expect? Some new, some old. Comedian Trevor Noah will host for a fourth time. Performances — and the arc of the show — will reflect the nominees, which this year in the major categories, are led by women. There are many potentially-history making moments, too. Executive producers Raj Kapoor and Ben Winston, as well as Recording Academy CEO and President Harvey Mason jr., walk The Associated Press through the 2024 Grammy Awards. NEW YORK (AP) — Legendary Southern rapper Juvenile says he had been unaware of NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series when a social media post suggested that he do a performance, setting off a frenzy. Two months later, Juvenile's performance became one of the most notable of last year. with nearly 7 million views. NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series began almost 15 years ago as a niche online platform mainly highlighting rock and folk musicians. The series has become one of the premiere live music platforms and a pop culture phenomenon, expanding to include performers from across musical genres. The creators say it all started after they attended a performance where an artist was not heard. The Knicks and Sixers each win despite missing key players, the Lakers overcome injuries to win in Boston and the Cavaliers remain red hot. In college games, the ranked Arizona men win, but Wisconsin loses and the top-ranked South Carolina women remain undefeated. In pro football, it looks like the Commanders have a new coach. NEW YORK (AP) — American Express is rolling out several updates to its Delta SkyMiles credit cards that will give additional benefits to users. AmEx is eager to soothe sore Delta Air Lines customers who have considered abandoning the airline after last year’s SkyMiles loyalty fiasco. The updates unveiled Thursday will also come with a higher annual fee, which AmEx says it believes that the new benefits will more than pay for. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Astronomers say an asteroid as big as a skyscraper will pass within 1.7 million miles of Earth on Friday. There's no chance of it hitting us since it will pass seven times the distance from Earth to the moon. NASA estimates the space rock is between 690 feet and 1,575 feet across. That means the asteroid could be similar in size to New York City's Empire State Building or Chicago's Willis Tower. The asteroid was discovered in 2008. It won't be back our way again until 2032, but it will be a much more distant encounter, staying 45 million miles away. NEW YORK (AP) — Under cover of darkness a year ago, someone slipped into the Central Park Zoo, cut a hole in a cage and freed a majestic Eurasian eagle-owl named Flaco. The owl has become one of New York City's most beloved characters since then. By day he lounges in Manhattan’s courtyards and parks and perches on fire escapes. He spends his nights hooting atop water towers and preying on the city’s abundant rats. Some experts feared he wouldn't be able to hunt after a lifetime in captivity To their surprise, Flaco is thriving. But as his second year in the spotlight begins, the crime that led to his freedom remains unsolved. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is managing editor of the national newsroom for Lee Enterprises. Have you ever wondered how people travel so often? Or maybe you're listening to this now because you've always wanted to travel more but couldn't figure out how to make it happen? Stay tuned to hear about one of our favorite strategies to make the most of our yearly travel budget: Travel Hacking. #1 Beginners Travel Hacking Travel hacking is using credit card points to pay for travel expenses. With maybe our favorite (and definitely most used) card, The Capital One Venture card, you accumulate points with your regular spend (the amount you put on a card each month) and then “erase” any travel purchases you make. We've used this for free flights to Europe, twice and also many domestic flights since signing up for the card in 2017. #2 Intermediate Travel Hacking If you feel like you are on board with the Capital One Venture card and want to take your hacking to the next level, we recommend the Capital One Venture X card. The difference here is that this card costs $395/year. That high annual fee gets you the same eraser power you had before, but also comes with a $300 travel credit (when booked through the travel portal!), and 10,000 anniversary points- which that alone is $400 a year (as long as you actually use them!). It comes with priority pass for airport lounges, access to signature select airport lounges, and capital one lounges. It also gives you Global Entry/TSA precheck and some other fun perks like basic travel insurance, rotating memberships through the year, etc.#3 Expert Travel HackingIn our world, expert travel hacking comes in the form of transferring your points to partners instead of using them in a portal or erasing points. What that means is you have, let's say, 10,000 credit card points. Now instead of using those as an eraser, you transfer them to Delta and use them like Delta Skymiles. In this case, you often get much better redemption rates (cent per point!). Capital One Venture Referral https://capital.one/3LT5QSw Capital One Venture X Referral - https://capital.one/3XxznDDSapphire Preferred Referral Link- https://www.referyourchasecard.com/6f/QR1AP1HFLV Favorite Blog: https://frequentmiler.com/Support the showJoin our Travel Community on Facebook to connect with other like minded travelers, share stories, tips, tricks and travel hack wins- Travel More Insiders Subscribe to our Newsletter for access to our giveaways and travel hacking tips Visit our Website https://travelmorepodcast.com/ Join Going (Scott's Cheap Flights) Use code: MAGIC20 for 20% off your first year! Play Episode Listen Later Jan 31, 2022 30:03

We start this episode with a couple of basics on travel hacking and credit card churning:If you're nervous about it, don't be! Millions of people play this game. Mike has played it for a decade, earning millions of miles, and his credit score is near perfect. It works if done thoughtfully. There are many card types:Hotels, Airlines, Cash Back, Retailers, etc.Banks like Chase, Citi, US BankCard providers like Visa, Mastercard, American ExpressBusiness Cards, Consumer CardsThe variations of these create so many opportunities for sign-up bonuses. How it worksThe value comes from the sign-up bonuses, not from everyday spending. So if you want to play the game, you need to churn. You apply for a card, meet the minimum requirements such as spending $3,000 in the first three months, and then the points are deposited into your account. When you get the points, here's how you use them:Hotel points are generally worth about $0.005 apiece. Airline miles are around $0.02 apiece. So on everyday credit card spend, that's .5% and 2% back.Always do the math when you're looking for ways to use your points and miles. For example, if a hotel room costs $50 or 50,000 points, pay with cash! Because you can likely use those 50,000 points to get $250 or more in value later.Think of your miles and points as cash and do your due diligence. Our one million miles goal is worth about $20,000.Risks + Considerations for travel hacking through credit card churning:Canceling a card hurts your score because it lowers your available credit, raising your credit utilization. But it doesn't hurt a lot if you have different types of credit and a good history.  Do not ever cancel your oldest or first credit card, as that's your years of credit history and will impact your credit rating.  Canceling a card might get you “flagged” by a card provider, but we've never gotten denied for a card, which makes us think that if it's a factor, it's a minor factor in them approving you. Mike typically keeps a card for a year, canceling before the fee or just over a year if there's no fee. And he has never had an issue.Remember that many cards now will only let you earn a bonus once per lifetime, so you can't get the same 100,000 miles from the Delta Gold Amex card. But there's a Delta Platinum Amex, a Delta Gold Business, and a Delta Platinum Business. There are so many opportunities; you won't run out. Check out thepointsguy.com for a great list of cards.Don't do too many at a time. Banks won't approve you with too many open lines of credit. Also, it's hard to manage, and you may end up missing a bonus. We recommend you do 2-3 a year if you're starting out.  And then ramp up to maybe 5 or 6 when you're good at the game. How to make it workKeep track of your points with a site like Awardwallet.com. Mike's been using Award wallet for over ten years. It shows your current balances, links to your accounts, and notifies you when your balances are about to expire. Think ahead to where you want to go and have a general plan for the types of points you want to use and earn. For example, if you live in an area that doesn't fly Southwest much, don't get a ton of Southwest points that you have no plan to use. On the other hand, getting Delta SkyMiles is a no-brainer if you live in Atlanta, a Delta hub.Think ahead of big expenses coming up to have your cards in time for those expenses.  Remember it can take 2-3 weeks for that card to arrive after you're approved online.  Remember to pay these new credit card bills, or it will ding your credit, and you'll get charged late fees and interest, which you don't want.Remember, you can do personal and business credit cards if you have a business or LLC.  We wrap up this episode by sharing some of our upcoming summer travel plans and how we leveraged points to book those trips.  Top 3 takeaways:You could easily rack up 500,000 in travel points this year, especially across a couple who hasn't done a significant amount of travel hacking already.  Be thoughtful and intentional about how you approach this, and it can be very lucrative if done well.  This approach to earning points and then using them takes extra time, so realize this is a tradeoff in your time versus your money.  And it can be a fun tradeoff!  Show References:Award Wallet - Free Loyalty Points Tracker (they also have a paid version)The Points Guy websiteThe Points Guy Free Travel Tracking AppThe Points Guy Beginning Guide to Points and MilesThe Points Guy - Best Credit Cardsfriends on FIRE episode #044 | Credit Scores + Do they matter?friends on FIRE episode #133 | How to put a value on your timefriends on FIRE episode #132 | Full-year expense review with our spouses---Follow friends on FIRETwitterInstagramFacebookLinkedInLeave us a voicemail or text us: 404-981-3370eMail us at:  friendsonfiremm@gmail.comVisit our website: www.friendsonfire.org---Other LinksMaggie's Blog: Mostly Minimal LifeMike's Book: Your New Relationship with Money

#092 | Pet Peeves + Power Moves

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 12, 2021 36:24

After discussing our recent covid vaccinations, we dive into a probably too-long vent about our pet peeves. Eventually, we get to the power moves that we recommend everyone strive for.  Financial pet peeves that drive us crazy:Shaming others about their financial decisions.  It’s personal finance.  You can share what you’d do, but once someone else has made a decision, let it be, it’s their money.  On that note, please know we don’t mean this list of pet peeves to be shaming; this podcast is our personal views on finances.    Not taking advantage of your company’s 401k match.  It’s free money, and that’s 100% immediate ROI. How retailers convince you that you saved money on something when you actually bought something you didn’t truly need. That’s not how saving money works.  Letting your kids have whatever they want.  We are parents of 5 kids, so we are talking from experience here.  Kids will ask for lots of stuff; it’s your job to manage what they need vs. want.  And kids will throw fits and not like you briefly when you say no, but they’ll learn boundaries, and they’ll be okay. And they’ll slowly learn that stuff doesn’t create happiness. The sneaky way banks convince you that refinancing your mortgage and adding 30 more years to whatever you had saves you money.  It might save money in the short-term on your monthly payment and future interest, but often the total cost of the loan is more if you add up the ten years you’ve already had a mortgage to the 30 years you just extended it to.  You’ve now spread your mortgage over 40 years.    The idea that because mortgage interest is deductible, that means it’s good to have. The idea that the bank tells you “how much house you can afford.”That renting a house is throwing your money away.Unscrupulous and misleading sales tactics.  I know they work, but that doesn’t make them OK.  Just share the price upfront, and be clear + simple about what you’re selling and why.  Be cautious, ask questions, assume someone else is trying to sell you something.Retiring after only a few years in the workforce. That insurance companies are somehow your friends.I work hard for my money, and I deserve X item. When people dismiss saving money because they “want to enjoy their money.”Buying crap you don’t need, especially if it’s to impress other people or just mindless shopping.  Using credit cards to buy things you can’t afford and don’t need.  Financial power moves that make us happy:We’ve broken out our power move recommendations into four main buckets. In this past life regression, you will be able to explore different key moments in a past life. The hypnotic state is simply a relaxed state of the mind. The alpha state, or a relaxed, calm state where you're not thinking too much, is all that is needed for hypnosis to occur. Therefore, guided meditations or guided imagery (as the experts refer to it) is all that is needed for you to achieve the same results as you would from past life hypnosis! This exercise can be done alone, with another person, or as a group. After the guided meditation is over, it is helpful to write down everything you remember about your experiences during this guided meditation. It is also good to talk about your experiences with others. And maybe you'll even find out you knew each other in your past lives! It's also good to note that sometimes people feel like they are doing it wrong, or that they can't meditate. Know that there is no wrong way of doing this. Just simply relax and follow the guided meditation and see where your mind and soul take you. As always, please follow, like, share, & subscribe to help this podcast grow. It’s time for part 2 of How to Save Time (and Your Sanity) at the Airport. In part 1, we talked about how to be prepared for your flight. This episode is all about security. We talk about knowing which line you should be in, the 3-1-1 rule for liquids in your carry on bag, and then we go into detail on the three types of lines that you can be in. We also talk about things you can do to help keep the line moving and not hold up everyone behind you. We also share why we love TSA Pre✓ ® and what you can do to get it. We also talk about the VIP for VIPs called CLEAR and many more travel tips. This episode will save you time and help you to avoid embarrassing mistakes while making it through security like you do it everyday.   Show Notes [02:22] Security is one of those things that you need to be prepared for. Even seasoned travelers sometimes forget the rules that need to be followed in the security line. [03:24] Plan ahead because the person in front of you may not be prepared. Check out the TSA website for current and updated security information. [04:02] 1. Know which line you are supposed to be in. You need to know if you need to be in the regular line or TSA Pre✓ ® . Check your boarding pass or the app to be sure. [04:51]  2. The 3-1-1 rule is 3.4 ounces or less of liquid per container. You can have one clear plastic quart sized bag with a zip top that contains all of your liquids. 1 bag per passenger. Medications and breast milk can be exceptions. [07:07] The above rules are for your carry on bag. You can put more liquids in a checked bag. [08:22] Now we are going to talk about the regular line, the TSA Pre✓ ® line, and the CLEAR line. [08:36] If you don't travel a lot or can't get security clearance, you will likely go through the regular line. [09:13] You may have to remove your shoes. Pay attention to what others around you are doing. Be prepared and wear something easy to take off and put on. Don't block the line while lacing your shoes. [10:40] You will also have to remove your laptop, bag of liquids, everything in your pockets, and your belt and jacket. Prepare before you get up to the front of the line. [11:46] Don't bring weapons and listen to TSA. [12:13] Put the things in the bin that go in the bin. Put your carry on onto the belt and push things forward. [13:05] Walk through the scanner. Put your feet on the mark, raise your arms, and listen to the instructions. [13:38] Once through, grab your items and move out of the way. [14:57] We love TSA Pre✓ ®. You can purchase it for $85 for five years. [16:14] To be qualified you need to go through a background check. Certain airports allow you to do this while you are there. You can also do it at outside locations. [17:22] Once you get your known traveler ID, you will use it every time you book a flight. [18:23] The TSA Pre✓ ® line is shorter, and you don't have to remove your shoes. You don't have to take out your laptop or liquids. You get VIP service. You go straight through. There is no body scanner. You still have to take your keys and phone out. Although, you could still be randomly selected to be scanned. [19:52] Make sure you know what you are doing in the line. Not all airports have it, and it’s not always open. [21:22] CLEAR is like VIP VIP. Atlanta and Minneapolis have this. A few airports have this. it's $15 a month or $99 a year with Delta SkyMiles, $79 for platinum and gold, and free for diamond members. [23:02] They use a retina scan and fingerprint. There is a person at the kiosk that help you move through quickly. They take care of security identification and allow you to walk straight up to the bins. [25:05] CLEAR helps because TSA Pre✓ ® lines are getting longer. It's about saving time for consumers. [26:36] Carry on bags are one of Dianne's pet peeves. Chris likes not having to wait for checked bags. [28:22] Know the size that your airline allows. [29:24] Avoid liquids or keep in mind the 3-1-1 rule. [30:17] Watch the weight of your bag too. [30:50] They ask people to check roller bags for a reason. If they are asking, go ahead and check it. Most of the time, you get it when you get off the plane and if it is checked, there is no charge.   [33:10] If the overhead bin is closed, that means that it's full. Put your personal item under the seat not in the bin. Keep your comfort items close to you. [36:24] Think about breakables. Sometimes it's more beneficial to ship them back. [37:17] Some airlines are guaranteeing shorter wait times for checked bags. [38:25] Tune in for part 3, next week, when we talk about boarding the plane.   Links and Resources: Episode 4 - How to Save Time (and Your Sanity) at the Airport (part 1) How to Save Time (and Your Sanity) at the Airport Blog Post TSA Website Apply for TSA Pre✓ ® CLEAR   For pictures, tips and more, be sure to check out our Fly with Chris and Di Facebook page and signup to download a copy of The Best City for You. I will also tackle how to make the most of student loans, and how to save for life’s big adventures.     Since we have adventure on our minds, I think now is a perfect opportunity to talk about Travel Rewards. With U.S. airlines expected to carry more than 600 million passengers on domestic flights this year and credit card debt levels exploding, we can expect airfare savings to be increasingly important in the months ahead.   Jill Gonzales is going to fill us in on how to make smart decisions about choosing a frequent flyer program. You will learn the difference between a frequent flyer program and a rewards credit card, and then understand just how the WalletHub study was done. There is a lot of useful information in this episode, so be prepared to take notes!   What You Will Learn in This Episode: To help travelers make the best decisions for their wallets, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2018’s Best Frequent Flyer Programs, which ranks the 10 largest domestic airlines based on 23 key metrics, ranging from the value of a point/mile to blackout dates for rewards flights. WalletHub’s report also features a custom calculator that allows users to personalize the results based on their own budgets. You can find a few highlights from those results below.   Delta SkyMiles is the best frequent flyer program for the third straight year.    The average airline rewards program gives frequent flyers 12% off their airline spending. And they’re all free to join.     Hawaiian Airlines offers the most rewards value to frequent flyers ($19.95 per $100 spent), with Alaska Airlines coming in a close second ($19.87 per $100 spent).    Four of the 10 largest airlines are offering more rewards in 2018 than in 2017, sweetening the pot by an average of 20%.    Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways are the only two major airlines whose miles do not expire because of inactivity.    The Frontier Airlines Credit Card and the Lufthansa Credit Card are 2018’s best airline credit cards, according to WalletHub’s editors.    For the full report, including the custom calculator, please visit:  https://wallethub.com/edu/best-frequent-flyer-program/25943/   Resources The Seven Stages of Money Maturity
