Send us a textToday's episode is my conversation about the 1929 film The Broadway Melody. My friend Kevin Pettit from the See You at the Movies newsletter joins me to discuss the film and we talk about whether the film was there just to support the music being played, the degree to which this film is was considered scandalous at the time, and whether or not the film earns the love triangle (quadrangle?) that serves as the centerpiece to the "action."You can watch The Broadway Melody on YouTube or purchase a copy for your collection and be sure to check out Kevin's newsletter.Other films mentioned in this episode include:Glorious Betsy directed by Alan Crosland and Gordon Hollingshead (listen to the episode discussing the film)Tombstone directed by George P. On this episode, Jules and Erica talk all about colonoscopies with Jules's gastroenterologist, Dr. Eric Goldberg of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Goldberg answers:1) Why should everyone get a colonoscopy by at least age 45, if not sooner? Who might have to get a colonoscopy sooner, including those with family history or alarm symptoms?2) Why is the colonoscopy prep necessary? Do we really have to drink all that gross liquid? Are there other options for colonoscopy prep? 3) What actually goes on during a colonoscopy and what is a gastroenterologist looking for during the procedure?4) What are the risks of a colonoscopy? 5) What happens during the recovery from a colonoscopy? 6) How often does someone need to get a colonoscopy? We also cover follow-up care for celiac disease, including how often serology should be done, and how often celiac patients should undergo follow-up endoscopy. My guest today worked for CM from 1994 to 2006. Her first season was in Club Med Sandpiper as an Excursion G.O. She held other positions such as Reception, Ski Instructor, IGO Trainer, and Recruitment and Affectations. My trilingual guest grew up in Florence, Italy, and has a bachelor's degree in Italian Renaissance Art History from Harvard University. She now lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts and she is here to regale us with her many CM stories. Who is this Renaissance woman? Well, it is the one and only, Shehime Arshad! Shehime worked in the Club Med villages of Sandpiper, Copper Mountain (5x), Paradise Island, and Crested Butte (4x). I hope you like funny stories because Shehime has them! Some of the stories are duct-taping Eric Goldberg to the entrance of restaurant (with a ferret no less!) in Copper, being stranded her first season on the road with eleven French lawyers, epic prank wars with the Four Horsemen of Paradise Island in 2002, to quite possibly being the only woman ever to turn down five-time Olympic medalist Alberto “Tomba la Bomba” Tomba when she was at Copper Mountain in 1996. Trust me, you need to listen to this interview! Shehime worked with CDVs Howard McCarley, Jean-Pierre Grand, Aureo Stern, Angie Boucher, and Ryan Leach, to name a few. Shehime also talks a little about her move to the offices in Miami when she was in Recruitment and Affectations in 2005. If you were an early 90s G.O., you will love this episode with Shehime! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available to download on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Podchaser, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. Fresh from playing the Paranoia Mandatory Bonus Fun Card Game, Dan and Paul discuss their experience with various editions of the Paranoia RPG. Stay alert, trust no one, and keep your laser handy! Paranoia is a humorous role-playing game set in a dystopian future along the lines of Nineteen Eighty-Four, Brave New World, Logan's Run, and THX 1138; however, the tone of the game is rife with black humor, frequently tongue-in-cheek rather than dark and heavy. Most of the game's humor is derived from the players' (usually futile) attempts to complete their assignment while simultaneously adhering to the Computer's arbitrary, contradictory and often nonsensical security directives. Originally designed and written by Greg Costikyan, Dan Gelber, and Eric Goldberg, and first published in 1984 by West End Games, since 2004 Paranoia has been published under license by Mongoose Publishing. The game won the Origins Award for Best Roleplaying Rules of 1984 and was inducted into the Origins Awards Hall of Fame in 2007. Paranoia is notable among tabletop games for being more competitive than co-operative, with players encouraged to betray one another for their own interests, as well as for keeping a light-hearted, tongue in cheek tone despite its dystopian setting. Episode SummaryIn pursuit of another Oscar-worthy animated feature, Disney chose a culturally significant protagonist and pumped up the romance for Pocahontas (1995). Unsurprisingly, good intentions didn't prevent a group of white men from creating a hugely problematic film, rife with gross historical inaccuracies, racism, and misogyny! Pocahontas underperformed at the box office, and the only Oscar went to Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz for best original song.Episode BibliographyAleiss, A. (1995, June 24). ERIC GOLDBERG - Aladdin “The Genie” This was a live recording with Disney Studios.. ERIC GOLDBERG (Animator) is renowned for his role in creating and supervising the animation of the Genie character for “Aladdin,” for directing “Pocahontas” and the “Rhapsody in Blue” and “Carnival of the Animals” sequences for “Fantasia/2000,” along with numerous other achievements. He is the recipient of the 2011 Winsor McCay award from ASIFA-Hollywood for lifetime achievement in animation. Among his recent work, he created new animation for the Cirque du Soleil show, “Drawn to Life,” at Disney Springs in Orlando, Fla. He has also contributed animation to a variety of projection shows and special projects for Disney Parks and Experiences around the world. Goldberg's animation knowledge started early, creating flip books at age six and moving on to making prize-winning Super 8 films from the age of 13. After attending Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, majoring in illustration, Goldberg became a full-time assistant animator to legendary director Richard Williams on “Raggedy Ann and Andy.” He went on to direct countless TV spots for Williams in London before coming to Los Angeles to serve as director of animation on the Emmy®-winning “Ziggy's Gift.” Returning to London, he co-founded Pizazz Pictures, a commercial studio with a world-wide clientele. Goldberg joined Walt Disney Animation Studios in 1990 to supervise the animation of the wise-cracking Genie in “Aladdin.” He then co-directed “Pocahontas” (1995), and animated the feisty satyr Phil in “Hercules” (1997). His directing stints on “Fantasia/2000” were a labor of love and were inspired by both George Gershwin and the legendary theatrical caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, who served as artistic consultant. Other Disney credits include “The Princess and the Frog” (for which he supervised Louis, the trumpet-playing alligator, earning him his third Annie Award for best character animation), “Winnie the Pooh” (supervising Rabbit and the “Backson Song” sequence), and “Wreck-It Ralph” (helping to flesh out the character of King Candy). He also served as head of animation for 2013's Oscar®-nominated short, “Get a Horse!” and recently was the director, writer, and a supervising animator for the animated shorts “Disney Presents Goofy in How to Stay at Home.” Goldberg and wife, Susan, a talented artist and art director in her own right, have two daughters, Rachel and Jenny, who both work as artists in the entertainment industry.

We talked to animator Andrew Ford a couple years ago and the theme of that episode was Reach your goal and keep learning. Andrew's goal was to work at Disney and now that he's done it you can hear how his philosophy hasn't changed. Even after getting to Disney he still want to just get better. **- Links for this episode -**Andrew Ford - http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatoon/saskatchewan-animator-andrew-ford-disney-1.3936095Glen Keane - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen_KeaneMilt Kahl - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milt_KahlEric Goldberg - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Goldberg_(animator)Mark Henn - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_HennRandy Haycock - http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Randy_HaycockJohn Musker - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_MuskerMari-Mac by Great Big Sea - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AT07v9V4-wPatio Lanterns by Kim Mitchell - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbSuEQXX2C0

With the Thanksgiving season upon us, I thought it'd be a great opportunity to travel back in time to the days of Colonial America. Then I realized there's not really a lot of movies about the actual Thanksgiving story. So I decided to go with something that, although not about the Thanksgiving story itself, could transport us back to those days. And it's also a great opportunity to do something we haven't tackled yet on the podcast, a Disney animation. In the mid-1990s, the animation team at Disney was on a roll. Tapping into their pool of talent, Aladdin animator Eric Goldberg and The Rescuers Down Under director Mike Gabriel teamed up to take on a new challenge: adapting a true story for the big screen in Pocahontas. Timed to release on exactly 400 years after the real Pocahontas was born, Disney released their own musical interpretation of the story on June 16th, 1995. The movie boasted an amazing all-star cast including Irene Bedard, Mel Gibson, and Christian Bale, just to name a few. With a budget at about $55 million to make, it was a smash hit in the box office as it raked in over half that in the opening weekend. In all, it made over $140 million in theaters. At the time, that put it at #8 on the all-time Disney list of box office results. Of course, as time goes on its dropped quite a bit—as of recording this, thanks to Disney's acquisition of Pixar and Star Wars, Pocahontas is #65. While it was certainly a box office success, Pocahontas was severely criticized by a lot of historians for telling a tale that most people now believe to be a true story when, in fact, it was almost entirely inaccurate with what actually happened.
Mousetalgia ushers in the Disney holiday season this week with a conversation with Emmy Award-winning writer and director Kevin Deters, who joins us to talk about his Prep and Landing television shows. Deters talks about the show's characters and the other classic holiday television offerings that helped inspire Prep and Landing. Then, Jeff talks about a pair of talks from the Walt Disney Family Museum that hosted director Brad Bird and legendary animator Eric Goldberg. Bird spoke about Walt Disney's "Tomorrowland," and his optimism, innovation, and futurist way of seeing his world. Goldberg spoke about the four animators that inspired the Nine Old Men, which include Norm Ferguson, Ham Luske, Bill Tytla, and Fred Moore - and Jeff recaps both events. Finally, Mousetalgia welcomes Marvel Creative Director for Themed Entertainment Brian Crosby back to the show to talk about Marvel's forthcoming Haunted Mansion comic book series, and to preview Marvel's Super Hero HQ, which opens this week in Disneyland.
The Mouse Castle Lounge Podcast: Disney News and Interviews, Cocktails and Conversations
For over 50 years, the Children's Hospital of Orange County has provided state of the art pediatric care to children throughout Southern California. Walt Disney himself was among the many community leaders who championed the need for an area children's hospital in the early 1960s and helped make it a reality. CHOC Children's, as it's known today, has grown from a 62-bed children's hospital into a complete pediatric health care system with numerous facilities serving multiple counties. CHOC Children's has been recognized nationally for both its critical care and nursing excellence. Each year, the Disneyland Resort partners with CHOC Children's to put on the CHOC Walk in the Park, the largest single pediatric fundraising event in the country. It's a three-mile stroll through Disneyland, Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney that draws thousands of participants annually. Since 1990, the CHOC Walk has raised over $24 million to support the health and well-being of children. Joining Tim in The Mouse Castle Lounge today is Zach Abrams, director of special events and corporate relations for the CHOC Children's Foundation. He's going to tell us everything we need to know about this year's event coming up on October 11th. Before we get to Zach, though, Tim wraps up part two of his fascinating conversation with author, historian and former Disney animator Tom Sito. Last week, Tom shared stories about his memorable animation career, where he worked alongside many of the greats including Richard Williams, Shamus Culhane, Art Babbitt, Glen Keane and Eric Goldberg. Tom appeared recently on the PBS American Experience documentary “Walt Disney” and last week he talked at length about the documentary and its portrayal of Walt, his life and his legacy. Tim and Tom pick up that part of the conversation by looking at one of more persistent—and false—rumors that continues to dog Walt Disney's reputation. www.TheMouseCastle.comRSS Feed: http://themousecastle.libsyn.com/rss

Eric Goldberg opens the 7th Annual Academy of Art University Fall Animation Festival by giving a talk about his career path and by giving a live drawing demonstration.

(((HEADPHONES STRONGLY RECOMMENDED))) Call or text with your comments!!! New number -> (805) 270-5785 In this episode of the Mouse Lounge, celebrate 70 years with the one that started it all, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. From the Walt Disney Family Museum: In a darkened theater filled to overflowing at the D23 Expo, I had the honor of sitting in the presence of true Disney legends and experts. Producer, Don Hahn moderates a panel discussion about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In attendance were animator, Andreas Deja, who invoked life into Scar in the Lion King, and Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, Eric Goldberg, responsible for animating the Genie in Aladdin, and directing the jaw dropping Rhapsody in Blue and hilarious Flamingo with a Yo Yo sequences in Fantasia 2000, Disney historian and author, J.B. Kaufman, animation historian and prolific writer, Charles Solomon, and special guest, looking dazzling at 90 years young, Marge Gower Champion, the live action model for Snow White. Each week, in From the Vault we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short, television or radio program, or Disneyland Record. This week we serve up a triple feature. At the beginning of 1938, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was taking America by storm. By using the radio medium, Walt was able to stoke the fire of his marketing machine promoting Snow White; while at the same time, entertaining a national audience. On January 2nd 1938, a radio episode of The Mickey Mouse Theater hit the airwaves, coupling elements from the picture with other famous Disney characters. Pay particular attention as Walt himself effortlessly goes from his natural speaking voice into character as Mickey. Next, scoop up slices of film from the cutting room floor and wonder, what if? Have a listen right here to the marvelous but deleted soup sequence from Snow White. Each week we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. This week, enjoy a one of a kind compare and contrast as you hear back to back versions of Snow Whites Scary Adventures, first in on the west coast in Disneyland then in Walt Disney Worlds Magic Kingdom. There are striking differences between the two. Which do you like better? We close the show with unique takes from the soundtrack. First from the newly remastered original soundtrack, the infectious Silly Song; then Satchmo Armstrong teaches you how to Whistle While You Work, and finishing with Ashley Tisdales turn at Some Day My Prince Will Come. Enjoy! Eric Goldberg is one of the most admired animators working today.
