This lyrical, stunning picture book tells a story about learning to love and celebrate your Asian-shaped eyes, in the spirit of Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry, and is a celebration of diversity. A young Asian girl notices that her eyes look different from her peers'. They have big, round eyes and long lashes. She realizes that her eyes are like her mother's, her grandmother's, and her little sister's. They have eyes that kiss in the corners and glow like warm tea, crinkle into crescent moons, and are filled with stories of the past and hope for the future. Drawing from the strength of these powerful women in her life, she recognizes her own beauty and discovers a path to self-love and empowerment. This powerful, poetic picture book will resonate with readers of all ages. In February, love is in the air. . . and on the air, as we hear of books with different takes on love. Laurie Dreyer, manager of the (currently under renovation) Lansingburgh branch of Troy Public Library tells us of four kids books. "Eyes That Kiss in the Corners" (Joanna Ho, ill. Dung Ho, 2021) tells of an Asian girl who realizes that her eyes differ from her classmates but resemble her mother's and grandmother's, helping her love them and herself more. "Hair Love" (Matthew A. Cherry, ill. Vashti Harrison, 2019) shows a father loving his daughter by helping her arrange her hair in a natural style. "Worm Loves Worm" (J. J. Austrian, ill. Mike Curato, 2016) brings the most basic story of one being loving another being. And "Anzu the Great Kaiju" (Benson Shum, 2022) shows a kaiju -- a large creature similar to Mothra or Godzilla -- torn between wanting to honor his parents by destroying a city yet discovering he loves the little people too much to do so. For more details on these and other books, visit www.thetroylibrary.org. To find other libraries in New York State, see https://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/libs/#Find. What should we say when a young child expresses or experiences racial bias? Maybe it's when a child makes a comment about somebody's skin color being ‘too dark' or how they don't want to play with a child of a different race. Or maybe it's when a child has experienced racial bullying or some other kind of racialized incident in the classroom. As adults, we may find ourselves reacting or freezing up in these moments. A healthier response is to prepare what early childhood education professor and scholar Dr. Rosemarie Allen calls “a treasure chest” of ready responses for disrupting racial bias in the moment. Guest: Dr. Rosemarie Allen MPR Dr. Rosemarie Allen, guest on Early Risers podcast Dr. Rosemarie Allen is a national leader around racial equity in early childhood. She's an associate professor in the School of Education at Metropolitan State University of Denver and is founder, president and CEO of the Center for Equity and Excellence, a consulting firm specializing in racial equity and inclusion. Episode Resources: Dr. Allen has authored two children's books about Black hair, “Stylish and Straight,” and “Cute and Curly.” She wrote these books in part, to provide white teachers with a window into the daily routines and lived experiences of Black children in their classrooms. Here are some other book titles and authors Dr. Allen recommends: How to Be an Antiracist by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi. Dr. Allen describes this book as a must- read for all educators. Waking up White by Debby Irving – a chronicle of a white educator's equity journey. The Proudest Blue: A Story of Hijab and Family by Ibtihaj Muhammad – a children's book about a Muslim girl's pride in wearing her hijab and how she responds to bullies at school. Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry – a children's book that celebrates the beauty of Black hair and a father's love for his daughter. Spare the Kids by Dr. Stacey Patton – a book for adults that unpacks the harm of using corporeal punishment as a means of disciplining Black children. Dr. Allen also recommends Dr. Patton's workshop on decolonizing Black parenting. Dr. Allen participated in a virtual panel discussion, “Teaching Anti-Racism: Making Sense of Race and Racism for Young Children” hosted by Minnesota Public Radio and Early Risers in June 2021. We also recommend Dr. Allen's 2016 TEDx talk “School suspensions are an adult behavior,” where she talks about the epidemic of school suspensions in pre-school settings and how children of color are disproportionately impacted.

In this final episode of our three-part series on the carceral curriculum, we engage educators with what manifesting freedom dreaming might look like in classrooms and curriculum. Our guests this episode are Ebony and Zani, two early childhood educators who are spending this year designing a small Montessori preschool in Washington, D.C. by engaging community members, families, and students as they create their curriculum. They insist that abolitionist and liberatory education must be done in community and with accountability to our students, their families, and their communities. In our Resource Room, elementary administrator Leensa Fufa returns to the classroom and shares how she uses self-portraits to facilitate conversation around identity with young learners. Michigan poet Carlina Duan shares her poem “Alien Miss Confronts Her Past,” from her newest book of poetry Alien Miss (University of Wisconsin Press). And monét and Erin sign off for a long winter's nap of freedom dreaming and rest. We'll be back February 5, 2022, with our next episode. Take care of yourselves. We love y'all. Johanna talks with Cassandra Freeman, Nikiya Mathis, and Cody Renard Richard about Black hair in theatre and film. Black actors' hair needs are continually neglected in the industry; producers are often woefully lacking in knowledge of the time, money, and work required to achieve various hairstyles. Companies often have no relationship with Black hair/wig stylists in their community, and leave Black actors to spend their own money and time on styling for their roles. In this episode, we discuss the ways theatre and film can end Black hair discrimination, and the effects such discrimination has had on Black artists.Mentioned in This Episode:Oscar JamesMolly RogersBridging The GapNational Black Hair & Makeup RegistryThe CCR Scholarship ProgramBroadway Advocacy CoalitionMore From Our Guests:Interview with CassandraCassandra's TwitterHAIRversations & HAIRstoriesNikiya's WebsiteInterview with CodyCody's WebsiteAdditional Resources:Black Hair GuideThe CROWN ActHair Love, A Short Film by Matthew A. Titled after Matthew A. Cherry's short film, "Hair Love," today's episode is with one of my best friends, Ama-rachi Aliogo. She takes me through her hair journey starting from being inspired by her sister to go natural, to embracing her whole self through patience and consistency, and turning to blogging to share her experiences and lessons accumulated over the years with others. In this episode, she speaks on letting go of Western standards of beauty, overcoming insecurities, and the most rewarding parts of fully owning her kinky, coily 4b hair. We're back with an all-new episode and we waste no time getting into things! This week, we're closing out Pride Month with a discussion on "Love, Victor" and "Batwoman," shouting out "Alexa and Katie" for their exceptional portrayal of mental illness, discussing which white actors are stepping down from their Black character roles, and re-capping all the details about that iconic Teen Wolf reunion, where Kat talks way too long about Dylan O'Brien. We're also getting into Dawson's Creek Season 1 Episode 6, "Baby," where we publically thank Kenny Leiverton for saving us from this Tamara/Pacey nightmare, question Gram's methods of baby delivery, and appreciate our very first Joey/Pacey solo scene. You might have seen this week’s Dropcast guest Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins on the late-night talk show State of the Culture where he serves as a co-host, speaking to your favorite celebrities on Conference Room H, or hosting Mogul, a hip hop podcast. He’s also accomplished in writing, photographing, and DJing, hailing from a career as a multimedia creative and journalist during his time at Complex. For The Dropcast’s 100th episode, Jinx shares thoughtful reflections on the state of culture from streetwear to Black History Month, and of course, this week’s hottest drops. After a quick but heavy roasting of Philipp Plein’s show which was accused of monetizing on the passing of Kobe Bryant, the quick hits take us into more Milan Fashion Week news. During a top secret press conference earlier this week, Raf Simons was officially confirmed as Co-Creative Director of Prada after a lengthy period of public speculation (3:58). On the topic of things that people will really want, Denim Tears has teamed up with Procell once again on a special T-shirt for the annual honoring of his mother’s passing, and all proceeds go towards the Every Mother Counts charity (5:14). Equally worth the anticipation is the red velvet pecan cake made from a recipe by Tremaine Emory’s late mother. This time, the cake is extra special, coming out in a box designed by Tom Sachs. Another new collab that’s telling a story is the Palace x adidas golf collection, which marks the former’s move into performance wear (9:26). Jian notes how there’s a cross-section between guys who chase the hype and hard core golfers while Jinx comments on the saturation of fashion into all the corners of life and culture. This takes the cast into an animated discussion about the intersection of sports, fashion, and what it takes to introduce style to the court and field. AWAKE alumni John Lopez has stepped into the playing field with his first drop of Ineverheardofyou, an independent venture featuring provocative customized Jordan 1s and a text-heavy trucker hat (14:20). Jinx taps into the ingenuity behind such a collection and its value for an up-and-coming brand. As February wraps up, Jinx reflects on the most memorable Black History Month moments including Matthew A. Cherry’s Best Animated Short film Oscar win, Calmatic taking home a Best Music Video Grammy for Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” and Tyler, the Creator’s many notable moments (29:55). Le psychothérapeute Gérald Pagès, auteur de Le grand livre de la tendresse, publié chez Albin Michel.À voir :Le court-métrage Hair Love, réalisé et écrit par Matthew A. Tender and empowering, HAIR LOVE is an ode to loving your natural hair - and a celebration of daddies and daughters everywhere. It’s when it’s up to Daddy to give his daughter an extra-special hair style in this story of self-confidence and the love between fathers and daughters. Zuri knows her hair is beautiful, but it has a mind of its own. It kinks, coils, and curls every which way. Mum always does Zuri's hair just the way she likes it - so when Daddy steps in to style it for an extra special occasion, he has a lot to learn. But he LOVES his Zuri, and he'll do anything to make her - and her hair - happy. For news and updates go to: sonypicturesanimation Hair_Love
