Its the second season finale AND Xmas special of The Last Show on Earth!!If there was a huge asteroid hurtling toward Earth threatening to destroy life as we know it and you could see one more show before you die, what would it be? It can be anything you want - a show you've seen before, one that you wish you'd seen, or something you've made up entirely. What would be YOUR Last Show on Earth? This is the podcast in which we ask a special guest the big, BIG question that nobody ever needed (or indeed) bothered to ask. Our guest for this special episode is Bertie Carvel.Destined to be remembered as one of the great actors of our time, Bertie Carvel is a force of nature and has had a meteoric rise to greatness winning numerous Tonys and Oliviers for musicals and plays and his career has seen triumph after triumph on screen and stage at the highest level. Known to musical theatre fans primarily for his incredible award winning performance as Miss Trunchbull in Matilda he has an impressive body of work with highlights including Parade, Macbeth, Ink, The 47th, Pygmalion, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Babylon, The Crown, Doctor Foster and detective show Dalgliesh - on which the lucky fella got the chance to work with Alistair Brammer!Links:Interviewhttps://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/features/bertie-carvel-interview-dalgliesh-channel-5-b2320161.htmlWikihttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bertie_CarvelTrunchbullhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64YS9vXI8V0Ink Olivier winhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4o91ISVkyQ4Matilda Olivier winhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVUBE3CqDg0Recording Matilda https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EdolAes-_AOn playing Trumphttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmWdCd12RWEThe 47th reviewhttps://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lifestyle/arts/the-47th-theater-review-donald-trump-election-play-1235127763/Hosted by John Owen-Jones and Alistair BrammerMusic written by John Owen-Jones and Alistair BrammerMusic performed by John Owen-Jones, Alistair Brammer and John QuirkRecorded & edited by John Owen-Jones and Alistair BrammerA 2024 John Owen-Jones Associates Productionwww.johnowenjones.com/podcast Hosted on Acast. Join Jonny in the Old Vic dressing room of one our finest - and most fragrant - actors, Bertie Carvel. Bertie is a double Olivier and Tony Award winning star and as deep a thinker about his life in the theatre as he is a transformational chameleon onstage. He and Jonny share a forensic discussion about larping, the inner body, Bertie's magic trick, why he now reads his reviews (and why he thinks acting companies should hold post-review therapy sessions), wanting the play to end just after you've opened, what it felt like to play Donald Trump and doing 652 performances of Missy Trunchbull in “Matilda”. This really is a conversation that captures what it sounds like to hear a great actor in the awkward and exhilarating throes of creativity. He's also the first guest to use the word “shriven”. Two years into his premiership, Tony Blair continues to ride a wave of unprecedented popularity. This unnerves the Queen who worries that the Royal Family's own popularity does not match up. When she commissions a wide-ranging poll, the results are sobering, leading the Queen to reflect on what she - and the Palace - could be doing differently. After Blair's reputation is further cemented by his successful humanitarian intervention in Kosovo, the Queen asks him what he would do to modernise the monarchy. His ideas and suggestions force the Queen to confront just how much change she would be prepared to accept. Edith Bowman speaks with co-writer Daniel Marc Janes and director Erik Richter-Strand and The Crown's long standing Props Master Owen Harrison. Actor Bertie Carvel, speaks about the attraction of playing Prime Minister Tony Blair. The playwright Mike Bartlett is busy. The 47th, his dark comedy about the next presidential race, with Bertie Carvel giving an uncanny performance as Donald Trump is about to open at the Old Vic in London. So too is Scandaltown, his modern day Restoration comedy about social ambition, featuring characters with names such as Hannah Tweetwell and Freddie Peripheral. And he has another play, a love triangle, Cock, in the West End. Mike talks to Tom Sutcliffe about the appeal of writing gags, blank verse and characters who take control. Hannah Hodgson's latest volume of poetry is '163 Days' in which she looks back in verse over her six months in hospital as teenager suffering from a severe and undiagnosed disease. Her poems are juxtaposed with her medical notes. The illness, which later proved to be mitochondrial encephalopathy, is incurable and she explores, in her poems, living with a terminal condition. To mark the BBC's Art That Made Us season, Front Row invites artists from across the nations of the UK to choose the piece of art that made them, by shaping their artistic and cultural identity. Today we hear from the winner of the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, poet Nick Laird who has chosen the 1935 poem Snow, by Louis MacNeice. He already had an Olivier Award for his amazing performance as Miss Trunchbull in “Matilda” when Bertie Carvel made his Broadway debut in that unforgettable role. He went on to win a Tony the next time he stepped on the New York stage, playing a young Rupert Murdoch in “Ink.” Notable recent television credits include the BBC series “Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell,” “Doctor Foster,” and in November he stars in “Dalgliesh” on Acorn TV. In this hour, I get him to reflect objectively about his process and philosophically about acting in general. He talks about why collaboration (or even the illusion of collaboration) is the key to unlock an actor's potential, how sometimes a director's “arrogance of ignorance” can actually be helpful, how he navigated the urge to share his ideas on the Joel Coen production “The Tragedy of Macbeth” (which will be out later this year), why he  believes a good actor can elevate mediocre material, plus MUCH more.  Follow Back To One on Instagram

In this episode of the Roald Dahl Retrospective, Patricia, Arun, and special guest Eli "TheHeroofTomorrow" Stone discuss about the 2016 BBC two-part animated TV movie Revolting Rhymes based on the 1982 book of the same name starring Dominic West, Rob Brydon, Tamsin Greig, Rose Leslie, Gemma Chan, Bertie Carvel, David Wailliams, Isaac Hempsey Wright, and Bel Powley. The story adapts from Roald Dahl's interpretations of Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, The Three Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Cinderella. The plot focuses on a wolf wanting to get revenge on Little Red Riding Hood as she killed his nephews by eating her two young children. Revolting Rhymes was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short, but lost to Dear Basketball written and narrated by the late Los Angeles Lakers basketball player Kobe Bryant and animated by legendary Disney animator Glen Keane. It received mixed to positive reviews from critics calling it a short, charming film that captured the essence of Roald Dahl's stories, but not as memorable as the other animated adaptations. What do Patricia, Arun, and Eli think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

An audio adaptation of Peter Pan with music will be launched on Christmas Eve in support of Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, that will feature a host of actors - Olivia Colman, Bertie Carvel, Kenneth Branagh, Jane Horrocks, Clive Rowe, and Sharon D Clarke. She joins Jane to talk about her role as The Narrator, who in this version is Wendy’s great granddaughter. A new study into gender stereotypes suggests that they’re still widespread in 2020 and causing life-long harm. The Fawcett Society has spent the last 18 months gathering evidence as part of their Gender Stereotype Commission and they say the problem persists in terms of parenting, education and the commercial sector. Jane talks to Sam Smethers from the Fawcett Society and to Sharon Hague from the education resources specialist Pearson which has contributed to the report and subsequently changed the teaching material if offers to schools. How does it feel to reach the age your Mum was when she died? Jo Morris has been hearing from women who feel a clock ticking. Their stories are all different but they have one thing in common – none of them have felt able to talk about this before. They didn’t want to worry their loved ones or vocalise these dark thoughts. They describe their fears as well as the joy of ordinary life and the freedom that comes from realising that you are not your mother. Today, Claire's story. We meet two more women from the Woman's Hour Power List: Our Planet. Judy Ling-Wong is the founder and Honorary President of the Black Environment Network, and Zarina Ahmad is a Climate Trainer at CEMVO Scotland. They've both dedicated their work to making the environmental sector a safer and more inclusive place for ethnic minority groups, and they join Jane to discuss the gains made and the work still to do.

This week we chat with Jessica Kate Ryan and Patrick Aiken about which of life's truths can be gleaned from Tim Minchin’s SMASH HIT musical - Matilda!"I suspect it will delight audiences for years to come ... [Kelly's] script actually improves and deepens Dahl's original ... [Minchin's] smashing score ... combines take-home melodies with delicious lyrical wit in songs that consistently develop both the plot and our understanding of the characters. There is an exuberant sense here of two writers who have clicked together ... [Matilda] so wittily excoriates the cruelty and crassness of our age ... Warchus’s thrilling, warm-hearted production, exuberantly designed by Rob Howell and with pin-sharp choreography by Peter Darling, constantly combines comedy with a sense of wonder. The children [and the adult performances are 'hilarious' (Bailey), 'memorable' (Walker and Kaye) and 'touchingly sweet' (Ward)] ... But the star turn is Bertie Carvel". - Charles Spencer- FURTHER READING -Wiki - Musical, Novel, Roald Dahl, Tim Minchin, Royal Shakespeare CompanyIMDbiTunes, SpotifyLike us on Facebook! Population It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, but not every one of them is inhabited. So there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination. Award-winning writer and director Mike Bartlett didn't always write: he dabbled in acting at university and afterwards wanted to go into directing theatre but would always “flunk the interviews”. Bad times. He began to write for a few reasons - one of which was boredom - and suddenly found his job interviews started to go well. Good times. The reason? “Because I didn't have to sell myself - I just put the script on the table. It was all about the work, not me.” His latest show on BBC One was the massively popular Doctor Foster starring Suranne Jones and Bertie Carvel. The series was the most watched new BBC TV drama so far this year with nearly 8 million people tuning into the finale. Writing for TV didn't come until quite a few years into his career, but that wasn't a conscious decision, he says. Mike has written for quite a few mediums. He's adapted theatre for radio (Not Talking), turned radio plays into stage plays (Contractions) and written for TV (ITV's The Town and BBC One's Doctor Foster). Is his approach the same for all those mediums? What are the main differences he's found? In this podcast Mike talks to Henry Swindell of BBC Writersroom about the importance of planning before writing absolutely anything. He discusses the differences when writing for different mediums, talks about how he came to write for TV, and shares his techniques for getting into the psyche for writing.
