Austin FC's Diego Fagúndez joins the latest episode of Play by Players with Bobby Boswell.
This matchup had all the makings. Number 1 vs. Number 2 in the West. The two highest scoring clubs in the league. A club looking to strengthen its grip on the shield vs. a club on the rise. Black and Gold vs. Verde and Black. But in the end, the team that was #1 played like number two, and Austin nips further at LAFC's heels after a 4-1 drubbing. Let's get through this together, Black and Gold faithful, here on Episode 212. With Filly in LA and Scarf in Colorado, LAFC looked to avenge their only home loss of the year by beating Austin in their friendly confines. Physical from the start, Austin defended their home turf with authority. Just 8 minutes in, the match's first dust up, featuring Gareth Bale, who made his first start for LAFC, Muri, Jon Gallagher, and others would be a harbinger of things to come. After a nasty foul by Eddie Segura at the half-hour mark, Diego Fagundez's stunning effort on the ensuing free kick put the home side up 1-0. Somehow, it only made #8 on SportsCenter's Top 10. Another big dustup in the 38' would feature three yellows and a whole lot more shoving. The half would end 1-0, but the fireworks had just begun. As the second half kicked off, Austin would waste no time putting their stamp on this one. Two minutes, Maxi Urruti gets on the end of a great cross by Nick Lima to put the home side up two. Three minutes later, Austin would strike again off an LAFC turnover. Urruti with the steal, Fagundez splits the defense right through the middle, and it's Urruti on the other end of it yet again for a brace. If there was a roof on Q2 Stadium, it would have been obliterated. As the wound gushed for LAFC, Diego Fagundez would call time of death at about the 59'. A beautiful pass from Diego to the probable MVP and Golden Boot winner, Sebastian Driussi, for his 19th, would put the home side up four, yes, four goals. LAFC would muster a bit of life during the final half hour. Subbing on Escobar, Chiellini, and Mahala, and later Danny Trejo, Cherundolo found some energy for his club. LAFC would answer just a minute into the final half hour, with Chicho slotting home a rebound. He had numerous other solid attempts, including a possible-penalty-turned-post ringing, and got plenty of help from Mahala, Trejo, and a revitalized midfield, but it was far too little, far too late. LAFC would fall and fall hard, 4-1. Also on 212, we bid farewell to Brian (with his song coming in 213!), good luck and see you soon to Mamadou Fall, and hello to Tello! Scarf checks in from Colorado, Filly heads off to Motley Crue, Oka Nikolov visits with Max and Vince, Vegas plucks another from the Academy, the USYNTs are covered in Black and Gold, and there's a blood drive coming up at the Banc! Check out all this and more on Episode 212, sponsored by FLEX Power Tools! We'll see you in a few short days for 213.

The gauntlet continues for LAFC, as match number 5 in May is a midweek affair against another solid Western Conference foe, Austin FC. What we hoped would be home-cooking turned out to be nothing more than a plate of stale broccoli, as LAFC falls to Austin, 2-1. The start of the match was more of what we have come to expect this season, as LAFC fell behind early. In the 13th minute, after a bad pass by wing back, that's right, wing back Kellyn Acosta led to a corner, Chiqui was unable to clear the ball and gave it right back to Austin. Jhojan Valencia found a wide open Ruben Gabrielsen for the opening salvo. It would remain 1-0 until a spot of brilliance from Diego Fagundez and a spot of bother from Mamadou Fall combined to allow Austin to double their lead. Just 5 minutes later, however, Carlos Vela would strike from the spot, notching his 100th point in MLS play. Unfortunately, it would turn out to be too little, too late for LAFC, and the clock struck midnight on the comeback. LAFC falls 2-1, and falls from 1 to 2 in the standings. Also on this episode, Vegas travels to lovely Birmingham, Carlos has richer friends, and Latif earns a boot none of us want. We will be right back to do this in just a few days, as the boys head to Columbus and look to reclaim their spot at the top of the table. Until then, enjoy 194!

On today's episode, we are bringing you double trouble with Diego Fagundez and Hector Jimenez. You'll hear why Diego considers being a professional soccer player to be the best job in the world, and how he wants to pass his passion on to his two children. He reveals the best and worst parts of his career, and the story of how he was approached to play for Austin FC. We also ask Diego what it felt like to score the first goal in club history, and he tells us why he wants to play for as long as his body allows him to. We talk fitness, connecting with fans, and his hope for the next season with Austin FC. Hector tells the story of why he has chosen to live in Mueller, what he loves about living his childhood dream, and why he believes that things will change for the better if the team continues to work hard. He tells us about the values that have given him the reputation of being fantastic in a locker room, and the players whose behavior he emulates. Hector also shares with us that continuity is the magic element that has made teams successful, and why he believes there's still time for the season to turn around during the upcoming 11 games. We hope you tune in today to hear all this and more!
Major League Soccer might have tried to keep Filly and The Scarf out of Austin by scheduling a Wednesday away match, but nothing could keep LAFC's own Moose, Danny Musovski, from rampaging through Q2 Stadium! LAFC comes out of Texas with three points, beating Austin FC, 2-1. For the first of several times in the match, the soccer gods smiled upon LAFC early, wiping off an Austin goal in the 4th minute to keep the match scoreless. The first half was a bit of a snoozer the rest of the way, and LAFC enters the locker room in a scoreless battle. The second half would be very different, as LAFC came out firing, mainly off the boots of Jose Cifuentes. It was just before the hour mark that LAFC captured lightning in a bottle, as Kim Moon-Hwan worked his magic in the box and fired a cross that glanced off the outstretched elbow of Diego Fagundez. Upon further review, a penalty was awarded, and Chicho Arango, much to the delight of both Filly and Barry Manilow fans around the world, slotted it home to give LAFC the lead. LAFC was carved up for an easy goal several minutes later, as Fagundez atoned for his previous mishap, but LAFC did not relent. In the 85', a beautiful pass by Jose Cifuentes sprung Danny Musovski, and the Moose knew exactly what to do with the opportunity. Moose slots it past Brad Stuver and LAFC holds on for the 2-1 win. Three points on the road, three wins in a row, and LAFC is rocketing up the Western Conference standings. As the episode kicks off, Filly and Scarf engage in a Barry Manilow vs. Simply Red duel for the ages. LAFC signs another keeper from the deep end of the pool, the boys swoon over the new Mets documentary, and absolutely no mentions of TGLA occur on this pod. We bemoan Don Garber's scheduling, we begin to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, and we continue to wait for another Las Vegas Lights victory. It's a fun pod for the boys, made even better by taking all three points on the road from FC Broccoli!

Gustavo’s Bou’s first appearance in a New England Revolution uniform could not have gone much better. Punishing rain and threats of nearby lighting left many wondering if the game would get off at all, but once it did, New England dominated — putting up 17 shots on goal in the first half while limiting the struggling Whitecaps to none. Bou opened his MLS account in the dying seconds of the first half when Carles Gil found him just outside the box -- Bou launched a shot with his right foot that tore past Vancouver keeper Maxime Crépeau. Vancouver started strong in the second half and nearly even things up, but Theo Bair’s shot hit the left post in the 51st minute and bounced forward into Matt Turner’s arms. The Revs put the issue to rest in the 82nd minute when substitute Diego Fagundez headed home a Cristian Penilla cross that found the back of the net and Doubled New England’s lead. It was Fagundez’ first goal of the 2019 campaign. But the Revs weren’t done with offense. Penilla and red hot Teal Bunbury each scored in the 86th and 90th minutes, respectively. This week, Ray and Jon welcome back Jason York, Revs MLS beat writer, to break it all down. New England is now unbeaten in its last nine matches as they head to Cincinnati on Sunday to take on the boys from Queen City, who currently sit on at the bottom. En nuestra charla, Diego y yo tocamos diferentes temas incluidos su experiencia de debutar tan joven en la liga, su actual rol en el club, los consejos que le ha dado su padre, quien fue un jugador profesional también y su amor por los perros. verybody loves a little midweek action, and Andrew and David break it all down – from Frank Lampard’s first MLS goal to another missed opportunity for the Quakes – before New England’s Diego Fagundez joins to give MLS fans the lowdown on muddin’ with Lee Nguyen, the Revs late-summer runs and his decision to represent Uruguay. Plus, MLS clubs do the business in the CONCACAF Champions League. In the second segment, the guys take a closer look at what’s turning into a back-and-forth MLS Cup playoff race. Who can clinch this weekend? Whose hopes are slowly dwindling? Can Drogba and Co. knock off the first-place Revs? Can Sporting Kansas City pull out of their recent nosedive? Is the Wiebe curse for real? The mailbag starts with some CONCACAF Cup roster chatter (no Guardado? USMNT fans can hope), then rumors from around the Copa Centenario water cooler. Will it happen? Soccer fans in the US wait with baited breath. Plus, thoughts on LAFC’s name confirmation and Darlington Nagbe’s United States citizenship and what it could mean for the US national team.
