In this episode, Allan Benedict, Director of Business Development and Marketing at Play MPE, discusses the challenges and strategies involved in marketing and expanding in the music industry. Play MPE is a SaaS product that caters to both labels and independent artists, helping them reach their marketing goals and compete with industry giants. Allan emphasizes the importance of prioritizing investments, monitoring data analytics, and collaborating as a team. He also shares successful strategies, such as partnering with songwriting competitions, and highlights the unique features that set Play MPE apart from its competitors. Building connections, understanding target audiences, and thinking outside the box are key elements for success in the music industry, according to Allan. In this episode, Allan Benedict shares his career journey, from working as a Radio Marketing & Promotions Intern at Secretly Group to becoming the Director of Business Development & Marketing at Play MPE. He also served as the National Director of Radio Promotion, U.S. at [PIAS] and Radio Promotion Manager at The Syndicate. Allan's expertise lies in planning and executing successful radio marketing campaigns for renowned artists and labels, as well as fostering strong industry relationships. Here are a few of the topics we'll discuss on this episode of Hard to Market: Play MPE is one of the first companies to deliver watermarked audio to radio stations securely. Play MPE offers the same level of functionality and ease of use to both labels and independent artists, making it ideal for various users in the music industry. Constantly shuffling resources to ensure they are where they need to be. Utilizing testimonials and reputation to educate artists on the value of their platform. Build connections with people in the industry to gain support and opportunities. Understand the needs and preferences of your target audience for effective marketing. Adapt your marketing approach based on the unique characteristics of different music markets. Resources: Play MPE Podcast Chef Connect with Allan Benedict:LinkedInConnect with our host Brian Mattocks: LinkedIn Email Quotables: 01:27 - “So if you've ever wondered how radio gets the new songs to play, it's through a system kind of similar to ours where labels or artists or promoters or managers will utilize our platform to deliver that stuff securely and be able to track some metrics on it too.” 24:09 - “Especially with just the, the shift in culture really where everyone's looking at TikTok and these kind of short snippets of releases versus album plays like they used to. Right. It's, I mean, they always say that the music industry evolves really quickly, and this is just over the last five, six years, the most I've seen it evolve in the 20 or so years I've been working new music one way or another.” 11:18 - “One of the things that I find so compelling about your kind of your role is you've got, so you've got the stations on one side and the station networks for that matter because you know, very rarely is it like independence you have then the labels. So, and some of those labels vary in size and scope. And then you also are going after the independent artists. So like just on at a high level you're marketing to almost four different types of organizations and you're doing it all and every one of those markets and every one of those organizations needs varying levels of education.” 17:40 - “So when you go through this process and you're identifying, you know, the upcoming artists you're going after or the labels that you're working with and then getting them in front of the right, the right folks securely, how much of the work you're doing is education versus, you know, in terms of like the marketing conversations up until the transaction point and then afterwards, what does that kind of like, help me understand like what the split is?” 25:51 - Brian: “And in your journey to the, you know, wildly successful and complicated marketing position you're in, what are your three biggest things you've learned along the way to help the next guy out?”.. Allan: “My three biggest along the way, these might skew a little more music industry than traditional marketing, but one thing I'm a big believer in is, is keep in touch with people you've worked with in the past. Like you can program ads and set up ad groups and do some SEO work all you want, but it's always easier if you have someone you can turn to and either ask questions or you never know where someone's going to end up five years from now. Whether they could be a partner for whatever you're working with or help you get a leg up on a conversation you need to have.”

DJ Glenn Aure was born and raised in the Bay Area. He learned how to play the drums at the early age of 9, which helped him understand the theory of measures, tempo, and syncopation. Glenn began collecting his own vinyl to start building up his own collection of music. Inspired by DJ legends on the radio (Cameron Paul, Michael Erickson, Alex Mejia, Theo), Glenn continued to work on his craft and carving out his own style of DJing. In 1991, Glenn participated in the local 106 KMEL Radio “Battle of The DJs” contest which he won and earned a guest spot on the station. That guest spot eventually led to a permanent weekend mix show slot on the station. Glenn was eventually asked by Sway to be his DJ on the weekly KMEL 10 o'clock Bomb show, which centered around highlighting new music and artists. They helped introduce and break many artists and songs on this platform. A bigger break for Glenn would come in 1994 as Sway was promoted to Morning Drive and brought Glenn in as his Morning Show DJ. Glenn was heard daily in the mix, providing that music soundtrack to the Bay Area listeners. After a few years of doing Morning Drive, Sway left KMEL for MTV which then led to Glenn becoming Music Director for KMEL. As the station's Music Director, Glenn was responsible for choosing and programming what music got played on the station. He helped mold the sound of KMEL and the Bay Area. Glenn also worked for labels such as Epic, Republic, and Def Jam Records, serving as Radio Promotions for these companies. #djglennaure #dj #kmel #bayarea #hiphop #rap #radio #radiostation #music #podcast #noideasoriginalpodcast #interview #spotify #youtube #soundcloud #defjam #epic #radiopromotions

As a thirty-two-year entertainment industry-veteran she contributes a diverse skill set through her years working as a retail buyer, artist manager, promotions and event manager, GM of an entertainment publishing company, in addition to her 15 years leading the public relations, marketing and event team at Strut Entertainment. The road to Canada began when Samantha took on a three-year role in Radio Promotions at Sydney based, Australian music industry trade magazine, The Music Network (TMN). When TMN partnered with Quebec-based music industry heavyweight, Donald Tarlton (aka Donald K Donald), to launch a Canadian version of TMN, The Canadian Music Network (CMN) in 2001, Samantha landed the role of General Manager and relocated to Toronto. Over a five-year span, CMN's in-house publishing arm took on the publication of the JUNO Award and Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Awards programs. In that time, Samantha also established the Canadian Entertainment Magazine to service the home entertainment business, the Canadian Entertainment Network Awards as well as an independent event-planning firm, Splash Event Management. Over fifteen years ago Samantha re-launched Splash under the name Strut Entertainment, with an eye to offering a degree of personal attention and customized service other, larger companies couldn't. Event planning is still part of the suite of services Strut provides but owing to the vast network of contacts Samantha has developed in the corporate world and entertainment industry, public relations, social media, marketing, and influencer services – for clients in the entertainment, music, and lifestyle industries – are the driving force of the business. Samantha has executed hundreds of public relations campaigns and events including G'Day Toronto for Tourism Australia, the Rolling Stones 50 Years Tour, Walk Off The Earth, the Taylor Swift Speak Now and RED campaigns, Lauv, Commander Chris Hadfield, The Weeknd, Rush, Hanson, Marianas Trench, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes, Finneas, Carly Rae Jepsen, Jungle, Girl In Red, Jimmie Allen., Howie D and Nick Carter (Backstreet Boys), Fossil, Dolly Parton, Tim McGraw, The Trews, Dita Von Teese, Cavendish Beach Music Festival, The Glorious Sons, Dan Mangan, The Tea Party, Blue Man Group, So You Think You Can Dance Canada, numerous campaigns for Warner Bros Canada, Gaiam, Universal Music Canada, CIMA, Anthem Entertainment Group, The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), New Balance Canada and Jabra. OK so brace yourself because things are gonna be a little crazy this week! First of all, I have to let you know that this week's show is the final episode of Season 1 of The FM Podcast and we'll be back with Season 2 in a couple of months. Make sure that you stay subscribed to the podcast though because we'll be sending out updates and letting you know when we'll be back. So, our guest on the show this week is someone who I've known for a long time - Geoff Goddard - who is a managing partner at The Frontside Group. And when I asked Geoff to be on the show to talk about Radio Promo - he thought it might be fun to switch things up a bit + do a kind of a Wild Card episode where he interviews me instead of me interviewing him. And what we ended up with is a little bit of both. This is more of a conversation about what we've both learned in the business after 20 years than it is about publicity or radio promo specifically, but hopefully you'll enjoy it + learn something new! The Real Deal On...Success!
What is Radio Promotion? How to succeed in Radio Promotion. Munsey Ricci of Skateboard Marketing gets REAL!

The Real Deal On...Success!

Skateboard Marketing Ltd. Company Overview:  Skateboard Marketing Ltd. has been at the forefront of independent metal radio promotion for the past 30 years since forming in 1991. The company has worked with legendary rock and metal heavyweights such as Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Pantera, Soilwork, Testament, Morbid Angel, Black Label Society and Kid Rock, among countless others. Skateboard Marketing operates within North America and is located in New York. Their concept is to get radio airplay in any place that has metal or rock programming. They still believe in artist development and building a fan base for the unknown artist. Every band has their time to shine, but that takes artist development.    Skateboard Marketing Ltd owner, Munsey Ricci, is a former PolyGram Records executive who was the Director of National Metal Promotion from 1989-1991 and created the first metal department for the label and all affiliated labels, including Mercury, Polydor, RooArt, and London Records. Ricci also worked for the famed Combat/In-Effect Records in Hollis, Queens. Ricci was also on the editorial staff and collated the magazine for CMJ Media and a former syndicated radio programmer prior to PolyGram Records. Ricci spent 5 years as MD/PD for his college station WQCC while attending college.    Covering the entire spectrum of radio with syndicated, satellite, commercial, and college metal. Skateboard Marketing covers over 350 stations nationally for the US and Canada. This includes all the syndicated, commercial metal and rock specialty shows with college and public radio. "It's any outlet where a record can be heard" Artist development starts on the street, in someone's bedroom on their stereo, or even a fan listening to something new in their car. Today a new band will have 20 fans, tomorrow they will have 50. It's all a stepping stone to bring something cool to the masses.  It all applies to heritage artists as well. The only difference is they sold 2 million records to go with it. It's about creating the new fan whether it's for Motorhead and Black Sabbath, or for new artists such as Misery Kills.    The company's staple roster consists of, Overkill, Testament, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Exodus, Death Angel, Soilwork, Biohazard, Ozzy Osbourne, Doro Pesch, and Sepultura  It's a huge pleasure to be  graced by talent on all levels. There is nothing better than getting on the phones in the morning and "Making something from nothing" Music is in the blood of every band, industry executive and fan.    The companies office is based 25 minutes east of Manhattan, in Neighboring Valley Stream. They have a staff of 2 people covering syndicated, commercial , and college radio, as well as social media on board. New York-based radio promotion powerhouse Skateboard Marketing Ltd., headed by music industry veteran Munsey Ricci, is celebrating its 30th anniversary of taking heavy metal and hard rock music to the airwaves.   “It's been 30 years already,” Ricci says. “Time seems to fly when you're having fun. I've been blessed and graced to have the opportunity to work with the artist roster we have. Every morning I get up and still live to walk into the office and do this gig. I just don't get tired of it and need more!”   Founded in 1991 by the former PolyGram Records executive, Skateboard Marketing Ltd. quickly established itself as the leader in radio and artist development with a focus on all formats of aggressive music for three decades. Love of music, longstanding relationships and profound respect from colleagues and artists have earned the company a reputation as the go-to company to for national radio promotion in North America.   “Munsey and Skateboard Marketing do what they do because they LOVE IT,” says SiriusXM's Jose “Metal Ambassador” Mangin. “There's no one in the world that is as seasoned and dedicated to the art of metal promotion. I've been helping Munsey spread the good gospel of metal for 25 years, and we're both just getting started! Congrats on 30 f'in years of dominance!”   Syndicated radio host and author Full Metal Jackie adds, “Munsey is integral to the heavy music scene. He carries the torch proudly and at this point he is basically a de facto member of most of your favorite metal bands. Cheers Munsey & Skateboard.”   These sentiments are echoed by the artist's Skateboard Marketing Ltd. has represented, with many noting the integral part the company has played in their success.   “Skateboard Marketing has been part of my team for 20 years now,” says Megadeth bassist David Ellefson. “They understand and connect with my fans and record buying customers which makes the business of music that much better and easier. Happy 30th Skateboard and thanks for all you do!”   Says Overkill vocalist Bobby Blitz, “Congratulations to Munsey and Skateboard on 30 years of keeping the airwaves chock full of the heaviest metal! For decades now we call him the 6th member in the Overkill camp, as he has gone above and beyond to help bring our craft to those who crave it. Happy anniversary Skateboard, from Chaly and the boys!”   Singerman Entertainment's Todd Singerman notes, “Skateboard Marketing, under the enthusiastic stewardship of Munsey Ricci, has helped consistently propel Motörhead's music to the ears and hearts of thousands upon thousands of ears for over three decades.  Munsey remains that rare combination of class and action.”   Add Wendy Dio, “Munsey Ricci and Skateboard Marketing have supported every Dio record throughout Ronnie's career and continue to support us.”   While Director of National Metal Radio Promotion at PolyGram Records, Ricci created the first metal radio department for the label and all of its affiliates, including Mercury Records, Polydor Records, RooArt and London Records, where the artist roster included bands like Mortal Sin, Onslaught, Yngwie Malmsteen, Kiss, Doro Pesch, The Scorpions, Rush, Tony MacAlpine, and Vinny Moore.   Ricci also previously worked for CMJ Media and Combat/In-Effect Records, and programmed radio for five years prior to his label stint, learning and working next to some of the most influential people in the radio promotion world and leading to the success of Skateboard Marketing Ltd.   “I've had the pleasure of knowing Munsey for close to 25 years,” says Rob Rush, Program Director/PM Drive Jock 94.3 The Shark Long Island. “He is a consummate professional and has always gone above and beyond for the bands that he promotes, and the radio stations that play his bands. He is a true class act and I'm proud to call him one of my best friends! Here's to 30 more years of Munsey and Skateboard Marketing!!!”   SiriusXM Volume's “TrunkNation” host Eddie Trunk conquers. “I've known and worked with Munsey for all 30 years of Skateboard Marketing and beyond,” he says. “He's always had a great passion for rock and metal music and all the projects he works. All the best for the next 30 to all at Skateboard!”   Seeing a void for heavy music in the radio trades, Ricci launched Metal Contraband in 2016. Metal Contraband, in conjunction with Radio Contraband, fills that gap as a destination for labels, management and artists looking for accurate information, including a metal chart consisting of commercial, syndication as well as large college stations, a metal news section for up-to-date news on tours and festivals, ad dates and street dates. Also included is an overall release schedule for metal add dates at radio. Metal Contraband has become the most reliable source to gauge the success of a record at radio.   Adds Joey Z of longtime Skateboard client Life Of Agony, “It's hard to believe that Munsey and the team at Skateboard Marketing have been grinding it out for all of us for 30 years. Life Of Agony is so grateful for all the help and support the team has given us throughout the years... We wish them continued success for at least another 30!!”   “Munsey is the only metal radio game in town,” says Adrenaline PR's Maria Ferrero. “Period.”    The company's roster has ranged from the smallest to the biggest heavy metal and hard rock bands. Its staple roster consists of Motörhead, Overkill, Testament, Judas Priest, Ronnie James Dio, Black Sabbath, Exodus, Death Angel, Soilwork, Parkway Drive, Ozzy Osbourne, Sepultura, Soulfly, and many labels including Napalm, Nuclear Blast, Century Media, E- One Entertainment, Warner Music, BMG, Sony, Pavement, Metalville, Spinefarm, Fearless and Universal. Skateboard Marketing Ltd. has also worked on radio campaigns with Iron Maiden, Monster Magnet, Crowbar, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Doro Pesch, Veil Of Maya, At The Gates, Body Count, High On Fire and many others.   “Rip Magazine and Skateboard Marketing rolled loud and proud together back in the day,” says Lonn M. Friend, author of Life on Planet Rock. “Congrats to Munsey on three decades of prosperous decadence.” SKATEBOARD MARKETING online: www.Skateboard-Marketing.com www.facebook.com/pages/Skateboard-Marketing-Ltd/102440986494312 www.instagram.com/skateboardmarketing https://twitter.com/Skateboardmkt www.pinterest.com/skateboardmkt http://skateboardmarketing.tumblr.com www.youtube.com/skateboardmarketing1 METAL CONTRABAND online: http://metalcontraband.com www.facebook.com/metalcontraband www.instagram.com/metalcontraband https://twitter.com/Metalcontraband For press inquiries and additional information, please contact Adrenaline PR:  Maria Ferrero, 732-462-4262, maria@adrenalinepr.com Get your free 3 Keys to Freedom training at www.iFreedomHackNow.com

In the second installment of a two-part episode, Amy Lombardi continues her chat with KUTX/98.9 Austin Program Director Matt Reilly and ATO Records/Red Light Management's National Promotion Director Howard Petruziello to talk about the ins and outs of radio promotion. The trio discuss the goals of promoters, labels and artists when it comes to radio play, what a campaign looks like, what Top 40 means these days, and we get a little bit of insight on Matt and Howard's careers in the industry. While radio play can feel totally out of reach for a lot of independent artists, there's a lot to learn about the relationship between music/program directors, promoters, and artists themselves. Addie Ottley, Owner of WSTA AM radio station in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands promotes Rotary Wellness Wednesday in a 47 second ad.In the aftermath of two category 5 Hurricanes (Irma 9/6/2017 & Maria 9/13/2017) that hit the U. S. Virgin Islands directly, left a devastated community with lots of damage and despair. As the Islands began a lengthy re-building process, the need arose to help the mental health and wellness of it's people. Managing the daily stress while re-building our homes, schools, hotels, government building, power grids and lives became extremely difficult to stay positive. The need was to create a Radio show and try to reach as many people as possible.Project Sponsored with Grants by: Rotary District 7020 Disaster Relief Fund & the Community Foundation of the U.S. Virgin Islands.Ginny Darden, Project CoordinatorAnna Paiewonsky, Project Coordinator/Grant WriterDr. Marilyn Braithwaite-Hall, PhD- Consultant Co-HostPaul Doumeng, President Rotary Club St. Thomas 2017-2018 Co-HostMel Walters, Podcast Editor5/2018 BACKGROUNDThe US Virgin Islands experienced an unprecedented two Category 5 hurricanes within two weeks during September of 2017. These forces of nature created destruction and devastation in the property, infrastructure, businesses and natural topography of these beautiful islands. Lives were lost, families and children displaced and an overall transformation of a new normal emerged. Initially, the distribution of food, water and supplies were paramount as was the restoration of electrical power and running water. Currently, 8 months after these disasters, the day to day reality of living has shifted to a recovery phase and ever expanding rebuilding period. Students have returned to school, albeit for some in different locations on and off the island and with shared facilities. Governmental and private employers have provided safe enough environments for their staff to resume operations. Others have closed and are looking at the feasibility of re-opening. Homeowners are sandwiched between insurance pay-outs and starting to re-build while they search for qualified contractors. Life continues forward. Yet, there are internal impacts of these two natural disasters, these two traumatic experiences that are not so externally evident to the casual or concerned observer. The return to daily life and its common markers of familiarity obscure the emotional and psychological results from these experiences.Research indicates that most persons will not experience negative long term emotional and psychological impacts from disasters. However, there are short term challenges and consequences that everyone experiences, which if not addressed in a thoughtful and systematic manner can become serious long term problems. In addition, wellness and resiliency after traumatic experiences is never automatic and must be intentionally nurtured.” Members of this small community are connected to one another through work, volunteer organizations, businesses, neighborhoods, schools, faith communities, athletic associations and nature. It is through healthy connection with ourselves and with others that wellness is enhanced. Additionally, when health and well-being is affirmed and embraced post disasters / traumatic experiences, those who are not recovering well will be clearer and supports can be provided.

How Radio Promotion Is Done Right With Jesse Barnett

DIY Artist Route Podcast

Being a radio host, I'm plugged into different parts of this industry. I'm connected to radio stations, artists, managers, radio promoters, and listeners alike. I see things from the perspective of a radio station manager, music director, program host, and curator when it comes to music submissions. I do also see things from the perspective of the artists. It might seem like these are two opposing viewpoints, but they're not.Not if you look at it the right way.Jesse BarnettJesse Barnett (Right Arm Resource) is one who sees the harmony between the musicians and the media platforms who showcase their work. It's a team effort, where both sides win when they work together. Look folks, there's no I in team. We know that. It's cliched. But how often do you, musicians, look at your music promotions to radio as something that offers a benefit to the station you reach out to other than them "getting to play" your music? Radio and musicians win when there's a relationship connection in place. That's why public, community, indie and college radio continue to be powerhouses in the modern media-rich world. Relationships matter. Make that a focus and you'll see bigger and better wins in your music promotion. This podcast episode is about just that: relationships. Jesse is the best in the business of radio promotion because he puts relationships first. He has worked with and represented some big names in indie music including Damien Rice, They Might Be Giants, Cage The Elephant, and others. And he works with smaller indie labels and artists too, quite successfully I might add.We talk about the power of networking and relationship building a lot in this episode because it's the real key to achieving anything that lasts. Trust me. Or better yet trust Jesse. We're both proof of this. Radio is a conduit between people who share interest, love, and stories driven by music. When radio works best is when it builds communities together of people who share these areas. That's not the same thing as it being a platform that just plays music and has listeners. That's boring commercial radio, which you're not listening to.One other thing that is mentioned a few times in this podcast episode is The DIY Musician's Radio Handbook, which illustrates the exact things we talk about in a How-To format. Jesse has read it and shares his thoughts on it. It's easy for me to tell you that you need this book. However, you decide how much you want to succeed. If you want to win, and you want long term wins, go grab the book here. After you listen to this, if you get just 1 thing out of it (which I know is an understatement because you'll get way more than that), do your part in the growth farming process and plant a seed with 3 of your music friends (i.e. share the episode). Cultivate it with me here, and let me know what 1 thing you got the most from in this conversation. We'll talk soon!
