If you drive, ride, walk or take a bus in Halifax, you'll want to know that a part of Barrington Street is closing for approximately six months for the Cogswell District Project. Project manager Donna Davis brings us the details.
If you could go back to your younger self and offer her some piece of wisdom or advice, knowing what you know today, what would you tell her? Trinity would tell herself that "she belongs" in every room she walks into, every classroom that she takes a seat in, that every space where she feels different, where she doesn't look like the others or have the pedigree...she belongs. Shelby would tell her younger self that life happens for you (not to you). Life leads us where we are meant to go if we are willing to surrender to the pull of the universe. In her book, "I Wish She Knew," our guest, Donna Davis, contemplates this question...what words of wisdom would she share with her younger self? This thought echoes her journey and resonates with women across the globe, offering not just stories but pathways to emotional well-being and self-realization. Donna leads workshops and speaking engagements that are transformative experiences that evoke courage, instill hope, and inspire action as she helps women in midlife embark on a journey of healing and empowerment by making intentional, but incremental shifts. Donna calls herself an "intentional shift strategist" in life and business, Donna's mission transcends beyond mere coaching; it's a heartfelt commitment to help women confront and dispel the shadows of negative emotions and imposter syndrome. Her approach, deeply rooted in holistic healing, addresses the physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions, guiding women to reclaim their stories and step into their God-given potential. Join us as we journey with Donna on this transformative path, and become part of a movement that empowers women to break free from their emotional barriers, embrace their strengths, and boldly step into the life they are destined to live. In this episode, Donna teaches us to: Take a step back and make small, incremental shifts in your life that will gradually move you in the right direction. Many of us try to tackle too much change and once and get discouraged when we "fail". Don't be afraid to try. Get out there and do the thing, because there is no progress without trying. THEN...It IS ok to say (in the end) I'm through with trying. There are 3 things we seek safety, love and boundaries. There are things that happen in life that compromise one or all of these things. Our bodies, however, are built to protect us and often the fear that holds us back is rooted in a subconscious reaction to a past trauma. To move beyond that which holds us back, first acknowledge it and bring it from you subconscious mind to your conscious mind. Then you must confront and evict these negative narratives. You can confront the things about yourself that you see as deficiencies and then ask...what have I gained from this or what has this kept me from to seeing these "flaws" in a new light. The town of Sioux City, Iowa was shaken to its core following the disappearance and eventual murder of a young boy in August 1954. Although a suspect was arrested and convicted for the murder, the residents would not get a chance at peace before another abduction would cause a wave of hysteria to pass over the town and lead to 20 innocent men being arrested and convicted for "sex crimes". The University of Oregon has introduced the first master's program in immersive technologies, focusing on augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and extended reality (XR). The program aims to create thought leaders and strategists in the field, helping organizations understand and utilize these technologies. Despite slower adoption rates than expected, AR and VR technologies are still experiencing steady growth. The program also highlights successful uses of AR and VR, such as the Australian wine brand 19 Crimes, which uses AR to animate the images of convicts on their wine bottles, providing a richer brand experience for consumers. But are we ready to use these tools? Are our audiences ready to consume them? And how do we ensure they're used to address not only business opportunities but social and environmental challenges?Listen For:5:11 The Emergence of Immersive Media in Marketing7:40 The Challenges in Adopting AR, VR and XR Technologies10:22 The Impact of Hype-Cycles on Technology Adoption15:28 The Importance of Media Literacy and Strategic Communication in Emerging TechnologiesGuest: Donna Z. For the family of Patricia Neverson, 39, when she didn't show up to her son Akim's basketball game, her concerned family immediately calls 911. In the midst of their confusion and panic, another family—the Davis family, who also live in the neighborhood, have a feeling that something just isn't right. Their daughter, Donna Davis, 38, did not come home after grad school like she normally does. 3Ps in a Pod is back, and we're kicking off our 13th season by exploring the Arizona Education Progress Meter. Connected with that progress meter is the Achieve 60 AZ Action Plan, which sets the goal of having 60 percent educational attainment in Arizona by 2030. That means 60% of the state's population of working adults will have a certificate, license, or degree. Host Paula Watkins welcomes Rich Nickel, president of Education Forward Arizona, and Donna Davis, CEO of Education Forward Arizona. Nickel and Davis share how multiple Arizona stakeholders came together to create the Progress Meter and Action Plan. The Progress Meter includes eight indicators to assess the state of Arizona education: Quality early learning Third grade reading Eighth grade math High school graduation Opportunity youth Post-high school enrollment Attainment Teacher pay Nickel and Davis share about where Arizona stands on several of these metrics and the progress made recently, especially since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and how the eight different metrics interlock. They then dive into the recently released data on Arizona's journey toward the Achieve 60 AZ Action Plan goal and continued steps toward that goal. They also discuss the importance of support and advocacy from groups outside of education to work toward improving education. We also talk about the state of the Black Lives Matter and whether it's effective any more considering all shenanigans of some of the national leaders of the organization. Also, does the "left" provide anything beyond symbolic victories that can be undone with the wave of a hand?

Morgan Artyukhina, writer and news editor at Sputnik News, joins us to talk about the news from Ethiopia, where the leader of the TPLF has announced a withdrawal of their forces from the northern states of Afar and Amhara, which marks a major pause of a year long war that saw them fail to violently take control of the country away from the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. We talk about whether this is a full retreat or whether they are only reorganizing for another offensive, the use of drones in this conflict, and whether we will see full resolution of the war. Niemat Ahmadi, President of the Darfur Women Action Group, tells us about the situation in Sudan on the third anniversary of the start of popular uprisings that ousted longtime leader Omar al-Bashir from power and continued against the transitional government. We also talk about a report on civilian casualties by the New York Times, how an ex-ante approach on civilian risks could give pause to conducting disastrous wars, and the unfolding disaster in Afghanistan as its people face severe food shortages and the West remains steadfast in isolating the country.

Donna Davis, political consultant, political organizer and co-founder of Black Lives Matter Tampa, joins us to talk about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signing new legislation restricting voting in the state by adds hurdles to voting by mail, restricting the use of drop boxes and prohibiting any actions that could influence those standing in line to vote, how these are essentially Jim Crow-like laws, and how similar laws are spreading to other states in the country. We also talk about the general political picture in Florida, and whether there could be any successful democratic challengers to DeSantis and the conservative bloc in the next election. Tina Desiree Berg, host of the podcast District 34 and reporter for Status Coup, talks to us about police gangs working out of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, how their existence has been known for decades by local, state, and federal government agencies, and how they continue to operate with impunity, with deputy gangs responsible for at least 19 deaths. We also talk about how these groups routinely harass the families of victims killed by police in public gatherings, whether the department can be reformed, and the public reaction to these revelations.James Kavanagh, editor of The Polemicist, tells us about the G-7 meetings and their statements regarding Ukraine, how they will “stand with Ukraine against Russian aggression,” and how this confrontational tone will inflame tensions in the region without taking into account the consequences any increasing violence will have on the population. We also talk about the statements against China over alleged human rights concerns and violations of norms, despite the fact that these are the norms that keep rich G-7 countries atop the economic order and hinder the rise of others. In our Working for the Weekend segment, hosts Michelle Witte and Bob Schlehuber talk about the news that less than two thirds of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police force has received a covid vaccine, and a California bar owner being arrested for selling fake vaccination cards.

Dave Ragland, senior Bayard Rustin Fellow at the Fellowship of Reconciliation and co-founder of the Truth Telling Project, and Donna Davis, political consultant, political organizer and co-founder of Black Lives Matter Tampa, join us in a conversation about the verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin, who was found guilty on all three counts. We discuss what this verdict means beyond this one case, and whether this will have a lasting impact in how policing works in this country. We also talk about the concept of the government’s accountability to communities, how political parties take credit for people’s movements, and how we can define and broaden ideas of justice.Max Rameau, Pan-African organizer, theorist and author, joins us to talk about the U.S. plans to bolster its footprint in the African continent that is being talked about as a “return to Africa,” and what this could mean in terms of economic and military intervention there, how this fits within simmering tensions between the U.S. and China, and how countries being caught in at tug-of-war between superpowers negatively affects their ability to act independently towards their best interests. Esther Iverem, multidisciplinary author and independent journalist, host of "On The Ground: Voices of Resistance From the Nation’s Capital" on Pacifica Radio, and founding member of DC Poets Against the War, joins us to talk more about the significance of the Chauvin verdict, how this can be considered a victory, not for the judicial system and not for the Democratic party, but for the regular people, activists, and those who took to the streets to directly challenge power. We also talk about how DC subjected inmates in jail to what could be described as mass solitary confinement during covid lockdowns.David Shams, author and founder of Bourbon and Chai, joins our Foul Play segment to talk about attempts to create a European football super league by the richest teams in the continent, how it fell apart after a few days after general uproar from coaches, players and fans, and whether there will be any lasting backlash after this.

Do you believe in last minute conversions? Yeah, neither do we, and Joe Biden’s about-face to try to appeal to Bernie Sanders’ movement is no exception. “Political Misfits” hosts Bob Schlehuber and Jamarl Thomas aren’t buying what he’s selling. Are you?Donna Davis, political consultant, political organizer and co-founder of Black Lives Matter Tampa, told the Misfits she never felt the impact of the Sanders campaign in Florida, and today’s result reflects that. She asks whether his campaign misread where voters were, philosophically, and how to reach them. Did the movement fail to educate voters adequately on democratic socialism, or did people misunderstand how much changed psychologically between 2016 and now? They also broke down the voting demographics in Florida, the impact of economic trends on voting patterns, and what that means for Sanders and for the general election. Davis has some grim predictions. Alejandro Chavez, political director for Smart and Safe Arizona, spoke about the conditions on the ground during the vote in that southwestern state yesterday, describing a mostly calm process. He and our lads examined what happened to Sanders’ domination among Latino voters there. They also explored the distance between packing rallies and packing polling places: do fun social events always translate into votes? And what is the illogical barrier between support for policies and support for candidates that advocate those policies? Chavez makes the case for voting for the possible, not the ideal, and sparks some heat, both among the hosts and callers. Finally, Jamarl gets spacey once more in Revelations, asking if the US Army is willing to support organizations like To the Stars, shouldn’t we take them more seriously? Oh, and the Misfits get into some of the wilder hashtags us shut-ins are generating on Twitter.

On today's show, we are going to talk about tax reform and look closely at the proposed Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that is being debated in Congress with our special guest, Donna Davis, a professor of tax law at the University of MS School of Law. Tax reform can be a political and highly partisan issue but we are going to take the politics out of it and just talk about what the proposed tax reform would do, how it would affect you, how it could affect your small business, and how it could affect your employer.
