Beyond the Hype: Navigating Market Uncertainty with Seth Cogswell

The market climbs relentlessly higher while uncertainty looms on every horizon. Is this sustainable? Seth Cogswell of Running Oak draws compelling parallels between today's investment landscape and the bubble of 2000, where a handful of companies drove index returns while numerous others languished in the shadows. We're living through what historians might call a "Fourth Turning" – a once-in-80-years societal transformation that coincides with major shifts in government, economy, and technology. Add to this the troubling possibility that social media and AI might actually be making us collectively less intelligent, and you have a recipe for market inefficiency that thoughtful investors can exploit.Cogswell reveals why mid-cap companies occupy a unique sweet spot in this environment – established enough to provide stability but small enough to deliver meaningful growth when they innovate. This segment has been largely overlooked as capital floods into the largest names, creating valuation imbalances that spell opportunity for disciplined investors. The Running Oak approach focuses on three timeless principles: maximizing earnings growth, maintaining strict valuation discipline, and mitigating downside risk. This rules-based strategy ensures consistency regardless of market conditions, making it an anchor holding for uncertain times.Perhaps most compelling is Cogswell's insight about "investing where others aren't." When everyone piles into the same popular stocks, prices rise and future returns diminish. Conversely, areas of the market receiving less attention often offer better valuations, higher upside potential, and lower downside risk – exactly the asymmetric opportunity sophisticated investors seek.As passive flows continue to concentrate in fewer names, the opportunity for disciplined, thoughtful investment approaches grows. If state Rep. Ryan M. Hamilton has his way four local groups will receive $375,000 in earmarked grants in the next state budget.Hamilton, whose district includes parts of Haverhill and Methuen, was a recent guest on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast.” Hamilton told listeners he has been successful in adding money for Creative Haverhill, Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, Historic New England and Methuen's 300th birthday celebration.“I was able to secure four earmarks—one being for the Cogswell Art Center. It has been a recurring one for me and something I care about very much. Creative Haverhill is doing a great job when it comes to restoring Cogswell and its eventually going to turn it into one of the premier art installations in the Merrimack Valley if not the Commonwealth,” Hamilton said.If the funding holds, Creative Haverhill would get $50,000; Greater Haverhill Chamber, $25,000; and Historic New England $200,000. The Methuen Tricentennial Celebration would receive $50,000.Hamilton said the potential grant for Historic New England is significant as the nonprofit seeks to renovate its 151 Essex St.building into a tourist attraction for the region.“My friends at Historic New England who, as we know, are trying to pursue a project that is going to once again transform the downtown for the better and really connect the entirety of downtown together which I am extremely excited for.”Historic New England was also the recipient of the legislature's generosity during the last two years.Hamilton said the Methuen Birthday Celebration Committee is planning a series of large and small events beginning in December 2025 through June 2026. The celebration marks the anniversary of Methuen's separation from Haverhill and its incorporation on Dec. 8, 1725.The budgeting process now moves to the Senate for debate. The investment landscape is changing dramatically, and Seth Cogswell of Running Oak believes most investors aren't prepared. "People have gotten away with investing without thinking for the last decade," he observes, pointing to fundamental shifts that could upend conventional portfolio strategies. At the heart of this change lies the potential reversal of globalization—a multi-decade trend that has kept corporate profit margins artificially inflated and supported unprecedented valuations in certain market segments. This shift creates both dangers and opportunities that demand a more thoughtful approach to portfolio construction. The conversation reveals a critical blind spot in how most investors structure their portfolios. Between large-cap dominated passive funds (where often just eight companies represent 60% of holdings) and small/mid-cap allocations sits an overlooked space with compelling characteristics. Mid-caps have outperformed large caps by 60 basis points annually over 33 years while maintaining lower valuations—creating what Seth describes as "the most attractive asymmetry within the US equity market."Seth makes a compelling case for disciplined investing focused on three core principles: maximizing earnings growth, avoiding companies that should go down (particularly those with unreasonable valuations), and mitigating drawdowns. This rules-based approach removes emotion from the investment process and has proven valuable through various market cycles. The discussion also explores how companies that have taken on significant debt primarily to repurchase shares may face difficulties if we enter a recession or if interest rates remain elevated. "You go back to the end of bull markets, that's where the most crowded, most popular trades drop 50% in a few months," Seth warns, highlighting why investors should reassess concentration risks in their portfolios.Whether you're concerned about potential market turbulence or simply looking to optimize your portfolio construction, this conversation offers valuable perspective on finding opportunities in overlooked market segments through disciplined, logical investment approaches that focus on sustainable growth and risk management. Guest: Richard Cogswell   Guest Bio: Richard Cogswell is a people-first sales leader. He is an organizational team builder who believes that people, vision, values, and behaviors build winning sales cultures. Richard has held multiple senior sales leadership positions within a number of industries, working across EMEA, the United States, and APAC, within startups and listed multinational companies. Whether newly hired or promoted, or for those with experience already gained on the journey, Richard aims to show a methodology focused on how you might best lay down the foundations for exponential and sustained growth through the sales leadership function, and critically through the catalyst of culture. You can find out more from Richard at www.richardcogswell.com   Guest Links: Email Rich, rich_cogswell@hotmail.com, for a free chapter from his new book, The Cultural Sales Leader.   Guest Points: The Importance of Sales Leadership Training: Companies often promote high-performing salespeople into leadership roles without training, assuming natural sales ability translates to management skills. Leadership training is crucial as it equips individuals to manage teams, strategize, and build a successful sales environment. Just as salespeople ask customers for investment in products, leaders need to ask their companies to invest in their development to ensure long-term success. Key Challenges for Sales Managers: As a sales leader, you must understand the motivations of individual team members and how to align them to broader business goals. Leadership requires thinking beyond personal sales performance to focus on the larger company objectives and sales strategies. New sales managers may face pressure to meet numbers without sufficient training or guidance, often leading to "busy work" rather than effective leadership. Sales leaders must align different departments to the sales strategy and ensure that everyone is working towards common goals. The Importance of Sales Culture: Culture is the "how" and "why" of an organization. Strong, lived culture creates behaviors that lead to results. Culture is delicate and can easily deteriorate if not actively maintained. Leadership must tend to it and ensure that it is consistently reinforced throughout the organization. A cultural sales leader must ensure that the team is aligned with the company's mission and values. Building a High-Performance Sales Team: Sales teams need clarity on priorities, key behaviors, and the strategies to win.  Simplifying objectives helps teams focus and drive results. Asking team members for their own sales plans fosters ownership and buy-in. It ensures that they think strategically and have a stake in achieving the targets. Creating a simple, one-page document outlining key objectives, behaviors, and strategies ensures everyone in the organization is aligned and working towards the same goals. Leadership and Responsibility: Sales leaders should empower their team to think creatively and solve problems independently. Sales leaders should continuously engage with the team to understand their challenges and provide support. Leaders must ensure that sales efforts are aligned with broader company goals, incorporating feedback from all departments and focusing on long-term growth, not just short-term targets. Long-Term Success and Ambition: A strong sales culture can coexist with ambition and high performance. The most successful teams combine cultural alignment with long-term strategic thinking, creating a sense of growth and success over time. Sales leaders should look beyond the immediate financial year and think in terms of three-to-five-year goals, including opening new markets or enhancing products based on customer feedback. These "big bets" shape the future of the company.       About Salesology®: Conversations with Sales Leaders Download your free gift, The Salesology® Vault. The vault is packed full of free gifts from sales leaders, sales experts, marketing gurus and revenue generation experts.  Download your free gift, 81 Tools to Grow Your Sales & Your Business Faster, More Easily & More Profitably. Pawnbroking—or lending money on portable security—is one of the world's oldest professions. It can be traced back to Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire in the West and to China three thousand years ago in the East. Hank Josephs of Corpus Christi remembers he got the idea to change his family's dry goods store into a pawn shop during WWII: "Our sergeant would lend the guys five bucks on their watches, their service watches, and when they got paid two weeks later, they'd pay him back ten dollars. I said, ‘That's a hell of a deal. I want in on that deal.'" Josephs recalls one of the more bizarre stories that came out of the shop: "The one in which a guy walked in and said, ‘I want to borrow five bucks on my eye.' Had a prosthetic eye. Pulled it out of his head. He had gotten it in the service. He says, ‘I want five dollars; I need a—need a bottle of wine.' I loaned him five dollars on the wine. Some people came in later—he never did come back. People came in later and said, What's the strangest thing you ever took in? I pull out the box with the eye in it. I said, ‘Here,' and showed them the prosthetic eye, which was a beautiful brown eye with veins running through it. So we had some farmers come in and they had seen the eye, and they were looking for a wedding set. I told them, I say, if they bought the wedding set, I'd give them the eye. So sure enough they bought a wedding set, I gave them the eye, and that was the last of that." Robert Cogswell of Austin explains a problem he had in the 1970s: "I had this sophisticated instrument, but I was not a sophisticated guitar player. And I worried about my guitar. It was such a nice instrument that I didn't want it to get stolen. So I carried it with me a lot of the time, even when I was riding bicycles, and I was worried about it getting smashed or broken or damaged. It was an unhealthy relationship for a person who was already married. It was like I had this guitar on the side." Cogswell describes finding a $15 answer to his dilemma hanging in a pawn shop: "This Gretsch was made of something like three-eighths-inch plywood. It didn't pick up sound very well. In other words, it's a very quiet guitar, which is perfect for a person who can't play well." He relates how he was a bit apprehensive at first to purchase it: "I said, ‘This guitar is not the way it was when it was built. It's much better. The person who owned it really loved it because it's worn at this point, and it's worn at that point, and he has adjusted the nut and he's adjusted the strings so that they fit this guitar right. So that person loves this guitar, and I don't want to buy it out from under that person, if he's coming back to get it.' And he said, ‘No, you can buy this one. The guy who left that guitar has pawned it here five times. And he brought it in this time and said, "Okay, you can sell it this time because I'm taking this money straight to the bus station, and I'm going back home to Kentucky."'" The recent economic slump has boosted business for pawn shops and has led to the appearance of online pawnbrokers. The industry has also been aided by popular TV shows like Pawn Stars. Robert Cogswell found a guitar perfectly suited for his needs at a pawn shop. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

CONTENT HEADS UP: This episode may inspire you to give the practice of “Walking-In-Your-Shoes” a go on your own. We waive all responsibility for any ensuing mishaps of cramped spaces, being near stairs or inspired bouts of wild and/or naked abandon. On a more serious note, we do discuss heavy subjects like trauma, armoring, drowning, rape and PTSD. But predominantly, we delve into the healing power and intelligence of the body invited into highly conscious motion and given free-reign and guidance to express all that it knows. Also, Walking-In-Your-Shoes can be done just as effectively from a wheelchair or with the capacities of any perambulatory disability. You just have to be a body with the desire to follow how it's guiding you to feel, see and know. This episode presents a departure from our previous episodes. As in some of our upcoming episodes, we focus here on a specific practice and its transformative techniques aimed at unlocking conscious awareness of the body's intelligence. While past episodes delved into the philosophical underpinnings of embodiment, this installment offers practical guidance on tangible methods to access your inner knowledge as an opportunity for revelation and growth.SYNOPSIS:Ali discusses a movement-based mindfulness practice called “The Walking-In-Your-Shoes” (WIYS) mind-body process with one of its co-founders, actor and director, Joseph Culp. WIYS is a process that allows the practitioner, in partnership with a facilitator, to address questions or needs through an intuitive questioning of the body-mind through movement. The applications of the questioning process are quite broad and can be applied to everything from healing trauma and managing addiction, to business development or a more organic method of acting. This is another means of “knowing” through your body. Ali and Joseph discuss the overlap between WIYS and Family Constellation Work and how both practices allow others to help take on and process trauma or healing on the behalf of another person. EXPLORATION POINTS:- Joseph & Ali discuss the intersections between the Walking-In-Your-Shoes (WIYS) body-mind process and Family Constellation Work. The episode explores how both practices facilitate the process of addressing questions or needs through intuitive questioning of and attention to the body-mind through movement.- The episode highlights Joseph Culp's personal growth as an actor through his involvement in WIYS. Culp discusses how this movement-based mindfulness practice has contributed to his development as an artist, providing insights into the transformative power of the practice.- Joseph Culp and Ali discuss the concept of "Walking for Others". The exploration involves understanding how facilitators can embody and navigate the experiences of others through movement, emphasizing the empathetic and therapeutic aspects of Walking in someone else's shoes.-  Joseph and Ali explore the therapeutic potential of WIYS for individuals grappling with severe trauma or PTSD. Discussing how the intuitive questioning of the body-mind through movement, coupled with the empathetic support of a facilitator and sometimes a group, offers a unique avenue for addressing and healing deep-seated traumas. - Joseph offers insights into how Wilhelm Reich's ideas have shaped WIYS, contributing to its foundation, while also exploring how Alexander Lowen's contributions informed the practice of following the body towards liberation. This exploration provides a comprehensive understanding of the historical and theoretical roots that form the intellectual, and practical, lineage of WIYS.To subscribe now, click hereTo be an angel to the podcast, click here To read more about the podcast, click here FOR MORE ALI MEZEY:Ali - Website:Personal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course information:Transgenerational Healing Films:FOR MORE JOSEPH CULP:BIO: Joseph Culp is an actor, director and filmmaker, working in theater, film and television for over 40 years.
