What if employers spoke less and listened more? Vocal problems can occur for people with all types of conditions -- Parkinson's disease, muscular dystrophy, stroke. Acute laryngitis is very common while chronic laryngitis affects over 20% of the population. Christine received a diagnosis of spasmodic dysphonia and now experiences some relief with botox shots. Should we assume EVERYONE has reflux until proven otherwise?  Does reflux cause global warming?  If there’s a post-nasal drip, is there a pre-nasal drip?  Where’s all that mucus coming from anyway?  On today’s episode we discuss the epidemics of reflux and post-nasal drip with laryngologist Dr. Matthew Clary, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.  Dr. Clary went to medical school at The Ohio State, started his otolaryngology residency at George Washington, which is where I met him, as I was in DC, too, at Georgetown at the same time.  After two years, he defected and transferred to Thomas Jefferson University, now the Sidney Kimmel Medical College and then did a laryngology fellowship at UCSF. My guest this week is Nora Whittaker Jones, a Speech Language Pathologist who is intimately acquainted with the human voice. Nora and I discussed common vocal problems like muscle tension dysphonia and the stress they can cause, especially among professionals like teachers who depend on their voice every day. Nora shared her perspective on how to care for one's voice, and how to find help when necessary. 

Spasmodic dysphonia, a focal form of dystonia, is a neurological voice disorder that involves "spasms" of the vocal cords causing interruptions of speech and affecting the voice quality. Dr. Craig Berzofsky discusses the causes and treatments of dysphonia.

Dr Mark Porter investigates if a new gastric balloon swallowed in a capsule could be a valuable new tool for weight loss. Targeted for people whose BMI is lower than those who would be eligible for weight loss surgery, Inside Health finds out what the new balloon involves and asks two NHS bariatric surgeons - Sally Norton in Bristol and Guy Slater in Chichester - is this a boon to the arsenal of weight loss surgeons or is it a just slimming aid? Proton pump inhibitors are a family of drugs which reduce stomach acids to stop the symptoms of heartburn and ulcers. But they are being widely overused according to many gastroenterologists and doctors. Mark talks to gastroenterologist, Anton Emmanuel about the scale of the overuse, the potential side effects of being on them for too long as well as what people can do if they think they should come off the drug.
